Obliterated has lived up to its name. Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of the hourlong action-comedy series.
The cancellation comes as a little bit of a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series following its Nov. 30 release, peaking at No.1 in Week 2. The streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost.
From Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, Obliterated tells the story of an elite Special Forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovered that a bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now-intoxicated team had to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb and save the world.

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald initially set out to write Obliterated as a feature film. But the creators of Netflix’s latest action comedy changed their minds. They felt their ensemble cast of characters would be best served in a series where they would have time to explore each one in depth, and be able to give each character their own adventure.
The result is the eight-episode series now streaming on Netflix, which follows an elite special forces team — made up of an ensemble cast led by Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig — who wake up with a massive hangover and attempt to break up a deal for a nuclear weapon that could obliterate Las Vegas. Terrence Terrell, Paola Lázaro, Kimi Rutledge, Eugene Kim, C. Thomas Howell, Alyson Gorske and Carl Lumbly round out the cast.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Movies might seem like magic, but Hollywood’s favorite actors, directors, producers, stunt performers, props masters, costumers, script coordinators, and cinematographers are still only human. Since before that child extra prematurely covered his ears for Eva Marie Saint shooting Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” audiences have delighted in finding the little moments that make their favorite films imperfect.
Like freckles on a human face, mistakes can make movies infinitely more special to the audiences that love them. Consider the clumsy stormtrooper of “A New Hope,” whose hilariously audible collision with an Imperial spaceship doorframe turned the extra’s true identity into an ongoing mystery for the Star Wars ages. Or, for “The Lord of the Rings” fans among us, there’s the anachronistic automobile appearing in “Fellowship of the Ring” right alongside Sam and Frodo. As for the Wizarding World, how about that bike seat on Harry’s broomstick?...

How do you solve a problem like Chevy Chase? Throughout his lengthy career, the actor has had a long, troubled history of acting like a jerk to nearly everyone he's worked with, from the infamous backstage fight he had with Bill Murray upon leaving Saturday Night Live to his much-publicized feud with showrunner Dan Harmon while co-starring on the beloved NBC sitcom "Community." By many accounts, the star is, at best, annoying to work with, and, at worst, an insufferable jerk.
That behavior would seem to be the end-all, be-all explanation for why Chase's film career eventually floundered despite having a pretty strong start. Yet, like most things, that isn't the whole story: for one, Chase is an incredibly talented actor and comedian, despite his personal shortcomings. For another, his persona being what it is — this is the man who made a splash announcing himself on SNL as "I'm Chevy Chase,...

Lizzy Caplan is lying. Well, let’s rephrase that: Lizzy Caplan is selectively truth-telling. Lounging in a gray Texas Longhorns T-shirt and yellow-green leggings, Caplan has such a stripped-down, let’s-talk-about-it approachability, you would think we were having a late-night sleepover chat instead of a cross-continental Zoom. “I’m acting on a show right now,” teased Quinn, declining to offer up the project’s title. “I started out acting in scripted and I really wanted to get back into it.”
She even name-checked a certain A-lister whose career she wants to emulate. “I’m not saying I am Lady Gaga but the fact that she can do these really big roles and pull it off, whether it’s American Horror Story or A Star is Born, I want to do things like that,” continued Quinn...

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you’ll no doubt find a number of genre outlets running lists of horror movies to watch for the most romantic day of the year. Warm Bodies is likely to appear on most if not all of them, but there’s another reason to revisit the 2013 film this year: Lionsgate is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) edition in Steelbook packaging, available exclusively at Best Buy.
I realize Twilight is practically a pejorative on a horror site, but we probably wouldn’t have Warm Bodies if sparkling vampires hadn’t paved the way. Both films are coming-of-age romances with monsters based on young adult books. Warm Bodies has the added benefit of the proliferation of zombies in pop culture heralded by The Walking Dead, plus a sense of humor akin to Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

