A Tiny Star Trek: Lower Decks Easter Egg References One Of The Next Generation's Weirdest Characters
The latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," titled "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel," takes place on the Cosmic Duchess, a massive, massive vacation cruise ship that has been outfitted with multiple enclosed, environmentally controlled vacation biomes. The ship includes a ski resort, a beach resort, a tropical river, and a slot machine-encrusted casino. The Duchess looks a lot like Earthship Ark from the short-lived 1973 Harlan Ellison sci-fi series "The Starlost," but it's unlikely anyone will understand that reference.
Early in the episode, Lieutenants Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) enthusiastically read a list of the Duchess' amenities. Mariner notes that they have 240 24-hour spas, an indoor water park, and, perhaps bafflingly, an underwater dry park. No one knows what an underwater dry park is, but they're eager to try. Boimler also notes that one of the space casinos has a bunch of Dixon Hill slot machines.

At one time, Watcher director Chloe Okuno was attached to direct the fourth entry in Netflix’s R.L. Stine-inspired Fear Street franchise – but while Fear Street: Prom Queen has made its way through production without her involvement (the movie ended up being directed by Matthew Palmer), Okuno has been busy getting another genre project set up. One that will reunite her with Watcher star Maika Monroe. This one is called Brides, and Deadline reports that it’s currently in pre-production, aiming to start filming in the Spring of 2025.
Scripted by Okuno, Brides draws inspiration from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Set in 1960s Italy, it will show us what happens when Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than...

Get ready for a thrilling reunion in the world of horror! Scream queen Maika Monroe and talented filmmaker Chloe Okuno are set to team up again for a new horror movie called Brides. With Monroe's captivating performances and Okuno's visionary direction, we're in for a treat!
The duo previously worked together on the psychological thriller Watcher, which Okuno wrote and directed and Monroe starred in. They obviously work well together, so we expect their new project to be another masterpiece.
Brides is Okuno's next movie. She hasn't worked on any films since Watcher. Her most recent work was directing episodes of the TV shows Let the Right One In and Teacup. For Brides, she will be directing from a script she wrote, and Monroe will star. Additionally, Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu will produce through their Likely Story film production company.

Fresh off working together on last year’s Hitchcockian thriller Watcher, Maika Monroe (Longlegs) and director Chloe Okuno (V/H/S/94: Storm Drain) will reteam for Brides.
Deadline reports, “The [horror] film is currently in pre-production and is set to start shooting in Spring 2025. Chloe Okuno is directing from a screenplay she penned.”
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in 1960s Italy, Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than he anticipated when Sally’s feminist chaos is added to his perfect, violent Eden of vampire brides.”
As you might have guessed, Chloe Okuno’s Brides is loosely inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and it’s set to “flip Bram Stoker’s narrative on its head, exploring the struggle between societal repression and carnal desire.

It’s spooky-season which means it’s time for chilly weather, falling leaves and, of course, horror movies. We’re celebrating the genre by honoring those that make it so special with a countdown of the greatest scream queens working today.
7. Anya Taylor-Joy Robert Eggers hates his debut film The Witch starring Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy took over the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled world of Mad Max with this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but its her work in the terrifying world of horror that gets her on this list. Starting with Robert Eggers The Witch, the talented young actress went on to showcase her skillset in the genre through a wide range of films while working with some of the most talented filmmakers in the business. Split, Last Night in Soho and The Menu are prime examples of what makes Anya Taylor-Joy a true scream queen.

“Teacup,” Peacock’s new series executive produced by James Wan, is a tricky one to write about. Writer, producer, and showrunner Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone) draws very little from Robert McCammon’s Stinger, opting for a modern, minimalist interpretation of the horror western, one driven almost entirely by its central mystery. The eight-episode inaugural season is so structured around its enigmatic threat, purpose, methodology, and reach that “Teacup“ becomes a landmine of spoilers to dodge for the sake of preserving its many, many surprises. While that makes for a lot of setup and character dynamics to establish, McCulloch’s careful plotting and effective atmospherics pay off, resulting in an intense, rewarding inaugural season.
Set in rural Georgia, the series sees a disparate group of people forced together by a mysterious phenomenon in their surrounding woods. The type that leaves them without electricity, cell phone service, or a way to escape whatever...

