With the 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicking off on Tuesday, one key question is what movies not to miss on the Croisette.
From competition veterans like the Dardenne brothers, Kelly Reichardt and Joachim Trier to newly promoted auteurs like Ari Aster, Oliver Hermanus, Carla Simón and Oliver Laxe, THR’s chief film critic rounds up 10 essential premieres
Die, My Love
Lynne Ramsey first turned heads in Cannes with her stunning 1999 feature debut Ratcatcher, about a 12-year-old boy growing up in poverty in the Glasgow housing projects. The Scottish director returned to the Croisette three years later with Morvern Callar, graduating to the official competition with We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011 and You Were Never Really Here in 2017. Admirers have had a long wait for Ramsey’s fifth feature, a thriller with a vein of comedy she describes as “dark and fucked-up,” starring Jennifer Lawrence as a new mother walloped by postpartum depression,...

Directed and co-written by Lynne Ramsay and based on Lionel Shriver’s 2003 novel of the same name, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2011) has remained one of the most talked-about movies of the last decade. The way it stages both the build-up to—and the aftermath of—a fictional school massacre, and how it unravels through the mother of the perpetrator, is so chillingly real and inwardly grounded that one might easily believe it’s based on a true incident.
The cinematic language Ramsay uses to examine familial blindness to sociopathy, societal blame-shifting, and the anatomy of trauma is so disarmingly simple and universal that it cuts deep. The film feels like a reel of a grieving woman’s life projected through a cracked mirror. And that’s not just aesthetic—it’s embedded deep within the storytelling. Eva’s non-linear character sketch holds nothing back that is crucial to...

For many years after the 1955 film Marty won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or and then went on to win the best picture Oscar, there was little additional evidence of a Cannes/Oscars connection. But in the last five years, both Parasite and — just months ago — Anora followed in Marty’s footsteps.
Indeed, within the last year, specifically, the relevance of one event to the other became harder than ever to dispute, as an unprecedented 31 Oscar noms were allocated to films that had played in Cannes — spread between Anora, The Apprentice, Emilia Pérez, Flow, The Girl with the Needle, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and The Substance — and 40 percent of the eventual Oscar winners traced back to the fest, including Anora (best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and film editing), Emilia Pérez (original song), Flow (animated feature) and The Substance...

We need to talk. If you take my recommendation and check out the movie I’m about to suggest here, you’re going to have a really hard week. It’s going to haunt you. Stick with you in a way few films do. You’re liable to feel sick to your stomach. Honestly, you’re probably going to look at the world in an entirely different way, and it may not be a change that’s for the better. In my own words on the film’s anniversary, the film is “terrifying, thoroughly disturbing, and ten years later, unmatched in its austere psychological honesty.”
Horror means a lot of things, and while this film isn’t necessarily a horror movie, it is among the most upsetting, disturbing, distressing, and just exhausting cinematic experiences you’re ever going to experience. I was haunted and scared in a way few explicit horror films manage,...

True crime served as an inspiration for the Hong Kong born and based film critic-turned-filmmaker Philip Yung for his so far best known work, the thriller “Port of Call” (2015). Semi-true crime stories about the gangster “scene” of Hong Kong in the 60s fuelled his next film, the censored crime-drama “Where the Wind Blows” (2022). And the well-publicised 2010 Heong Wo Street Murder, in which the mentally deranged teenager Kan Ka-leung killed his mother and sister, while his father was at work in the cafe he owned, serves as the starting point of his newest flick “Papa” that premiered at the last year’s edition of Tokyo Film Festival and is currently nominated for three Asian and eleven Hong Kong Film Awards.

Robert Pattinson definitely did not want to freestyle-dance for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love.”
Pattinson told GQ in a video (below) alongside “Mickey 17” writer/director Bong Joon Ho that he almost had a “mental breakdown” amid filming a dance sequence with his co-star Jennifer Lawrence. Pattinson pleaded with Ramsay to have the scene be removed from the script, or be choreographed instead.

They’re like, ‘Just dance, it’s just music playing, just dance,'” Pattinson said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. Berlinale honorary Golden Bear winner Tilda Swinton addressed her presence at the festival in the wake of calls by some in the film community for a boycott in relation to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Swinton was asked by an Israeli journalist during a pressconference today (February 14) on her position on the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (Bds) movement, which works to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians, and is one of the organisations that has publicly called for a boycott of this year’s Berlinale.

