The Girl Who Played with Fire

Why Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander Was Played By 3 Different Actresses In 9 Years
Image
Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was first published in 2005 and translated from Swedish into English in 2008, and although the book was the first story to feature the character of Lisbeth Salander, live-action adaptations of Larsson's iconic debut novel and the following sequels have sporadically replaced the leading lady. The original book trilogy proved so successful that other authors have been tasked with adding to the source material's chronology after Larsson's untimely death in 2004. So, while he may not have been alive to see what a huge success his story became, his legacy is inarguable.

While the books that feature Lisbeth Salander take place in a simple and linear fashion, the Lisbeth Salander movies aren't quite as straightforward. The three actresses who have played the character so far all appear in different projects that weren't released that far apart from each other. While the movies could be...

Dragon Tattoo Movies: Every Lisbeth Salander Film Ranked
Image
Lisbeth Salander, brought to life by Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara, and Claire Foy, is known for her hacking skills and vigilante justice. The Swedish trilogy, led by Noomi Rapace, captivated audiences with a dark narrative of corruption and family secrets, ending on a bleak note. Despite critical acclaim, the American adaptation, directed by David Fincher, delivered a faithful yet more polished version of the original story.

This list contains mentions of sexual assault and violence.

Created by Stieg Larsson, Lisbeth Salander stars in his Millennium trilogy of crime novels, known to most for the first book in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. An asocial computer hacker with a photographic memory, three actresses portrayed Lisbeth in movies Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara, and Claire Foy. This includes a trilogy of Swedish-produced films based on all three books, an American adaptation of the first novel, and a movie based on...

What Happened To David Finchers Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Movie Trilogy
Image
Fincher planned a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy but Sony canceled due to high costs. Alvarez directed a cheaper 2018 sequel, The Girl in the Spider's Web, which underperformed. Despite box office disappointment, Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is still highly acclaimed.

David Fincher's celebrated 2011 thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was supposed to be the acclaimed director's first and only film trilogy. Fincher, who is known for his multiple outstanding movies such as Se7en, Zodiac, Gone Girl, and The Social Network, is still making great films such as 2023's The Killer starring Michael Fassbender. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, and Stellan Skarsgrd, is often considered one of David Fincher's best movies.

Based on the Millennium book trilogy written by Stieg Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was Fincher's immediate follow-up to his Oscar-winning film The Social Network...

Why Daniel Craig & Rooney Mara Didnt Return For The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Sequel
Image
Fincher's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' was the first of a trilogy that never took off due to box office disappointment. The 2011 film's critical success couldn't save it from being a financial letdown compared to Sony's expectations. Craig and Mara were recast in the 2018 follow-up, 'The Girl in The Spider's Web,' which failed to reboot the franchise.

David Fincher's celebrated 2011 film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was originally intended to be the first of a trilogy. Based on the Millennium book trilogy written by Stieg Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was Fincher's immediate follow-up to his Oscar-winning film The Social Network (2010) and also won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Film Editing. It was released on December 21, 2011, and is currently streaming on Max.

Fincher is well known for his psychological thrillers such as Se7en, and Zodiac, and Gone Girl.

The Correct Order To Watch The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's Millennium Trilogy
Image
Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was a huge deal in the publishing world. The books kicked off with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". When a book series generates as much heat as this one, the movies come calling. Sure enough, the entire original trilogy was adapted into three films in Sweden. Later, Hollywood took a stab at it, too, with English-language adaptations, but we'll get to those later. First, though, let's talk about the original trilogy and the correct order to watch it.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's Original Lisbeth Actor Shares Advice For TV Reboot
Image
Noomi Rapace advises Amazon's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series to create something boldly new and unique, not based on past adaptations. Amazon's series plans to invent an original story for Lisbeth Salander, focusing on themes of "female rage" as suggested by showrunner Veena Sud. The upcoming Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series will aim to explore Lisbeth's complex past and make the character its own, setting itself apart from previous adaptations.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's original Lisbeth actor, Noomi Rapace, shares her advice for Amazon's TV reboot. Stieg Larsson's Millennium series was first adapted into the 2009 Swedish-language film trilogy, which includes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest – all of which starred Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. In 2020, it was announced that Amazon was adapting its own television adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Showrunner Offers Exciting Update on Amazon Reboot
Image
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo showrunner Veena Sud recently shared that Amazon's upcoming television reboot of Stieg Larsson's beloved 2005 novel will be strong, powerful, and full of "female rage."

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote Hulu's The Stranger, Sud offered an exciting update on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which she boarded as its showrunner back in October. "I have a classic television show coming out for Amazon, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another angry woman out to get the bad guys and the monsters," she teased. "So, I'm really excited about that, bringing it to television after 15–20 years. It's been kind of in the stratosphere, and there's so much to talk about today that was relevant back then — when Stieg Larsson first published the books, the trilogy — about female rage, about abuse, about the emergence of racism, white nationalism. All of the things, 20 years later,...

Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Killer.

