Psych's homage to the gritty 70s

Another great delivery from Saladin Peterson. This episode has so much to offer - the Psych homage to the 70s, with the old grainy yellow-hued flashbacks, the duds, the music, the strut, even a thrown hubcap!!!

We have a real treat in guest star Ted Lange!! I really hoped to see him roll out "the Isaac" but alas he did not; but he did go by "Pookie" so that makes up for it.

This is a Henry-forward episode, so there is a lot of good back and forth between our dynamic duo and Henry, which is always fun.

There are some great one-liners in this one, as per usual:

Gus (after Shawn throws him the hammer in the evidence locker): "Stop it! You know I'm afraid that being wrongfully convicted is the tragic way my story ends."

Shawn: (when Gus pulls out the laser level) "Whoo! You better hope they're not uneven in there!"

Shawn (having a vision at the lab): "I am getting it! And it is a bad mothuh!" Gus: "Shut your mouth!" Shawn: "I'm having a vision." Gus: "I can dig it!" Shawn: "It's a big birthday cake!" Gus: "Make a wish! What!?"

    So good!

    I really like this episode, obviously...with a 9 rating.

It's just Psych being Psych. I wasn't going to write a review, but I really just had to put down...that as I watch this episode for what must be the 6th time or so... Maggie Lawson's inability to act very well seems pretty damn apparent in this episode. Her delivery of lines is just unconvincing and strained. And it isn't that her acting in this episode is necessarily glaring more than others...I just happened to really see it in a handful of scenes in this episode. And I'm not sure what I dislike more..Kirsten Nelson as an actor...or the Chief character. They are both pretty terrible. Even with those annoying parts, the episode is still great. It being a great episode is memorable, and the bad acting/annoying characters don't overshadow the Gus/Shawn/Henry fun on display here. Sometimes the bad stuff can ruin the good stuff...but in this episode, the good stuff makes ignoring the bad stuff easy. (I think this is the only user review for this episode...which I was not expecting.)

(at around 14 mins) They show the outside of a pawn store, that is the front of the Gold and Silver Pawn store in Las Vegas which is where they film the reality show Pawn Stars (2009).
    • Goofs
Shawn tells Pookie that the DA overturned Franks' conviction. DAs can't overturn convictions; only courts can.
    • Quotes

Karen Vick: It goes without saying, Mr. Spencer, that your father is in no way to participate in this investigation. He's no longer on the force, and his meddling could compromise the case in court. Do I make myself clear?

Shawn Spencer: Yes, you do, Chief. What isn't clear is why people always say, "It goes without saying", yet still feel compelled to say the thing that was supposed to go without saying. Doesn't that bother you?

Karen Vick: No! And frankly, I could care less.

Burton 'Gus' Guster: Now that's the one that bothers me. Why do people say, "I could care less", when they really mean, "I couldn't care less"?

Karen Vick: Well, why don't you tell me how to properly say this: if you share any official information about this case with your father or let him anywhere near any new evidence, then the two of you will have to find another police department to work for and I will personally see to it that each of you is charged with obstruction of justice.

Burton 'Gus' Guster: You split an infinitive.

      Shawn Spencer: Good catch, Gus.

Karen Vick: You two realize I carry a gun, right?

Burton 'Gus' Guster: That was perfectly elocuted.
