Many years later, 2014's "Whiplash" stands out as one of the defining motion pictures of the 2010s. Damien Chazelle's masterclass of a psychological character drama telling the story of a young, ambitious jazz drummer, Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), butting heads with his abusive instructor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), was not the biggest box office success story on its initial release. Still, its legacy has endured thanks to an ever-growing audience that discovered it via DVD, Blu-ray, and streaming. The film was also nominated for five Academy Awards and won three, with Simmons, in particular, taking home the gold for his supporting turn as one of the greatest villains in cinematic history.
What many may not realize, however, is that Chazelle's movie is itself based on "Whiplash," the short film of the same name that the filmmaker had made just a year prior. The 18-minute short was the first iteration...

A primary reason behind Yellowstone‘s immense success was its memorable characters. Besides the leading names, some minor characters have also left an indelible mark on the fans’ minds. Steven Williams’ Cowboy was such a character who had a very brief role in Season 2 but delivered some of the most savage Yellowstone moments.
Taylor Sheridan’s Western TV hit featured a complex web of characters and their family trees. It is tough to keep a check on the number of people driving the story. However, Cowboy was such a character who, even after his brief role, could steal the spotlight.

Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. To Tatum's credit, he never denied his stripping gig but instead turned it into artistic gold (years after he became an actor) with a hit franchise you may have heard about: "Magic Mike" (2012), "Magic Mike Xxl" (2015) and "Magic Mike's Last Dance" (2023).
After being discovered by a talent scout, Tatum started his career with small movie parts until he snagged the lead in "Step Up," (2006), a successful dance/romance mash-up. Tatum's looks and athleticism, as well as his dancing and acting skills attracted casting directors, who began to place him in bigger and bigger films.
With Tatum's skills, that led to films with better and better directors, a list that any actor would envy -- Michael Mann...

Channing Tatum Gambit Trauma (Photo Credit – Instagram)
For Channing Tatum, Marvel movies weren’t just entertainment, they were a reminder of what could’ve been. The actor once poured years of passion and effort into a solo Gambit film, only to watch it crumble. And that sting stuck around.
“I haven’t been able to see any of the [Marvel] movies [since],” Tatum told Variety back in 2022. “I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”
That heartbreak started way back in 2014. Tatum had been cast as Gambit, the smooth-talking, card-slinging mutant from the X-Men universe. The plan? Introduce him in X-Men: Apocalypse and follow it up with a solo film. But the rollout never happened.

Channing Tatum believes his next film is going to be a very special one. The actor recently talked about his role in Roofman at this year's CinemaCon.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum appeared during Paramount Pictures' studio presentation at CinemaCon to talk about Roofman, which is set for release on Oct. 3. "I know everybody’s come and out and said they have something special to show you. They lied," Tatum said. "I am the one who has something special to show you. That movie is Roofman, it is a really, really special movie.
Roofman is a crime drama directed by Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines), and its story is a biopic of Jeffrey Manchester, a former U.S. Army Reserve officer and fugitive. Tatum went on to praise Cianfrance's work on the project. "He's crafted this movie that is an immensely entertaining ride, equal parts devastating, emotional and somehow hilarious.

While audiences might be getting sick of sequels, remakes, and reboots, there's at least one coming to theaters this summer that we're actually looking forward to. "The Naked Gun" franchise is being revived with Liam Neeson taking on the role of Frank Debin Jr., son of Leslie Nielsen's Detective Frank Drebin from the original "Naked Gun" spoof trilogy of films that spawned from the short-lived comedy series "Police Squad!"
While reviving old comedy franchises can be rather risky, "The Naked Gun" comes with a promising filmmaker behind the camera, one who hasn't found much box office success but has consistently delivered some of the greatest comedies of the 21st century. Akiva Shaffer, one-third of the groundbreaking "Saturday Night Live" comedy group known as The Lonely Island, who ushered in the era of the "SNL Digital Short," is directing the film, having previously been at helm of "Hot Rod" (which...

Amazon MGM Studios started its inaugural CinemaCon presentation with a bang: the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, a new science-fiction feature from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) with a script from Drew Goddard. As revealed in the trailer — and likely familiar to anyone who has read Weir’s best-selling book — Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut sent on a longshot mission to save the planet as the sun begins to die. Ryland, the lone survivor of the trip, eventually comes face-to-face with an alien who similarly wants to save the universe.

