Actor Ethan Hawke felt that his 2001 film Training Day was unique compared to other movies about cops. But he did feel that one Training Day scene was similar to the types of scenes he’d see in other generic police projects.

Hawke asserted that Training Day was unlike his usual films. On the surface, the Antoine Fuqua feature was a film about two police officers investigating and stopping crimes. For the most part, Hawke avoided movies like these up until the Denzel Washington-led film. But Hawke believed that there was a fresh twist to a very familiar premise that made the movie attractive.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster is not the first version of Frankenstein set in the Black community. There was Black Frankenstein, better known as Blackenstein, back in 1973 and more recently FrankenThug. The difference is while the previous two versions were exploitation films, writer/director Bomani J. Story set out to make a more serious film, one that like Mary Shelly’s novel, is out to do more than just deliver scares.
Vicaria has not had an easy life. At eight she saw her mother shot and killed. In the wake of that, Chris started working for local gang boss Kango and ended up dead. Now she watches her father Donald struggle to support her despite the growing drug habit he’s developed trying to cope with their deaths.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Tubi originals for April include “Dead Hot,” co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Gg Magree. They play witchcraft students who long to connect with the spirit world. But when a ghost hunt goes wrong, they head to Salem, Massachusetts, for a masterclass.
“A Good Man,” another streamer original, lands on April 13. A man enters a new relationship in the aftermath of his wife’s affair. But soon, things go awry when he notices familiar signs of betrayal.
The four movies that comprise “The Scorpion King” arrive April 1. A prequel and spinoff of “The Mummy,” the first movie, in 2002, is a sorcery action-adventure film starring starring Dwayne Johnson, Steven Brand, Kelly Hu, Grant Heslov, and Michael Clarke Duncan. Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Actor Don Cheadle was once a part of an ensemble cast in the popular heist movie Ocean’s 11. But the actor put on a foreign accent for his role that didn’t exactly go over well for some fans.
How Don Cheadle was convinced to play his character as British Don Cheadle | Dia Dipasupil/WireImage
Cheadle was cast in the Steven Soderbergh heist thriller Ocean’s 11 along with a star-studded cast led by George Clooney. The character that Cheadle played, Basher Tarr, was the demolitions expert of the group. Basher was originally written as British. But Soderbergh would later change the nationality of the character. Cheadle, however, was convinced that the character’s origins didn’t need changing even if he himself was playing the role.
“Well it was actually written British at first and there were some casting decisions that made Steven want to go away from making him British.

Jay-Z is widely regarded as a hip-hop legend thanks to his years in the music industry and undeniable talent for rapping. He’s continued to remain a high-profile figure thanks to his music career as well as his marriage to Beyoncé. But despite being in the public eye, Jay-Z isn’t necessarily a fan of being on camera all the time.

Jay-Z first started rapping in the mid-1990s in the wake of his fellow Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn native The Notorious B.I.G. The two even collaborated together on the songs “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “I Love the Dough.”
Jay-Z released his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996. He followed it up in the following years with In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, and his seminal 2001 album The Blueprint.

“Emancipation” director Antoine Fuqua wanted music that was spiritual but yet untraditional: a tall order for composer Marcelo Zarvos, doing their fifth film together.
“The bar was very high on this one,” Zarvos tells Variety about the Will Smith escape-from-slavery saga. “It’s so relevant and so momentous for the times that we’re living in; it looks back but also shines a light on our current society.”
The Brazilian-born composer – whose other films include Fuqua’s “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “The Guilty” as well as TV’s “Ray Donovan” – employed a traditional orchestra and choir but treated them in unusual and dramatically effective ways.
“There’s definitely a lot of orchestra, but with a lot of detuning, especially in the low-end brass, and it creates a real sense of unease,” Zarvos explains, finding this technique especially useful in the scenes of brutality and as Fassel (Ben Foster) is pursuing...

Six years since the premiere of “The Magnificent Seven” and lead star Ethan Hawke is still pushing for the five-hour cut to be released.
The #ReleasetheFuquaCut campaign can only get so far, though, as Hawke revealed he’s been begging director Antoine Fuqua for over half a decade.
“In some ways, I see all his films [as] a collective scream against authority,” Hawke told The Hollywood Reporter of his collaborations with Fuqua. “[It’s] 107 [degrees] in Louisiana and there were more studio execs than our 100-person cast. He just put his head down and made his movie. I still beg him to release the five-hour cut of that film.”
The 2016 film was a remake of the John Sturges classic inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.” Fuqua’s updated Western starred Hawke, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard, and Haley Bennett.

