‘Panic’ Canceled After One Season at Amazon
Image
“Panic” has been canceled after one season at Amazon, Variety has confirmed.

The YA drama debuted on Amazon back in May. The one-hour series was based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver.

It takes place in a small Texas town, where every summer the graduating seniors compete in a series of challenges, winner takes all, which they believe is their one and only chance to escape their circumstances and make their lives better. But this year, the rules have changed — the pot of money is larger than ever and the game has become even more dangerous. The players will come face to face with their deepest, darkest fears and be forced to decide how much they are willing to risk in order to win.

The cast for the series included Olivia Welch, Mike Faist, Jessica Sula, Camron Jones, Ray Nicholson, and Enrique Murciano. Oliver adapted her...

Unscripted Boom & TV Reboot Frenzy Could Follow Amazon’s Mega-Deal For MGM
Image
Much of the coverage of Amazon’s $8.45 billion deal to acquire MGM has focused on the company’s film attributes and the impact on theatrical distribution.

The executive shuffle on the film side, featuring the likes of Michael De Luca, will get a lot of headlines, as will the importance of owning IP and a film library that can feed Amazon’s hungry video services. But the Lion’s television business has been one of its most profitable divisions in recent years and the mega-deal will certainly put a new focus on this unit.

There will be inevitable attention paid to which classic MGM film properties Amazon Prime Video and its sister streamer IMDb TV can reboot, but the deal could also have a major boost on the streamer’s unscripted fortunes. Then there are question marks over the future of Epix and of MGM Television as a stand-alone entity.

Fortunately, he’s met a great girl, Ashley, and it seems like things might finally be improving. But then Ashley vanishes. Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, and Scottie Pippen in The Last Dance (2020)
Hulu New Releases: June 2020
Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, and Scottie Pippen in The Last Dance (2020)
June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.

This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.

June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Jennifer Aniston in Cake (2014)
Oscar Watch: First-Class Films From Aniston, Connelly, Costner, Gere Still Seek Distributors As Clock Running Out
Jennifer Aniston in Cake (2014)
The 2014 Oscar clock is running out for powerful, but still unsold, festival showpieces starring Jennifers Aniston and Connelly, as well as Kevin Costner and Richard Gere.

Several unspoken-for films came into this year’s Toronto International Film Festival determined not only to find a distributor, but to set a 2014 release date. In the case of Still Alice, the touching drama of a woman’s descent into early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, that plan worked spectacularly well. It had a stirring world-premiere screening on Sept. 8 in a less-visible afternoon slot at Tiff and quickly sparked Oscar buzz for star Julianne Moore, a four-time nominee who has never won.

Sony Pictures Classics presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard quickly recognized the kind of role that has Oscar written all over it, and two days later the picture sold to Spc (which, despite having its largest slate of Oscar hopefuls ever, still had an...

Industry awaits Tiff deals
Updated: A torpid start to the market coupled with concerns over the desirability of acquisition titles has left buyers looking expectantly towards reportedly a $10m-plus deal for Top Five.

By Sunday evening a growing number of buyers were circling Chris Rock’s adult comedy (pictured), arguably the only potentially commercial available title to earn universal praise.

Also drawing attention were François Girard’s Boychoir, Jalmari Helander’s Big Game, Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Thomas McCarthy’s The Cobbler and Ed Zwick’s Pawn Sacrifice.

Acquisitions teams have also seen Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, Paul Bettany’s directorial debut Shelter, Michael Douglas starrer The Reach and Kristen Wiig starrer Welcome To Me. Contrary to reports Sophie Barthes’ Madame Bovary remains on the table and had not been sold at time of the updated report on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s offerings include Oren Moverman’s Time Out Of Mind, Bill Pohlad’s Love...

Toronto plans acquisitions push
Exclusive: In a bid to drive acquisitions, Toronto top brass are understood to be collaborating with select sales agents to allow festival staff and volunteers to attend four early-stage private buyers screenings.

Screendaily has learned the move is being orchestrated to replicate the buoyant atmosphere of public screenings in an effort to stir up sales.

The timing of the move is dictated by a growing recognition that most decision-makers at distribution companies will have left town by the time these films officially premiere in the second week, despite Toronto’s efforts to spread its riches across the duration of the festival.

That strategy was informed in part by the festival’s new and well documented policy of holding back until the second week premieres of anticipated films that will receive their actual world premiere in Telluride.

Two cases in point are North American premieres of The Weinstein Company’s Benedict Cumberbatch starrer The Imitation Game and Fox...