Ryan Gosling, looking very nerdy and quite un-Ken-like, plays a science teacher turned grudging astronaut in “Project Hail Mary,” a sci-fi adventure that Amazon MGM Studios teased during its presentation to theater owners at CinemaCon on Wednesday.
“I put the ‘not’ in astronaut,” Gosling tells the government handler (Sandra Hüller) who has tapped him to undertake a suicidal space mission. “I can’t even moonwalk.”
The film, an adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel of the same name, follows an ordinary man who is told he has what it takes to go into the outer reaches of the universe. “You have the right stuff,” Gosling tells Hüller. “I have the wrong stuff.”
He may be reluctant, but the situation is dire. A catastrophic event threatens life as he knows it. “The world is counting on you,” Hüller tells him.

New Line President and Cco Richard Brener confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Ice Cube had reached a deal to write and star in Last Friday, which will directly follow Friday After Next (2002). Ice Cube mentioned last summer that he was pushing for another Friday movie to get made, but that he wasn’t making any ground convincing Warner Bros. that it was worthwhile. There is no word on if Chris Tucker, Mike Epps, or John Witherspoon are attached to star. It is also unknown at this time who will direct the film, and additional casting is ongoing. Exclusive: On the heels of signing with Amazon MGM Studios to produce the next iteration of James Bond films alongside David Heyman, Amy Pascal has closed a multiyear first-look film deal for her Pascal Pictures banner.
Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have a first look at narrative features that Pascal and producing partner Rachel O’Connor percolate. The James Bond film will not be part of the overall deal.
Pascal seemed a natural choice along with Heyman to steer the next batch of Bond films. During her dozen years running Sony Pictures’ film and TV divisions, she oversaw Daniel Craig’s first 007 outings Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, the latter becoming the first Bond film to crack the billion-dollar mark at the global box office. After exiting the exec suites at Sony, Pascal took over the Tom Holland-starrer Spider-Man franchise as producer, along with the Tom Hardy Venom series.

Johnny Depp is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. While the entire Amber Heard trial did hamper his career in a number of ways, he still holds a great fan following. But long before he played the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow, he was a teen heartthrob who ruled television in the late ’80s.

Powell took to his personal Instagram to announce that The Running Man has wrapped filming, leaving over seven months of post-production to make its November 7 release date. The Running Man is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it is based on the popular novel by Stephen King. While 1987’s The Running Man relied on Schwarzenegger for most of its draw, Glen Powell’s iteration has built a stellar ensemble around him. Powell’s Twisters co-star Katy O’Brian will play a fellow contestant in the film, with Colman Domingo portraying Bobby Thompson and Josh Brolin playing Dan Killian. Lee Pace will also play Evan McCone, with Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and more filling out the rest of the cast in undisclosed roles.

Channing Tatum first rose to fame thanks to his unbeatable dancing skills. Many of his hit films included dancing, like 2006's Step Up, or the Magic Mike franchise, where he was extremely fit.
Over the years, his acting credits featured more diverse roles than the aforementioned, but he continued to star in movies that required him to be in shape, including the role of Duke in the action films G.I. Joe, 2012's 21 Jump Street, and 2013's White House Down. He finally played his dream superhero role, Gambit, in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor has branched out to other roles since but revealed on Instagram that he wouldn't accept more "fat roles" after showing off his ripped physique.

Plenty of shows and movies will also join the Hulu library; the Emmy-winning original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns after a three-year hiatus with its sixth and final season, and FX will premiere the limited series “Dying for Sex” starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (based on the podcast from Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer).

A cult classic comedy franchise starring Ice Cube has multiple installments trending on streaming three decades after the premiere of the first movie. Ice Cube is best known as a rap icon, having been a key member of the gangsta rap group N.W.A., which was formed in 1987. In the early 1990s, he began a career as an actor, making his feature debut in the 1991 John Singleton classic Boyz n the Hood, following that up with performances in Walter Hill's Trespass and Charles Burnett's The Glass Shield.
However, over the years, Ice Cube began to embrace more of a comic persona onscreen, which led him to star in multiple franchises in the comedy genre over the years. This includes the Barbershop franchise, which now includes three movies, a spinoff, and a television remake. He also starred in the 2005 road trip comedy Are We There Yet? and its 2007 sequel Are We Done Yet?...

