“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made a surprise appearance on the theatrical release calendar this October and has already become the second-highest grossing concert documentary ever, drawing in fans who wanted to re-experience her Eras Tour in movie form and those who weren’t able to catch this summer’s concert. But while “The Eras Tour” movie still isn’t the top music doc (yet), it’s something of an outlier when it comes to just how much it’s made at the box office — $178 million and counting.
Several other big-name musicians and bands have released documentaries about their tours or certain albums, but the only ones to come close to the success of “The Eras Tour” include Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber, so far. Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” tour documentary, slated for a Dec. 1 release, could further shake up the stats and the box office.

The first season of "True Detective," which aired on HBO in 2014, takes place in multiple time frames. Louisiana detectives Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) spent a harrowing time in 1995 investigating the murder of a young woman named Dora Lange. Years later, in 2012, they had to revisit the case and other unsolved cases besides.
The first season was overwhelmingly well-received, earning six Primetime Emmy nominations, and winning one for director Cary Fukunaga. Many essays were written about the series, with some looking at the rundown, Southern aesthetic, and others examining the show's unfettered look at a toxically masculine worldview, where the women on "True Detective" merely exist as tools to be used or rejected by the men. The series seems to take place in a parallel 1950s hard-boiled universe not too far away from the era's ultra-salacious EC Comics.
In the 1995 segments, Hart is having an affair...

When Peter Capaldi was cast as the 12th Doctor, we found ourselves with a big article on One Direction to write. And we've done it...
This bit is not part of the word count. Instead, it seems important to set the scene.
On Saturday 3rd August 2013, I sent out a Tweet from the Den Of Geek account, which looked something like this:
If Peter Capaldi is cast as the 12th Doctor tomorrow night, we will commit to a good 3000 words on the One Direction movie.

If you were reading Den Of Geek back in 2010, you may recall we ran a series of blockbuster movie preview feature articles. Because we were having a light-hearted moment, we ran one for Sex And The City 2. If you clicked on that article...

The Jonas Brothers have teased that they may film another concert movie in the future.
The siblings, famous for their Disney films from the Camp Rock franchise, have done their own thing in the last few years - with Nick Jonas on stage in London's Les Misérables production and Kevin in an E! reality show - but recently reunited.
The trio spoke to MTV News about working on another movie, but said that it wouldn't be in the style of their 2009 picture Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.
When asked about the possibility of a new big-screen outing, Nick replied: "Maybe. We will see. We had fun shooting that movie."
He revealed that it was difficult as they had to "really play to the camera," adding: "If we did [another concert film], we would go for a more artistic approach and less just kind of pointing at the camera.

The Amazing Spider-Man easily held on its lead on Friday, though it doesn't quite seem to be reaching the heights of previous entries in the franchise. Meanwhile, Oliver Stone's Savages got off to a fine start in fifth place, while Katy Perry: Part of Me looks like it's coming down on the wrong side of the concert genre. Spider-Man earned $20.7 million on Friday, which brings its four-day total to $95.7 million. That's way off from all previous Spider-Man movies, which had made at least $125.9 million through the same point. Opening on a Tuesday does skew those results, though, and The Amazing Spider-Man should close that gap significantly over the next two days. Sony is currently forecasting between $60 and $65 million for the three-day weekend, which translates to a $135 million to $140 million six-day start.Ted had another great day on Friday, dropping 49 percent to $10.5 million. That gross is about on par with...

This summer, Katy Perry will be taking fans on a candy-coated, 3-D adventure when she drops her first-ever 3-D concert flick, "Part Of Me."
After rumors hit the Web earlier this year that the pop singer was in talks to bring her brand of cotton-candy eye candy to a theater near you, on Wednesday, MTV News confirmed that the flick, named after her current Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection single, will be the latest spectacle to hit the cineplex.
Over the last few years, it has become quite popular for pop stars to film their concerts and bring them to theaters in 3-D. Perry now joins the ranks of "Glee," Miley Cyrus (and her alter-ego Hannah Montana), the Jonas Brothers,...

We’re counting on Gaston Wahlberg to lead the way! In a weekend that saw both the Mark Wahlberg thriller Contraband and Disney’s 3-D re-release of Beauty and the Beast perform better than expected, it was the former that crossed the finish line in first place.
The R-rated Contraband, which stars Wahlberg as a former smuggler trying to protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, earned an estimated $24.1 million over the standard three-day weekend, and looks to finish the four-day holiday weekend with about $28 million. That’s a solid start for the $25 million movie, a remake of the 2008 Icelandic thriller Reykjavík-Rotterdam.

