Kick-Ass

To celebrate the release of 'Thunderbolts*' here are the best anti-hero action movies to stream right now
Image
Not every hero wears a cape — some curse, cheat, and still save the day.

I’ve always been more of an anti-hero guy than a full-blown superhero fan. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the capes — but there’s just something way more interesting about characters who break the rules, bend the line between right and wrong, and still manage to save the day (sort of). That’s why I’m genuinely excited for “Thunderbolts*.” It looks like Marvel is finally embracing the messier side of heroism. So if you’re like me and prefer your heroes a little rough around the edges, here are my top seven anti-hero action movies you can stream right now, ranked.

Top 7 anti-hero action movies on streaming right now.

No. 6: ‘Joker’

No. 5: ‘Kick-Ass’

Nicolas Cage's New Psychological Thriller Has Critics & Audiences Divided On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Nicolas Cage is a renowned actor with numerous awards to his name, but his latest movie is struggling to gain traction. Having started his Hollywood career in 1981 in the show The Best of Times, he quickly pivoted to the big screen. Cage found roles in Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987), and Face/Off (1997), all while earning prominence fairly quickly. In the 2000s, he would star in National Treasure (2004), Ghost Rider (2007), and Kick-Ass (2010), among countless other films. He even gained renown as a voice actor, starring in The Croods (2013) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Cage will be starring in Spider-Noir, a detective spin-off from the Sony Spider-Man universe.

If Nicolas Cage's impressive career is not astounding enough, he has also won several awards from major organizations. He earned Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance as Ben Sanderson in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, alongside a nomination for his work in Adaptation (2002). He...

Image
Nicolas Cage is a Hollywood star with a wildly diverse and intense career, and his filmography is anything but ordinary. But somehow, his off-screen life happens to be even more cinematic, with equally unpredictable turns.

For example, his whirlwind romance with Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of Elvis Presley, who carried the weight of his legacy on her shoulders. While it was brief, Cage made a shocking admission about it years later. So, here’s everything you need to know about the ex-couple.

Inside Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley’s brief but blazing romance Nicolas Cage in Kick-Ass | Lionsgate

Before their names were tied together, Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley were two artists who were walking on parallel paths. Their worlds collided in October 2000, at punk legend Johnny Ramone’s birthday party, and sparks flew between the two (via InStyle).

15 Years Ago, Another R-Rated Superhero Movie Paved The Way For Deadpool At The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"This is going to be the most expensive home movie I ever made." Those are the alleged words of director Matthew Vaughn, according to Christopher Mintz-Plasse, one of the stars of 2010's "Kick-Ass." In an interview with Chron at the time, the "Superbad" star explained that Vaughn's R-rated superhero movie "almost didn't get made" and that "nobody wanted to touch it."

That all may be hard to imagine now. Why wouldn't a studio want to back a comic book movie with a killer cast? And this is Matthew Vaughn we're talking about! But 2010 was a very different time. Vaughn hadn't yet reinvented the "X-Men" franchise with "First Class," nor had he delivered the "Kingsman" property. He was merely a stylish filmmaker...

Aaron Taylor Johnson’s First Job As A Superhero: Save ‘Kick-Ass’
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Image Source: Amazon If any movie made Aaron Taylor-Johnson a serious contender to be the next James Bond, it was Kick-Ass. That film, which started its original theatrical run 15 years ago, established the young British actor’s credentials as a charismatic action star. (He was 19 at the time of the film’s release.) As it turns out, there may not have been a Kick-Ass without him. When Taylor-Johnson went in for his audition, he told us, it was already several months into the casting process, and director Matthew Vaughn was almost ready to just give up until Taylor-Johnson walked in. Pierce Brosnan has weighed in on ongoing speculation around the future of the James Bond franchise, voicing support for actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a potential replacement for Daniel Craig.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Brosnan reflected on Taylor-Johnson’s past performance and presence on set. The two previously worked together on the 2009 drama The Greatest, where Taylor-Johnson played a leading role.

6 Marvel And DC Actors Who Inadvertently Helped Tank The Superhero Movies They Starred In
Image
Plenty of superhero movies have fallen afoul of fans and critics over the years, with that sometimes enough to doom their chances of success. Then, there's been the rare occasion when someone directly involved with one of these adaptations has helped (inadvertently or otherwise) tank them.

