Per Capcom’s press release, not only has the 2023 remake eclipsed the 10 million units sold across PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series, but it has become the fastest title in the series to do so.
“Resident Evil 4 is a remake of the lauded original 2005 title. The anime adaptation of the video game Devil May Cry made a notable debut on Netflix as it conjured up 5.3 million views in its first week of streaming on the app. The adult-themed animated series hit No. 4 and made the Top 10 in 87 countries. The show’s release even had a profound effect on its source material as it boosted sales of the Devil May Cry video game series on Steam. The series was also well-received by critics, with an aggregate of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, Netflix is announcing that the anime is being renewed for a second season. The official logline reads, “From Capcom, led by Adi Shankar, and animated by Studio Mir comes Devil May Cry – a Netflix animated series based on the hit video game IP. Premiering April 2025.” And the synopsis from Netflix says, “In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar,...

Netflix's Devil May Cry anime is out now, bringing the stylish devil hunter Dante to life in a whole new way on the small screen. Created by Adi Shankar, Devil May Cry is based on the iconic action video game series by Capcom, where players assume the role of a red leather trenchcoat-wearing devil hunter who slices and dices the forces of hell, typically while shooting off absurd one liners. The games have been around since 2001 and have amassed a passionate following.
The new anime is an interesting take on the Devil May Cry universe, focusing on a younger version of Dante than we meet in any of the games, even the 2005 prequel Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. In this version, we're introduced to Dante before he's aware that he's the half-demon son of Sparda, a legendary demon knight who turned on his own kind to protect humanity.

As the Resident Evil franchise steadily marches towards its 30th anniversary, enough time has passed that a whole generation of fans now consider the series’ divisive film adaptations to be just as integral to the IP’s identity as the games that they’re supposedly based on.
And with Zach Cregger’s upcoming cinematic reboot promising to take the franchise back to its horrific roots, we thought that it might be fun to look back on the adaptations of yesteryear and rank every entry in this long-running series. After all, with seven live action films and an eight-episode TV show, I’d argue that there’s a Resident Evil adaptation for every kind of fan.

Initial Episodes of ‘TerrorBytes’ Docuseries Are Well-Crafted Love Letters to Horror Gaming [Review]

“For a period, it really seemed like survival horror had died. But like the zombies that plague its hallways, it always gets back up. You cannot kill survival horror.”
So posits Doctoral Researcher, Kaytlin Blackmore, in TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming’s debut episode. It’s a rhapsodic reflection on how the genre in question has managed to endure across the generations, in the face of ever-shifting consumer tastes, adversarial cultural forces, and unfavourable regime changes on the publishing front. More importantly, though, it’s just a fundamentally warm and fuzzy sentiment that resonates throughout the entirety of this community-backed docuseries.
Constructed in a way that recalls the reverent originals that you often find while browsing Shudder (i.e. Horror’s Greatest or The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time), TerrorBytes is first & foremost an admiring look at survival horror over the ages. So rather than scrutinising the...

Dino Crisisfans have waited patiently for Capcom to return to the cult-classic survival-horror franchise and it finally seems like that the developer is ready to unleash the beasts. Following the remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, players have been hopeful that Capcom will eventually give Dino Crisis the same treatment. Given how the franchises share a great deal of DNA, it stands to reason that giving Regina and her scaly enemies an upgrade wouldn't be too far out of the question.
Per Gematsu on X (formerly Twitter), Capcom filed a trademark for Dino Crisis on March 4 in Japan, suggesting that the studio is planning on returning to the series in some form. Aside from the trademark's existence, nothing else is known about the potential project but this news does come after Dino Crisis was voted, in an official Capcom poll, as the series fans...

