“I miss that character, but I am still in touch with almost everyone from the show. I am going to Ed’s [Westwick] wedding and I am so excited,” admitted “Gossip Girl” star Kelly Rutherford at French TV festival Series Mania.
In the “still relevant” show, she played the impossibly glamorous mother of Blake Lively’s Serena.
“It was before this whole super politically correct time. We were on the verge of it and there is just a different energy about it. After the first season, we knew [it was huge].”
“Gossip Girl” ended in 2012.
“The women I grew up with were very chic, but I hadn’t really seen a mother like that on TV. I didn’t realize how much people loved Lily – until now. At first, it was all about these kids. We were just parents.

Jennifer Lawrence is back in action, starring in a brand-new comedy after taking a break from Hollywood. Though she’s now a new mom, Lawrence is still a hot commodity. Fans love her as much as ever, and it’s clear that her signature sense of humor is still very much intact. Lawrence has been a working actor since childhood, appearing in TV shows and movies before getting her big break in a 2010 independent film. Ironically, that independent production might have been the one that shot Lawrence to stardom, but it remains one of her lowest-paid roles to date.

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Horror delights, rom-coms and a new sci-fi series starring Christoph Waltz are just a few of the highlights arriving on Amazon Prime Video in February. This month sees the debut of the second and final season of “Carnival Row” on Feb. 17, while Feb. 24 is when “The Consultant” – a “Severance”-like thriller series starring Waltz and directed by “WandaVision’s” Matt Shakman – drops.
In terms of new original Prime Video movies, on Feb. 10 there’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” a romantic comedy starring Alison Brie who co-wrote the script with her husband Dave Franco (who serves as director).
And you’ll find last year’s buzzy horror hit “Smile” on the streaming service on Feb. 21, while “Mad Max: Fury Road” filmmaker George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” arrives on Feb. 17.
That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

When Ryan White first met Pamela Anderson, she wanted to know all about his mother. “We spent a good 30 minutes talking about my mom,” says the Emmy-nominated director. It was the first thing that surprised him about the Nineties bombshell, who was for a not-so-brief moment in time the most famous person on the planet. Literally. The second surprise was her sense of humour, which, he says, is dark and slapstick. “I really think Pamela has a whole second career in romantic comedies.”
Her big heart and funny bone may not be what made Anderson world-famous, but they are what make the Netflix documentary Pamela, A Love Story so compelling. Made in collaboration with Anderson, White’s film unspools her life and career as we know it. On the surface, it is a two-hour tour through the big bullet points of both: Playboy, Baywatch, Tommy Lee, sex tape, that campaign...

In a missive sent around to last year’s Oscar nominees, stars were told to “read the room” when delivering speeches at the Academy Awards this month. Translation: Get off the stage before the orchestra is forced to awkwardly play you out.
In 1943, Greer Garson set a Guinness World Record for Longest Oscars Acceptance Speech, with her address upon accepting her Best Actress award forMrs Miniver clocking in at five and a half minutes.
Garson isn’t the only winner guilty of indulgence though. Hilary Swank, Adrien Brody and Al Pacino have all ignored the 45-second limit and consequently found themselves at the receiving end of a passive aggressive “Will you wrap this up?” stare.
Some actors, however, know that not every story needs to be so long and that brevity is an undervalued quality. Franklin D Roosevelt’s adage – “Be sincere, be brief, be seated” – could very well be...

The last time we saw The Handmaid’s Tale’s June Osborne, she’d led a pack of former handmaids to help her murder Commander Fred Waterford in the woods. With Fred’s blood drying on her hands, she returned home and crept into her daughter’s nursery to hold little Nichole for the last time before going on the lam or surrendering to the authorities — it wasn’t clear which. Either way: June knew the jig was up.
So in the Season 5 premiere, she’s shocked to find out that, actually, the jig will go on as scheduled! Nothing to see here!

