Daniel Day-Lewis is starring in the upcoming film Anemone, a family drama helmed by first-time director Ronan Day-Lewis. The father and son co-wrote the screenplay under Plan B and Focus Features. The film confirms Daniel Day-Lewis' return to acting after 2017's Phantom Thread, his last project before officially announcing his retirement. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Anemone's premise will focus on familial relationships, specifically the bond between fathers, sons, and brothers. Day-Lewis leads the ensemble along with Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.

Oscar winner Olivia Colman is set to star as a fisherwoman and Dev Patel as her inanimate made-to-order husband in the twisted romance pic Wicker.

Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct the indie from a script they adapted based on a short story, The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones. Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce Wicker, with the cameras set to start rolling next year.

Colman will play a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where, fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel. In an otherwise conservative town, their unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos, the producers say in their film synopsis.

Black Bear will open international sales for Wicker in the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group will handle sales on the U.

Stephen Graham’s Matriarch Productions has set a development and production partnership with Warp Films.

Graham previously collaborated with Warp on his breakout role of Andrew “Combo” Gascoigne in award-winning film and series “This is England.”

Matriarch, co-founded by Graham and his actor-producer wife Hannah Walters, is working on several development projects with Warp, whose credits also include “Submarine,” “Four Lions” and “Tyrannosaur.” Hayley Squires is working on a development script, with more names to be announced imminently. Projects developed through the new partnership will be co-produced by the two companies.

“House of the Dragon,” HBO’s upcoming prequel to “Game of Thrones,” has acquired one of its leading men. Paddy Considine, who starred in HBO’s “The Outsider” and “The Third Day,” will portray King Viserys Targaryen in the upcoming series.

HBO’s description for Considine’s character reads:

Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from “Game of Thrones,” good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

“House of the Dragon” was announced by HBO in November 2019. The 10-episode prequel series is co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who executive produce alongside Miguel Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis, and Sara Lee Hess. Sapochnik will direct the pilot and a handful of other episodes.

The Night Manager producer The Ink Factory has hired UK producer Katherine Butler (American Animals) in the newly-created role of Creative Director.

Butler joins from Raw, where she was Creative Director for scripted. She was previously Deputy Head of Film at UK public funder Film4.

At Raw, this year Butler wrapped feature Dream Horse with Toni Collette and Damian Lewis. The pic will be released in the UK by Warner Bros and in the Us by Bleecker St in the spring of 2020.

She will now oversee the film and TV slate for the John le Carré producing outfit and will report to co-founders and co-CEOs Stephen and Simon Cornwell.

Alongside its work on the le Carré estate, which has also included series The Little Drummer Girl and feature A Most Wanted Man, The Ink Factory has produced projects including Fighting With My Family and Message From The King.

Peter Mullan, long considered to be one of the most important figures in the Scottish film industry, was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this week, it has been announced. The star of films like The Vanishing and Tyrannosaur, and director of Neds, is one of the latest crop of stars to join the Oscar-voting body, alongside younger Scot Jack O'Connell, who burst onto screens in 2013 with Starred Up.

Other actors invited to join the Academy this year include Lady Gaga, who took home this year's Best Original Song Oscar and was praised for her performance in A Star Is Born, Elizabeth Moss of The Handmaid's Tale, Rocketman's Jamie Bell, veteran actor Kenneth Cranham and young Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland.

The directors' category saw invitations for Out Of Blue's Carol Morley and Stan & Ollie's.

This year, the motion picture academy made history by inviting an equal number of women and men to join. In all, 842 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.

While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.

For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 842 new members in their annual effort to bring in new blood to the organization that hands out the Oscars. This is down from the 928 members invited last year, but 50% of this year’s number are women, inching closer to the goal of creating an even playing field between female and male members. It marks an 7% increase in female members from 2015 to an overall 32% of the entire organization.

A total of 29% of the new class revealed Monday are people of color, marking an 8% increase in that statistic since 2015. Among the new invitees, 21 are already Oscar winners and 82 are past Oscar nominees.

“The Favourite” star Olivia Colman will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award by the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The award will be presented by her co-star Emma Stone at the festival’s awards gala on Jan. 3 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The festival, now in its 30th year, runs from Jan. 3 to Jan. 14.

“In ‘The Favourite’ Olivia Colman steals the show as a frail and aloof Queen Anne, whose attention is being sought by two scheming cousins,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner. “For this superb performance, that has received much critical acclaim and awards recognition, it is our honor to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress to Olivia Colman.”

This year, a record 928 people were invited to join the motion picture academy and will be eligible to vote for the 2019 Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous four years: 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.

While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.

For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

The executive committee of the branch must endorse the application before forwarding it to the Board of Governors for final approval.

In an astonishing move to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, a record 928 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to invite to join the Academy, but the Board of Governors makes the final call; this year, they did not invite Kobe Bryant to join although he won an Oscar for animated short “Dear Basketball.”

Clearly, people of color (38 percent) and women (49 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.

In 2017, the Academy invited 744 new members.

Warp Films is set to produce a feature adaptation of hit West End musical “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” the independent British production company has confirmed. It marks the first musical from the Sheffield-based Warp, whose recent productions include Idris Elba’s directorial debut, “Yardie,” which saw its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s horror anthology, “Ghost Stories.”

The musical, which was nominated for five awards at this year’s Olivier Awards, including best new musical, is based on the true story of Jamie Campbell, which came to public attention in a BBC documentary, “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16,” in 2011. On the face of it, “Journeyman” seems a misnomer of a title for a film about a championship boxer who faces the most grueling challenge of his life after defending his world title at the denouement of his career. A scrappy, up-from-nothing underdog drama it is not. As Paddy Considine’s sophomore directorial effort progresses, however, the title takes on a more literal application: This is very much a film about, wait for it, a man on a journey.

If that sounds well-meaningly corny, well, so to an extent is “Journeyman.” Not close to the stark, bruising experience of Considine’s debut “Tyrannosaur,” this story of a fighter battling the extreme, personality-altering effects of concussion after his final turn in the ring is a film of somewhat soapier suffering, stirring but not always credible in its examination of a marriage and a masculine identity both shattered by a misplaced strike.

While he’s perhaps most notable on screen in films such as The World’s End and Bourne Ultimatum, Paddy Considine wrote and directed his debut feature film Tyrannosaur back in 2011. Now, he’s returned to the director’s chair for Journeyman, which follows Matty Burton (played by Considine) a boxer who suffers a head injury which affects his life far beyond the ring.

Thanks to Empire, a first trailer is now available, which effectively showcases Considine’s performance, as well as a film which looks both heart-wrenching and hopefully balanced by humanity. See the trailer below, along with a still and synopsis for the film that also stars Jodie Whittaker.

This looks really, really good. Paddy Considine has directed one film thus far, the superb Tyrannosaur. For his second, Journeyman, he’s telling the story of a boxer who collapses after a particularly bruising fight, and consequently has to fight to regain his speech, his relationships, and his life.

Considine stars in the film too, alongside Jodie Whittaker, Anthony Welsh, Tony Pitts and Paul Popplewell. And the first trailer and official synopsis have been released.

UK casting director Lara Manwaring, who has worked on projects including Nymphomaniac, Adult Life Skills and War Machine, has launched new film and TV casting outfit Lara Manwaring Casting.

The first film of the gate for the company will be Nicolas Cage action-thriller Mandy, currently in pre-production and set to shoot this summer in Belgium.

The film is produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision, Xyz Films’ Nate Bolotin and Umedia’s Adrian Politowski with finance from Umedia and Piccadilly Pictures.
