From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

Biopics about musicians are now seemingly hit or miss, as during the last few years we both had well-received Rami Malek’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Austin Butler’s Elvis, and panned Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Bob Marley: One Love.
Many filmmakers were trying to get the rights to depict the life of another singer, whose life is really reminiscent of a dark movie without even turning it into a script, Amy Winehouse. Before she died in 2011 from alcohol poisoning, the soul queen led a really challenging career that became a source of not only gossip, but also much inspiration.
In 2018 it was finally announced the first biographical movie about Winehouse’s path would be made. Later it was handed over to Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is no stranger to biopics, as she directed the acclaimed John Lennon movie, Nowhere Boy (2009).

Plot: The life of singer Amy Winehouse (Marisa Abela), including her troubled relationship with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell) and father (Eddie Marsan) and her struggles with addiction.
Review: When making a biopic about a famously troubled yet brilliant artist, there’s a fine line to walk when it comes to juggling the story of their art with the depiction of their addictions. Movies like Rocket Man or Walk the Line did it well, but they told ultimately triumphant stories about people overcoming those addictions. When the person succumbs, it can be dicier. I remember the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, tried to do both but spent way too much time with its star miming along to Houston songs. Bohemian Rhapsody turned Freddie Mercury’s life into a PG-13 cartoon.

In the coming months, British actors’ union Equity and producer trade body Pact are expected to kick off negotiations to thrash out new contracts that will cover the vast majority of U.K. TV and indie film. There’s going to be several major sticking points on the table, many that are near-identical to those that dominated the lengthy and fraught talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP in the U.S. last year, not least secondary payments and the hot-button topic of AI.
But while these may be the headline grabbers up for discussion, a group of actors have been campaigning for another issue to be part of the negotiations: hair and makeup equality.
In her 2023 documentary “Untold Stories: Hair on Set,” British actress and filmmaker Fola Evans-Akingbola brought to light how Afro hair had been shockingly overlooked by the U.K. industry in terms of on-set provisions and knowledge.

Titans of the faith-based filmmaking industrial complex they helped to create, Kingdom Story Company founders Andrew and Jon Erwin built their brand on the Christian rock biopics “I Still Believe” and “I Can Only Imagine,” ultra-benign stories of faith, loss, and profit that rely on powerful songwriting to compensate for sermon-like storytelling, and frame their subject’s artistic success as both a testament to their faith and a megaphone for the word of Jesus Christ. Absent the rigor or artistry of secular comps like “Love & Mercy” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (but also absent the Wikipedia-driven ghoulishness of more recent examples like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), these movies are happy to function as feature-length commercials for the musicians they were made to honor, just as they’re happy to offer halos to the people who inspired them.

In what will surely come as a huge shock to the general public and cause no small number of monocles to pop out, Amazon MGM Studios has elected to retitle Zoë Kravitz's feature directing debut, which was previously going under the not-at-all provocative moniker "Pussy Island." Kravitz's film will instead be released as "Blink Twice," which for me conjures memories of David Tennant's 10th Doctor desperately warning Carey Mulligan not to blink around the Weeping Angels in the classic modern "Doctor Who" episode "Blink."
That association isn't entirely inappropriate, either. "Blink Twice," like "Blink," is a potpourri of horror, mystery-thriller, and humor with an English actor at its core. In this case, it's Naomi Ackie of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and "Master of None" season 3 fame starring as a young woman who accompanies a tech billionaire -- played by Kravitz's current real-life significant other,...

A few months ago, Amazon MGM announced that they will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they also changed the title, dropping the Pussy and renaming the film Blink Twice. With the release date now exactly four months away, a trailer for Blink Twice has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz, who played Catwoman in The Batman, the film will follow Frida, a young, clever, Los Angeles cocktail waitress who has her eyes set on the prize: philanthropist and tech mogul Slater King. In the end, the two singers who were eliminated were Jordan Anthony and Nya.
Throughout the competition, Jordan sang tunes like “Forget Me” (Auditions round), “Love in the Dark” (Showstopper round), “Titanium” (Top 24 round), “when the party’s over”, “Attention” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Top 14 round). After a premiere at the SXSW Film Festival last month, Ned Benson’s romantic drama The Greatest Hits is making its way to streaming on Hulu. There’s a trap inherent to making a musical biopic. On the one hand, there’s something undeniably thrilling and crowd-pleasing about seeing a cultural icon like Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston, or Elvis Presley come alive on the screen. On the other hand, when audiences buy a ticket to see a movie about a famous musician, they expect to hear their songs. More importantly, they expect to hear their voices.
Music history is filled with artists whose vocal qualities have become iconic in their own right, immediately distinctive and filled with incredible personality. Think of Mercury’s bombastic, four-octave vocal range that very few people on the planet are capable of replicating. Or Houston’s soulful, gospel-inspired technique, or Presley’s often-parodied stuttering Southern drawl. It’s not only difficult for an actor cast as these artists to live up to their singing — sometimes, it’s quite literally impossible.

