Dreary, implausible & poorly performed near-future sci-fi
danieljfarthing23 April 2024
In dreary, poorly performed near-future sci-fi "Breathe" Jennifer Hudson & over-confident teen daughter Quvenzhané Wallis live alone (months after hubbie / dad Common left them) in empty post-apocalyptic NY, struggling in the barren planet's devastated atmosphere - til Milla Jojovich, Sam Worthington & Raúl Castillo turn up asking about their oxygen machine... but are the gun-toting visitors' intentions good or bad? Cue tediously repetitive to & fro 'trust them or not' flawed sequences all leading to a wholly implausible short-cut ending. Doug Simon's lame screenplay is chiefly to blame, but Stefon Bristol's stressed direction doesn't help. Disappointing fare. A turd. Flush it.

Meh...
paul_haakonsen16 April 2024
I had not heard about this 2024 action thriller titled "Breathe" prior to sitting down to watch it. But I figured that I would give the movie a fair chance, since it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, and plus it had Milla Jovovich on the cast list, which counted for something.

I will say that the concept idea behind the script had a lot of potential to it. However, the execution from script to screen left much to be desired. I had great difficulties buying into the movie, especially since it was supposed to be an oxygen-less world, but it just didn't have that feel to it. So writer Doug Simon didn't exactly deliver anything that was worth writing home about.

There were a couple of familiar faces on the cast list, with the likes of Milla Jovovich, Sam Worthington, Dan Martin, James Saito and Common. I will say that the acting performances in "Breathe" were good.

Visually then "Breathe" wasn't a particularly impressive movie. Sure, it was passable for what it was, but you're not in for anything grand here. And I guess the orange filter that the movie had to it, whenever we looked at outdoors scenes helped to mask brighter colors of green and such that we would otherwise have seen on foliage throughout the course of the movie.

I am sure that there is an audience out there for a movie such as "Breathe", however, I have to admit that director Stefon Bristol didn't impress me with this movie.

My rating of "Breathe" lands on a generous three out of ten stars. The movie just felt like a half-hearted project.

Breathe: A sci-fi studying character & soul; humanity in its darkest days
foojiin13 April 2024
Breathe

Not sure why so many people are rating this film so poorly. I have my suspicions why, but nevertheless; definitely an interesting premise for a film. Some very nice sets and locations used, the directing and camera-work was simple, but nicely conveyed the feeling of the bleakness of the world; and there were some really nice shots later during a certain scene with Worthington and Jovovich, strengthened deeply by some of Quvenzhané Wallis's best acting throughout this film. ( trying to be spoiler-free... )

I watch a lot of sci-fi and it is nice to see the primary cast being POC and nice to see some lesser-known actors taking the forefront. Diverse casting is something that definitely needs to be improved in this genre specifically. Quvenzhané Wallis (Zora) and Jennifer Hudson (Maya) had some nice onscreen chemistry, and it's always a pleasure to see Common's engaging acting.

Others complain about the believability and logistics of the world/scenario, and while it's definitely not the best sci-fi film you could watch right now, the focus felt, to me, to be more on the actual characters than the science itself; by no stretch was the writing perfect but the characters never felt unrealistic and the danger never felt without weight.

The pacing was okay, but some parts felt like they could have been cut down in favour of more the character focused scenes, but who doesn't like a bit of action?

Most definitely not the 1 star that other reviewers are currently giving, though as I say, I suspect there may be other "reasons" for those reviews.

Overall a solid 5/10 and a nice introduction to some new faces in the genre & the industry.

F.

Umph...!

This movie is a punch in the stomach while full.

There are pletora of bad movies out there and this one proudly joins the top 10 of the worst.

The characters are faked badly, the leading duo just suck, and Milla and Sam - well, they looked like they came to assist their 5 year old daughter at the school performance.

You will be skipping large parts of the movie with your remote.

You will be wishing that you've chosen some old classic to watch again, instead of this.

You will be sorry.

Rotten Tomato doesn't yet allow ratings on their page. Perhaps to avoid negative reviews for the sale of diverse casting in this movie.