Resident Evilstar Milla Jovovich recently reflected on how she landed her iconic role as Alice in the first feature film adaptation of the fan-favorite survival horror video game franchise. A self-professed fan, the actor, whose career was on an upward trajectory at the time, originally wanted to produce the 2002 movie.
However, Jovovich was asked to read for the role of Alice by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson, who she went on to marry. "I played the video game a lot with my little brother, and I wanted to produce it. I wanted to make the movie," Jovovich told GQ about a role that turned her into an action movie icon. "And then I found out that my - well, he wasn't my husband then - but this guy had the rights to it."

Sony will release Columbia Pictures’ “Resident Evil” domestically on Sept. 18, 2026.
Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, Zach Cregger has written the script and will direct. Shay Hatten is co-writing.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.
Cregger’s credits as a writer-director include “Miss March,” “The Civil War on Drugs” (both alongside Trevor Moore) and, most recently, “Barbarian.” He also produced the 2025 film “Companion” and is next writing, directing and producing the Josh Brolin- and Julia Garner-led horror film “Weapons” for Warner Bros., out January 2026.
“Cregger’s instinct for suspense is so effective, it’s hard to believe that before ‘Barbarian,’ the helmer worked largely in comedy (he was a member of the Whitest Kids U’Know sketch team). Then again, a deliciously twisted sense of humor runs beneath the surface,...

'Really, Really Saved Me': Christina Ricci Says Hollywood Rescued Her From 'Not Very Nice' Childhood

Acclaimed actor Christina Ricci is now among the many stars immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following a decorated film and TV career. Not only has acting given the Yellowjackets star success and fame, but she credits the industry for saving her from a tumultuous childhood.
Speaking with Variety about her Walk of Fame induction, which she called a "profoundly meaningful" moment in her decades-long career, Ricci opened up about her love for acting and what it did for her professionally and personally. Ricci admitted that becoming a film star gave her renewed purpose after a "not very nice" childhood with a family she didn't feel safe around. Having landed key roles in Mermaids, Casper and The Addams Family as a young actor, she showed she could handle the spotlight from an early age. However, she had to overcome the toxicity of home life to deliver on-screen.

There was a brief moment — right around the release of “Resident Evil: Retribution,” and the discourse about “vulgar auteurism” that peaked along with it — when it seemed as though Paul W.S. Anderson had found a way to weaponize the nü-metal nothingness of his blockbuster slop into a strange kind of somethingness that nobody else could make. If the first three movies in the survival-horror franchise had systematically drained Capcom’s source material of everything that made the “Resident Evil” video games scary, fun, or at all interesting for any other reason, the fourth one made it seem as though Anderson had tunneled a hole straight through the bottom of the lowest common denominator until he burst through the top of a different artistic stratum altogether; one less concerned with plot or purpose than with the orgiastic fervor of creating recursive spectacle at the end of history.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, what else can anyone say about the mighty PlayStation 2 at 25? The best-selling console ever, Sony’s follow-up to the original PlayStation defined a console generation, gave the DVD format a huge boost, and gave us countless hits, both horror and otherwise. And we all know the big-name horror titles on the console. Heck, we’ve talked about them multiple times over the years.
But what about the games that don’t get the recognition? The proverbial “hidden gems”, if you will. There are plenty of them, seeing as the console saw over 4,000 titles (you read that right) across its 13-year life. So rather than focus on the obvious ones, here’s small list of titles you should check out if you’re a fan of the Sony’s monolith.

Humanity has been sharing stories about horrific monsters since time immemorial, and some of these tales have become so ingrained in culture that they end up outlasting the societies that created them. That’s why we still see movies based on mythic figures like Hercules and the Minotaur over two thousand years after the end of the Hellenistic period.
And with even Christopher Nolan borrowing from Greek Mythology in his upcoming Odyssey adaptation, we’ve decided to compile a list celebrating six of the scariest depictions of ancient Greek monsters in film. After all, an epic quest is only as thrilling as the strange beasts that our heroes encounter along the way.
In an effort to keep things varied, we’ll only be including one entry per monster. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own mythic favorites if you think we missed a particularly spooky example.