The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, which concludes on Saturday, featured a time-traveling Rv, a disemboweling unicorn, a transracial surgery and credible testimony that extra-terrestrials exist. Here’s what rose to the top, and what failed to take flight.
Homicidal Unicorns and a Singing Matthew McConaughey Stole the Show
SXSW has distinguished itself among the top film festivals with its Headliners section, a lineup of star-driven, studio-backed, crowd-pleasing premieres that thrill SXSW audiences and help launch the films into their wide releases — from “Bridesmaids,” “21 Jump Street,” and “A Quiet Place” to “Us,” “John Wick 4” and “The Idea of You.”
This year, only one Headliner fully fit the bill: The gory horror comedy “Death of a Unicorn,” starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, had the audience laughing, screaming and cheering along with its story of a pair of homicidal fantasy creatures dispatching a über-wealthy family in the Canadian wilderness.

Buddy cop movies are a staple of the action-comedy genre, pairing mismatched partners who must overcome their differences to chase down criminals. Director Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series is well-known for popularizing the buddy-cop genre, as Mel Gibson's reckless cop and Danny Glover's by-the-book officer made for plenty of mishaps and over-the-top action sequences. The 1980s/90s franchise went on to inspire a new wave of buddy cop films, including Rush Hour, Bad Boys, and Shanghai Noon.
More recently, the genre has evolved with hits like 21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, The Heat, and The Nice Guys. Among the modern entries in the genre, Ride Along carved out its own space thanks to the comedic energy of Kevin Hart, which paired hilariously with Ice Cube's stoic intensity. With a $154 million global box office haul, Ride Along became a surprise hit, setting the stage for its 2016 sequel.

Regal Theaters has a cool program where on Monday nights they offer a “Mystery Movie” night for $5. You don’t know the movie you’re going to see, but it’s usually an upcoming release. My wife and I went last week… and it ended up being a movie I had circled on my release calendar: “Novocaine.” And I’m so happy to report the movie is awesome. It follows this mild-mannered bank executive (played by Jack Quaid) who literally can’t feel pain – like at all. But when a robbery goes down and his coworker gets taken hostage, he has to step up in the most ridiculous, over-the-top way possible. It’s got some of the most inventive action sequences I’ve ever seen – all using his special ability to make it happen. Watching it...

Hollywood was familiar territory to Dakota Johnson. For those unversed, her parents, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, were household names in the industry. Johnson made her debut at 10 years of age in Crazy in Alabama.
Subsequently, she took on shorter roles in films like The Social Network and 21 Jump Street. The actress was constructing her career, but the breakout role hadn’t come yet to her. That was altered in 2015 with Fifty Shades of Grey. However, taking on the role of Anastasia Steele wasn’t an effortless selection. The role came with fame, scrutiny, and a career shift.
But saying yes wasn’t easy. Johnson knew the franchise was massive—but not in a “cinematic masterpiece” way. For better or worse, this role would follow her forever. So, naturally, she needed a second opinion. To help make her decision, Johnson turned to someone she trusted—Emily Blunt.

In November of 1994, Marvel Comics launched an X-Men title to feature an almost all-brand-new crop of teen characters called, collectively, Generation X. The team consisted of the established X-Woman Jubilee, joined by striking superpowered high-schoolers like Chamber, Husk, Skin, Mondo, M, and Synch. The team was overseen by Banshee and the White Queen, and their adventures aimed to be hipper and edgier -- in that MTV sort of way -- than those of their adult counterparts.
"Generation X" was a modest hit with comics readers, but not enough to stick around indefinitely. The series ended after three years and 75 issues. The characters, however, were perfect fodder for a "young 'n' hip" version of the X-Men, a fact that TV producers at Fox latched onto. In 1996, Fox executive producer Eric Blakeney, one of the writers of "21 Jump Street," felt he could take his previous show's "teens as undercover law enforcers" shtick,...