David Fincher's The Killer could potentially become his first original film franchise, given its success and open-ended ending. The film's critical reception and lasting popularity on Netflix indicate a strong potential for a sequel or series continuation. The Killer has the opportunity to fill the void left by the John Wick franchise on Netflix, providing a violent action franchise of its own.

Netflix's new hit movie The Killer has the potential to become David Fincher's first original film franchise. While there have been no official updates about the status of The Killer 2, the original movie provides plenty of great opportunities to foresee what a film series with Fincher and Fassbender could look like. Since debuting on Friday, November 10, 2023, The Killer has remained at the top of the U.S. Netflix movie chart for nearly a week. The Rotten Tomatoes score of 86% places it...

Image
If you don’t have the memory of a goldfish (like me), you might remember that Amazon was developing a TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That was over three years ago, and Variety has now reported that they’ve finally snagged a showrunner for the series.

Veena Sud, best known for developing The Killing for AMC, is set to serve as showrunner on Amazon’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Current details regarding the series are being kept under wraps, but it was originally reported that the project would not be a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or films, but would instead place Lisbeth Salander in today’s world with a new setting, new characters, and new story. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series with Left Bank Pictures.

The Girl Who Played With Fire: Why Didn't David Fincher Want to Direct the Dragon Tattoo Sequel?
Image
Author Stieg Larsson took the world by storm with his Millennium trilogy featuring three novels called The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. These novels were rapidly adapted for the big screen in Larsson's native Sweden, starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander and, consequently, putting the actress in the spotlight. In 2011, David Fincher took it upon himself to recreate the film for an American audience. Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo featured a phenomenal cast, including Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, and Christopher Plummer. The film was subject to universal acclaim, winning a number of accolades for its perfection.

Update September 7, 2023: In anticipation of David Fincher's new film, The Killer, this article has been updated to reflect on what happened to the David Fincher Millenium franchise that never happened.

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Director David Fincher Gives Honest Reflection On The Movie
Image
David Fincher looks back on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with pride, while admitting the movie failed at the box office. Based on the best-selling novel by Stieg Larsson, Fincher’s 2011 thriller starred Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, a tough-as-nails computer hacker recruited by a journalist (Daniel Craig) to aid in the investigation of a decades-old disappearance. Mara herself would go on to score an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, but The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo would ultimately not meet Sony's box office expectations, despite grossing a decent-looking $239 million worldwide on a reported budget of $90 million.

Though The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s box office fell short in the eyes of Sony, Fincher himself says he is proud of what he accomplished with the film, while acknowledging that things didn’t pan out the way everyone hoped given the original book’s status as an international phenomenon.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV Series Heading To Amazon
Image
Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a modern literary phenomenon, spawning a mini-media empire. First published in 2005 in Sweden, it launched the ‘Millennium’ series, which went on to include The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Since then, we’ve seen both American and Swedish movie adaptations, with Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy taking turns playing iconic hacker hero Lisbeth Salander.

Now it seems that we’re in for more, as Variety is reporting that Amazon and Sony are teaming up for a new TV adaptation of the property. Fortunately for viewers that might be getting a bit tired of the original stories, the upcoming show is set to break new ground, as it’ll take place in a separate continuity to the books, imagining what Lisbeth Salander would be like in the 2020s.

Lisbeth Salander is making a comeback, this time on the small screen. It has been revealed that Amazon is developing a The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo TV show. Details are currently slim, as it seems like the project is in the early stages of development. Venom crossed the $300m threshold via Sony Pictures Releasing International (Spri) this week and currently stands at $302.5m – but can it hold off Universal Pictures International’s (Upi) big push for Halloween?

A fourth successive weekend at number one for Sony/Marvel Entertainment’s comic-book adaptation might be a stretch too far even for Tom Hardy’s outrageously elastic anti-hero, given that Venom’s box office is dropping by around 50% each weekend, which puts it in the $16m-20m range in the upcoming Friday-Sunday corridor. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ Film Review: Claire Foy’s Lisbeth Salander Adventure Trades Angst for Espionage
Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
The world-famous Swedish vigilante hacker Lisbeth Salander is back, and this time she’s saving the world from nuclear annihilation. It’s a bit of a shift for Salander; when last we saw her in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” she was solving serial murders and exacting painful revenge on abusive male accountants.

In Fede Alvarez’s “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” she’s stealing from the Nsa, surviving explosions in bathtubs and getting in a whole bunch of car chases. It’s like if “Goldfinger” was the sequel to “Psycho.” It may be undeniably cool to watch, but it’s hard to deny that it’s a tonal Crazy Ivan.

It’s been three years since Lisbeth Salander last worked with journalist Mikael Blomkvist. She’s been using her mad hacking skills to punish abusive husbands, but she’s still got a day job, and when...

