We all know that .red band. means Nsfw, but take note that the F-bombs in this preview are combined with some partial male nudity and a big fake dong, just in case you thought keeping the volume down would keep you safe... For his first film, director Tom Gormican seemingly wanted to see if he could make a movie with only a miniscule amount more masculine charm than Bob Gosse's I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and judging from the above preview, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, he has done just that. I've spent most of my life avoiding friendships that only boiled down to .bros looking for pussy,. since those guys tend to be the most boring people imaginable. Somehow That Awkward Moment takes its best actor, Michael B. Jordan, and makes him even more boring than co-stars Miles Teller and Zac Effron by having him not talk...

The Social Network: A great movie? Absolutely. My favorite of 2010. But it's basically about white-privileged Ivy League douchebags trying to become filthy-rich douchebags, from Mark Zuckerberg (smug douchebag) to Sean Parker (the Napster douchebag) to the Winkelvoss Twins, who were trying to out douchebag that douchebag Zuckerberg.
The Expendables: I think we can all agree that Steven Seagall and Jean Claude Van Damme movies are douchebag movies, whether enjoyed ironically (hipster douchebag) or straight up (meathead douchebag). The Expendables was just a higher class of douchebag movie with more stars. And if you're ever wondering what the one surefire marker for a douchebag movie is, ask yourself this: Does it feature an Mma star?
The Hangover: It's difficult to really place my finger on why The Hangover is such a douchebag movie, although it probably has a lot to do with Bradley Cooper, who has a certain popped-collar quality about him.

Geoff Stults has grabbed the lead role in ‘The Finder,’ the ‘Bones’ spinoff. According to Deadline Hollywood, Stults will play Walter Sherman, a former member of the military police who has the ability to find anything. The character is based on ‘The Locator’ books by Richard Greener. Michael Clarke Duncan is set to play Stults’ partner. Duncan will play Leo, described as a cowboy philosopher.
Stults played Dan in the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell. He also starred in the ABC television series Happy Town. He was also Eddie Latekka in October Road. I am curious as to why they chose this actor to play the role of Sherman. I don’t know much about him, but I am sure this is a show that will be heavy on the writing. I love the idea of The Finder but I am not sure this is...

Along with an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has announced three more films that have a great chance of falling under his Slasher Films banner. Dig it!
According to Bloody Disgusting "Slash has partnered with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Scout Productions (Transsiberian, Session 9, The Fog of War, Mr. Death) and is in negotiations to acquire three new feature film packages under the shingle that will produce edgy, contemporary horror films.
The first film to be produced under the new moniker will be Nothing To Fear, a horror/thriller revolving around two young sisters and their family, who accidentally discover one of the seven gateways of Hell in a small town in rural Kansas. Several directors are currently circling the project, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana this summer.
Slasher Films is also negotiating to produce Vincenzo Natali's Theorem.

Presumably due to the alleged post-Avatar fame factor of Zoe Saldana, this 2006 movie has just hit selected theaters in the United States. Certainly, there can be no other reason for any distributor (in this case, Freestyle Releasing, who also brought us Dragon Wars, The Collector, and I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell) to invest in what plays like a student film out of Tisch by some spoiled undergrad whose parents unquestioningly paid full tuition just to keep their kid out of their basement. As such, The Heart Specialist appears to be inspired by hospital-based television dramedy, but production values are exceedingly low to the point that this crap would never even make it onto daytime television. While a bare-bones approach isn't unusual for a small-budget labor of love, this movie doesn't even bother with opening titles, so the shift from opening previews to the actual movie is rather...

It has been a decade since Matt Czuchry filmed his first substantial role—on "Dawson's Creek's" sudsy summertime spinoff "Young Americans." But that wide-eyed 20-something might have had a hard time recognizing the actor he is today. "Each job really mirrors where you are in your life," Czuchry says. "['Young Americans'] was one of my first jobs after moving to Los Angeles, and it was incredibly exciting because that was the first time I had about five or six episodes in a row. I was doing something that I loved and getting paid for it at a young age." Less than four years after his multiseason arc as wealthy charmer Logan Huntzberger on "Gilmore Girls," the 33-year-old actor has moved on to something decidedly more grown-up: "The Good Wife." As the young, ambitious lawyer Cary Agos—ousted from the law firm Stern, Lockhart & Gardner and playing a pivotal role in the...