We are well past the point of Peak TV — the era named by FX President John Landgraf about just how many television shows and channels seem to exist now — where we used to only have a handful of network options and a smattering of cable choices. Now, we have hundreds upon hundreds of shows each year, yet so few shows break through the noise unless you happen to notice that one of them has been canceled despite never having had the name recognition of something like "The Big Bang Theory" or "Game of Thrones." What's more, some shows can have a noticeable impact at the moment, but they don't seem to resonate once they're off the air. Those two aforementioned titles are among the most familiar to the American masses despite not having aired new episodes for years. It helps that they've each had spin-offs, and live on via reruns in some cases,...

Fans of Johnny Depp have been watching his slow reintegration into Hollywood with interest in the years since his legal wrangling with Amber Heard came to a conclusion. While the actor has stayed away from the mainstream spotlight since then, he has been slowly building up a list of potential roles, one of which sees him playing Satan in the latest movie from visionary director Terry Gilliam. After a long period without any updates, it seems that the movie is still being worked on and is expected to start filming this year.
Originally entitled The Carnival at the End of Days, the film will now reportedly just run under the truncated title of Carnival. Considering Gilliam is behind such movies as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus, the original title was not exactly out of character, but it looks like short and intriguing is now the name of the game.

When it comes to naming the TV shows that created a romanticized, wildly unrealistic version of policing, "Dragnet" is often at the top of the list. The show gets mentioned for good reason; while previous shows had portrayed cops as bumbling and imperfect, "Dragnet" was made with the direct input -- and, importantly, approval -- of the Los Angeles Police Department. Thus, as cultural critics including Vox's Constance Grady have pointed out, "Dragnet" all but invented "copaganda," normalizing the myth that most cops are inherently heroic, caring, quick to act, and justice-oriented. You know, all the things that we know are totally true about the LAPD.
If "Dragnet" tops this hypothetical list, "Adam-12" shouldn't be far behind. The series was co-created by Jack Webb, who had also made "Dragnet." It takes place inside the same fictional universe, and it was also reportedly made with input from the LAPD. Its squeaky-clean...

Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most popular Hollywood stars in the current time. Pirates of the Caribbean is a legendary franchise that inspired, and still continues to inspire, many works, and its fame and contributions extend even to anime.

If we talk about anime that has a massive amount of reach, regardless of country and language, there are few of them out there. Of these, possibly the longest-running anime series is Doraemon.
Doraemon started airing in 1979 and soon went on to be dubbed in dozens of languages, reaching more than 60 countries. The series about a futuristic Robo-cat with many incredible gadgets was so iconic that the legendary star, Johnny Depp, jumped when he had the chance to voice over one of its characters for a special.

Exhibitions honoring the work of “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho and the production design team behind “Barbie” and “Anna Karenina” will be featured at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures starting this spring.
The “Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho” exhibit is the first museum ever dedicated to the Oscar-winning director and will open March 23, providing rare access to his archive and personal collection, storyboards, research materials and on-set photographs.
The “Barbie to Anna Karenina: The Cinematic Worlds of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer” exhibit will provide an immersive look into the pair’s collaboration over the last 25 years. Claire Dunphy may just be into the firefighters of LA, but Modern Family star Julie Bowen had a different crush back in the day. The actress began her career in the ‘90s and was struggling to make it in Hollywood while the decade saw the emergence of the quirky yet attractive Johnny Depp.
Bowen mentioned that she had a huge crush on Depp and had even fantasized about how they would fall in love when she was hanging out at his club ‘The Viper Room’. While she imagined a cinematic meet-cute, fate seemed to have other plans and the first time they met in real life turned out to be like a Modern Family episode.

A night out with your best friends is still the best night ever.
I saw “One of Them Days” in theaters over the weekend and I have to recommend it. It’s a buddy comedy that follows two best friends (Keke Palmer and Sza) who are trying to make rent before they’re kicked out of their apartment. The film is funny and heartfelt – the two leads have a ton of chemistry, you believe they’ve been best friends for a decade – and the plot is wild and entertaining. Ultimately, it’s about what buddy comedies are about: a great friendship that makes each person better. It got me thinking about other awesome buddy comedies out there – so, here are my favorite top seven buddy comedy movies you can stream right now.