Just go outside and get soaked by a rainfall.

Overall annoying
confirmeddeath13 April 2024
I had seen the score and I figured this would be an awful movie, but I gave it a shot.

25% of this movie is the alert system going off and borrowing into your skull. They really didn't need to have the alert system go off non stop throughout the movie, but that's what they did.

I mainly watched this cuz of Milla Jovovich, thought it can't be that bad if she's in it, but it was that bad...

I wish I had a Flashlight and some Copper Wires, cuz then I could have made a "Electromagnetic Pulse" generator and used it and saved myself from this abomination basically.

I won't even rate this... It's just bad.

A sci fi disappointment, to say the least..
HorrorFilmHellion11 April 2024
I didn't have any clue what this was when I decided to check out the latest new scifi that dropped, but it only took about 5 minutes and a rediculous social justice mural in the beginning to know that this was going to be bad. There is a lot to complain about here, but to get to the point, the premise is absurd and makes no sense, the characters are quite poorly written, and the props and plot devices are unconvincing and cheap. I couldn't make it all the way through, which is rare for me, and skipping forward didn't really make it tolerable. Perhaps if someone can completely block out plausibility and boredom, then it will get some likes.

Darwin awards of survival
nicojgt16 April 2024
Seemed promising but quickly makes no sense at all.... The character zora seems litteraly stupid, smart enough tobuild machines, incapable to understand that survival comes by being careful. Incredible that living in a post apocalyptic world some one would keep a spoilt brat attitude.

The grandfather takes pointless risks to get a book, and the father takes pointless risks to burry his family member so far away.... Seems like Darwin awards, what did they learn over the past 4 years of survival...

Protect their loved ones stay alive, be suspicious, when you are the only ones to have infinte oxygen... They learnt nothing, aside from the mother who had common sense.

The enemy characters made no sense.

Best part was when it ended!
lvbhd12 April 2024
They lost oxygen on earth and 4 years later it looked like it had been through a nuclear holocaust. Buildings and bridges were degraded as if they were abandoned for 150 years (maybe more). Super over kill on background!

It was absolutely one of the worst movies I've seen in decades!!! It needs to be pulled from all platforms and viewing capabilities. I only watched it because I like all the actors in it. But damn, what a disappointment! I mean, people actually previewed this after editing and somehow convinced themselves to release this to the public anyway. Some one or some few, should be terminated and seek employment elsewhere!

A humane film - can see why some usual suspects got triggered
sohelaby-0979112 April 2024
Jennifer Hudson, Quvenzhané Wallis and Sam Worthington are superb. Breathe is a strikingly thoughtful entry into the science fiction genre, distinguishing itself by exploring the themes of humanity and cooperation over the more typical narratives of conquest and supremacy. Through its brilliant script and heartfelt performances, "Breathe" encourages a dialogue about empathy, reminding us that education and understanding are the bedrocks of peace.

The relevance of Malcolm X in this narrative is deeply felt, as the film echoes his beliefs in the power of education to change minds and build a peaceful, collective world.

The film is a reminder that our strength lies in our unity, not our supremacy. Its message is clear: education and understanding transcend all boundaries, be they on Earth or among the stars. This film is a must-watch for anyone who believes in the transformative power of humanity.

Enjoyable movie

Warning: Spoilers
I think it was an enjoyable movie to watch! The plot was quite simple and some things just did not really make sense, but it was definitely not bad. There was a good amount of suspense. I liked the visuals of the film as well; it truly gave a certain atmosphere for the audience. I think it's worth watching if you like science fiction movies.

(SPOILER): I did not like the concept about Tess at the end suddenly being a "liar" and the whole radio thing just wasn't needed. It felt like they forced some kind of plot twist that didn't have to be there at all. Suddenly she did not know anything about the father, the machine etc. And I think it would've been a better plot if she actually did..? But then again, Maya already mentioned that she had never heard of her, so then it does kinda make sense, but I'm just not sure if the last scene of Tess was the best way to do it... Her death was also too abrupt and I was weirded out; when her foot moved I thought she was still alive, but then she was not.

