Very silly, Very funny.

Very silly funny and enjoyable comedy. Made me think of the exceptional Father Ted from back in the day. I think the more you watch the more you see, references to films etc.

great suprise

Lots of gags and good to see something thats not too political correct and has original stories. Brian Gleeson the star of the show and life will never be the same again.

Irreverent comedy at its best
Golightly67823 April 2021
If that kind of humor is your thing, you'll love this. I had no idea the Gleesons were related. Hilarity ensues. Obnoxious, cruel, stupid and silly. Funny all around. I certainly look forward to a second season of this. Loved Franks mum. What a gem.

It is funny and silly and great
barryryan-1374124 April 2021
Plenty of laughs here at a time when we all need a laugh.

Yes, its silly and daft but so what, it will cheer you up.

The Gleeson lads can do comedy as well as every other genre they do, they are a talented family. Sarah Greene is just great in everything, didn't know she was in it, nice surprise.

Quirky and sentimental with a touch of bawdy humour.
davidallenxyz4 May 2021
IMDB reviews have become increasingly polarised. A show is either amazing or dreadful. 10 stars or one. There doesn't seem to be any place for the opinion that a show is "alright".

"Frank of Ireland" is such a show. It's just "alright".

It's pitched as a strong comedy. It's not. It's certainly amusing, and pleasant to watch. But overall it is gentle, eccentric and sentimental, with only a handful of big laughs, most of which come from puerile jokes that may not be to some viewers' tastes.

The biggest issues are with the leading characters, Frank and Doofus (who are just friends in the show but are played by real life brothers Brian and Domhnall Gleeson). Doofus in particular is pitched as some kind of village idiot (the ridiculous name gives it away), but his character is often far too intellectual for the character to be believable. Similarly with Frank, who is supposedly a careless idiot, but who also seems to draw people closer to him by treating them badly, when really they should push him away. Sarah Greene is excellent as Aine, but her character is far too tolerant.

The best laughs come from the supporting cast - which is demonstrated in the fourth episode, a catastrophic am-dram performance which is the highlight of the whole series.

I certainly didn't want to switch it off. But if a second series came along, I wouldn't seek it out either.

Off beat great Irish humour
klodax16 April 2021
With words like 'shift' and 'gee' being used, this show is unapologetically Irish. I can't understand some of the low reviews!?! Is this show like marmite?? Non stop, laugh out loud, quick witted daft humour! Really enjoyable :)

Doofus.
owen-watts18 August 2021
The Gleeson brothers off-beat comedy is a mixed bag for sure but not a complete failure. While it's not bracingly honest enough to work as the Curb Your Enthusiasm type show and also never really nails the film parody schtick - Brian Gleeson's Frank is a hypnotically self-absorbed lead, there are some transcendently bonkers moments and the "12 Angry Men play" episode is disproportionately fantastic (likely because it's the only one that's fixed in a single location). Worth a glance for certain - but needs more focus if it's to continue.

Quirky laugh out loud Irish comedy

What a talented family the Gleesons are!! Great comedy with laugh out loud humour, pleasantly quirky without relying on it.... and a great insight into how we Irish can laugh wholeheartedly at ourselves!

Ugh
amstandard21 April 2021
I started watching this show because I am such a fan of the Gleeson brothers. Unfortunately, this show is not for me. I just don't find it funny, and the plot is dull and overdone. It's hard to warm up so some of the main characters because they don't seem to have any admirable qualities and are generally unlikable. I tried hard to enjoy this but had to call it quits after 3 episodes.

crude, rude but funny
meadhbhcollins18 April 2021
Comedy style is rude and crude from the start, kinda like a mix of the inbetweeners, faulty towers, gavin and stacey, fr ted and home alone. Acting, styling, costumes, sets and cinematography are top notch. Even though i don't like the crude/dark comedy style, i still found myself watching the full series. Worth a watch.

Terrible
fabripaolo20 April 2021
When I saw the trailer I thought it looked hilarious. I was counting down the days to it's release. I didn't think much of the first episode but that's not unusual with a series because it takes a couple of episodes for the actors and writers to get into a groove. We gave it 4 and half episodes hoping it would get better but it only got more ridiculous and just plain stupid. There are so many good actors in the show but their characters are all awful and not likeable in the slightest. Real shame.

And a half

I love Brendan Gleeson. In Bruges was spectacular, was also good in Mr. Mercedes. I've seen Brian in a few things and he doesn't posses the finesse of his father I must say I did enjoy this. Yes it's whacky, tacky humout but so what. Don't watch and criticize when you think Hot Fuzz is an Irish production. I happened to love London Irish( with an almost all Irish cast ) but I'm sure most of you would say it's stupid , juvenile , not Irish tho it is! They may have Americanized it bit but it still has amazing Irish actors. That is all!