In a screed in the Wall Street Journal on Friday entitled "The Worst Movie Year Ever?," Joe Queenan claims that "2010 very possibly is the worst year in the history of motion pictures." It's the type of tiresomely cranky piece that seems to be reliably run at least once a year by some outlet or another, and I'm not going to bother picking apart Queenan's argument or his evidence, because... well, why bother?

With Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson appearing as B.A. in the A-Team and Randy Couture in The Expendables, Matt looks at other Mma sports stars who have made the jump to films…
Fight!
Mention the sport of Mma (Mixed Martial Arts) and you'll likely be greeted by blank stares. Most people will, however, respond to hearing it referred to as Ufc (the most popular brand, a bit like referring to your generic brand vacuum cleaner as a Hoover or your generic brand fake-torch sex-toy as a Fleshlight) or cage fighting. But then they'll usually tell you that it's terrible and it should be banned. You don't really watch that, do you?
Such is the stigma attached to Mma. If you're reading this site, you can probably relate to this. Ever get told by people with no idea that comics are for kids or that if you like watching Star Trek then...

In a fight for family film faces, Emma Thompson's Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang joined previews of How to Train Your Dragon in knocking off Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland from the top UK box office spot
The family face-off
Easter is still a few days away, but the contest for the seasonal family box office is already well under way. Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang opened on more than 500 screens, knocking off Alice in Wonderland from the top spot in its fourth weekend of play. But it was a close-run thing, Nanny's £2.59m comparing with Alice's £2.50m. Both films might have been stronger had they not faced additional competition on Saturday and Sunday from paid previews of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon.
The Nanny McPhee result compares with an almost-identical opening of £2.60m for the original film in 2005. Given the brand recognition established by the original film,...

Hunger (Criterion) Harrowing true story of imprisoned Ira member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) and his 1981 hunger strike protesting the British government’s refusal to recognize him, and other Ira members as political prisoners. Director Steve McQueen delivers the story with true filmmaking panache, mixing startling imagery that blends both stunning beauty and stomach-churning horror. Fassbender is absolutely brilliant in the lead. Not for the faint-of-heart, but not to be missed or, particularly, ignored. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with McQueen and Fassbender; Short documentary; 1981 episode of BBC series “Panorama” that covers the Ira hunger strike; Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-hd audio on Blu-ray.

The day of lovers is almost upon us. Surprise! For most men, this obviously means it’s time to scramble for a Hallmark card and a cheap, plastic rose from the gas station. Forget it, guys; she won’t be impressed. Your plan will fail and you’ll be in the dog house for a week.

The Razzies traditionally "honor" the very worst that the movies have to offer each year, timed not coincidentally to the day before the Academy Awards celebrate the best films of the year. And every year, you can almost guess which terrible films and actors will be nominated; this year the Michael Bay sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen tied for the lead with Land of the Lost, 2009's most notorious box office bomb. But what, if anything, did the Razzies miss?
Before you haters ask, yes, The Twilight Saga: New Moon earned Robert Pattinson a nod for Worst Supporting Actor in addition to a nomination for Worst Screen Couple of 2009, shared with Kristen Stewart and "Taylor Whatz-His-Fang." (Poor Twilight, such an easy target.) Also up for Razzies are John Travolta for Old Dogs, Eddie Murphy for Imagine That, Megan Fox for the one-two punch of Transformers 2 and Jennifer's Body, and all three Jonas brothers,...

For many people, Tucker Max’s book I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell served as a “do’s and dont’s” when it came to drinking and dating in your mid twenties. The book made the New York Times best seller list in 2006, 2007, and 2008. This past year, a film adaptation of the same name was released, to a mild response from fans.
The film featured Gilmore Girls star Matt Czuchry as Tucker Max, with Jesse Bradford and 7th Heaven’s Geoff Stults along for the ride. It was directed by Niagra, Niagra director Bob Gosse.
With the DVD hitting shelves this week, we felt it was only appropo to bring you come scenes that were just too much to make it into the final cut of the film. Be sure to check them out after the jump, and pick up I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell in stores now.