Decent premise, but written to tick boxes
ShepardRahl21 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Something happens (it's not explained of course) that rids the Earth of all of it's breathable air. As a result all plant life and wild life die forcing people to live in shelters. In this shelter the mother is a farmer, the father is an engineer/survivalist who created this particular shelter, and the daughter is straight up annoying.

As I said the premise is decent, but their is way too much stupidity in this movie. The movie opens with a panning shot of the interior of the shelter and there is a newspaper clipping that says "Local farmer defies city. Changes law." You never know what law this was supposed to be, but it doesn't matter. You can't change laws by defying the city. That's not how it works.

There is a scene of the daughter standing in front of a mural of a black girl with a mask on holding her fist up and it says "We Can't Breath". I about shut it off there. They aren't even trying to be subtle anymore.

The grandfather dies while trying to get a Malcom X book for the girl. Yes, because even when it's the end of the world apparently we still need race politics.

They push the "stronk black wahmen" trope to new levels. The farmer mother can apparently fight off anybody she comes across. And she thinks the Earth will heal itself even though with everything being dead that would be quite impossible.

The daughter is apparently such a genius she can create an EMP out of a flashlight and copper wire (rolls eyes), but is also too dumb to know that when you are transmitting on a radio that anybody can hear trying to talk to your father you don't broadcast important information. Which is what she did, and how people found them.

I'm sad that Mila and Sam were wasted on this trash heap.

Warning: Spoilers
Erm so all the 02 is gone but there is still wind guns work and you can go outside unprotected apparently. Oh yeh that ozone layer thingy me Bob made from o2 which stops us burning to death is still working. Also all the oceans seas and lakes have evaporated so no water so no organic life but muh family from the Bronx is good because they looted all the soup and math trophy's and the evian from the local Walmart before anyone else in their hood. They then build a super duper Alexa that can make air with math hence why the dad needed the math trophy's to award his kid for doing math erm yes this movie is as stupid as this review. Please excuse the punctuation I'm drunk but not as drunk as the people that thought this movie was a good idea.

Stupid and boring.
seven-johnson13 April 2024
I'll watch a film with people of different ethnicities to mine, that's no big deal, it doesn't trigger me.

Boredom triggers me.

The ~bearable points - Common, Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jojovovich and Sam Worthington too... that's it, 4 BEARABLE points in amongst a stagnant pool of turds.

"Writer" Doug Simon is the person that needs singling out for specific criticism - in between eating the crayons they "wrote" this with Simon did a picture of a flower and his mummy told him it was "bad". In an angry reaction to this they did this egregious piece of hatred towards cinema.

The writers strike was partially poor writers taking action to highlight just what worthless entitled filth they are, powerless in the face of EVIL A. I. Nurses and Doctors worldwide shrugged in solidarity.

Thing is, I'm pretty sure A. I. was used in the making of this, some of the exterior shots (every single one that doesn't have an actor in) seem to just be A. I. art + an intern doing the Pan+Zoom edit.

Anyway, Simon might have heard of science, but didn't bother with an research beyond "having heard of science", nor any into writing, script writing and clearly has no discerning palette as they ate all the crayons regardless of flavour.

Like almost all of us at this point I've played round with A. I. and give me parity of paycheck and timeframe, I'll cook up a film better and less stupid than this using A. I. or not, I saw a film a couple of months ago that was written and directed by a guy with Down's Syndrome that was markedly better than this, "The Puppet Asylum" - more entertaining, competent, poignant and just all round better.

Literally, the only thing that would have made this film anywhere near enjoyable would have been Alec Baldwin Directing and a "production mishap" - preferably in the writers' room, which for this was probably the writers' bedroom at their parents house and Dad needs to have a word because you need to get a proper job and start paying rent.

I for one welcome the future unemployment of "writers" and our new A. I. overlords. Hollywood's burning, each new "blockbuster" seems to stall and audience's just don't care. Good.