“HAT TRICKSâ€.
By Raymond Benson
When Miller’s Crossing was released in 1990, we as an audience were still trying to determine what the Coen brothers were all about. This, their third feature film, was totally different from their previous movie, Raising Arizona (1987), which was radically different from their debut title, Blood Simple (1984). Raising Arizona was a wacky comedy. Miller’s Crossing may have had more similarities to Blood Simple, being that they are both neo-noir crime dramas with a gritty, hard edge but laced with the now-familiar but then-surprisingly unique ingredient of Coen dark humor. Still, Miller’s Crossing, being a period piece that takes place during the Prohibition years, is a more elegant, and certainly more technically accomplished, picture than Blood Simple. Sudden, brutal violence, though, remains a trait of both movies.

In the film from director Renny Harlin, based on the novel by Noah Boyd, someone is blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it look like the agency is responsible. As the world begins to unite against the U.S., the CIA must lure its most brilliant – and rebellious – operative out of retirement, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.
Hanna Weg and Matt Johnson penned the script. G-Base’s Alan Siegel, Butler and Danielle Robinson are producing with Eclectic Pictures’ Heidi Jo Markel, and Millennium Media’s Jeffrey Greenstein, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Yariv Lerner and Rob Van Norden. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson and Tanner Mobley from Millennium are serving as exec producers.

John Langley, who created the long-running TV show “Cops” which helped usher in the reality TV era, died Saturday of an apparent heart attack in Baja, Mexico, according to his reps. He was 78. Langley was competing in the Coast to Coast Ensenada-San Felipe 250 off-road race.
“Cops” was canceled in 2020 after the George Floyd protests, and had become controversial for showing primarily the point of view of the police.
For 32 seasons, it was a reality TV juggernaut, running for over 1,000 episodes and introducing the cinéma vérité style of documentary to television. The familiar theme song by Ian Lewis of Inner Circle became a part of pop culture. It remains in production for overseas networks.
After being canceled by Fox in 2013, “Cops” moved to the Spike network, now Paramount Network before being canceled again in 2020. A podcast had detailed how police were able to remove portions of the shows that showed them...

If you love the relaxing, escapist vibes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll love Nintendo’s new camping game Cozy Grove.
“It was just over a year ago, right at the start of the global pandemic we’re all still living through, that our collective obsession with Animal Crossing: New Horizons consumed us… A year later, Cozy Grove feels like the natural spiritual successor to Acnh, based on where we are now vs. where we all were then.”

NBC’s streaming service Peacock has reportedly acquired the broadcast rights for the Eurovision semifinals and finals.
“For the first 60 years of the Eurovision Song Contest, the most viable (and legal) way for U.S. residents to watch it live was to take a trip to a country that broadcast it. That changed in 2016, when Viacom aired the finals on its channel Logo. Logo remained the U.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

Animal Crossing‘s long-awaited 1.8.0 update is finally here. More importantly, a collection of new Super Mario-themed items is finally here, which means that we’re this much closer to one day being able to turn our islands into the ultimate museum for everything Nintendo.
Well…kind of. It turns out that Nintendo decided to release the base update for the game ahead of the debut of the Super Mario items. While that’s kind of a bummer, it does mean that you have a little more time to earn those extra bells, clear some space, and figure out where you’re going to put all of those new items that will surely bring out the best of New Horizons‘ most creative decorators.
Here’s what else you need to know about Animal Crossing‘s Super Mario update:

The recent Stardew Valley 1.54 update isn’t just a great excuse to dive back into one of the best indie games ever made (or just slowly walk away from your Animal Crossing addiction). It’s a chance to finally play the addictive RPG/farming tile with a couch co-op friend thanks to the game’s new split-screen mode.
While PC players have been enjoying Stardew‘s new split-screen co-op update for a few months now, the update’s recent release on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch means that everyone can get in on the fun and finally share a farm (and a couch) with their friends.
So how do you actually unlock this new feature so that you can force your friends to water plants and gather materials while you romance the townsfolk all day? There are two ways to enable Stardew Valley‘s split-screen mode, and both of...

Democratic nominee Joe Biden has entered the bubbly world of Animal Crossing, Nintendo’s popular simulation video game.
The official Biden Island was shown via a Dream Code visit — which allows one to visit an island to take pictures and enjoy the scenery, but not interact with anything — in a stream on Friday hosted by Kinda Funny Games on its Twitch channel, with Greg Miller and Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta discussing what they look for in a promotional island.