Claire Foy at an event for Season of the Witch (2011)
Claire Foy Says Lisbeth Salander Isn’t ‘Poster Girl’ for #MeToo – Because Abuse Has ‘Always Been There’
Claire Foy at an event for Season of the Witch (2011)
“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” heroine Lisbeth Salander isn’t just a near-superhero with a hidden identity and cool gadgets who helps others. She’s also the survivor of abuse, and because it comes out in the midst of the #MeToo movement, the film feels especially timely.

But Claire Foy doesn’t see Salander as a face of #MeToo, which she says represents something far bigger.

“No!” Foy told press at the footage presentation of the film at Sony Pictures on Tuesday. “We were doing prep while it was all going on, and I took great solace in the fact that the movie wasn’t jumping on what would be seen a bandwagon. The interest in Lisbeth has always been there, I think everyone is going to be deeply fascinated by her, and much like the #MeToo movement, it’s not because it’s timely — it’s always been there is the reality.

The Girl in the Spider's Web Trailer Has Arrived and It's Vicious
The first trailer for Sony's The Girl in the Spider's Web has finally dropped and it features a vengeful Lisbeth Salander played by The Crown's Claire Foy. Salander has become a cult hero over the course of the last few years, originating in Stieg Larsson's book series. However, The Girl in the Spider's Web is not a part of the original Millennium Book Trilogy, which was first adapted in Sweden. This version of Lisbeth Salander has seen and been through a lot more than any other version of the character to have been shown on the big screen and still falls in line with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise.

The Girl in the Spider's Web's version of Lisbeth Salander focuses on the vengeance, and the trailer is action packed. As evidenced from the books and past movies, she is an incredible computer hacker and...

The Crown's Claire Foy Is Unrecognizable as Lisbeth Salander in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Sequel
Claire Foy at an event for Season of the Witch (2011)
Claire Foy ditches period garments for leather in the first trailer for The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

The star of Netflix’s hit royal drama The Crown transforms herself into vengeful hacker Lisbeth Salander in the sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. She takes over the role from Rooney Mara, who was Oscar nominated for her performance in the original.

Noomi Rapace also played the part in three Swedish-language films based on author Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trilogy: Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web Trailer Continues The Story Of Lisbeth Salander
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series has had a bit of a bumpy ride over on this side of the pond. Though the trilogy was a huge hit overseas when it was adapted for the big screen, it didn’t find the same success back in 2011 when director David Fincher remade it.

The movie under-performed at the box office big time and the follow-up (thought to be The Girl Who Played with Fire) spiraled down into development hell. Further problems behind the scenes with the various filmmakers and producers complicated the process even more and all hope seemed to be lost for a sequel.

Fast-forward to last year, when we learned that Sony had scrapped Played With Fire and instead chose to reboot the property, with director Fede Alvarez in charge and the fourth installment in the book series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, acting as the source material.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web Pushed Back Three Weeks
Sony Pictures pushes back The Girl in the Spider’s Web adaptation three weeks from October 2018 to November 2018. The long-awaited follow-up to David Fincher’s 2011 film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is both a sequel and a reboot. Fincher spent years developing The Girl Who Played With Fire, with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara both attached, but the filmmaker nor the studio never got to a script that they were satisfied with to move the project into production.

What went wrong with 2011's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo?
Mark Harrison Jan 29, 2018

David Fincher's film of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo wasn't the intended franchise starter. But why not?

This article contains spoilers for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

“What is hidden in the snow, comes forth in the thaw.”

The world met Lisbeth Salander, the heroine of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, when The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was published in 2005. She only became more popular when Swedish production company Yellow Bird adapted the crime thriller and its two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, for the screen in 2009.

Noomi Rapace plays Lisbeth, a prodigious ward of the state who has poor social skills and a photographic memory, while Michael Nyqvist plays Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist who enlists her help in solving a cold case and later becomes involved in uncovering a government conspiracy in her past.

Girl in the Spider's Web Targets Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander
Claire Foy at an event for Season of the Witch (2011)
It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. Insiders claim that, while Claire Foy has in fact been offered the role, there are still scheduling issues that need to be worked out before she can sign on.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. It's possible that Felicity Jones may be offered the role if these scheduling conflicts can't be worked out, but that has yet to be confirmed. Claire Foy has also been fielding interest to star in Universal's biopic First Man, starring Ryan Gosling as American astronaut Neil Armstrong, although it...

Claire Foy close to becoming the new Lisbeth Salander
David Crow May 16, 2017

Claire Foy appears to be the frontrunner to replace Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in Sony's The Girl In The Spider's Web.

It’s been 12 years since the publication of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo took the literary world by storm with its spikey anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander. Four movies and two interpretations later, it remains a coveted role for almost any young actor. Part Pippi Longstocking and part avenging goth-punk out to punish misogynists and abusers wherever they hide, Stieg Larsson’s creation is still so potent that Sony Pictures is ready to take another stab at piercing the character onscreen, and possibly with The Crown’s Claire Foy too.

As according to anonymous sources over at The Wrap, Foy is the frontrunner whom Sony and director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) are zeroing in on to star in The Girl In The Spider’s Web.
