As Saturday Night Live celebrates its landmark 50th season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is reflecting on her early years on the show.
The Golden Globe winner recently opened up about the “excruciating” first rehearsal with her SNL co-stars after joining the cast with Season 8 in 1982, becoming the show’s youngest female cast member ever at the time at age 21.
“When I was just getting started, I was part of the Practical Theatre Company in Chicago,” she said on an episode of her Wiser Than Me podcast, produced by Lemonada Media. “The producers of SNL came to see the show and they loved it, and they hired all of us to come to New York and be a part of SNL.”

Seth Meyers on His Early Dreams of Movie Stardom: ‘Sometimes Ambition Led Me Away from My Strengths’
NBC’s late-night talk show programming has been dominated by “Saturday Night Live” veterans for the better part of the 21st century. Jimmy Fallon has found success as the host of “The Tonight Show” since 2014, having previously hosted “Late Night” for five years following Conan O’Brien’s departure from the show. (O’Brien was a long-tenured writer on “SNL.”)
Fallon’s promotion to the 11:35 slot created an opportunity for Seth Meyers to bring his distinct brand of “Weekend Update”-influenced political comedy to “Late Night,” which he has hosted since 2014.
It’s a format that suits Meyers — especially since he transitioned from a traditional standup monologue to delivering jokes from behind a desk. That’s Meyers’ comfort zone; it just took some time to find it.
In a recent appearance on NPR’s “Wild Card with Rachel Martin,” Meyers said that he initially believed his stint on “SNL” would lead him towards movie stardom.

Is “SNL” new tonight? No. NBC’s sketch comedy series is taking a couple of week off, but it will return for Season 50, Episode 5 on Saturday, November 2 with host John Mulaney and musical guest Chappell Roan. The first four episodes of the season were hosted by Jean Smart, Nate Bargatze, Ariana Grande, and Michael Keaton.
The regular cast members for “SNL” Season 50 are Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernandez, James Austin Johnson, Colin Jost, Michael Longfellow, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Devon Walker, and Bowen Yang. The featured players are Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline. Over the summer, Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney, and Chloe Troast all departed the program.

In Seth Meyers’ new HBO special, Dad Man Walking, his opener is a very good poop joke, which he graciously credits to his son Axel, (fittingly) #2 among Meyers’s three children. Meyers gets to his own material shortly after that, though. “I am going to talk a fair amount about having kids tonight,” he warns his audience, “and I appreciate that not everyone here is a parent. We do have a pretty cool consolation prize for you, which is this: at the end of the night, you all get to go back to a home where no fucking kids live.”
It’s a remarkably efficient joke considering that it doubles as a load-bearing bit: Yes, children are a significant focus of his attention, but no, he’s not the kind of dad comic who thinks everything they do is adorable. In other words, fans who seek out Meyers’ stand-up because...

Long before Lorne Michaels decided Shane Gillis was too toxic to join SNL’s cast but the perfect dude to headline his show, NBC had the bright idea to fire Norm Macdonald for crimes against O.J. Simpson before immediately bringing him back as a host.
This week marks the 25th anniversary of Macdonald’s bitterly caustic return to SNL, just months after NBC’s Don Ohlmeyer — coincidentally, a good pal of Simpson’s — gave him the boot. Michaels wouldn’t fire Macdonald himself, either because he was (famously) a conflict avoider, because he disagreed with Ohlmeyer’s decision or both. That left Macdonald to call Ohlmeyer personally to learn whether or not he still had a job. He didn’t, with Ohlmeyer blaming the move on a subpar Update: “It’s just not as funny as it should be.”
The fan backlash was immediate. It didn’t help that Colin Quinn,...

Provided you skip past the episodes where Louis C.K. plays a disquietingly aggressive cop, Parks and Recreation can be a very comforting show — although perhaps not quite to the degree that noted televisual sedative Frasier is. Parks and Rec’s calming effect seems to be the result of its overall chill vibe, lovable characters, and perhaps most importantly, the show’s unrelenting political optimism.
Leslie Knope herself, Amy Poehler, was recently asked by Variety about the possibility of getting more Parks and Rec content this election year, possibly because political optimism isn’t exactly plentiful these days. The idea isn’t all that crazy considering that, five years after the series finale, we got a Zoom reunion in 2020. And it wasn’t just a lazy reading of an old script, like with some other pandemic-era Zoom reunions, it was an in-universe check-in with each character, and genuinely very funny.