How could any of us forget Fantastic Four director Josh Trank disowning the reboot on Twitter in 2015? According to box office analysts, his remarks and negative press they received in the days that followed, were enough to shave as much as $10 million off the movie's opening weekend.

In this feature, we're concentrating on actors who caused irreparable damage to the superhero movies they starred in. Whether it was refusing to promote them, personal issues which killed fan interest, or even uncontrollable egos, we're sure you'll agree this lot did little to help.

To find out who we've singled out, you just need to tap...

Image
Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) has found her co-lead in The Edge Of Normal. Today, Deadline reports that the Kick-Ass actress will be joined in the serial killer flick by Rupert Friend. The actor has been pouring himself into the genre as of late, with his recent supporting role in Drew Hancock’s feature-length directorial debut, Companion. The thriller, which is eyeing a production start date sometime this spring, comes from helmer, Carlota Pereda, and will serve as the director’s first English-language flick. For those who haven’t seen it, Pereda’s most recent production, 2022’s Piggy, was a bloody and brutal entry into the genre, so we’re already expecting more of the same from The Edge Of Normal.

10 Best Superhero Movies Where the Hero Doesn't Actually Have Super Powers
Image
The superhero genre has proven itself incredibly diverse and versatile, exploring everything from cosmic saviors like Superman to demonic heroes like Hellboy. However, audiences can sometimes struggle to relate to those heroes, instead gravitating to superheroes with no powers at all. Sometimes, the stories with the highest stakes, the best sense of adventure, and the most engaging plots focus on protagonists who rely on intelligence, technology, and skill to save the day.

From Marvelto DC and everything in between, the comic book medium has given Hollywood decades of source material to choose from when it comes to good, powerless heroes. While not all of these movies land at the box office, they can still offer a fun experience for the audience. Whether animated or live-action, based on a comic or completely original, sometimes superheroes are at their best when they don't have cosmic superpowers to fall back on.

Most movie lovers remember Chloë Grace Moretz for her Kick-Ass performances alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but the talented actress also starred in the divisive 2013 remake of Stephen King's must-see Carrie (1976). Novocaine Review — Jack Quaid Stars in a Pure Shot of Hilarious (and Bloody) Adrenaline
Image
I love a movie where the main character, with Meg Ryan’s eyes and Dennis Quaid’s jawline, prepares for a fight by punching his already bloody and battered fists into a shattered pile of glass to prove a point. Not only does Novocaine want to pull the viewer through the unthinkable, but it drags the viewer in on a enthralling ride that refuses to let up.

Novocaine pushes the envelope with its gallows humor. Tell me you don’t wince in pain watching bits of glass in Jack Quaid’s knuckles while laughing hysterically every step of the way. It’s a pure shot of hilarious adrenaline that never lets up because all it wants to do is put our hero through the wringer—sometimes literally—ratcheting up a relentless amount of tension and laughs.

'Kraven the Hunter' to Stream on Netflix Next Month
Image
The critically panned Spider-Man spin-off (which ultimately brought Sony’s ill-thought-out shared universe to an end), Kraven the Hunter is ready to enact brutal vengeance on Netflix next month. The comic book action outing, which stars Kick-Ass and Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Marvel antihero, caused yet another divide between critics and audiences at the time, with the latter crowd no doubt excited to be able to stream Kraven at home.

Kraven the Hunter will be available to stream on Netflix in the United States on March 13, 2025, according to What’s on Netflix. Directed by J. C. Chandor from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk, Kraven the Hunter tells the origin of the Marvel character, much like Venom before it. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for "The Amazing Spider-Man" #15 back in 1964, Kraven the Hunter follows the title character on a violent vendetta.

DC Studios Reveals 'The Authority' Dcu Film Has Had Script Issues
Image
It has been over two years since James Gunn announced his plans for Chapter 1 of the Dcu, Gods & Monsters. Audiences finally got to see those plans kick off with the debut of Creature Commandos, and the franchise is moving along nicely as Superman is set to open in theaters in July 2025, followed by previously announced projects like Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Clayface, Sgt.Rock and Dynamic Duo were announced after and have since been added to the slate of releases, showing a diverse line-up of projects and genres for the Dcu. However, some titles announced in January 2023 have made no progress, one in particular feeling like a glaring omission: The Authority.