While I eventually came around to it, Resident Evil 4 felt like a turning point in the series that took it down a path I wasn’t really interested in. It moved into something more action-oriented, taking me away from the classic drama of “Umbrella Academy” zombies with gameplay that focuses more on thrills than chills.
To me, the end of the era that I loved was Resident Evil – Code: Veronica on the Sega Dreamcast. I was a day one Dreamcast guy, so Code Veronica was a no-brainer for me, showing off what a new console generation could do with the zombie franchise that I loved. Even though it ended up being one of my favorites in the series, I haven’t played it since it came out.
Now, 25 years later, I fired it up again for its quarter century anniversary to see how it holds up against the rest of the series.

Nominees for the 25th annual Game Developers Choice Awards (Gdca) have been announced, and sadly, much like The Game Awards last month, horror isn’t as well represented as many would like. Still, the likes of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Pacific Drive and Mouthwashing are up for awards, while many genre titles have been given the “Honourable Mentions” nod.

While some classic horror franchises had a welcome return in the 2020s, there's still one deserving franchise that has not seen a new game in over two decades: Clock Tower. With classic horror games like Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2 reaching new audiences with their modern remakes - and with 23 years having passed since the franchise received a full new mainline game - it's time that Clock Tower is remade for modern platforms and audiences.
Clock Tower (1995) was only released in Japan, though it was soon followed by Clock Tower (1996), known as Clock Tower 2 in Japan. The latter was the first game to be released globally, and followed the story of Scissorman, a horrifying horror figure and antagonist who would reappear in various forms throughout later games. Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within (1998) and Clock Tower 3 (2002) followed separate storylines, but each game promised terrifying scares in a very unique game world.

Resident Evil, the horror action series that first began in 1996, has had an impressive streak of successful games in the past few years. While the series has gone forward with new plotlines and characters ever since Resident Evil 7 introduced players to Ethan and a new moldy plague to battle against, Capcom has simultaneously gone back to its classic games for current-generation remakes. A game that hasn’t received the remake treatment is the very first Resident Evil, which is now long overdue for a modern update. Since Capcom has yet to announce what its next Resident Evil title is, now would be the perfect time for RE1 to receive a remake.
While not all classic games need an update to appeal to modern audiences, Resident Evil 1 definitely deserves it after the massive success of the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes. Technically, Resident Evil 1 has already received a remake by Capcom,...

The first-person shooter genre is by far one of the most popular in all gaming, so it makes perfect sense that there are a plethora of amazing indie titles within it, including the likes of Neon White, Mullet MadJack, and Selaco. These indie Fps games are often better than their Aaa counterparts, offering frantic, over-the-top action with unique gameplay mechanics, and more often than not, plenty of callbacks to iconic boomer shooters like Doom.
Many of the best indie Fps games are also the best Fps games in general, with several of them having been released quite recently. From fast-paced Fps games with destructible environments to spooky supernatural shooters, there are so many great indie Fps games absolutely worth trying out. Of course, picking which one to start with or add to the backlog is tough. Fortunately, in no particular order, these indie Fps games are by far the best of the best.

Video game adaptations are quite popular nowadays, but without a doubt, this trend was normalized by the Resident Evil movie series. The series kicked off with the release of 2002’s Resident Evil and ended with 2017’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The franchise was later rebooted but unfortunately, it was not well-received by the fans.

The Resident Evil movie series is a great example of how video games are butchered when adapted into a different medium. The films were average and yet, managed to become the highest-grossing film series based on a video game at one point. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s use of yellow paint sparked some debate about the validity of this design tactic, but personally, I’m happy the game used it. For context, when players refer to “yellow paint” in the game, they are referring to the bright yellow color used to highlight climbable sections of the game’s terrain. FF7 Rebirth is far from the only game to use this tactic. The 2023 version of Resident Evil 4, for instance, used yellow paint to highlight parts of puzzles or destructible boxes. Some feel that these signposts break immersion or make a game simpler.
I don’t think the “yellow paint” debate is as simple as saying that it’s a bad design element and should never be used, or that it is always appropriate and should be used all the time. In my view, design elements like yellow paint have their place, and I...