Whip It: "Whip It is exactly what you think it is. There's no move that isn't telegraphed, no cliché that isn't exploited, no trope that isn't mined, no plot line that isn't predictable. Ellen Page plays Bliss, the nerdy misfit in a podunk Texas town where pageantry is, like, the most important thing ever. She and her friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) bide their time working at a local diner, dreaming of better things. Everything Bliss's parents (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern) want for her, she hates. Everything she wants, they either don't understand or disapprove of. One night she and Pash sneak out and see a live roller derby match. Bliss falls in love with it, tries out, makes the team and becomes one of the Hurl Scouts. She struggles to learn the ropes, competes against their rivals, meets a boy, clashes with her parents, saves the day a few times,...

From Jigsaw to Jacko, this week's DVD release are a real mixed bag. Some of the higher profile films hitting a digital format today include Drew Barrymore's Whip It, the Bruce Willis sci-fi action film Surrogates, Saw VI, the poorly received comedy I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and Michael Jackson's This Is It. Digging a bit deeper, we also have the indie drama Little Ashes, which stars Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali, Jennifer Baichwal's metaphysical documentary Act of God, and the direct-to-dvd Thomas Jane noir-thriller Give 'Em Hell Malone. All this plus the U.S. release of Pontypool and Parker Lewis Can't Lose: Season 2! What movies will be in your queue this week? Whip It
Drew Barrymore directs Ellen Page in a coming-of-age tale set in the rough and tumble world of roller derby. As you might expect for the directorial debut of an actor, nearly eveyone in the cast gets their own moment to shine, which drags down the pacing, but overall this is bright and lively entertainment. Page is terrific as a young woman seeking to break out from a small town, but not certain she wants to leave everyone behind. Rent it.

Michael Jackson: This is It
Jackson's tragic death converted behind-the-scenes footage into a must-see documentary for millions of his fans as well as the merely curious. "A strange, confusing look into Michael Jackson's world, or at least the version of it that his friends, family, and/or estate wanted us to see," wrote Cinematical's Jenni Miller. Jackson fanatics: Buy it.

This week on The Flickcast, Matt and Chris fly solo as they take on Sunday’s Golden Globes. Some surprises, some reliefs, and Matt talks Christina Hendricks while Chris talks Mo’Nique. They also discuss some other stories making waves including Apple’s announcement next week, and what that could mean for users of the iPhone, as well as Marc Webb getting to take on the reboot of Spider-Man.
Since it was just the two of them this week, Chris and Matt both got cocky and opted for two picks. Matt went with The Adventures of Power, an indie comedy starring Ari Gold (not Jeremy Piven) and the silver screen adaptation of Tucker Max’s I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, which hits DVD on January 26th. Chris also had two picks, as he went with Paul Thoman Anderson’s Magnolia on Blu-ray, which we’ll have a review of next week,...

The genre of “romantic comedy” can be a damning one — too many films struggle to find a balance in their script between romance and comedy, as it’s a difficult line to straddle. Even if that balance is achieved, it can be undermined by incongruous casting, leading men and women who lack chemistry. Like real-life relationships, the tiniest little crack in the hull can sink the entire ship.
Leap Year, the new film from Shopgirl director Anand Tucker, finds its weakness in the comedy portion of its genre. Had the film been played without laughs, strictly as a romance and an exploration of a foreign setting and culture, this would probably have been a winner. Instead, it feels the burden of romantic comedy trappings and succumbs to a plot progression that is as old as the genre itself.
Of course, it’s a tried and true formula, which means it...

As with any year in Hollywood, there were a lot more bad movies than there were good. If there was one particularly unusual trend in seriously awful movies this year, however, it was not only in how well they did at the box office, but level of cultural impact several of these movies had in 2009. It's one thing to be an awful movie that falls on its ass at the box office and vanishes from our collective consciousnesses -- see My Life in Ruins, Battle for Tera, The Collector, Whiteout, New in Town, Dance Flick, or The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard -- but the Golden Pajibas are more interested in heinous cinematic butt nuggets (or anal bon mots) that not only made an impact at the box office, but commanded a lot of attention. These are bad movies that blew up in our faces and took big bloody hunks...

If you woke up this morning thinking, “Wow, I wonder what that some other guy has to say about my favorite movies of 2009,” this list may or may not solve your problem. If you were also thinking, “Haha, what loser actually saw Ghosts of Girlfriends Past?” I have your answer.
Let It Be Known, All:
As of 1/01/10, I have not seen “important” movies like The Lovely Bones, The White Ribbon, The Messenger, Broken Embraces, It’s Complicated, and Dance Flick.