As Saturday Night Live marks its 50th anniversary, Seth Meyers is fondly looking back at his onscreen love story.
The Late Night host called Bill Hader‘s long-running ‘Weekend Update’ character Stefon “my one true love” as he listed his top five favorite SNL characters in honor of the NBC sketch comedy show’s milestone season.
He listed the rest of his top five as Will Forte‘s MacGruber, Kate McKinnon‘s Colleen Rafferty, Eddie Murphy‘s Buckwheat and Rachel Dratch‘s Debbie Downer, as he appeared on Watch What Happens Live.
Meyers’ number-one pick should come as no surprise after he married the “city correspondent” in Hader’s 2013 farewell episode, breaking up Stefon’s wedding to Anderson Cooper in an epic sketch filled with all of the character’s bizarre references, including a Ben Affleck cameo.
Following his 2005-’13 run on SNL, Hader has returned to ‘Weekend Update’ as Stefon on a few occasions.

It’s been 16 years since Amy Poehler was a cast member on Saturday Night Live, but that also might be the exact same amount of time that’s passed since the average SNL “fan” actually watched it.
From 2001 to 2008, Poehler carved a place for herself among the comedy greats with her powerful, high-energy performances on SNL, hosting the venerated “Weekend Update” segment and playing celebrities ranging from Hillary Clinton to Michael Jackson. A veteran of the Chicago improvisational comedy scene who co-founded the comedy group The Upright Citizens Brigade that turned into one of the most influential training and performance institutions in entertainment, Poehler had an immense impact on her collaborators at SNL, namely her recurring current partner Tina Fey. During her tenure, Poehler also left an equally strong impression on the SNL fandom, who considers her not only one of the show’s all-time best cast members, but one...

“I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not” was a cute catchphrase to launch Weekend Update on an unsuspecting nation, but it also turned out to be prophetic. While the fake news desk made stars of comedians like Dennis Miller and Norm Macdonald, it has also been anchored by performers who, for lack of a better term, are no Chevy Chase. And so, no one would blame you if you can’t remember a single joke from these five obscure Weekend Update anchors.

Michael O’Donoghue’s second go-around as a writer for Saturday Night Live didn’t go as well as the first. Brought back after Lorne Michaels and the original cast headed out for parts unknown, O’Donoghue, the show’s new head writer, wanted to give it a flaming Viking funeral. In other words, “he wanted to destroy the show,” explained Tim Kazurinsky in the SNL oral history Live From New York.
One reason O’Donoghue believed the show should die, according to Mr. Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O’Donoghue: He thought the cast was horrible. He particularly hated Kazurinsky for his relatively tame, unassuming style (O’Donoghue believed Kazurinsky’s Second City was well past its prime) and deemed most of the cast “losers” and “shit.” There were only two performers O’Donoghue liked — Eddie Murphy, for obvious reasons, and Christine Ebersole.
Ebersole is more of a puzzle.

Norm Macdonald isn’t primarily known for his celebrity impressions, but during his time on Saturday Night Live, he imitated Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds as well as also managed to gift/curse us all with this scarily accurate take on Quentin Tarantino.
But the best Macdonald impression, many would argue, is his David Letterman.
Impressions of Letterman weren’t totally new to SNL. Back in 1983, Joe Piscopo played the host while he was still part of the NBC family. Piscopo’s Letterman was serviceable, but ultimately, uninspired.
Macdonald, on the other hand, was somehow able to tap into the core of Letterman’s comic persona, only slightly amplifying his mannerisms, and ultimately turning the Late Show star into a frenzied sketch comedy character without all that much exaggeration. And shout-out to Mark McKinney for his overly sycophantic Paul Shaffer.

Saturday Night Live referenced the current cultural fascination with the Menendez brothers in a cut-for-time skit intended to air during Weekend Update. “Instead, people keep yelling things like, ‘You’re innocent!’ and ‘You’re so hot!'” Hernandez added.