Speaking with various members of the press to update on the state of the Dcu, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the status of The Authority. According to Variety, Safran said, "It’s a very,...

Why Alok Sahar From Star Trek: Section 31 Looks So Familiar
Image
Olatunde Osunsanmi's new TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31" is weirdly retro in its setup, feeling reminiscent of delightfully corny B-movies of the 1980s like Peter Manoogian's low-budget time-travel lark "Eliminators." The main character is Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the genocidal tyrant of the Mirror Universe, and she has been enlisted to be part of Section 31, Starfleet's ethics-free black ops organization that handles dangerous secret missions.

The film's cast, however, is rounded out by a rogues' gallery of diverse aliens and specialists, each one enlisted to help the Empress on a vital mission to retrieve a doomsday device. There is the shapeshifter Quasi (Sam Richardson), a none-too-bright cyborg bruiser named Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), a microscopic organism named Zeph piloting a human-sized robot (Robert Kazinsky), an ultra-seductive Deltan named Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a straight-laced Starfleet officer who is there to make sure...

Big names like Batman and Spider-Man had seen considerable success on the big screen in the past, but the 2010s brought mainstream success to superheroes like never before. At the same time, movies like Megamind and Kick-Ass were providing fun twists on the genre's already long-established tropes.

Directed by Tom Gormican from a screenplay by him and Kevin Etten, the film breaks the fourth wall by having Nicolas Cage portraying a fictional version of himself — Nick Cage, an actor who can no longer land a major studio role and is in a lot of debt despite having starred in blockbusters like National Treasure. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a rare movie wherein an actor playing a version of themselves works on many levels.

The plot combines various genres and leans quite a bit into the buddy comedy aspect. It’s unclear where Gormican and Etten may have gotten the idea for the movie, but Cage certainly has no issue spoofing parts of his career and making meta jokes about the films he’s made and the movie industry at large. Nicolas Cage is joined by a fantastic cast,...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Discussed Blockbuster Choices (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Aaron Taylor-Johnson almost said goodbye to blockbusters for good after turning down some of Hollywood’s biggest franchise roles. In a candid cover story for Esquire, the actor revealed why he chose indie films over lucrative offers. The Kick-Ass star, known for his breakout role in the action-packed flick, had no interest in hopping on the blockbuster train.

“I wanted, purely, to be with my babies,” said the father of three, explaining how family played a central role in his decision. At the time, he wasn’t ready for the intense commitment of major franchise films, admitting, “It was too early.” He remained firm despite the allure of huge franchises like Godzilla and Avengers. “I didn’t want to be taken away from them.”

Fast forward to today, and Taylor-Johnson is ready for a new chapter with Kraven the Hunter. While his...

Nicolas Cage’s Beloved 78% Rotten Tomatoes Superhero Movie Is Saving the Day on Peacock
Image
The comic book genre has exploded over the last decade. Whether it be DC or Marvel, there have been plenty of stories based on our favorite characters, like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. However, some of the best films in the genre have been based on some lesser-known comics that have gotten new life thanks to their big-screen adaptations. One of the biggest examples of this would be 2010’s Kick-Ass. The day-in-the-life of a superhero jump-started a couple of its key stars’ careers while bringing director Matthew Vaughn into the mainstream. Now, as fans wait for Marvel to kick off the comic book slate for 2025, Kick-Ass has found a new streaming home.

Every Movie Starring Chris Hemsworth On Netflix
Image
Chris Hemsworth is taking Netflix by storm, and not just because of his Netflix original movies. The actor rose to prominence in his home country when he starred as Kim Hyde in the Australian soap opera Home and Away from 2004 to 2007. However, Hemsworth gained worldwide recognition when he joined the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor in 2011. He played the titular character, of course, and would go on to appear as Thor in ten more movies in the MCU, four of them his own.

Chris Hemsworth's next projects include Stuntnuts: The Movie (the third film in the Kick-Ass series), Crime 101 (a crime movie also starring Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry), and Extraction 3.