Overall, the last twelve months have featured some very good movies, but boy you couldn't ignore the fact there were some major stinkers along the way. Of course, coming up with a list would be subjective for any critic, but the staff at HitFix had no problem determining 10 prime candidates. And here's a hint, for various reasons the list doesn't include "Gamer," "All About Steve," "Miss March," "Crank: High Voltage," "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," "Post Grad," "Halloween 2" "Pandorum," "Did You Hear About The Morgans?" or "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" (although from all...

You might have thought that Tucker Max might have taken a hint from the fact that his toddler’s temper tantrum of a flick, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, was rejected not only by critics but by audiences: it has earned only $1.4 million and never managed to muster a wider release than 266 theaters. But in a new interview with AskMen.com, Max remains adamantly clueless as to the reasons why his movie flopped: The movie couldn’t have been marketed a whole lot worse. I mean, no one saw more reaction than me, and no one knows better than me what people think of the movie. I would’ve known long before it came out if it sucked, I would’ve known if people didn’t respond well to it, and that’s just not what happened, which makes the marketing all the more annoying. Because if it had sucked,...

Instead of a boring review from one of our crack reviewers, we decided to have Two crack reviewers do a boring review for Couples Retreat. It’s like you won the lottery but you got only got two movie nerds talking about a romantic comedy instead millions of dollars.
Your humble site chief, Erik (that’s me) is in regular font while Phillip Barrett, our DVD & Blu-Ray Editor is italicized.
It’s easy to pick on romantic comedies. They usually follow a fairly easy paint-by-numbers principle that involves personal worlds falling apart before they can be put back together again with pixie dust and a kiss. Usually everyone goes home happy and the story is wrapped up in a pretty bow. That’s what audiences will also find in the Peter Billingsley directed, Vince Vaughn co-written comedy Couples Retreat, to which I say, “So what?”

In 2001, Richard Kelly’s film Donnie Darko catapulted into the cinematic consciousness and quickly became a cult phenomenon. The film, with its challenging narrative structure, acted as a touchstone for many viewers, especially those of a younger demographic. His follow-up, Southland Tales, while met by a lukewarm reception critically and at the box office, was an equally interesting and compelling vision.
In 2006, Kelly (along with producers Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm), founded a production company called Darko Entertainment, whose mission statement reads that its “goal is to support filmmakers with a unique voice while establishing Darko’s brand to help independent films reach a wider audience.” In the coming year, Darko Entertainment has plans to live up to that with a host of films including Bobcat Goldthwait’s recently released dark comedy World’S Greatest Dad; the comedic actioner Rogue’S Gallery starring Ving Rhames and Ellen Barkin; Fade, based...

Walking dead enlivened the weekend boxoffice.
Sony's Woody Harrelson starrer "Zombieland" topped the domestic rankings with an estimated $25 million. The studio also grabbed second place during the frame as its leggy 3D animated feature "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" dished up another $16.7 million for a 17-day cume of $82.4 million.
Three other wide openers posted relatively modest tallies:
-- Released as a double feature, Disney's 3D versions of "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" opened with $12.5 million in third place.
-- Warner Bros. unspooled its Ricky Gervais starrer "The Invention of Lying" with $7.4 million in fourth.
-- Fox bowed the Drew Barrymore-helmed roller derby pic "Whip It" with $4.9 million in sixth.
Among notable holdovers, Disney's Bruce Willis starrer "Surrogates" fell 51% from its first weekend to register $7.3 million in fifth place with a $26.4 million cume, and MGM/Lakeshore's remake of the musical "Fame" slid 53% in its sophomore session to $4.8 million...

Anand and directed By Edward G. Norris, is an anthology of four tales involving four souls trapped in Purgatory. Newly deceased, they have been gathered there to relive their greatest sin - shown to them by an unearthly guide - which they have failed to repent, hoping to be cleansed of this sin so that they may enter Heaven. Currently in pre-production and slated to shoot in late fall, Go Straight to Hell also stars Traci Lords, Amanda Plummer, Courtney Gains, Karen Black and James DeBello. People give Jenna Jameson a lot of credit for her success, but Traci Lords has never quit working. She was recently in Tucker Max's I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell,...