Us producer boards Oz supernatural thriller
The Ring and Mulholland Drive producer Neal Edelstein is serving as the executive producer on Ashes, an Australian supernatural thriller/horror film about three generations of women who battle a curse.

Jonathan auf der Heide is attached to direct the film written by Mike Jones and produced by Damsel Pictures. Raquelle David.

As a first-time feature producer, David knew she had to enlist an experienced Ep to qualify for financial support from Screen Australia and Screen Nsw. She approached a lot of Australian EPs, who turned her down, evidently due to concerns about the genre.

Via Jones, she got in touch with Edelstein and met the Us producer last October at the American Film Market, which she attended with Screen Australia.s assistance.

Edelstein responded to the script, which has parallels with Haunting Melissa, a digital, transmedia ghost story he has created via his company Hooked Digital Media, and agreed...

"6 Souls" Succumbs to a Pointless Supernatural Twist
The introduction of the occult into a psychological thriller can sometimes push a film over the edge from being simply unnerving to being terrifying. It can also cut a film off at the knees and completely destroy the air of mystery and chilling mystery it's spent its first two acts building. 6 Souls falls into the latter group thanks to its new title effectively acting as a spoiler (it's original, better title was Shelter) and for how the plot devolves into a ghost story about spiritual hokum that comes nowhere close to being as terrifying as its introductory premise: a young man who has a spooky knowledge of murder victims that he displays by switching between the victims' personalities and physical characteristics in an already supernatural take on dissociative identity disorder (commonly mislabeled as multiple personality disorder). It has a superb cast including Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but they're...

Blu Review: 6 Souls (Vic's Review)
Cinelinx is totally freaked out by the new 6 Souls Blu-ray!

The Set-up

A psychologist (Julianne Moore) crosses the line into the surreal when she meets Adam (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a man with multiple personalities, who is not all that he appears to be.

Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein

The Delivery

6 Souls is an odd but entertaining scarefest from the producers of The Ring and starring Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It is written by Michael Cooney (who also wrote the excellent yet similar Identity) and is directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein.

Moore plays Dr. Cara Harding, a practically-mided criminal psychologist who doesn't buy into radical theories and notions, including those of her father (Jeffrey DeMunn, The Walking Dead), also a criminal psychologist. She finds her personal beliefs turned upside-down when he introduces her to Adam (Rhys Meyers), a patient who...

Blu-ray Review: Julianne Moore Can’t Save ‘6 Souls’
Chicago – From the writer of “Identity” comes the misguided “6 Souls,” a film known as “Shelter” when it was originally scheduled for release back in 2010 and now basically getting a straight-to-Blu-ray release after a dismal worldwide gross of under $1 million. Fans of the great Julianne Moore may be curious. You can still love Julianne Moore and not feel the need to see “6 Souls.” Trust me.

Rating: 1.5/5.0

Moore plays a shrink skeptical of the entire concept of multiple personality disorder who’s brought in to deal with the truly fascinating case of a man (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who seems to be possessed anew every time he takes on one his personalities. As she investigates deeper, she realizes that his personalities are actually murder victims. Is he stealing their identities or has he been possessed by their souls?

The first problem with “6 Souls” comes in the wildly different acting styles brought to the...

Blu Review: 6 Souls
There's nothing worse than a supernatural thriller that has you mesmerized for the first two acts only to lose your respect in the last two. That's exactly how I felt when I pressed "Stop" after watching 6 Souls. All the warning signs for a movie that doesn't deliver were there. For instance, it was originally released in 2010 with a different title (Shelter) and just now is seeing the light of day.

Dr. Cara Harding (Julianne Moore) is introduced to a patient named Adam (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who has multiple personalities. After researching some of them, she realizes they are all actual murder victims. Cara starts digging into the man's past to discover how or if his personalities all tie together somehow. Her investigations lead to encounters with the victim's relatives and mysterious religious fanatics.

Talk about a movie showing promise and then just falling off the deep end halfway through. 6 Souls...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: '6 Souls,' an Overdue Surprise for Horror Fans, Leads a Slow Week for New Movies
6 Souls - Radius TWC - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein Cast: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeffrey DeMunn,Frances Conroy, Brooklyn Proulx. Full cast + crew 6 Souls - under its previous title of Shelter - first hit theaters back in March of 2010. That was in Japan, however. For some reason it took about three years for it to find a release in the U.S. That kind of delay is usually the sign of a stinker, but that's not quite the case here. 6 Souls isn't a grand slam, but there's plenty of reason it shouldn't have taken this long to journey to our shores. Some really standout performances by Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeffrey DeMunn, and an intriguing story of a psych patient whose multiple...

Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in 6 Souls (2010)
FEARnet Movie Review: '6 Souls'
Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in 6 Souls (2010)
The patently familiar new psycho thriller 6 Souls actually played film festivals back in 2010 under the title Shelter before collecting dust on a Weinstein shelf for a few years, only to pop up on VOD this week. In April of 2013. That's not meant to imply that every genre title that suffers a long release delay is a generic, tiresome, and already outdated piece of low-end cable TV fodder, but in the case of 6 Souls (as well as the recent John Cusack flick The Factory) the plain truth is that it would have been a forgettable turkey three years ago. Today it's just a three-year-old turkey with some mild curiosity value.

The curious will be rewarded with a psychological thriller about a man with multiple personalities that seem to correspond to a half-dozen murder victims. Jonathan Rhys Myers is the lunatic suffering from what I call "early-career Edward Norton" psychoses; Julianne Moore...

Writer Michael Cooney Talks 6 Souls, His Interest in Psychological Stories, His Writing Process, What’s up Next, and More
After a three year delay 6 Souls is finally available to watch here in the states. The film was released in the UK under the title Shelter back in 2010. When a movie sits on the shelf that long it’s usually the sign of something rotten in Denmark, but 6 Souls is actually a pretty fun movie with a killer cast. The story follows psychiatrist Clara (Julianne Moore) as she attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding a Dissociative Identity patient (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) with a unique set of symptoms. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein (Underworld: Awakening) and written by Michael Cooney (Identity), the film also stars Jeffrey DeMunn and Frances Conroy. During a recent press day for the film I landed an exclusive phone interview with Michael Cooney. We talked about the similarities between 6 Souls and Identity, the film’s impressive cast, his research for the mystical elements of 6 Souls,...

6 Souls - Clips from the Scary Horror Starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Watch 4 new clips from 6 Souls (a.k.a. Shelter) starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, this is a seriously eerie film which I managed to see recently via VOD, and I can highly recommend it if you're up for some Skeleton Key-like storytelling. The film opens on April 5th via Radius TWC, cleverly-scripted by Michael Cooney, with a cast including Jeffrey DeMunn, Frances Conroy, Brooklynn Proulx and Nathan Corddry. In 6 Souls, after the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding's (Julianne Moore) faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to open her up to accepting unexplainable psychiatric theories, her father introduces her to Adam, a patient with multiple personalities who takes on some of the physical characteristics of his other personalities. Cara quickly discovers that Adam’s other personalities are murder victims...

New Trailer Released for 6 Souls
It has recently been announced that Julianne Moore’s 6 Souls will be available starting in March, and a new trailer has been released. The movie was previously known as Shelter, and was directed by Underworld Awakening‘s Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein in 2009:

“After the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding’s (Julianne Moore) faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to open her up to accepting unexplainable psychiatric theories, her father introduces her to Adam, a patient with multiple personalities who takes on some of the physical characteristics of his other personalities. Cara quickly discovers that Adam’s other personalities are murder victims and the more she finds out about him and his past, the closer she and her loved ones are to becoming murder victims themselves.”

6 Souls also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeffrey DeMunn, and was written by Michael Cooney.

Long-Shelved Thriller 6 Souls Finally Gets An Unremarkable Trailer
Take note: Cabin in the Woods is probably the only horror movie - if this kind of thing is limited to just one genre - that can sit unreleased on a shelf for over a year and still have reached theaters with any amount of dignity and acclaim. But nearly every other time, rest assured the film will be of a quality barely higher than toilet scum. The latest example of the figurative cinematic red-headed stepchild is Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein.s 6 Souls, a film that, appropriately enough, stars the red-headed Julianne Moore and Jonathan Reys Meyers. It used to be called Shelter for some reason, perhaps after the place where it was sent instead of theaters. If you don.t remember the movie at all, it.s because it was filmed all the way back in 2009, but is just getting its first trailer. Here.s ...

The New Trailer For ’6 Souls’ Looks Soulless But Fun
Having a handful of notable names behind a film doesn’t mean it’s going to see the light of day. Look at what happened with Cabin in the Woods and Red Dawn. Granted, there were bigger studio issue with those films that prevented them from being seen by moviegoers. But even once all the kinks were worked out, executives were still timid about releasing them in theaters. In the case of Red Dawn I can clearly see why; Josh Peck gave probably the worst performance I saw in a film last year but that’s the subject for an entirely different article. Despite having a four time Oscar nominated actress in the form of Julianne Moore and a talented young Hollywood actor coming off a successful run with The Tudors which Jonathan Rhys Meyers was nominated twice for at the Globes, the film Shelter still collected dust on the shelf.