“Woman of the Hour” is almost here.
The movie, which debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival to an enthusiastic response, finally hits Netflix on November 18. And a new trailer for the film, which is stars Anna Kendrick (who also produced and directed the film), gives you a new idea about what to expect. Watch it below.
“Woman of the Hour” is based on the real-life case of Rodney Alcala (played in the film by Daniel Zovatto), who in the midst of a years-long killing spree showed up as a contestant on “The Dating Game.” Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, the woman that he won a date with, who could have been his sixth victim. It doesn’t get much creepier.

Maika Monroe has earned genre icon status with her roles in thrillers and horror movies like Longlegs, God Is a Bullet, Watcher, Flashback, Villains, Tau, Bad Blood, Flying Monkeys, It Follows, and The Guest. When she ventures into dark territory, she often plays the heroine – but she’ll be shifting into villain mode for the remake of the 1992 psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (watch it Here). It sounds like a set-up straight out of a pulpy genre movie: what if the man you were matched with on a kitschy 1970s dating TV show turned out to be a serial killer? But as it turns out, Anna Kendrick’s feature directorial debut Woman Of The Hour is based in all kinds of truths – not just emotional ones, but literal factual ones too. Set in 1978, the film also sees Kendrick step in front of the camera as Cheryl Bradshaw, who goes on The Dating Game and ends up bagging a date with Daniel Zovatto’s Rodney Alcala. Except, Alcala is a serial killer, who murdered several women in the late 1970s.
For Kendrick, Woman Of The Hour tapped thematically into territory she wanted to explore, drawing on her own experience of having been in an emotionally abusive relationship. “[With] this movie, I think the screenplay naturally explored that conundrum of,...

Eight years after Ryan Murphy ushered in a new era of prestige true crime retellings with "The People Vs. O.J. Simpson," the provocateur is back with a new take on a headline-grabbing murder case. This time around, it's the disturbing and tragic story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez, two brothers who are serving life in prison for the murder of their parents. "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" just dropped on Netflix yesterday, but according to viewership data site FlixPatrol, it's already the most-watched show on Netflix in the United States.
Netflix admittedly seems to be in a dry spell with its TV offerings lately, as "Monsters" is beating out inexplicable hit "Emily in Paris," two-week-old Nicole Kidman vehicle "The Perfect Couple," and a handful of reality and documentary offerings like "The Circle," "Selling Sunset," and "Worst Ex Ever," among other shows. Keanu Reeves is not only Hollywood’s sweetheart, with all his chivalrous deeds poking through to establish him as one of the most beloved gentlemen in the entertainment industry, but also one of the most talented actors of all time. That’s not all, for he is also incredibly kind and humble even in the roles he gets to embody on the screen, be those from the action genre or any other.

But among all the masterpieces he has been perfectly cast in, there have also been some major mishits that could have seriously disrupted his career because of just how out of place he looked in them. "Longlegs" won't need long legs to succeed at the box office. The much-hyped horror movie from director Osgood Perkins is a hit in its opening weekend, where it's on track to gross around $22 million. That's more than double the production budget which, according to indie film studio Neon (via World of Reel), was less than $10 million.
According to The Wrap, early tracking for "Longlegs" indicated a debut of $7-9 million, so it has massively outperformed expectations. Meanwhile, Neon has set two new box office opening weekend records in the same year, first with the Sydney Sweeney-starring "Immaculate" ($5.3 million), and now with "Longlegs." The film stars established horror scream queen Maika Monroe as rookie FBI agent Lee Harker, who is assigned to work on a disturbing case involving a serial killer known only as Longlegs (played by Nicolas Cage).

The first few minutes of Osgood Perkins’ unsettling new psychological thriller Longlegs are some of the most effective in recent memory. Playing with sound, sharp cuts and curiosity-inducing creepiness, Perkins delivers a series of jump-scares that get your heart pounding out of your chest. Trust us, you’ll feel it. It’s a hell of an opening, that says: this is a film to simultaneously lean into and wince away from; a film prepared to pull the rug from under you at any point; a film that delights in playing with your senses to provide maximum shock value.
Maika Monroe (who has excellent previous form in this arena with It Follows and recent thriller Watcher) is Lee Harker, a socially awkward FBI agent with a remarkably accurate gut instinct, which we’re told early on is ‘half-psychic’. She’s put on the case of a serial killer involved in family murders over multiple decades,...