Marcello Hernández and Michael Longfellow were set to visit “Weekend Update” this week, but their bit was cut for time. However, “SNL” shared an unaired version of the desk segment online where they offer last minute Halloween costume suggestions to anyone who needed them — after explaining how their own costumes didn’t exactly hit right. Introduced as “two guys dressed as doctors,” the pair revealed they were repeatedly mistaken for the Menendez brothers.
“We thought people would see two doctors and start banging pots and pans together for us, like during the pandemic,” Longfellow said. Hernández interjected, “Instead, people keep yelling things like, ‘You’re innocent!’ and ‘You’re so hot.'”
The pair were also asked to “kiss each other,” Longfellow continued, referencing the controversial incest angle of Ryan Murphy’s recent “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

Working for Saturday Night Live doesn’t exactly seem like the best job for someone who deals with severe anxiety. Even aside from the fact that it requires putting on a live show for millions of viewers, there’s also the intense competition, the sleepless writing sessions and Lorne Michaels’ legendary mind games.
But one of SNL’s all-time greats, Bill Hader, has been very candid about the fact that he struggles with anxiety, and even experienced panic attacks during sketches.
Hader once described how he clung to Vanessa Bayer’s arm during an on-air panic attack, and suffered a similar episode while impersonating Julian Assange in a 2010 sketch. According to Hader, he “started shaking” and kept trying to hide his face with a wine glass.

Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update took aim at Donald Trump’s rally earlier in the day in Coachella, California, of all places, as well as his running mate’s awkward, repeated refusal to admit that Trump lost the 2020 election.
“Donald Trump held a rally today at the site of the Coachella Music Festival, because just like Trump, Coachella brings out the worst in white people,” Colin Jost joked, after the audience cheered Trump blatantly threatening to withhold wildfire aid to California–something he did as president.

A chaotic “Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live spoofed an overworked Amazon employee on Prime Day in Ego Nwodim’s Monica and the Gallagher brothers of the rock band Oasis, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman playing the oft-feuding siblings.
First, Nwodim’s frenzied worker tells host Michael Che that her Prime Day experience was great, in the way that Hanukkah is — as in, she “worked eight straight days.”
“I worked so much, I had to make a whole new day of the week — Fluesday, that’s when you close your eyes on Friday and wake up behind the wheel on Tuesday,” Nwodim said, delivered in rapid-fire speech.
When asked by Che if she had a work-life balance, Nwodim assured him that she did, saying, “Once a week, I order an Amazon package to my own address, just so I could drive by my house and wave to my kids.

Nearly a year before their much anticipated Oasis reunion tour, Noel and Liam Gallagher shared the stage for the first time together in year on “Saturday Night Live.” Well, sort of…
James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman took to “Weekend Update” as the long estranged Gallagher brothers, promising host Colin Jost that they won’t break up again before their tour next year.
“Everyone’s wondering, are you guys gonna be cool to tour a year from now?” Jost asked the Gallaghers.
“I’m cool if he’s cool,” Johnson’s Noel responded.
“I’m cool, I’m cool, I’m cooler than you are,” Sherman’s Liam shot back.
Jost wasn’t convinced. “Great. So, that’s a no.”
The Oasis reunion tour is already shaping up to be the biggest concert experience of 2025, with U.S. tour dates recently added and thousands of fans scrambling to nab seats online.

If you were hoping to see Pete Davidson return to SNL as a host this season, you may be out of luck.
Pete first hosted in 2022, and he was slated to return for a second time last season. But that episode was canceled due to the writers’ strike.
Many fans assumed that Davidson would return for SNL‘s historic fiftieth season, which got underway last month.

Now, however, that seems unlikely. The reason?
Well, according to The Sun Pete is in the midst of a nasty feud with his former friend and costar Colin Jost.

“Saturday Night” hit theaters everywhere on Friday, taking fans back to the very beginning of one of NBC’s most famous shows. But, is it a true story?
Directed by Jason Reitman, the film tells the story of the 90 minutes leading up to the very first episode of “Saturday Night Live.” It’s total chaos, with the crew openly revolting against producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle), the content of the show itself still being nailed down, and studio execs simply counting on it to fail.
A lot of the film is rooted in reality, but, like many true stories put on screen, there is some fictionalizing that happens.
Let’s break it down what’s fact and what’s fiction in the “SNL” movie.
Is “Saturday Night” based on a true story?