Trailer for '6 Souls' Starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers
It was originally titled Shelter, and it's been languishing at The Weinstein Co. for a long, long time. Now they've shuttled the Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein-directed thriller to their Radius-twc label and set a March 1 VOD date and an April 5 theatrical date and called it 6 Souls. Today we get a first look and a chance to see whether or not it's worth our time. The film stars Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and follows Dr. Cara Harding's (Moore) whose faith in God has been shaken following the death of her husband, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to open her up to accepting unexplainable psychiatric theories, her father introduces her to Adam (Meyers), a patient with multiple personalities who takes on some of the physical characteristics of his other personalities. Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in '6 Souls' Horror Trailer
Sometimes, for whatever reason, usually a bad one, a film gets shelved for an indefinite amount of time. And then, a couple years later, make their way to the big screen quietly. One such film is Shelter, which was shelved back in 2010 and has already been given a straight-to-dvd release in Canada. But now the film is coming to the United States with the title 6 Souls. The horror film follows a doctor (Julianne Moore) overseeing a patient (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) with multiple personalities, and discovers that those personalities are murder victims. You can guess where it goes next and this first trailer doesn't look great. Here's the first trailer for Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein's 6 Souls in high def from Apple: After the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding's (Julianne Moore) faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to...

Watch: Trailer for Julianne Moore's Five Years in the Making '6 Souls' Lands With a Thud
Julianne Moore
Five years after initial photography began and three years since its completion, the Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers starring supernatural thriller "6 Souls" is finally preparing for its U.S. VOD and theatrical release via distributor RADiUS-twc, who yesterday released a trailer for the film. The thriller follows Moore as Cara Harding, a forensic psychiatrist who, after the death of her husband, takes on a particularly bizarre case of multiple personality disorder in patient David Bernburg (Meyers). After realizing that each of his personalities are those of past murder victims, she begins to investigate the real cause of David's disorder. Originally titled "Shelter" upon its initial announcement in 2008, the film has been in release limbo since being canned by original distributor Dimension Films. The wait has been so long that its two directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein were able to film, edit, and release 2012's...

Julianne Moore’s Shelter Gets a New Title and Trailer
Hey, remember that movie “Shelter” starring Julianne Moore? Yeah, me neither. The film first surfaced way back in 2010 with a trailer when it was still going by “Shelter”, but it’s now gotten a new spiffy trailer and a new title, “6 Souls”, and has located a limited theatrical run, though like most heavily delayed movies these days, you’ll be able to stream it way before it hits theaters. It still stars Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, though, in case you’re wondering. Bonus points: this film was the Hollywood debut of Swedish duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein (I mean, how could they be anything but Swedish with those names?), who went on to direct the most recent “Underworld” movie with Kate Beckinsale, “Awakening”. After the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding’s (Julianne Moore) faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science.

Where My Girls At? Susan, Tilda, Uma, Sir Ian
The Man Who Loved Actresses Too Much. That's the title of my forthcoming memoirs. Because I love too many actresses I often lose track of their upcoming film projects so let's look at some recent casting notices (by recent I mean I'm sorry I didn't mention them earlier this month!) involving ladies I, and hopefully you, love.

Susan Sarandon, currently co-starring in Cloud Atlas, has been working consistently since her career peak (1988 through 1995) but her parts haven't been so great or the films have left one wanting. Can The Last of Robin Hood reinvigorate her career or spark passion in her fanbase again? The Hollywood bio film is from the indie directing team of Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (full disclosure: I used to be friendly with Glatzer) who previously made The Fluffer and Quinceanera. It's about Errol Flynn's (Kevin Kline) affair with a 17 year old actress at the...

Daniel Knauf Bringing Dracula to NBC
In what is easily the best news we've heard all damned day, Deadline has learned that Daniel Knauf, creator of the HBO series "Carnivale," has joined NBC’s upcoming 10-episode series "Dracula" as showrunner/head writer, working with series creator Cole Haddon.

NBC's "Dracula" will feature Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("The Tudors", Shelter, Velvet Goldmine) as the iconic vampire. The series, from producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender and writer Cole Haddon, is being produced for both NBC and the UK’s Sky Living. It was originally bought by NBC in January with a “script-to-series” commitment, meaning that it wouldn’t go through a pilot stage but straight to series if NBC brass liked the script.

"Dracula" is produced by Krantz’s Flame Ventures, Callender’s Playground Entertainment, Universal TV, and NBCU International Prods.’ Carnival Films & Television, the company behind "Downton Abbey". Krantz and Callender are executive producing the series with Gareth Neame and Anne Mensah.