There are many factors that contribute to how strong of an impact a movie has on the audience. The originality of the idea; how profound, or occasionally disturbing, the themes touched upon are; the intensity of the actors' performances. Sometimes, however, some movies strike chords so deep, hit too close, or are so authentic that, regardless of their excellent execution, they should be enjoyed only once. The impact is too significant to ever recover from — and this is not limited to the most disturbing horror movies.
Usually, these movies are not the happiest stories you can find on screens, and not just because of a tragic ending. They are intense, challenging, and sometimes even shocking. In their daily life, people seek refuge in movies, but these sorts of titles provide everything but that. They offer something different: uncomfortable questions, doubts, and occasionally, unnerving truths. Although they are not common, there...

The versatile John C. Reilly has been announced as the first honoree at the 19th annual Oscar Wilde Awards.
The event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, is set for Feb. 27 — in its traditional evening spot three days before the Oscars — at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles, its original home.
The casual bash celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. It also fosters artistic collaborations, from giving young actors and singers a profile in the U.S. to encouraging the shooting of films in Ireland.
The Chicago-born Reilly, 59, speaks often of his family’s strong ties to Ireland. A frequent visitor to the country, he served as the International Guest of Honor at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities in 2022.

Over the last 40 years, most of the winners of NBR’s best film has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture, with the exception of films like 1998’s “Gods and Monsters,” 2000’s “Quills” and 2014’s “A Most Violent Year.” In the 1980s, there were technically two misses with 1987’s “Empire of the Sun” and 1983’s “Betrayal,” the latter of which won in a tie with “Terms of Endearment.” So far this decade, Spike Lee’s war drama “Da 5 Bloods” (2020) is the only film to fail to achieve Oscar recognition. We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is reportedly about to embark on another film: revenge thriller Stone Mattress.
With films like We Need To Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here on her impressive resume, there’s no doubt that Lynne Ramsay is a celebrated film director. Given her penchant for making short films too, Ramsay has never been what you’d call a prolific director of features: her last film was 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, and before that, 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. According to a new report, though, Ramsay’s next project may be her second to go before cameras in a single calendar year.
Ramsay has already finished up production on Die, My Love, a film ‘about a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.’ Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek all star.

Jennifer Lawrence plays a new mother who is dealing with bipolar disorder and postpartum depression, and she’s the star of the show. The movie, based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 book of the same name, moves the story from a French village to the vast Montana farmland, giving it a very American feel.
The movie has an impressive ensemble cast and is produced by the famous director Martin Scorsese. Lakeith Stanfield plays Lawrence’s boyfriend, and Robert Pattinson plays her husband. Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, both of whom won Oscars, round out the supporting group.

Up next from director Lynne Ramsay is the psychological thriller Die, My Love, and Deadline has shared the first look at star Jennifer Lawrence in the film.
Die, My Love adapts the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz; Ramsay co-wrote the script with Enda Walsh.
The rural American tale is “set in a remote, forgotten rural area; the story follows a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis.” It’s said to be “a portrait of a woman (Lawrence) engulfed by love and madness.“
Robert Pattinson plays her husband, and Lakeith Stanfield portrays her lover. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also star in the psychological thriller.
The book’s synopsis also gives a clearer picture of the emotional intensity. In the novel, “In a forgotten patch of French countryside, a woman is battling her demons embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning...

Robert Pattinson plays Lawrence’s onscreen husband, with Lakeith Stanfield cast as her lover. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also co-star.
Ramsay returns to directing for her first feature since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here.” Ramsay previously teased “Die, My Love” during the 2023 Sarajevo Film Festival, emphasizing the movie’s divergences from the novel. In contrast, the book was about a woman in a secluded French village who grapples with extreme mental health problems after giving birth. While the evil child is a staple of the horror and thriller genres, there's usually an outside force swaying their behavior. They're possessed by a demon, from outer space, or actually a grown woman who only looks like a child. The danger comes from something that either puts the child in as much trouble or portends the idea that they're not really children at all. Having a villain be a child who is just bad on their own is an uncommon idea, but it's not a new one. In fact, the earliest example of the trope is the 1956 film The Bad Seed, where the seed in question, Rhoda, is a little monster seemingly for no reason. Other films that tackle the same subject, such as The Lodge and We Need To Talk About Kevin, are dreary and deeply confronting pieces, offering no real answers as to the origin or solution...