I know your husband
nogodnomasters27 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It is 2039 and the Earth has reached the "tipping point." Oxygen has been depleted from a stated 27% (20.7%?) to 2%. Darius (Common) managed to construct a refuge in his home in Brooklyn. It is self-sustaining with solar panels. Since hydrogen was an issue, I surmise the oxygen is provided by the electrolysis of water. When Darius' father dies, he leaves to bury him and never returns. The film would be extremely boring with just Mom (Jennifer Hudson) and daughter (Quvenzhané Wallis) creating family drama. A group arrives from Philadelphia and wants in. They claim their oxygen generator is on the fritz and need to "look" at theirs. This escalates.

The characters were not well developed. The plot was okay, but if you're going to lock people up, I prefer a film with John Goodman and questionable aliens. Production was tedious.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Air was stoled
nick-388-25751011 April 2024
I sink script of this movie was stoled, original name «Air», author Nick Piotrovski.

Original story was sent to Timur Bekmambetov, he is a friend of producer Basil Iwanyk, it was in 2019.

Logline: Breathe in, breathe out, don't breathe in for as long as possible.

Because of the transition of the magnetic poles the planet's atmosphere loses almost most of it's air. Mad is a diving instructor who manages to hide with his wife and daughter in a pressure chamber, but without electricity the oxygen generator does not work and oxygen rapidly decreases. To survive, the family needs to travel by electric car to a new shelter - a big cave with an underwater entrance. The cave seems like a solution, but it is already occupied by another diver Zheka who has his on point of view on the disaster. While Mad leaves his family to find food, drinkable water and medicine neccessary for his daughter, Zheka decides to kill Mad's family to get the opportunity to breathe longer. Zheka loses the fight, the family is reunited, and they go up on board a submarine. There are changes for the better on the surface of the earth - the atmosphere is being restored, they have a chance to survive.

Decent till last 30minutes
alwinsup23 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Breathe has a decent start, nothing spectaculair or something that will reach the newspaper but a world where human kind is dieing is always a little bit fascinating to me.

And then... Alice from Resident Evil has returned! Now thinking about it.. they can maybe connect these two movies. Anyway.. I still like to see her on the big screens, so +1. Also the father from the child -> great actor.

The script is.. well.. okay.. and the acting is also okay... You can enjoy this movie without thinking to much about everything till a certain point.

That certain point is reached about 30minutes till the end.. rip Allice. At that point everything goes downhill.

Everything gets rushed... The script goes bad, the story line doesnt make sense anymore, the fellow follower guy goes from being helpfull to being the leader/mastermijdn and evil knievel (i mean.. that is some character build up and 180° switch in less then 20seconds).. oh.. and that moment where the woman and child can just walk out of the room without any intervention from the evil knievel.. i mean come on!!! How unnrealistic!! What was the director thinking!! And the mother.. somehow surviving the night without air,, drives back with the car and somehow ends up on a roof where she reunites with the kid??? Anyway, mother was a terrible actrice in the whole movie.

So... Decent start/ middle point. Then.. gets reaaaaly bad. So only a 5 out of 10.

Too Bad to Be True
Tweetienator30 April 2024
Well, I'm still stunned after watching Breathe - this is a masterpiece of boredom and a fine example of what is wrong with movie making these days on a grand scale: a script that is not developed but more or less a fragment, "hero" characters that are most annoying, a production that is somewhat okay but can't save the day, and dialogues right out of cloneland. I've watched tons of post-apocalyptic movies with a far lower budget, but they are entertaining masterpieces compared to this one. First of all, don't bore us to status brain dead while watching the most boring characters doing, well, nothing, and talking, well, about nothing. I really don't know, the idea is not that bad but the whole rest is. This one makes some cheesy post-apocalyptic movies of the 80s look like a drama of Shakespeare himself... Only recommended if you want, for whatever reason, to torture yourself, then this one will do.

Flawed but still underrated
vacyle19 April 2024
Acting: 9/10 Story: 8/10 Director: 4/10 Visuals: 8/10 What is bad about this movie:
  • the psycho in this movie is a boring cliché seen in so many psycho movies
  • the story, while not original, is pretty good, but is dumbed down by several bad choices in the script, which are quite off putting and they explain so many bad reviews. I agree with the bad reviews but not with their final score.