After dominating last weekend, Sony Picture Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs repeated its box office win over three newcomers as audiences went back for seconds. Surrogates, Fame, and Pandorum all fell to the falling food flick.
The animated family film made another $24.6 million, only a 19% drop from week to week for a total so far of $60 million. It capitalized on 3-D premiums, positive word of mouth (a very impressive 85% critic score on RottenTomatoes), and the lack of kiddie fare among a dull September slate. No one expected it to hold on like it did though.
Experts picked Bruce Willis’ Surrogates to lead, but either people were creeped out by seeing him with hair or no one bought into the sexy android marketing campaign. The PG-13 sci-fi thriller made only $15 million, well below expectations for an $80 million movie.
In third was the remake of Fame, which didn’t...

There’s been a nagging trend in comedies since, oh around the time Kevin Smith and Clerks came onto the scene. For good measure, let’s also throw in the Farrelly Brothers and their cultclassic Dumb & Dumber. Maybe not those specific films, but somehwere around that time or a couple years earlier, comedies decided they needed the over-confident idiot character who would always get his chums into trouble. He’s accompanied by stubborn jackass, who doesn’t want to be there as well as bumbling idiot do-gooder, who usually has something hanging in the balance. Either of these characters can be annoying as all sin, just so long as one of them is. The laughs in these films usually consist of pure out shock toilet humor, involving a character doing something completely outrageous and out of the ordinary. Tucker Max seems to have lived some pretty outrageous times in his life,...

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs only fell an estimated 18.8 percent, the 26th smallest drop of all time (of films that opened in at least 3000 theaters). Alert commenters Jm and Nick both had Meatballs winning, but even they didn't have it cracking $20m. However, commenter Steve probably was most apt with his "Good weekend to get caught up on videos" take. It was the third worst weekend of the year, and the miserable financial September continues. Moviegoers came back for a second helping of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but the new items on the menu, Surrogates and Fame, didn't fly. That led to a weekend that was off seven percent from the same timeframe last year when Eagle Eye landed. Standing as the only broadly appealing movie among recent releases, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dissipated by a mere 19 percent, generating an estimated $24.6 million and lifting its total to a solid $60 million in ten days. Its drop was less than such comparable titles as Open Season, Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little, though it may have a steeper decline in its third weekend, when the Toy Story double feature will claim much of its 3D attention. Surrogates plugged in with an estimated $15 million on approximately 3,600 screens at 2,951 sites, or a fraction of what the similar I, Robot started at. The science fiction thriller...

So much for all the new releases this weekend. It was once again Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs which dominated the weekend box office, with all the new releases Surrogates, Fame, Pandorum and all the rest coming up well short. In fact, it wasn't even a very close race in the end, with Meatballs running away with it on Saturday and Sunday after a close Friday. Their repeat first-place finish with $24.6 million was only a small drop from their $30 million opening last week, which was the third best September opening of all time behind Sweet Home Alabama and Rush Hour (Which goes to show you what a dead month September usually is at the box office, folks.) Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" proved to be a popular leftover item during the weekend, as the 3D animated feature repeated atop the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $24.6 million.
"Meatballs" dropped just 19% from its first weekend tally to dish up $60 million in cumulative boxoffice through its first 10 days in theaters. The pic's tasty second-frame hold was particularly notable in light of the session's generally bland boxoffice.
Three new wide releases met with less savory results on the frame.
Disney's sci-fi thriller "Surrogates," starring Bruce Willis, bowed on the lower end of prerelease expectations with $15 million in second place, while MGM's female-targeting musical Fame" was third with a limp $10 million debut. Warner Bros.' Matt Damon starrer "The Informant!" was the strongest of three other soph-session holdovers, dipping just 34% to $6.9 million in fourth place for a $21 million cume.

Almost a month ago I had the opportunity of participating in a roundtable interview with writer Tucker Max and the film’s co-writer Nils Parker to discuss I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Tucker Max if of course the man behind the bestselling book, a popular blog, and he also had a hand in the script. With that said, you’re probably already aware of his work. Here’s what Tucker and Nils had to say about their recently released film.
Considering you guys are doing this tour it seems as if you’re going for word-of-mouth as a big marketing push, is that the main intent of this tour?
Tucker Max: Well, the way I see it is that there’s no stronger or better marketing tool than word-of-mouth. We feel like we’ve made a great movie and all we have to do is get it...