The catchy tagline in the noteworthy documentary Ask Dr. Ruth boasts "size doesn't matter". It really should not matter especially when it comes to considering America's favorite and adored pint-sized sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer whose diminutive presence has had an impactful influence on pop culture not to mention society in general. Director Ryan White pays homage to the famed soon-to-be nonasegenarian (she turned age 90 in June 2018) as he chronicles a rather interesting and topsy-turvy life of the treasured German-born love doctor on call. Dr. Ruth secured a prominent legacy not only as a heralded sex therapist but also as a ubiquitous media personality, author, and carnal confidante to millions of people during her illustrious career in radio, television, and print....

Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier has bounced back in a big way. Her career came into sharp focus in the early aughts, but was minted later that decade when “After the Wedding” (2006; it made Mads Mikkelsen a household name) and “In a Better World” (2010) both scored Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (“In A Better World” would win). She had done Hollywood in between (the underrated “Things We Lost In The Fire”; 2007), but she was poised for huge things when Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper had agreed to star in “Serena” just as both their stars were going supernova (Lawrence was already an Academy Award winner before the film’s release).

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read ahead if you haven’t seen “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2 finale, “The Word.”)
June (Elisabeth Moss) made a huge decision on Wednesday’s Season 2 finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” when she chose to hand her newborn baby, Holly/Nicole, over to Emily (Alexis Bledel) and stay behind in Gilead to try and get her older daughter, Hannah, back.
Oh, and that was after a whole mess of Marthas helped her get away from the Waterford house in an epic Underground Railroad-fashion and she convinced Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) to let her and the infant go.
And while it’s pretty impossible to tell what you would do when faced with a conundrum like that (escape a dystopian regime with one child or remain in danger to have a chance to possibly save another), plenty of viewers who saw the Hulu series’ sophomore...

We didn’t see much of him on screens last year, but Oscar Isaac has been quite busy. This year, we’ll see him in the next Star Wars film, along with the George Clooney-directed Suburbicon, as well as alongside Christian Bale in The Promise next month, not to mention next year in Alex Garland’s Annihilation next year. He’s now found his next role, according to Deadline.
The Inside Llewyn Davis star is set to lead the WWII drama Operation Finale, which will be directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Twilight Saga: New Moon). Described as a drama akin to Argo and Munich, it will follow his character as an Israeli spy named Peter Malkin, who hunts down the Nazi general Adolf Eichmann, as scripted by Matthew Orton. Production is expected to begin this fall in Argentina, so we could see it by next year.

What if we lived in a world where the norm is to be homosexual and heterosexuality is taboo? How would we react to societal transgressions? The new film “Love Is All You Need?” embraces that premise and explores a “Romeo and Juliet”-like story between a Middle American star quarterback and a male sports journalist that rock a small town to its very core, setting off a series of catastrophic events that will forever change the community. Based on the 19-minute short film of the same name that sparked controversy around the country, the film tackles bullying and prejudice head on, examining our most fundamental biases. Zelda Fitzgerald: Jennifer Lawrence (Serena, above) may star as Zelda Fitzgerald in a project that's under development by Ron Howard's production company. Best known for her troubled marriage to famed author F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby), Zelda Fitzgerald was also a writer and in recent years has been reappraised as a unique creative talent. British TV veteran Emma Frost wrote the script. [Deadline] Han Solo: Now that we know Donald Glover will be playing young Lando Calrissian opposite Alden Ehrenreich in the Han Solo stand-alone movie, naturally we wonder about the premise. A new rumor suggests it "will tell how Lando Calrissian lost the Millennium Falcon to Han." The official Star Wars site says young smuggler and gambler Lando lost the...

The long-accepted rule in the film industry is that established names bring in the box office gold. Hollywood has always relied on big-name actors to guarantee them big box office. But is the trend changing now? Are fans now becoming less interested in A-list actors than in the characters they play?
A-List Hollywood stars get the big money because they bring in big profits for Hollywood studios. Or at least, they have up until now. Is the era of the A-Lister starting to fade? It’s possible, because in recent years, it seems that film fans have more interest in the role and less in the person playing the role. Look at what’s been happening to many A-lister in recent years.
Let’s take Johnny Depp, for instance. He used to play a variety of roles and could draw in crowds with his name alone. More recently, however, his...