With one of Mark Wahlberg's best openings ever, Contraband managed to hold off Beauty and the Beast (3D) to claim first place over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Chart stalwart Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol took third place ahead of newcomer Joyful Noise, while The Devil Inside had one of the worst second weekend drops ever. The Top 12 made around $116 million this weekend, which is about on par with the same frame last year.Contraband debuted to an estimated $24.1 million for the three-day weekend. That ranks seventh all-time for star Mark Wahlberg. Most of the movies ahead of it are either established brands (Planet of the Apes) or ensemble pieces (The Departed), though, and Contraband wound up ahead of similar movies like Four Brothers ($21.2 million), The Italian Job ($19.5 million), and Shooter ($14.5 million). It also outperformed January action movies Edge of Darkness ($17.2 million) and Smokin' Aces ($14.6 million), and it was...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes fended off an onslaught of four new nationwide releases to top the weekend box office again. The Help won the debut dust-up, blind-siding a tepid Final Destination 5, while 30 Minutes or Less and Glee The 3D Concert Movie floundered. Descending 50 percent, Rise of the Planet of the Apes packed an estimated $27.5 million. Though steep, the sci-fi thriller's second weekend slide was less severe than Planet of the Apes (2001), I, Robot, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and X-Men: First Class, among comparable titles. With a $104.9 million haul in ten days, Rise is tracking ahead of fellow 20th Century Fox prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class ($98 million) and has out-grossed most of its key comps through the same point, aside from the last Planet remake's $123.7 million (or $174.2 million normalized for ticket-price inflation). Did you know that Justin Bieber has an origin story? I mean, not a real origin story, which would presuppose some superpower on the part of this little cretin other than a prepubescent voice and a winsome smile. There's no real overarching cause for his existence, for Bieber is merely a YouTube sensation gone global. Ladies and gentlemen, this movie proudly presents the Origin Story of a Dipshit.
As hard as Justin Bieber: Never Say Never tries to be A Hard Day's Night, I cannot deign to make that comparison. For one thing, Bieber was merely a misspelling of "beaver" until 2008. He hasn't earned his keep, and he likely won't, so let's not insult The Beatles, shall we? We'll just compare him to the most recently available example of blind tween "musical" worship, The Jonas Brothers, who were plenty inexplicable on their very own, but at least they never pretended to be anything but fluff.

With Disney making fewer live-action movies, longtime president of physical production Bruce Hendricks is exiting the studio in a mutual parting of the ways.
Hendricks' ties to Disney extend beyond the top post. He also directed Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert and Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.
As head of physical production for more than a decade, Hendricks worked on dozens of live-action projects, including the Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure franchises.
Hendricks is stll at the studio on a consulting basis for the next several months, but is no longer running the physical production division.
Since taking over as chair of Disney, Rich Ross has said the studio will make fewer of its own titles. The only 2011 Disney live-action movies dated so far are Prom, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
and the untitled Muppets movie.
That lessens the demand on the physical production division.

Braving the blizzard of bland that has ruled our nation’s multiplexes over the past few weeks, four new releases took on 2011’s notoriously parsimonious box office on Friday. Presales from preteens helped the 3D biopic Justin Bieber: Never Say Never take the Friday crown, with an estimated $12.2 million from 3,105 locations. That is roughly equivalent to what Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience earned in its initial three days back in February of 2009. However shocking it may seem, Bieber’s pic may have peaked early. Projections put Friday’s number two film, Just Go With It, in first place by Sunday. The Adam Sandler comedy brought in an estimated $9.7 million in its debut but is expected to climb past $30 million on the strength of its Valentine’s Day appeal. Disney’s animated Gnomeo and Juliet placed third on Friday with $6.1 million but, with a nice Saturday bump from the family set,...

America has come down with a severe case of Bieber Fever, and stars Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Channing Tatum, among others, are left looking for a cure. The 3-D concert pic, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," topped all comers at the Friday box-office, pulling in $12.35 million from 3,105 screens to start the Valentine's Day weekend.
The performance film continues the music-themed genre's revitalization in recent years, following strong February openings for the similarly styled "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" in 2009 and "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World's Concert Tour" in 2008.
The flick's success could also be due in part to Bieber's insistence that the concert film/documentary is not just for his teen-girl fans, but will also entertain their guy friends.