John Milius' Reagan-era action hit "Red Dawn" wasn't just a running "Hot Tub Time Machine" gag; the Cold War fantasy of guerilla patriot youths marked a new peak of commercial success for the "Wind and the Lion" director and stimulated the careers of several of its young stars.
The story, of teen freedom fighters repelling commies in Soviet-invaded Colorado, was a box-office smash in the summer of 1984, nestled alongside the Los Angeles Olympics — which the Soviets were boycotting after the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Olympics four years prior. Filled with All-American treasures like Chevy pickup trucks and Coca-Cola to defend, the movie depended on strong performances from the actors who would play the "Wolverine" partisans. These kids weren't particularly political; their claim was a simple 1:1 reaction to being invaded. The "Fletch" movies have always been the product of turmoil. I.M. Fletcher, a hybrid private eye and journalist, made his first appearance in Gregory McDonald's 1974 novel "Fletch," following the investigator as he looks into a shady but tempting offer from a fat cat billionaire. His big-screen debut came in Michael Ritchie's ("Bad News Bears") 1985 feature of the same name, starring Chevy Chase in the lead role of the loose adaptation; it was a box-office smash. Four years later, the sequel "Fletch Lives" saw Chase and Ritchie reprising their respective roles in a follow-up Roger Ebert once described as a "dispirited slog through the rummage sale of movie cliches."
Since then, Fletch has undergone more iterations than his numerous implausible identities. The most talked about version is Kevin Smith's unproduced "Fletch Won," which he envisioned as a Miramax vehicle for "Mallrats" star and frequent Smith collaborator Jason Lee.

Though the sappy message in “Spirited” preaches that people can change, this spiffy musical comedy sure feels like an homage to tried-and-true Hollywood classics. , like a loud sweater or syrupy fireside cocoa. Proudly wearing its adaptation status on its sleeve, “Spirited” turns Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” into a contemporary feel-good comedy — with flashy musical numbers to boot.
Reprising some of the shenanigans of his lovable “Elf” character, reliable funnyman Will Ferrell plays a jovial ghost of Christmas present opposite a dastardly Ryan Reynolds as a modern day Scrooge. Bolstered by a stellar ensemble, both Ferrell and Reynolds make surprisingly charming showmen, impressing with confident crooning — and even some light choreo. It’s refreshing to see two stars who could have easily phoned it in for the rest of their careers push themselves to try new things.
Even more thrilling, they really can sing!

Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

Scientific research tells us that nearly all of the cells in the human body are renewed every seven years. Personally, I like to think that explains the “seven-year itch,” the phenomenon by which so many of us change jobs, friends and such on a predictable cycle: because you’re literally not the same person anymore.
It’s been eight years since Albee (Amber Midthunder) and Walker (Taylor Gray) got married, and their relationship is running on fumes. A surprisingly serious-minded drama from “Hot Tub Time Machine” helmer Steve Pink (who co-wrote Gen X John Cusack romances “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “High Fidelity”), no-frills indie “The Wheel” follows this couple on a weekend retreat to a remote Airbnb, where the pair plan to hash things out once and for all.
Walker has brought along a self-help book, “Seven Questions to Save Your Marriage.” Albee says she’s game, but seldom looks away from her iPhone.

Craig Robinson, the star of “The Office” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” was evacuated from the Charlotte, N.C. comedy club where he was scheduled to perform on Saturday night after a man brandished a gun and demanded everyone leave the venue. He later discharged the firearm, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which reports that there were no injuries and the suspect is in custody. The club was evacuated before the gun was fired, police said.
Robinson shared the experience on social media. “I’m safe,” he said in a video message on Instagram. “I’m cool. It was wild I was in the green room and they’re like ‘everybody get out.’ It was a moment for sure.”
Robinson posted the video while watching a Big Time Rush concert at the Metro Credit Union Amphitheater, saying that he had been told to go to the nearby theater while...

Quiver Distribution has acquired “The Wheel,” a relationship drama about a young couple on the brink of divorce. That film is from Steve Pink, the co-writer of “High Fidelity” and the director of “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “About Last Night.” It premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Quiver will distribute the film on July 22, 2022. It stars Amber Midthunder (Hulu’s upcoming “Prey”) and Taylor Gray (“Star Wars: Rebels”). Bethany-Anne Lind (“Reprisal”), Nelson Lee (“Stargirl”), Carly Nykanen (“Bosch”), and Kevin Pasdon (“Dexter: New Blood”) round out the cast, with a script from Trent Atkinson (“Home and Away”).

Randy Rand, the founding bassist for Autograph, which had a hair-metal hit with “Turn Up the Radio” in the mid-1980s, has died. The news was posting on the band’s social media pages, but no details were given.

“Although beyond devastated, we find some comfort and solace knowing the last couple of years have been some of his happiest as an artist and as a performer,” the group wrote on Instagram (see the full post below). “Randy was the consummate optimist and was so excited to see the new direction, creativity and renewed energy with the band. You could feel his excitement – as it was quite palpable with his playing abilities, performances and the way he interacted with his beloved fans.”
Also featuring singer Steve Plunkett, guitarist Steve Lynch, drummer Keni Richards and keys player Steven Ishram, Autograph arose from the late-’70s Los Angeles-area rock scene.