Coming off of one of last year’s best performances in 45 Years, Charlotte Rampling has just signed on to writer-director Lisa Langseth‘s latest drama Euphoria, which will be her English-language debut. Deadline reports Rampling will join cast members Eva Green and Langseth-regular Alicia Vikander, who is also producing through her new company Vikarious. The story focuses on two sisters (Green and Vikander), traveling towards an unknown destination in Europe while in conflict. No more information is currently known about the film, which has plans to shoot in the German Alps this August.
In related news, two Agatha Christie films are in the works from Sony and Paramount, with their eyes on Alicia Vikander and Emma Stone, respectively, THR reports. The projects will not be adaptations of Christie’s work, but instead examinations of her life. Sony’s project, titled Agatha Christie, would focus on the titular character (Vikander) crossing...

How I Met Your Mother alum Josh Radnor is getting into sci-fi. He will direct a sci-fi drama called The Leaves, based on a Virgin Comics (now Liquid Comics) one-shot comic of the same name. Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the graphic novel way back in 2008. Here is the description of The Leaves on Amazon: Inspired by the real-life Naadi fortune-tellers of India and one man’s legendary experience, Doctor Max Mellick has the universe at his fingertips — a world-renown heart surgeon with a striking girlfriend and extravagant New York lifestyle. When he attends a friend's funeral in India, something deep within him is forever changed. Identified as evil by an Indian fortune-teller, Max is forced to flee the country — to save his own life, but more importantly, to preserve his destiny. Interestingly, there’s a major aspect of The Leaves’ story (which Variety mentions) that’s not in that summary.

How could it have gone so wrong? That was the question many were asking about "Serena." From any perspective, it looked like a no-brainer success, with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper taking the lead roles in a Depression-era drama based on the best-selling book by Ron Rash. However, it seems from the moment cameras rolled in 2012, something was off. The buzz on the picture was not good; there were rumblings of behind-the-scenes turmoil; and two years later, the movie quietly premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, and the reviews were not kind. Director Susanne Bier ("After The Wedding," "In A Better World") survived the production, and is at the helm of highly anticipated upcoming series "The Night Manager" starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. But when asked about "Serena" by Variety, the filmmaker was candid about what led to the film's failure. Read More: BFI London Film Festival Review: Susanne Bier's.

Even the miscasting of Jennifer Lawrence takes a backseat to the forced quirkiness, which David O. Russell cannot get his cast on the same page with. I’m “biast” (pro): love Jennifer Lawrence
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Oh no. Does David O. Russell have his first dud on his hands? I know lots of people aren’t thrilled with his 2004 film I Heart Huckabees (I like it), but for the first time since he realized that Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper belong onscreen together — theirs is a chemistry that will be the stuff of Hollywood legend, I have no doubt — the result is something that never quite gels. Russell isn’t wrong about Lawrence and Cooper: it’s only when they are paired up here that the movie comes alive. But they’re not paired up onscreen anywhere...

Success is the Best Revenge: Russell’s Embellished Portrait of the Miracle Mop
Director David O. Russell has been often praised for the depictions of women throughout his filmography, beginning with an unforgettable Alberta Watson in his debut Spanking the Monkey (1994). Amy Adams, who starred in The Fighter (2010) and American Hustle (2013), publicly thanked the director for his generous roles for actresses, and he’s finally anchored a film around the perspective of a woman with Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence in their third collaboration together (she won her Oscar for his 2012 title The Silver Linings Playbook). You wouldn’t know it up front, though the opening credits announce a dedication to spirited women everywhere, basing this on one perseverant woman in particular, but Russell is relaying the (exaggerated) story of Joy Mangano, the person behind the invention of the Miracle Mop. Recalibrated for Russell’s particular flavor of odd, broken...