Let's face it: you're a little bit intrigued by the new Justin Bieber documentary "Never Say Never." If you're like me, it's all those cute little baby videos that sucked you in from the first trailer. Or if you're like Channing Tatum, it's because you understand that it's an inevitability. Still, the reviews are positive so far and it's supposed to be a great 3D experience.
"Never Say Never" is poised for a big box office weekend, and that will make it the second 3D documentary about a major performing artist in a year to bring home bucketloads of cast. The first, of course, was the Michael Jackson doc "This Is It" directed by Kenny Ortega. And, though they weren't documentaries, the concert films "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World Concert" and "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" also went on to achieve great success in theaters.

It’s official. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” – along with M. Night Shyamalan’s ”The Last Airbender” – leads the nominations with nine. Unfortunately, those nominations are not for the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards, or even the People’s Choice Awards. “Eclipse” is nominated for nine Golden Raspberries (aka Razzies), an award that “celebrates” the worst in film.
I know. I screamed at my computer monitor, too.

I Am Number Four
Opens: February 18th 2011
Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, Teresa Palmer
Director: D.J. Caruso
Summary: Nine infant aliens flee their home planet to hide out on Earth. The species that destroyed their planet however has followed them and sets out to hunt them down. As the infants grow into teenagers with special powers, three of them are killed. A fourth has fallen in love and now has something to stand up and fight for.
Analysis: In premise and look, this sounds like a big budget and more action-oriented reboot of late sci-fi teen drama "Roswell". Though based on a young adult novel series, it was another title in this category that was the impetus for this adaptation - Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series. Any novels with a focus on teen romance and an other worldly touch are presently being bought up right and...

More and more frequently, the content of a film, the director or the cast is becoming less of a priority. Instead, the phrase "In mind-blowing 3D" has become the tagline norm just as much as the wit on display when marketing execs decide "Slow justice is no justice" is fitting for the 2D fare. I, as should all of us, blame James Cameron.
As innocent as Cameron's effect on cinema may have been, thanks to him and Avatar, not only was it proven 3D is an alphanumeric acronym for "Show me the money!" but it also brought along the idea 3D wasn't simply a tool for less-imaginative helmers. And by the way, I think Cameron realizes this.
Would Martin Scorsese have ever said, "Why couldn't a film like Precious be in 3D? It should be," if it wasn't for Avatar? Scorsese's statement was made in early March 2010, right around the...

"My name is Justin. This is how I drum."
Thus begins the trailer for "Never Say Never," Justin Bieber's 3-D concert documentary. That first clip isn't the only footage of the 16-year-old pop star back in his formative years. From vintage looks at Biebs tickling the ivories to grainy video of him strumming the guitar on some steps, the trailer tells the unlikely story of how a small-town Canadian kid beat the odds to become an international superstar.
It's an interesting narrative technique, one with both points of convergence to, and deviation from, previous concert doc trailers. As we gear up for the film's Valentine's Day release, it's time to size up the "Never Say Never" trailer in the context of what's come before it.

The big news in cinemas over the last couple of years has been the return of 3D, but it's Imax that's now coming into its own and really transforming the movie-going experience
The future of cinema is here. It's been around for years but, as studios now struggle to find a way to offer audiences a spectacle that can't be replicated by downloads or illegal streams, it's currently enjoying a quiet renaissance. It has revolutionised the way we consume movies, and an increasing number of well-respected film-makers are seeking it out as a creative outlet. 3D? Don't be daft – 3D is the medium of cut-price dance films; the medium of Piranha and Yogi Bear and that terrible Clash of the Titans remake. No, I'm talking about Imax.
More than anything – more than 3D, more than digital projection, more than crazy schemes where you have to pay 30 quid to see a...

Despite online reports to the contrary, Taylor Swift is not set to replace Lindsay Lohan in the romantic comedy "One Night With You," the singer/actress' rep told MTV News.
Swift, who has appeared in movies like "Hannah Montana: The Movie," "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" and "Valentine's Day," was rumored to take over the female lead in the flick about a starlet who joins a reality dating show in an attempt to save her career. But, as in most romantic comedies, things don't go as planned when instead she falls for a bartender who happens to hate all things Hollywood. A love/hate relationship ensues between the two.
When contacted by MTV News, a rep for Swift said nothing is planned as of now.

Next year, Justin Bieber fans will have the chance to see the singer's story retold on the big screen in a 3-D movie currently in the works. But Bieber won't be the first teen pop star to land in theaters in multiple dimensions.
He joins the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, both of whom have already had their live performances delivered to fans in 3-D. And while a director still needs to be chosen for the flick, the JoBros had some advice for Bieber as he prepares to shoot.