One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Morvern Callar.Flowers are for life and for death; in Lynne Ramsay’s Morvern Callar (2002), the titular protagonist roams a mausoleum in her new floral party dress, flanked on either side by memorial bouquets. Behind her trail two bewildered literati, who have just offered her £100,000 for the novel they think she wrote. The manuscript’s real author, Morvern’s boyfriend, has been in the ground for a time. After he killed himself, Morvern dismembered and buried his body, emptied his bank account, and went on holiday to Spain. When the publishers ask Morvern what her next project might be, she answers, “I work in a supermarket.”Across her filmography, Ramsay’s main characters are common people who find themselves disoriented and blinking through encounters with death and darkness. Their actual circumstances are ordinary, sordid, tragic, predictable: a child...

Some films capture the "before" events that may have paved the way to a certain killer's horrific deed say, a mass shooting. Others put us right smack in the middle of the terror, with the mass killings playing out in immersive real time for the film's duration. And then, there are movies that opt to eloquently dissect the traumatic aftermath of any sort of violence. All these cinematic reference points have been captured effectively in movies in relation to high school shootings specifically. A "before" example might be We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lynne Ramsay. A captivating "during" film might be the Palme d'Or-winning Elephant by Gus Van Sant. And here, we're discussing an example of the "after" with The Graduates.
And if you've already seen The Fallout (2021) starring Jenna Ortega, this new debut feature by writer-director Hannah Peterson is certainly a good follow-up and also a thought-provoking standalone effort,...

Throughout the 2010s, Brian Duffield more than did his part to keep the art of the original genre movie alive and thriving. Between his screenplays for the babysitter slasher-comedy "The Babysitter," the post-apocalyptic monster adventure "Love and Monsters," and the underwater survival thriller "Underwater", Duffield emerged as one of the hottest talents in Hollywood before fully coming into his own as the writer-director behind the well-received high school horror rom-com "Spontaneous" and essentially dialogue-free alien invasion thriller "No One Will Save You" in the 2020s. But before any of that happened, the first produced film based on one of Duffield's unique scrips became something of a disaster.
The movie in question, "Jane Got a Gun," has the makings of an inventive spin on a familiar tune, much like Duffield's other work. Directed by Gavin O'Connor, the Western casts Natalie Portman as the eponymous firearm-wielding cowlady, a woman whose husband is...

It’s always fascinating to know the reasons why actors decide to go behind the camera for the first time. After all, the subject must have hit a very personal part of their being so as to take up the extraneous effort of mounting an entire story to the screen in a language that is mostly foreign to them. So, when Maggie Gyllenhall was asked why she decided to make The Lost Daughter (now streaming on Netflix), her answer assured me more than anything else.
She said that when she first read Elena Ferrante’s book that goes by the same name, her first line of thought was “Oh my god! This woman is so fucked up and I totally related to her. So am I so fucked up?” As funny as that sounds, the reason feels palpable. I mean, I have always wanted to see a mother on screen...

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

Smile was an interesting film for Robert Salerno, a legendary producer whose work encompasses some of the most distinct and bold cinema of this century so far. Mubi is exactly the service for people who see Mysteries of Lisbon is streaming and ask “yes but what version?” Accordingly I’m excited that September brings the extended, miniseries cut of Raúl Ruiz’s late-career triumph, which arrives alongside the notable new release that is Zia Anger’s My First Film––here programmed in a “Millennial Meltdown” series alongside Sebastián Silva’s Rotting in the Sun and Martine Syms’s The African Desperate. It’s a match made in heaven for a lot of Oscar watchers who are obsessed with actresses (that Venn diagram is a circle). Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star together in director Pedro Almodóvar‘s upcoming English-language feature film debut, “The Room Next Door.” Both women are Oscar winners — Almodóvar too — but it’s been a while since any of them have competed for the academy’s top honors. Pattinson and Lawrence may star together in thriller "Die, My Love" for first time, a departure from lighter roles. Lawrence auditioned for Bella in Twilight but was rejected, potentially changing franchise dynamics. "Die, My Love" promises a mature, chilling narrative for the experienced actors, showcasing their dramatic range.
Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence are in talks to star in a new thriller titled Die, My Love. If both celebrated actors sign on for the project, it would mark the first time in either of their acting careers that they would share a screen together in a feature film. Die, My Love will be directed by Lynne Ramsay, known for her previous directorial work on Joaquin Phoenix's chilling 2017 thriller You Were Never Really Here and the equally unnerving 2011 psychological thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton as the concerned mother of a strange teen named Kevin, played by Ezra Miller.
