In Beijing 2008: Games of the XXIX Olympiad (2008), American swimmer Michael Phelps won a gold medal in all eight swimming events (he and three other American swimmers were in three relays), participating in five solo events and three team events. Michael Phelps's eight gold medals, in all eight events, surpassed Mark Spitz's record of seven. Mark Spitz was "seven for seven" at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany. Michael Phelps was "eight for eight" in 2008. All eight events and dates, in order, were: the first gold medal (solo) on Sunday, August 10, 2008, which was the 400 meter individual medley, the second gold medal (team) on Monday, August 11, 2008, which was the 4x100 freestyle relay, the third gold medal (solo) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, which was the 200 meter freestyle race, the fourth fold medal (solo) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, which was the 200 meter butterfly, the fifth gold medal (team) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, which was the 4x200 freestyle relay, the sixth gold medal (solo) on Friday, August 15, 2008, which was the 200 individual medley race, the seventh gold medal (solo) on Saturday, August 16, 2008, which was the 100 meter butterfly, (his narrowest victory was won by 0.01), and the eighth gold medal (team) on Sunday, August 17, 2008, which was the 4x100 medley relay.