One of the smartest and most enthralling Sf film series ever breaks more new ground as it ends on notes as emotional and provocative as they are explosive. I’m “biast” (pro): big Sf geek; love the book series; love Jennifer Lawrence (and much of the rest of the cast); crave female-centered stories
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I love it)

There are many ways in which the Hunger Games series of movies has been groundbreaking. It has given us a female world-changing heroine in the mold of the countless boys and men Hollywood has cast in such a role, and showed the caricature up by depicting her as more human than most of them: more conflicted, more unsure, more afraid yet also more brave for overcoming all that… and also simultaneously more principled and more selfish.

Jennifer Lawrence takes a stand in the first clip from Joy, throwing Bradley Cooper's words back in his face. You go, girl!
Joy follows the titular woman who created the miracle mop -- and makes for the reunion of our dreams. Director David O. Russell reunites his cast from Silver Linings Playbook to tell Joy's story. So it has to be good.
This is the fourth time that Lawrence and Cooper co-star together, after Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and dare we bring it up, Serena. While they don't seem to be romantically involved in Joy, it's still a pleasure (or... a joy) to see them working together again. The cast is completed with Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, and Virginia Madsen.
While Joy doesn't hit theatres until Christmas Day, it's already getting tons of Oscar buzz. That might be because O. Russell's last two films...

Friends forever! Bradley Cooper told Howard Stern in a new interview on Wednesday, Oct. 21, that he will "never" sleep with his frequent costar Jennifer Lawrence — regardless of how young he dates. The Burnt actor, 40, who's famously starred alongside the gorgeous Oscar-winning actress, 25, in numerous, critically acclaimed, award-winning films including Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Serena, and Joy, explained why their relationship is purely platonic to Stern on his SiriusXM radio show. "Bradley, what is going on there? Jennifer Lawrence. You're doing another movie with [...]...

In response to Jennifer Lawrence's scathing examination of the wage gap between actors and actresses in Hollywood, Bradley Cooper has pledged to partner with the actresses he's co-starring with when negotiating his contracts for upcoming films. "I don't know where it's changing otherwise but that's something that I could do," Cooper told Reuters. "Usually you don't talk about the financial stuff, you have people. But you know what? It's time to start doing that."

Jennifer Lawrence teams up with Amy Schumer for screenplay: 'We were creatively made for each other'
This could be a comedy match made in heaven - Jennifer Lawrence has just revealed that she and Amy Schumer are currently writing a screenplay together.
The Oscar-winning star was promoting the final instalment of The Hunger Games when she explained the pair are also planning to star in the eventual production.
"We play sisters," she told The New York Times. "We're almost done writing. It just flowed out of us. We've got about 100 pages right now.
"Amy and I were creatively made for each other," she continued to enthuse. "We have different flavours. It's been the most fun experience of my life.
"We start the day off on the phone, laughing. And then we send each other pages. And we crack up. I'm flying out tomorrow to see her in Chicago. We'll write a little bit with her sister, Kim, who worked with Amy when she was writing Trainwreck.

Between Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, it’s undeniable that Jennifer Lawrence and filmmaker David O. Russell have a tremendous thing going. Their working relationship is as strong as any other in the business. I’m of the opinion that they’ve put forward two Oscar worthy projects, one of which was able to get Lawrence an Academy Award for Best Actress (for Silver Linings Playbook). Both times, Russell found himself nominated for Best Director and in either Best Adapted Screenplay or Best Original Screenplay, while the other time Lawrence was up for Best Supporting Actress. That’s a winning formula if ever there was one. Later this year, they’ll attempt to go three for three with Joy, a biographical dramedy that will also be the third time they’ve worked together with Bradley Cooper (who also has been nominated twice, as well as co-starred with Lawrence in...

If we simply must keep getting the same movies over and over and over again — and that is not a concession that this status quo is unchangeable — they need to be at least as good as Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Though perhaps with less convoluted punctuation in their titles.
Have we see this all before? Yes… and no. Spy action thrillers should be a dime a dozen instead of $21/£18 a pop in IMAX, but ubiquitous they certainly are. Globetrotting gunplay by agents with cool gadgets and a particular set of skills are utterly...

A cold, sterile film, bereft of the spirit and danger Gustave Flaubert’s groundbreaking novel demands. I’m “biast” (pro): love Mia Wasikowska