  • several plot holes could have been fixed with a more inventive script, but instead, they are constantly taking you out of the movie's flow
  • there is no black bad character, all baddies are whites, which might indicate a political agenda.

  • small details like watches indicating only O2, while today's smartwatches can show so many more things.

What is good about this movie (and most of the bad reviews are ignoring):
  • very good acting
  • I liked the story build up, the realism and the imminence of such of scenario in real life
  • special effects are more than enough for this movie and do very good job for the immersion
  • the ending, while quite predictable, was giving me a bit of hope in humanity after all.

Enjoyed the Movie!
kmason-6643229 April 2024
I watched this movie on Friday night and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was great considering its small budget. I really enjoyed the performances, especially Quvenzhane Wallis, who plays the daughter Zora. I thought everyone did a great job with the performances. I loved the mother/daughter relationship between Jennifer Hudson and Quvenzhane. I also loved to hate Sam Worthington in this. He definitely played a role that was pretty different for him. Same with JHud, it was nice to see her in something that had nothing to do with music. And I usually don't do sci-fi, but I enjoyed it and definitely would recommend for sure.

This makes no sense, especially the ending
michvanbeek3 May 2024
At first glance, the film seems very interesting and Breathe has a great cast on board to become a good film. Starring, we see Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, she received the prestigious figurine in 2007 for her adjoring role in the film Dreamgirls. Quvenzhané Wallis was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the film Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2013, even becoming the youngest nominee ever in this category at the age of 9 years and 135 days. In addition, we see Milla Jovovich, who of course we all know from films like Resident Evil and The Fifth Element and for dessert we get Sam Worthington, who played Sully in James Cameron's Avatar- films and also has a laundry list of fine films to his name. There is also a (small) role for rapper Common in the film, which also played roles in John Wick: Chapter 2 and Wanted from 2008. The papers are basically good and the story also sounds very interesting. Still, if you see the trailer, this will probably make you doubt, because that looks rather cheap with the red/orange filter.

And unfortunately the trailer was right, because although the first reviews of this film were not too good and this is perhaps a bit very exaggerated, the film is just not good. Especially Sam Worthington, who plays the role of Lucas, really plays an extremely bad role in this film and he probably only played this role for the money and didn't really feel like it. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson plays mom Maya who is left alone with her daughter Zora (who invents these names by the way) when father Darius disappears without a trace when he wants to bury his father. Hudson does her thing dutifully and doesn't know how to impress or anything like that. Quvenzhané Wallis, who therefore plays the role of Zora, makes a bit of an attempt and perhaps she plays the best role in the film, although we should not exaggerate that either. That remains Milla Jovovich, who plays the role of Tess, who just does her thing and nothing more actually.

The story is put together too simple and you get to see a 'home invasion' movie, where you actually know from the first minute what is going to happen. Not much attempt is made to disguise the course a bit or make it exciting. Here and there the film eventually becomes a bit entertaining when Maya and Tess go out and Lucas and Zora are left alone. In the end, the film will go exactly as you think it will go. The end really makes no sense at all and above all that gives the feeling that the whole fight has been completely for nothing. When Tess and Lucas travel all the way to New York from Philadelphia to watch and get their hands on an oxygen machine, they really had discovered what happened in the end and that gives the film a full stab in the back. Fortunately, the film lasts an hour and a half, but even that still feels like a pure waste of time.

Breathe has unfortunately become what the trailer already suggests, a pure B- film that tries to tear on a few names. Although the story has a lot of potential and sounds very interesting, you eventually get to see a cheap 'home invasion' movie. Here and there the film is still a bit entertaining, but if actually rapper Common puts down one of the best roles with his very small role in the film, you already know enough. How these kinds of films eventually manage to make a cinema internationally is really a mystery, in the past this had ended up directly in the video libraries. Don't be fooled by names like Sam Worthington or Milla Jovovich and don't be tempted at all that the two protagonists have been an Oscar winner and an Oscar nominee, because this film is simply not worth going to a cinema. For the really curious among us, you can wait for the movie to come to a streaming service or so and even then the movie is just not good.