Although he has continued to play the God of Thunder in the MCU many years after Thor (with a rumored fifth movie in the works), Hemsworth has experienced success outside of Marvel. He has starred in several action films,...

When Jim Carrey Refused To Promote His Own Movie Sparking A Controversy
Image
Did Jim Carrey refuse to promote Kick-Ass 2? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

This all happened during the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012. Jim Carrey wasn’t okay with the violence the film portrayed anymore. In a tweet, he declared: “I did Kick-Ass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

Creator Mark Millar was baffled by the whole stuff. He took to his blog, alluding, “[I’m] baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay 18 months ago.” Ouch.

It was difficult for Millar, yes. He pointed out that Kick-Ass 2 was always going to have its share of blood. Also because, the first movie (Hit-Girl) had set the tone. Millar defended his film, calling it fiction and that it...

Most Disappointing Movies of 2024
Image
2024 had multiple blockbusters and sequels that were critical and financial successes, yet the year, like any other, had some underwhelming movies. There is no worse feeling for a viewer than seeing a movie they had high hopes for, or thought would be at least decent, turn out to be a disappointment. These films garnered much anticipation due to either a promising IP, an ambitious premise, or the talent involved on and off-screen.

Alas, these once-intriguing movies fell apart for audiences and critics when they were released. There are many reasons why these movies fell below expectations, whether it was questionable storytelling, glaringly obvious CGI, or, if they were part of a franchise, they couldn't create the same magic from previous installments. From Joker: Folie à Deux to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the 2024 movie season was occasionally plagued by these letdowns.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson found Nocturnal Animals role ‘really, really difficult’
Aaron Taylor-Johnson found the role of serial killer Ray Marcus in ‘Nocturnal Animals’ “really, really difficult”.The 34-year-old actor starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon and Isla Fisher in Tom Ford’s 2016 crime-thriller as the serial killer, though struggled to portray such a vicious character and felt “so out of [his] depth”.In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Taylor-Johnson said: “I had a real issue taking on that role. I found it really, really difficult.“I couldn’t understand why Tom – who I knew, sort of, from dinner parties here and there – wanted me to play a serial killer. My feeling was: ‘I can’t. I don’t see a way in here. I don’t even know what you want me to do.’ I was so out of my depth. “Tom’s whole thing was, ‘I just feel like this character should have so much charisma. That’s what’s unpredictable about him.

"I Had A Real Issue": Aaron Taylor-Johnson Gets Candid About The Troubling Villain Role That Won Him A Golden Globe
Image
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has quickly become a notable name in Hollywood, having appeared in a handful of memorable films over the last decade. He will still be best known to many audiences for his starring role in Kick-Ass (2010) and the 2013 sequel, but he also played the lead in 2014's Godzilla, which remains a highlight of Legendary's MonsterVerse.

More recently, Taylor-Johnson has appeared in movies like Tenet (2020), The King's Man (2021), Bullet Train (2022), The Fall Guy (2024), and the critically-acclaimed Nosferatu (2024). These days, Taylor-Johnson is mentioned most commonly as the actor who is seemingly a front-runner to be the next James Bond. One of his most important roles, however, couldn't be further away from 007, with Taylor-Johnson having played an unhinged serial killer back in 2016.

James Bond 26 could still be quite a ways off, as a new report recently revealed tension between producer Barbara Broccoli and Amazon, the new owner of MGM.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Review: A Decent Attempt At Reviving Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Off Universe That Falls Short Of Expectations
Image
Kraven the Hunter Movie Review Rating:

Star Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger

Director: J.C. Chandor

Aaron Taylor-Johnson As Kraven The Hunter (Photo Credit – Instagram)

What’s Good: The film’s tone doesn’t shy away from the comic-book feeling of old, an element that most modern superhero films try to avoid in favor of a more realistic feeling.

What’s Bad: The script is just nonsense, and the way they changed some of the main aspects of Kraven as a character feels like a betrayal to the character itself.

Loo Break: The start feels a bit slow, but you must go on that break before things go wild and into ridiculous territory.

Watch or Not?: This is a pass unless you are an Aaron Taylor-Johnson fan. If not, move along, as there are better films out there.

Language: English (with subtitles).

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 120 Minutes.