The Prison Break cast is full of great actors who brought the show’s complex antiheroes and despicable villains to life, and they all have impressive filmographies outside the series. Prison Break revolves around the bond between two brothers and their plot to break out of jail. Along the way, they're helped out by the prison doctor, their childhood friend and lawyer, and a handful of fellow inmates who also want to break free. The producers of Prison Break found the perfect actor to play each part in the cast.
Traditionally, TV shows set up a main cast with several major characters that the audience can check in on every week. But Prison Break was far from a traditional TV show. Lincoln Burrows and his loyal brother Michael Scofield are the only characters who appear in every episode of Prison Break. Thanks to constant character deaths, the cast is always changing.

Given its success, it’s about time other studios take notice, and the first one that comes to mind is Capcom. While Resident Evil has evolved over the years, it has recently struggled to balance the horror and tension with its focus on fast-paced, modern mechanics. With the Swarm technology, it could bring the dynamic, unpredictable chaos of iconic enemies back.

After the disappointment for horror fans at The Game Awards this year, horror fans got their redemption in short order with The Horror Game Awards 2024. And unlike TGAs, Silent Hill 2 wasn’t shut out. On the contrary, Bloober Team’s remake of Konami’s classic took home Game of the Year honours, along with three other awards.
In addition to Game of the Year, Silent Hill 2 earned awards for Best Performance (Luke Roberts as James Sunderland), Best Soundtrack (Akira Yamaoka) and Best Survival Horror Game. And while Silent Hill 2-related, but technically not, Masahiro Ito won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his career’s work.
Meanwhile, Wrong Organ’s Mouthwashing and The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes The Deep were the other multiple award winners of the show. Mouthwashing took home Best Narrative and the Players’ Choice Award, while Still Wakes The Deep won awards for Technical Achievement and Best Indie Horror.

This article contains brief discussions of graphic violence and sexual assault.
The scariest horror movies rely on graphic violence and an oppressive atmosphere to shock viewers, but some of them have crossed boundaries and ended up getting banned in multiple countries. It often happens that a horror movie takes things a little too far, leaving many a viewer wishing they could unsee the terrors that played out before them. When terrifying movies like The Evil Dead or The Exorcist first came out, they were too much to handle for many viewers, causing some countries to completely remove them from cinemas.
Binge-watching the best spine-chilling horror movies is a favorite pastime all year around. Whether slashers, thrillers, supernatural, or twisted black comedy thrillers like 2023's Saltburn, the horror genre provides an exhilarating combination of anticipation and fear that creates the perfect atmosphere for movie nights filled with shrieks and screams. Sorry We’re Closed quickly immerses players in its multifaceted exploration of love and survival. It begins with Michelle waking up cursed with a third eye by the towering, neon-drenched evil, The Duchess. Michelle’s three-day mission to break free from The Duchess’ curse is about more than just literal survival; it’s also about confronting her shattered relationship history and emotional stagnation.
The curse does more than just open her third eye; it forces her to confront the raw truths of the people (and demons) around her and the messy nature of love in all its manifestations. Her daily life, once defined by regularity and detachment, is now fraught with risk, introspection, and a desperate want for connection.
Sorry We’re Closed is a game about love, whether romantic, platonic, communal, or self-directed. The story masterfully contrasts the celestial idealism of pure, unspoiled love with the demonic need for...

While Warframe doesn’t quite have the horror that most fans are looking for, its precursor in 2008’s Dark Sector definitely has some Resident Evil 4 vibes. And if you’ve never experienced Dark Sector, you can grab it now on Steam for free until November 30th.
Per IGN, as part of the celebration for the upcoming free Warframe: 1999 expansion that’s set to arrive next month, developer Digital Extremes has made Dark Sector free to claim on Steam. The game was originally released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, and was subsequently released on Steam in 2009.
The game is set in the fictional Eastern Bloc country of Lasria, which has seen an epidemic of a mysterious infection called “Technocyte,” which has wreaked havoc among the populace with widespread mutation. Players take on the role of CIA agent Hayden Tenno (voiced by Michael Rosenbaum) on a mission to intercept a rogue agent named Robert Mezner,...