Uh-oh, Justin Bieber fans. The teen heartthrob's 3-D concert-movie extravaganza has hit a roadblock: Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim has reportedly dropped out.
According to Deadline.com, the "Inconvenient Truth" director withdrew from the Paramount Pictures project Tuesday night to concentrate on promoting Sundance darling "Waiting for Superman." Paramount is said to already be interviewing directors to take over the project.
Joining the ear-splitting, teen concert-film ranks — which includes "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert" and "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" — Bieber will play himself in what is described as a "feature biopic." Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, and Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid will produce, and a release date is currently set for February 11, 2011 — Valentine's Day weekend.

Will.I.Am says the Avatar director will be displaying Fergie's 'lovely lady lumps' in the third dimension for a new tour movie
Following his blockbuster film about tall blue aliens, James Cameron's next movie has an even more ridiculous subject matter: the Black Eyed Peas. The Avatar director is to make a 3-D documentary about the band, according to Will.I.Am.
"We have the biggest director, because we are the biggest group on the planet," Will.I.Am told Vibe magazine, with typical modesty. The project doesn't seem like it will take much science-fiction "world-building" – it's a concert movie, "based around [the Peas'] tour activities". As if to assuage fears that one gigantic arena gig looks just like any other, the group's frontman also promises the film will have a "dope" story.
"We've toured from America and Europe, to the Middle East, South America, Asia and Africa," he said.

Sandra Bullock was shamed as Worst Actress at the 2010 Golden Raspberry Awards on Saturday, March 6 - just a day before she's tipped to pick up an Oscar. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen has been named the Worst Picture of 2009 in this year's Razzies - the 30th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards - held last night in Hollywood in its traditional spot just before the Oscars.
The much-derided robot action adventure was up against G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Land of the Lost, Old Dogs and All About Steve, and took a total of three awards in the night of shame.
Sandra Bullock is pictured above at the ceremony after turning up to receive the Worst Actress gong for her role in All About Steve, which also earned her Worst Screen Couple along with the film's co-star Bradley Cooper.
Bullock vied for her dishonourable win with Beyonce (Obsessed), Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie), Megan Fox (Jennifer's Body and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Did You Hear About the Morgans?).

Bullock Leads Razzie Awards

Sandra Bullock was shamed as Worst Actress at the 2010 Golden Raspberry Awards on Saturday - just a day before she's tipped to pick up an Oscar.
Bullock picked up the spoof movie trophy for her part in All About Steve, which she also co-produced, even though she is one of the favourites to win an Academy Award at Sunday night's Oscars ceremony for her role in The Blind Side.
The Miss Congeniality actress received a standing ovation as she took the stage to pick up her Razzie - the first Worst Actress recipient to attend the show since Halle Berry was shamed for her role in Catwoman in 2005.
Armed with a box of DVDs of the film, Bullock told the crowd they all need to watch her performance again because she's not convinced she deserves the dishonour.
She told the audience, "Something tells me you all didn't watch the film because I wouldn't be here if you really, really watched it and understood what I was trying to say. Everyone gets a copy and this is the deal I'm going to make. I will show up next year if you promise to watch the movie and really consider if it was truly the worst performance. If you're willing to watch, I'll come back next year and give back the Razzie."
Bullock also landed another flop trophy for Worst Screen Couple with her All About Steve co-star Bradley Cooper.
Other big losers at the event include Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which was panned as the Worst Picture of 2009, and received dishonours for Worst Director for Michael Bay and Worst Screenplay for Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
Sienna Miller received the Worst Supporting Actress Razzie for G.I. Joe and Billy Ray Cyrus picked up Worst Supporting Actor for his part in his daughter Miley Cyrus' big screen outing Hannah Montana: The Movie. The Jonas Brothers were jointly named Worst Actor for Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.
Razzie bosses also marked the end of the decade by picking the worst movie offerings of the last 10 years - John Travolta's Battlefield Earth was labelled the Worst Picture and Paris Hilton was named and shamed as the Worst Actress, while Eddie Murphy was named Worst Actor.

On the eve of her expected Academy Awards triumph, Sandra Bullock won the 2009 Worst Actress Razzie for "All About Steve," while "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" received the Worst Picture award. If Bullock takes Best Actress for "The Blind Side," she will be the first person ever to win an Oscar and a Razzie over the same weekend. "She's in the unprecedented position, Saturday she's the worst, and the very next night, she's back on her feet, and she's the best," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "We certainly don't wish her ill at that other awards show." The "Transformers" sequel won two other Razzies, Worst Director for Michael Bay and Worst Screenplay for Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Bay and his team probably will not lose any asleep over it since "Transformers 2" took in $402.1 million domestically to become the second higest grossing film of 2009, coming in only behind "Avatar.