Exclusive: Following the critical acclaim of his Netflix comedy Bad Trip, director Kitao Sakurai has set his sights on his next major studio pic, being set to helm 72 Hours for Sony Pictures. John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner along with Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald through their Counterbalance Entertainment. Davis Entertainment’s John Fox and Jeremy Stein are executive producing.
While the plot is being kept under wraps, top-tier talent already is lining up, given the heat behind Bad Trip and Cobra Kai. Hurwitz and Schlossberg wrote the original screenplay for 72 Hours, with rewrites by Nicholas Thomas.
Sakurai has been a rising star in directing circles and gained support from his peers after directing and executive producing The Eric Andre Show for Adult Swim. Universal Pictures debuts new trailer for the DreamWorks animated feature ‘The Bad Guys.’
Based on the New York Times best-selling book series, a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws are about to attempt their most challenging con yet—becoming model citizens.
Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys—dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf, seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake, chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark, short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha and sharptongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula, aka “Webs.”
But when, after years of countless heists and being the world’s most-wanted villains, the gang is finally caught, Mr. Wolf brokers a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save them all from prison: The Bad Guys will go good.
Under the tutelage of their mentor Professor Marmalade, an arrogant (but adorable!) guinea pig, The Bad Guys set out to fool the world that they’ve been transformed. Along the way,...

Over three decades after its release, "Back to the Future" remains one of the most beloved films ever made. Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald’s Counterbalance Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, where the company is under an overall deal, have acquired rights to Marc Fisher’s Washington Post article “Powerball mystery: Someone in this tiny town won $731 million. Craig Robinson’s career is marked by moments of high comedy, but his latest project has him relying on something different — choreography.
The actor, known for his turns on “The Office,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” among others, is working on a new project on behalf of Procter & Gamble that aims to get consumers to harness their sense of smell. In an ad that offers a new version of Michael Sembello’s 1983 hit “Maniac,” Robinson dances his way through a story of a “small town guy on a laundry night” who is encouraged by the scent of Gain, the P&g detergent and cleaning product with a smell that has proven to be a powerful draw over the years. “I’m a Gain-iac,” he declares.
Somewhere among the outtakes, says Robinson, “there is an extended dance version. Watch out. I was all over the place.”

Now, ahead of the Primetime Emmy Awards this month and Cobra Kai’s Season 4 premiere in December, Sony Pictures TV has stepped up with an early renewal of Counterbalance’s three-year overall deal for four more years.

When Cobra Kai was first announced as a new series based on the iconic The Karate Kid films, fans were immediately skeptical if the iteration would match up to the legendary status of the original. But creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg made the smart move by not only bringing back the decades-long feud between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), but also by turning the narrative away from Johnny’s downtrodden point of view seen in the films. The new take and a next generation of talented newcomers has made Cobra Kai one of Netflix’s most popular series on the streamer. In conversation with Stevie Wong, Macchio and Zabka explain the joys of The Karate Kid legacy and being able to revisit their characters through a fresh lens.

This article contains spoilers for Loki episode 1.
Early on in the first episode of Marvel’s latest Disney+ series Loki, the titular God of Mischief stands trial for his crimes.
He isn’t being charged with the crimes we’re familiar, mind you, which is to say attempted homicide, fratricide, and even genocide, but rather something far more serious: time crimes. As he stands before Time Variance Authority judge Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Loki does what many accused criminals do and attempts to blame someone else.
Surely, it’s the Avengers that the Tva wants, not little ol’ Loki. The Avengers staged an elaborate time heist that saw no fewer than 10 individuals go back in time to remove sacred objects from their respective timelines and use them in the present. All Loki did was grab a glowing blue cube!
Then Judge Ravonna reveals something quite surprising. Everything that the Avengers did was supposed to happen.

Legendary has closed a deal for Counterbalance Entertainment’s Josh Heald (“Cobra Kai”) to direct a feature film adaptation of The History Channel’s hit series “Ancient Aliens,” the company announced Wednesday.
“Ancient Aliens” was originally developed for television by Prometheus Entertainment and executive produced by the late Kevin Burns. Details of the project are being kept under wraps, but the story will be a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries. The film adaptation will be written and executive produced by Luke Ryan.
“Helming my first feature with this same dream team who believed in me very early in my career is incredibly special,” Heald said in a statement to TheWrap. “My partners and I are fired up to produce this epic story with Mary, Cale and Luke. It’s a homecoming for me personally — and another bold step for Counterbalance Entertainment.