2024 has been a really huge year for "Saturday Night Live," the sketch comedy institution that operates out of Studio 8 in New York City's famous 30 Rockefeller Center. With the show entering its 50th season during its September premiere -- which brought Emmy-winning "Hacks" star Jean Smart on board as a host -- and a major election this year providing plenty of material week after week, more eyes are on Lorne Michaels' 90-minute late-night show than ever. Not only that, but Jason Reitman's film "Saturday Night," which focuses on the show's humble beginnings and its messy, chaotic 1975 premiere, releases on October 11 (the anniversary of the "Saturday Night Live" series premiere).

Jason Reitman is on a barnstorming tour for Saturday Night, telling everyone about his amazing week in 2008 as an SNL guest writer. Guest writer? How does that work exactly? Do you book a session like an Airbnb? Does Lorne Michaels bring you in like a lecturer in Copenhagen?
Turns out Reitman isn’t alone — the show has had several visiting scribes over the years, including some pretty famous names. Here are five people you likely never knew spent a couple of weeks writing sketches on SNL…

Comedy fans love to complain about the current quality of Saturday Night Live, but Laraine Newman believes two of her former castmates would be fans. “Well, I think they’d be amazed,” she told People. “It’s hard to know whether they would have been excited about the evolution of comedy tone, but I think they would be. Both Gilda and John had a very progressive perspective on the world, as well as comedy.”
While much about the show has changed over the past 50 years, the way SNL is assembled from Monday to Saturday night has remained remarkably consistent. “In format, that hasn’t changed,” Newman explained. “The behind-the-scenes function of pitching to the host, assigning sketches, writing all night and preparing for the live show — that’s all the same.”

On “Weekend Update,” hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost took jabs at some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, like Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis and rapper Diddy.
Che took aim at rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who has been accused of sex trafficking and sexual assault. “It was reported that the U.S. added 245,000 new jobs. Unfortunately, they were all ‘Diddy accuser,’” said Che.
“It was announced that Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs’ sex trafficking case has been assigned to a new judge,” added Che. “[A judge] that Diddy hopes is cool with rapes.” Jost chimed in saying, “It was reported that Diddy once invited Prince Harry and Prince William to one of his parties, but they did not go.”
Jost, poking fun at another member of the royal family’s documented involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, said, “Before Diddy could finish writing the invite, Prince Andrew was there.”
Jost also reported Daniel Day-Lewis’s celebrated return to acting.

Saturday Night Live newcomer Jane Wickline stole Colin Jost’s thunder during this week’s “Weekend Update,” premiering a satirical ditty that explored Gen Z’s attitude toward partying.
After Jost introduced a statistic that detailed how 71% of young people have cut back on going out, Wickline appeared with a keyboard to sing-song the aptly named track “Party,” in which she detailed a night out that isn’t quite what it seems.
“Host couple goes upstairs, they’re getting freaky at the function,” the featured cast member croons, also detailing how the overhead light has come on and the DJ has packed up their belongings.
“I am the plus-one of someone who has left,” Wickline sings in the hook, as Jost considers that the party is actually wrapping up. When he attempts to cut her off, Wickline quips: “I intend to keep singing.”
The song continues as Wickline clearly overstays her welcome through 6 a.

One surprising nugget for Saturday Night Live superfans when they see Saturday Night next week? In the film, Lorne Michaels plans to host Weekend Update himself, deciding just minutes before showtime to hand off the job to Chevy Chase.
That final dramatic detail is stretching the truth — the decision to have Chase host the fake news didn’t happen at the eleventh hour. But Michaels did indeed plan to give himself airtime as the anchorman for Weekend Update. In fact, he originally considered being an SNL cast member.
At least that was the plan “in the earliest presentation because I’d done the equivalent of Weekend Update in Canada,” Michaels told Deadline in 2014. “But as we got closer to air, I began to realize that I didn’t think I could be the person who cut other people’s pieces and left my own in. Known for his smug, bemused sense of humor, Chevy Chase became famous for a series of highly profitable comedies. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in New York in 1943, Chase turned to comedy after a series of odd jobs. After a short stint with the “National Lampoon,” he shot to stardom in 1975 as one of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players on “Saturday Night Live.” In its first season, Chase became famous both for his pratfalls and his Gerald Ford impersonation. He was also the initial host of “Weekend Update,” starting each week with the catchphrase, “I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
After winning Emmys for writing and performing in 1976, Chase left “SNL” after one year to pursue a movie career (he was replaced by Bill Murray). He earned Golden Globe nominations as Best Comedy/Musical Actor...