Calling Longlegs star Maika Monroe a “scream queen” is a bit of an understatement at this point. Perhaps the term “scream empress” is more appropriate for an actor who already solidified her genre cred ten years ago with the one-two punch of cult classics, The Guest and It Follows. In the decade since, she’s added a few more genre gems to the list including Greta (2018), Villains (2019) and Watcher (2022). And, as of this Friday, Monroe returns to the big screen in Osgood “Oz” Perkins’ Longlegs, which already boasts critical acclaim and hype on the level of David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows after its 2014 Cannes premiere and 2015 release.
Monroe’s recent run of good fortune is all the more significant when it’s contextualized with the fact that she nearly quit the industry prior to shooting Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s Villains in 2018.

Sequels may be all the rage in Hollywood, but a good one? a necessary one? a truly anticipated one? That’s still rare. So how refreshing that one of American indie cinema’s most beloved (and original!) horror outings is preparing to scare up fans (new and old) with a follow-up feature 10 long years since its first release.
Such is the case with David Robert Mitchell’s cult hit “It Follows,” which is readying for a sequel next year. In October of last year, Neon announced plans for a sequel to the film — which follows a group of Detroit pals, including Maika Monroe in her star-making turn as Jay Height, as they attempt to fight back a nameless, faceless entity that is passed to victims through sexual intercourse — with both Mitchell and star Monroe slated to return.
And while Monroe can’t provide too many details of what’s to come,...

The marketing campaign for Neon’s “Longlegs” is the most ambitious for a horror movie in recent times. There’s a zodiac killer-level secret code spread in The Seattle Times, a phone number you can dial in to hear star Nicolas Cage whisper threats in a creepy voice (and as advertised on a Los Angeles billboard), and the eerie and elusive trailers and teasers that have dropped so far, mostly leaving Cage’s satanic serial killer out of the bag.
The ’90s-set satanic serial killer horror in the vein of “Seven” and “The Silence of the Lambs” is directed by Osgood Perkins, the “Gretel & Hansel” filmmaker who is, yes, the son of “Psycho” screen scream icon Anthony Perkins. (He also goes by Oz colloquially.) “It Follows” and “Watcher” scream queen Maika Monroe stars as Lee Harker, an emotional shell of an FBI agent with a disturbingly personal connection to a murderer who,...

Even though we’re only in 2024, the decade of the 20s has already brought us a great number of cinema masterpieces, including inventive thrillers. If you like to get your nerves tickled with some mystery stories, we have a perfect list for you.
Here are 6 thriller gems of the past 4 years you need to discover, according to Reddit.
Society of the Snow (2023)
Based on the true story of the Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed right in the Andes back in 1972, this must-see film is so convincing that it feels like a documentary, yet unnerving enough to get you fully immersed in this survival tale.
Fresh (2022)
Next is an emotional roller coaster of a thriller that centers on a woman who goes on a romantic weekend getaway with a mysterious man, only to realize he has darker motifs behind it. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan’s performances are top-notch here.

So far in 2024, few films have had as impressive a marketing campaign as Longlegs. The new critically-acclaimed horror from director Osgood Perkins announced itself to the world by… well, not really announcing itself. Instead, US distributor Neon released a series of super-creepy, super-cryptic teasers gesturing to the film’s serial killer code, accompanied by haunting images and a general air of impending terror. But, for UK audience, the real terror came from not know exactly when Longlegs would arrive here. Thankfully, we have an answer – and after some hugely positive early word, audiences here can look forward to the film arriving this summer.
It’s been confirmed that Longlegs will hit UK cinemas on 12 July – meaning there’s only about a month to wait to see what Perkins has cooked up. That’s the same day as it gets a wider release in the US, meaning everyone can join the...