'Fantastic Beasts' Star Callum Turner Emerges as a New James Bond Favorite
Image
For months now, Kick-Ass and Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been rumored for the role of James Bond, with the Kraven the Hunter the favorite to take over from Daniel Craig following 2021’s No Time to Die. But, has the critical and financial failure of his Sony and Marvel outing hurt his chances? Maybe, as a new favorite has now emerged...and he could be fantastic.

According to the betting site Coral, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star Callum Turner has seen his odds halved from 4-1 to 2-1, meaning there’s now far more chance that he could be the next actor chosen to sport the iconic tuxedo. Best known for roles in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise, as well as Green Room, Assassin’s Creed, and the acclaimed television series Masters of the Air, Turner certainly fits the criteria as laid out by longtime 007 producers Barabara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

A young man sits alone with nothing but his thoughts and his hunger… his hunger to succeed and his hunger for In-n-Out burgers and milkshakes, which he was using to bulk up. Because this man is an actor, not just any actor, he is an up-and-coming movie star with something to prove and he is going to do just that through his artistry and his physicality. No longer would Aaron Johnson be known as the Kick-Ass kid, he was about to be known as the top performer to watch, known as the man who was about to be an A-lister until he was known as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, cuz he decided to take his wife’s last name and confuse everyone on so many levels – especially me! ”I was always told at school that you had to have a backup plan, but all I ever wanted to do was act.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Approaches Massive Career Box Office Milestone Despite ‘Kraven the Hunter’
Image
Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s career seems to have had a bunch of stops and starts. He broke onto the scene as a teen star in films such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and Nowhere Boy, but was elevated to the big leagues with a leading role in the superhero film Kick-Ass. It’s a genre that Taylor-Johnson has stuck with, going on to play Quicksilver in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Kraven the Hunter in the recently released Sony film of the same name. Kraven the Hunter tanked terribly with both critics and audiences, but despite that, Taylor-Johnson’s association with big banner films has sent his career box office to incredible heights.

Jack Quaid's The Boys Replacement Is Revisiting A 15-Year-Old Superpower From A 78% Rt Film
Image
Since The Boys is finally ending its run with season 5, Jack Quaid will likely need a worthy replacement for the show in the action genre. Interestingly, it looks like the actor's upcoming movie will not only be the perfect follow-up to his portrayal of Hughie in The Boys but also give him a strange but fascinating superpower from a 17-year-old superhero flick. Even before Jack Quaid starred as Hughie in The Boys, he had a few mainstream movie and TV projects, like Logan Lucky, Vinyl, and Rampage, under his belt.

However, he became a household name after appearing as one of the main characters in The Boys, which also paved the way for him to land other big roles in movies and shows, like Stark Trek: Lower Decks and Oppenheimer. Since The Boys is about to conclude with one final installment, Jack Quaid's tenure as Hughie might finally come to a close.

Superman Composer John Murphy Shares 30-Second "Theme From Superman" Ahead Of Trailer Release
Image
Yesterday, Warner Bros. and DC Studios shared the first poster for Superman. The movie will serve as the true launching platform for the new Dcu after Max's Creature Commandos, and excitement for Thursday's trailer is rapidly rising.

In the motion poster shared on social media yesterday, we heard what appeared to be composer John Murphy's score for the reboot. Taking its cues from John Williams' work in Superman: The Movie and, to a lesser extent, Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel theme, it's received a positive response from fans.

Today, Murphy has posted a 30-second clip on YouTube in a video he's named "Theme From Superman." We don't know if this is the Man of Tomorrow's main theme, but it seems to be at least part of it (we'd imagine a full "reveal" is being saved for the trailer).

The cast of Kraven the Hunter is made up of proven Marvel stars and fresh talents who will help to continue the development of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Following Venom and Morbius, Kraven the Hunter will feature the third Spider-Man villain from Marvel Comics to receive a solo film in Sony's growing franchise. While Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, is curiously absent from the Sony Spider-Man Universe, Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock, Jared Leto's Michael Morbius, and Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. the Vulture, have claimed their space in the franchise, with Kraven the Hunter joining them

Since debuting in Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man #15 back in 1964, Kraven the Hunter has become an important part of Spider-Man's lore, becoming obsessed with hunting down the web-slinger to proclaim himself as the world's greatest hunter.