After leaving Saturday Night Live a few episodes into its second season, it didn’t take long for Chevy Chase to return to 30 Rock. He hosted in February during the show’s third year, but it wasn’t a pleasant homecoming.
After receiving a series of smart-ass answers from Chase in October 1978, just a few months after that SNL hosting gig, talk-show host Dick Cavett begged for a straight response. “I don’t suppose there’s any chance of getting you to talk seriously about — what can I call it? — the rumored animosity that your friends on Saturday Night Live are supposed to have felt when you left. They thought maybe you endangered their careers and yours.”
Chase obliged — sorta. “I can talk about that seriously,” he said. “Here?”
Chase said he wasn’t fully dialed in on the rumors as he didn’t get back to New York much.

Saturday Night Live has long been known for its stars’ impressions of everyone from current politicians like Kamala Harris to historical figures like Vincent Price. Saturday Night, the movie set in the moments before its series premiere, isn’t aiming for verisimilitude on that level: the actors might be playing real-life people, but they’re also creating characters. The object isn’t an SNL, or even MADtv-level impersonation, and the performances shouldn’t really be judged on that basis.
So consider the ranking below — focused solely on the actors playing the show’s original seven cast members, known as the Not Ready for Primetime Players — purely a novelty, and don’t use it to fill out your ballot when it’s time to vote for the Oscars.

Michael Che has been pulling double duty, shuttling between Saturday Night Live, where he’s now celebrating 10 years as a “Weekend Update” anchor, and Manhattan’s City Winery, where he’s workshopping a new late night show.
Don’t Sleep With Michael Che is his working title, mostly, he says, because he gets a kick out of the turn of phrase. For the time being, Saturday Night Live viewers will have to settle for the show’s political impressionists.

Saturday Night Live had a lot of pop culture to catch up on in its season 50 premiere. There was the election, and the unveiling of which celebrities are playing which politicians, as well as the fact that the show is celebrating five decades on the air.
The most controversial sketch of the premiere, however, seemingly came out of nowhere. Bowen Yang appeared on Weekend Update dressed like Moo Deng, a baby hippo that has gone viral on social media. While it initially seemed like a one note bit, Yang surprised viewers by drawing some parallels between Moo Deng and Chappell Roan.

The singer recently made headlines for trying to draw boundaries between her and her fans, and Yang decided to depict Moo Deng as someone "struggling" with fame on a similar scale. It did not go over incredibly well.

Bowen Yang denies he mocked Chappell Roan on Saturday Night Live after backlash over fans of the singer saying he joked about her mental health.
The comedian took to social media to defend the “Weekend Update” segment, in which he appeared dressed up as Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo. In the bit, Yang compares the attention that the hippo receives to that of Roan, who recently called out “creepy” fans for not respecting her boundaries.
“Oh geeez. ‘Mocks’???” Yang shared on his Instagram Stories. “If my personal stance and the piece aren’t clear in terms of supporting her then there it is, I guess.”
Yang continued, “Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever. Needing the hose [right now]…”

When I first heard about the premise of Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” — the entire film takes place in the 90 minutes leading up to the late-night comedy landmark’s first episode in 1975 — I confess that I found the idea to be a head-scratcher. Sure, it seemed like there would be a backstage let’s-put-on-a-show “What can go wrong? Everything can go wrong!” real-time frenetic bustle to the thing. And that sounded like fun.
More to the point, though: The show that came to be called “Saturday Night Live” — in the first season, it was just called “Saturday Night” — didn’t come together overnight, or in 90 minutes. A universe of pitching and planning and casting and writing, along with an infinite number of decisions large and small, went into the formation of a revolutionary new television comedy spirit and form. How was “Saturday Night” created? How was it dreamed up? How did it all come together?...