As the gaming industry’s award season for 2024 has started, it would seem that the Silent Hill 2 remake has drawn the short end of the stick. Despite its success, the remake of the classic horror game failed to win any categories at the Golden Joystick Awards.

And fans aren’t happy because what’s even more shocking is its exclusion from the Game of the Year (Goty) nominations at The Game Awards. Fans have not shied away from making accusations. Many argue that the remake deserved recognition not just for its legacy but also for its technical and artistic achievements.

Few games in recent memory have captured the brilliance of the horror genre, like Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2. Not only did this impossible remake masterfully revive a timeless tale of broken people facing their demons, but it has also brought Silent Hill back into mainstream discussion on games.

Yet, for all that the game accomplished, the remake has struggled to match the sales of, well, two other juggernaut remakes in the genre, particularly within Europe. Resident Evil 4 Remake and Dead Space Remake—both masterpieces of their own—have outpaced Konami’s return to Silent Hill. But why is that?

Silent Hill 2 (SH2) Remake fans are fuming after the beloved horror remake was overlooked for the Game of the Year (Goty) category at The Game Awards 2024. Fans had high hopes for the remake of the 2001 classic since it was well-received by both critics and fans.

Despite receiving nominations in other categories, Silent Hill 2’s exclusion from the Goty shortlist is a hit to these hopes. While some think there is an ongoing disregard for the horror genre, most fans are calling out the fact that Elden Ring’s Shadow of The Erdtree, a Dlc, got into the nominations.

Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake will be joining the Resident Evil 4 remake, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 7 on the App Store before the year is out. Originally revealed back in July as “coming soon” to Apple devices, Capcom has now announced Resident Evil 2 will be available on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro models, and every iPad and Mac with the M1 chip or later on December 10.

The latest crop comes courtesy of Andy at Biohazard Declassified (with JJ from Residence of Evil doing the reporting in the video below), who says that the latest batch of leaks was relayed by a playtester who claims to have played an early build of the game sometime in April and September in Japan.
Obviously, with stuff like this, it pays to keep your grain of salt handy. None of this has been officially confirmed (obviously) by Capcom or anyone on the Resident Evil 9 team. Plus, these rumours do venture into spoiler territory. So, here we go.

We’ve already had Resident Evil 4 reimagined as a 2D Run n’ Gun, but how about an isometric shooter “with a sprinkle of body horror” thrown in? That’s what you’re getting with
Nocturnal Interactive’s Scarlet Lake, which just had a demo release on Steam.
Scarlet Lake centres around Ben Murphy, whose missing wife sends him a message to come to the town of Scarlet Lake, a small mining town of about 200 people. Ben suspects that something sinister is going on, particularly when the small town is known by the locals for being under restrictions by the government. Nevertheless, Ben heads out to investigate.
Hearkening back to Origins’ cult action-shooter Crusader series, Scarlet Lake features combat akin to over the shoulder survival horror, but from an isometric perspective, and featuring classic Survival Horror tropes. That means you’ll be dealing with limited inventory space, and have to...

The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. It’s back for round 3. YouTuber Phil Dickens aka AKblackandred and Will Penkeyman of Resident Evil Central have announced the 2024 edition of The Horror Game Awards will take place on Saturday, December 14 at 4pm Et, and will once again stream on The Horror Game Awards YouTube channel.