Fans regularly make film biopics about famous musicians successful, but they also love to nitpick the results. Or to misquote Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division and the subject of a rather good musical biopic (Control), love will tear apart any work of fan service if it screws up the story, paints the subject in too unflattering a light or, worst of all, mangles the music with impersonations that barely rise above the level of karaoke. (Consider, if you dare, Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin in Beyond the Sea.)
On the other hand, there’s also something irksome about biopics that have actors lip sync to the original songs, like Naomi Ackie did for I Wanna Dance With Somebody or, much less successfully, Dennis Quaid in Great Balls of Fire! Especially if that means access to the original recordings or even rights to the songs in the first...

Amid a very busy week of Oscar events, Sean Penn’s relief organization Core took a moment to shift the focus from toasting this year’s top films to raising money for ongoing crises around the world.
At Core’s Pre-Oscars Benefit on Tuesday — sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Dodge — $1.4 million was raised to finance the group’s humanitarian work, with support from a star-studded group of attendees. Penn, Core CEO Ann Lee and CAA’s Bryan Lourd (who is both Penn’s agent and a Core board member) co-hosted the event, held at a private residence in Laurel Canyon, while Bill Burr served as the night’s emcee.
“This is such a wonderful organization — I’ve done so many benefits in my stand-up career where the charity was B.S., like 10 percent of 10 percent went to something,” Burr told guests at the beginning of the night. “This is actually...

Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”

Sony Music launches legal action over the 2022 film, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody. More on the story here.
Here’s a bit of an odd one. In 2022, Sony Pictures Releasing put into cinemas Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the biopic of the late Whitney Houston. It was, in hindsight, the wrong film at the wrong time, grossing just shy of $60m off its $45m budget, in spite of a powerhouse lead performance by Naomi Ackie. At the time it landed in cinemas, Avatar: The Way Of Water was vacuuming up all the money in the world, and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody never really stood a chance.
Now, the film – again, released by Sony Pictures Releasing – is being sued by, er, Sony Music.
The litigation isn’t Sony suing itself, though. Rather, it’s taken aim at four companies that were involved in the making of the film,...

Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

Paramount received the best Valentine’s Day gift any studio could hope for when Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic about the legendary Jamaican musician, set a new midweek record for the holiday when jamming to $14 million and besting the $11.5 million grossed by The Vow in 2012.
But Valentine’s Day turned out to be only a warm-up act as the film transformed into an all-audience box office sensation in another win for the music biopic boom sweeping Hollywood. Iconic music artists — of which there is no shortage — are providing studios with much-needed IP as tried and true genres, namely superhero movies, lose their singing powers. Barely a week goes by without a new major studio project being announced, including this week’s news that Sony and Sam Mendes are embarking on an ambitious magical mystery tour that will see each of the four Beatles get their own feature film, all...

Sony Music Entertainment sued the producers of the 2022 Whitney Houston biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody this week, claiming the producers have yet to pay for the use of Houston’s music catalog in the film, over a year after the movie first came out.

February 2024 is, in all likelihood, going to be one of the worst months at the box office in quite some time. January was rough with very few new releases to help keep theaters afloat, and now the 2023 holdovers like "Wonka" and "Anyone But You" are running out of steam. With "Argylle" also failing to do big numbers, things have gone from bad to worse. Valentine's Day will see potential help arrive in the form of "Bob Marley: One Love," with the musical biopic seeking to capitalize on not one, but two different holidays as it will also benefit from President's Day that following Monday. So, can this Bob Marley biopic pull an "Elvis" and become a breakthrough hit?
Paramount Pictures is releasing the film mid-week on Wednesday timed to Valentine's Day. It will be opening directly against Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation "Madame Web." On paper, at least, those...

Amazon MGM has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they’re not actually going to be releasing the film under the title Pussy Island. The feature directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz (who played Catwoman in The Batman), the thriller is now going by the title Blink Twice. By giving the film a more public-friendly title, they’ve just saved some members of the public from having to protest the fact that a movie called Pussy Island is showing at their local theatre.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful… but not nearly as frightful as the Holiday box office this year. Generally the week between Christmas and New Years sees some afterglow effect from the big releases as many people take the week off as an end of year vacation. This year, with no Avatar, Spider-Man or Star Wars in theaters, we aren’t really seeing those types of holdover numbers.
Predicting this weeks numbers will be a bit tough as there truly is no single stand out film that will clearly rise above the rest. You may point out that The Color Purple opened on Christmas Day and took in a shocking $18.1 million and a first place finish, but by Tuesday (just one day later) the film had dropped over 61% of its audience with $7 million and a third place finish. To put that into perspective: last year, films like Avatar: The Way of Water,...