A decade later, Maika Monroe has no plans outrunning her breakout role.
The actress teased that her upcoming horror movie They Follow will be well worth the wait after she signed onto the sequel of 2014’s It Follows back in October, along with returning writer/director David Robert Mitchell.
“David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant,” she told Collider. “The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it.
“He’s very specific, turns down so many… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’ And I read it, and it’s just so f***ing good. It’s so good. I’m so excited.

These days, Netflix’s global chart is reigned supreme by the 2007 neo-noir thriller titled Disturbia. This Shia Labeouf’s flick, which follows a teenage boy who starts spying on his neighbors and suspecting that one of them is a serial killer, gradually puts more and more suspense, until the main mystery is solved and the audience is relieved.
Surprisingly, Disturbia’s synopsis is really reminiscent of the plot of another thriller must-watch, and some Redditors believe it’s even better. It also explores the topic of serial killers, but from quite a different angle.
The movie’s story revolves around Julia, a young actress, who relocates to Bucharest with her husband but finds the city unwelcoming. There she learns of a murderer, dubbed the Spider by local media and notorious for decapitating his female victims.
Julia’s fears are enhanced when she notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across...

We're hearing about so many new horror films lately, and we couldn't be more excited. Recently, we learned of an upcoming horror flick called Menace. IFC Films and Shudder have joined forces again and acquired North American rights to this movie, which is expected to be released sometime in 2025.
Menace is being described as a sci-fi horror film coming from Image Nation Abu Dhabi and the genre label Spooky Pictures. These two production companies were behind the horror movies Watcher and Late Night with the Devil. Randall Okita, who's known for helming the thriller flick See for Me, directed Menace from a screenplay written by Thom Eberhardt (Night of the Comet). Production on the movie recently wrapped in Canada.
Here's what Okita had to say about partnering with IFC Films and Shudder for Menace via Fangoria:
I am thrilled to be working with IFC and Shudder to share Menace with audiences around the world.

Just ten days ago, we shared the news that Isabel May of Let’s Scare Julie and the Yellowstone spin-off 1883 has the lead role in the sci-fi horror film Menace, the first film to be written by Night of the Comet screenwriter Thom Eberhardt in over 20 years. Now Variety reports that Menace has landed a distribution deal with IFC Films and the Shudder streaming service, with the plan being for IFC and Shudder to release the film in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime in 2025. Variety also unveiled a lower quality image of May’s character in the film, which can be seen above.
Directed by Randall Okita, who previously worked with IFC Films on the thriller See for Me, Menace follows a research student (Isabel May), who has a psychotic breakdown and is remanded to the custody of her aunt and uncle in a small town.

Director Randall Okita (See for Me) is back this year with new movie Menace, which was notably written by Thom Eberhardt, the writer of 1984 fan favorite Night of the Comet.
Variety reports this morning that IFC Films and Shudder have acquired the North American rights to the upcoming film, which is expected to see release sometime in 2025.
Isabel May (1883) will star in sci-fi horror movie Menace, which comes courtesy of Image Nation Abu Dhabi and the genre label Spooky Pictures. This is the third feature from Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, behind Watcher and Late Night with the Devil.
“The film follows a research student (Isabel May), who has a psychotic breakdown and is remanded to the custody of her aunt and uncle in a small town.
“There, strange things begin to transpire and people start disappearing, leaving her uncertain about what is real or what is simply a figment of her imagination.

If there's one thing that actor Maika Monroe is going to do, it's put on a brilliant performance in a critically-acclaimed horror movie that's destined to be underseen and underappreciated by most of the general moviegoing public at large. The scream queen's first real breakthrough role came in 2014's "The Guest" and she wasted no time following that up with "It Follows" (which is receiving a sequel with the original cast reprising their roles), 2022's criminally underrated "Watcher," and the Paramount+ original "Significant Other."
This time, however, the star is backed up by none other than Nicolas Cage and actor-turned-director Oz Perkins on "Longlegs" in the hopes that audiences will be right on time to appreciate whatever scares and compelling imagery await. This latest horror feature comes with a fair amount of hype behind it, with previous trailers setting the stage for an occult thriller with one heck of an unsettling sense of atmosphere.