Winners of their respective category will receive a coveted claw trophy complete with bloody embellishments.
There are 16 categories this year, with five new additions. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is not the first horror game to feature blind enemies that are hypersensitive to the sounds you make. House of Ashes has its gnarly space-vampires that rely on echolocation to get around, The Last of Us has its iconic Clickers — caked in fungi that obscures all but their ears — and The Callisto Protocol has its (not at all iconic) Clicker knockoffs. Meanwhile, if we were to go back as far as Resident Evil 4, we’d find the hulking Garradors; feral gladiators whose eyes have been sewn shut and who will instinctively charge at the slightest of vibrations.
Anyway, the point is that it’s hardly a revolutionary concept. Should we expand the parameters a little to include creatures that enjoy perfect 20/20 vision — but still boast highly attuned hearing nonetheless — then we’d also have to account for the likes of Amnesia: The Bunker...

You don’t have to have ever touched a PlayStation controller to recognize the console’s Nineties-era blocky graphics. Big studios may have been churning out shiny remakes of 20-year-old games like Resident Evil 4 (2023) and, more recently, Silent Hill 2 (2024), but indie gaming has taken a more rustic approach to sentimentality. In 2024, all the best independent horror games are rooted in the original PlayStation’s fibrous, lo-fi textures and long-nosed polygons.

Disco Elysium is a game I love wholeheartedly. From its artistic design to its grim and grounded, yet whack and witty writing. Every moment in that world has gripped me in a way that nothing else has before.
Despite this, – and I’m ashamed to admit it, – I’ve never actually finished the game. But there is something to be said of the kind of magic that, without having the chance to reveal itself, lingers. Like a sweet and longing aftertaste. Like a craving you can’t place.
Disco Elysium is able to masterfully capture the absurdity of complex topics, like addiction, and explore the contrast between the internal and external world. There is a quest where your necktie begs you buy formaldehyde from a random man in a gutter, insisting that this is your endgame, this is everything you’ve ever worked towards.
Disco Elysium is Lightning in a Bottle.
Despite this, – and I’m ashamed to admit it, – I’ve never actually finished the game. But there is something to be said of the kind of magic that, without having the chance to reveal itself, lingers. Like a sweet and longing aftertaste. Like a craving you can’t place.

Dino Crisis will finally be available on the current generation thanks to a new PlayStation 5 release, but as nice as the boost in availability is, it's still not what the game or franchise deserves. Released on the original PlayStation in 1999, Dino Crisis is a survival horror experience set on an island facility that's crawling with deadly dinosaurs. With Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami behind the wheel, Dino Crisis is a peak example of developer Capcom's capacity for intense action experiences where enemies should never be taken lightly and every bullet counts.
While other Capcom classics like Resident Evil have received plenty of attention in recent years, the same can't be said for Dino Crisis. The last new game in the series was Dino Crisis 3, which released in 2003 to mixed reviews. Although the core elements of the series are certainly strong enough for a revival to get things back on track,...

Sony’s strategy in 2024 continues to raise eyebrows, especially after the disastrous release of the Until Dawn remake on the PlayStation 5 and PC. The once-beloved horror title has now become an example of how poorly made remakes and remasters can go wrong with players.

Its weak debut has placed it even below Concord, a game that failed so spectacularly it was removed from digital storefronts within weeks. This situation brings into question the handling of remakes and the overall direction of the company strategy. The company seems to focus heavily on remaking old titles with minimal improvements.

Even at a time when horror games are smarter, more dangerous, and more surreal, Silent Hill 2 still feels like a tower casting an ominous shadow over an entire genre. It’s a shadow that’s only grown deeper with every passing year that Konami has both failed to continue the series and did despicable things to its venerated legacy. Culture at large spent 20 years mining the game’s more iconic elements for parts, from Pyramid Head to those bloodthirsty nurses, and there’s no greater reason for Bloober Team’s remake to exist than to amplify the things that made Silent Hill 2 a masterpiece that aren’t so easily separated from its source.
Then and now, the core premise of the game is almost laughably simple: One day, James Sunderland receives a letter from his wife, Mary, who he lost to a wasting disease three years earlier, telling...