It’s funky times at the holiday box office.
At a glance, without a major monolith title in the marketplace and another pic leading with a single-digit take, it looks like a scenario of the tide failing to lift all boats.
On Wednesday, it was Warner Bros.’ Wonka that won the day with $8 million at 4,213 theaters, moving its running cume to $102.5M on its 13th day. For the Wednesday following Christmas in the past two years, respectively, it was Avatar: The Way of Water that led with $20.5M and Spider-Man: No Way Home with $20.3M. Wonka is the 24th movie to cross $100M at the domestic box office in 2023.

In a pretty shocking turn of events the multi nominated stage adaptation The Color Purple had a massive Christmas Day, taking in an estimated $18.1 million (per Deadline) in just one day. To put that into perspective, tracking (and our own predictions) saw the film taking in around $10-$12 million. I saw the writing on the wall for this one when I looked at my local theaters ticket sales on Christmas Day and noticed that The Color Purple had mostly sold out showings throughout the day.
What does this mean going forward? With a tremendous single day take and an A cinemascore alongside a solid 94% audience score and good critical reception (including a 7/10 from our own Chris Bumbray) mixed with some great awards season buzz (the film has already racked up nearly 60 nominations including 5 Critics Choice Award Nominations and 2 Golden Globe nominations), you can expect The Color Purple to have some...

Given the rash of music biopics in recent years — your Bohemian Rhapsody, your Rocketman, your Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody to name just three, it was only a matter of time before Reggae legend Bob Marley joined the list.
Bob Marley: One Love is on the way, directed by a man with some experience bringing real-life stories to the screen: Reinaldo Marcus Green, who last made the Oscar-winning King Richard about the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.
He has Kingsley Ben-Adir playing Marley, with Lashana Lynch as wife Rita and, thanks to close collaboration with the singer's family, full rights to use the Marley musical catalogue.

This article contains spoilers for the Nov. 14 episode of “Dancing With the Stars”
Marvel star Xochitl Gomez earned the season’s first perfect score for an individual dance for a “flawless” Tango, but “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix regained the lead thanks to a nearly perfect Paso Doble and three extra points from last week.
“Pose” star Billy Porter sat in as guest judge for Whitney Houston night, kicking off the show with a live performance of her 1985 hit “How Will I Know.”
Madix and Pasha Pashkov performed a powerful Paso Doble to “Queen of the Night” that earned 10s from every judge but Inaba. Besides the extra points, The reality star was also exempt from this week’s dance-off.
Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy’s Tango to “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” scored 10s from all four judges. Despite spraining her ankle last week, Gomez’s dance was, according to Inaba,...

“I wasn’t surprised. I knew she was going to be someone that was going to be a surprise elimination,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin about the sudden ouster of Lele Pons on “Dancing with the Stars” at the end of “Music Video Night.” “As it has gotten closer towards the end of the competition it just felt that she didn’t have the opportunity to really find her footing and become a top contender. She was starting to gain that momentum, but I felt like it was a little too late.” He discussed that and more with fellow contributor Jeffrey Kare and editor Daniel Montgomery in their week seven slugfest. Updated with latest: The two-year-old lawsuit between Bohemian Rhapsody writer Anthony McCarten and the producers of the Oscar-winning film is over.
On Halloween, lawyers for the two-time Oscar-nominated scribe filed “request for dismissal” paperwork in Los Angeles Superior Court. The document asks that McCarten’s November 2021 profits action against the Graham King-run Gk Films LLC and production company Wagw Inc. over the blockbuster biopic be dismissed “with prejudice.”
This ends for good the lawsuit in which McCarten sought to be paid the 5% of Gk’s profits he says he was promised for writing the Freddie Mercury film. No information on any settlement or other details were made public in the October 31 filing.
As Queen themselves once sang: “Easy come, easy go, little high, little low.”

When the rom-com Prom Pact arrived on Disney platforms in late March, it debuted to positive reviews and the modest level of fanfare one would expect for a TV film aimed at teenagers. But seven months later, it has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.
On Thursday, a clip from the film’s opening pep rally scene circulated on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, unrealistic looking digital humans cheer in the bleachers alongside real background actors. The clip has been widely shared (and widely mocked).
It has also struck a chord amid the SAG-AFTRA strike that has shut down Hollywood and in which one of the key issues is the worry that an actor’s likeness could be re-created digitally without adequate procurement of consent and compensation. Universal looks to be starting something, as they will distribute “Michael” in theaters overseas. The Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic, starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, is set to begin production after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