Absolutely non-entertaining attempt at comedy.
TxMike19 April 2021
OK, reading a few reviews I can see that some viewers really like this show. I watched the first episode then started the second and just couldn't continue. Then I started the third episode and couldn't continue. It is just so much juvenile foolishness with cartoonish characters that I didn't enjoy any of it. The irony is that I like the Gleeson family of actors, the dad and his two sons who are in this series playing brothers. But this show is so far off the mark that I look at them as stooges.

For me a big miss. I like some well made absurd comedies, like "Dumb and Dumber" and "Trainspotting", but this show is just a big nothing burger.

Irish copycat of 'Eastbound & Down'. It works.
rochfordsimon16 April 2021
First episode is full of cringey and childish comedy. Come episode 2 I got into the mood of it. Basically they copied the main character after every DANNY MCBRIDE scene in a film/show ever.

Locations, acting and flow is good. There are some laughs in each episode.

Think Dumb and Dumber
jlakely21 April 2021
At first, it can be hard for an American viewer to get their head around what the Gleeson brothers are trying to do with this show. Then you get a couple of episodes in and it hits you: Think Lloyd and Harry with Frank and Doofus. There are also a lot of movie references that seem random at first, but are actually quite clever. I binged the whole six 30-minute episodes at once, and I think it's actually brilliant the more I think about it. This show had me laughing out loud A LOT. Embrace the dumb.

The first episode was brilliant.

The second episode wasn't.

Don't think I'll stick with it.

Excellent Satire!
salexero19 April 2021
This series tells the story of a man and his family and friends in a lighthearted series of ridiculous situations that leaves viewers wanting more. In some ways, it is reminiscent of the Gallagher clan antics of the series Shameless-appalling human interactions you don't or rarely see in real life, but that are terribly hilarious to imagine and bring to life on screen. It's a creative production that is both well written and played by the entire cast.

Good but not great....lots of potential
joscon-1661619 April 2021
I personally liked this more than my spouse. Its quirky and definitely Irish. Some of the jokes are a little immature but thats what makes it funny IMO. I can definitely see this show getting better over time though, lots of material to work with.

A juvenile smut fest
repete5221 April 2021
I realize that the headline will attract sophomoric interest. Certain aspects of this show could be a legitimately good humorous show, but with the almost non-stop crudeness and vulgarity, it's over the top. It seems like they used every crude situation and terminology that could be fit into this time slot to attempt to gross out to the max. Sad.

Brilliant show
obrien7416 April 2021
Best comedy show I've seen on TV in years. I didn't expect it to be as funny as it was but it made me laugh out loud and in the depressing times we're living in that was great. I've seen critics call it toilet humor and it is but it's extremely funny and what's wrong with that? Just enjoy it for what it is, an excellent comedy that will make it smile.

Let's Be Frank: Ghastly. Ugh and Triple UGH.
untilnow9924 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Vapid, stupid and no redeeming qualities. And that's just Frank.

How is this funny? Some gross no-hoper of a guy and we're supposed to believe anyone wants to get into bed with this jerk-off? People at a funeral service sit and listen to him sing about a dead lady's "hair on her chinny chin chin?" Talk about suspension of disbelief.

His Mum is semi-nympho and just as crude (w/out being funny) as he is. His best friend is some semi-moronic Frankophile.

I love all types of humor. Frank of Ireland is not the least bit funny.. It's actually just one big cringe-fest of insufferably ridiculous situations and even the so-called funny lines are grossly predictable.

If you want to laugh and be entertained, I recommend "Fleabag" and "Drifters." The sex jokes in those series are seriously innovative and hilarious. Frank of Ireland is an embarrassment to all the Irish. I can't believe anyone likes this codswallop.. And I write this as an Irishman.

Very entertaining, very Irish
paulodaly18 April 2021
Very funny Irish comedy . The two Gleason brothers are hilarious. They really flesh out the two characters , add to the mix a brilliant supporting cast , clever pop culture nods and even some slapstick and you've got a winner . Writing and production are a standout .

gavpcasey26 April 2021
The show is great craic with a blockbuster cast. I can't believe there are people giving ridiculously-unwarranted, negative reviews. Some crass examples of hyperbollix like 'worst show ever'; catch yourselves on FFS. If you don't get Irish humour you have my sympathy.
