‘Mea Culpa’ Review: Tyler Perry’s 1980s-Style Erotic Thriller Serves Up Guilty Pleasures to His Fans
Within his deal at Netflix, Tyler Perry has found room to flex his narrative muscles, mixing his familiar brand of comedy and melodrama with other genres. “A Jazzman’s Blues” applied Perry’s usual formula to a 1930s period setting. Before that, his first film for the streamer, “A Fall from Grace,” found him trying his hand at a legal thriller. Now, with “Mea Culpa,” the prolific writer-director pushes that genre further, making a loopy 1980s-style erotic thriller with a distinctly Tyler Perry flair. The plot skews close to “Jagged Edge” with a lawyer falling for her client, a man accused of murdering his partner, while referencing another famous ’80s staple, “Fatal Attraction,” via a love nest accessed only by freight elevator.
The lawyer in this scenario is Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), and her possibly guilty client is artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), who’s accused of murdering his girlfriend.

With over a decade at one of the most successful independent studios under her belt, Michelle Sneed is striking out on her own.
The Tyler Perry Studios alum, who most recently served as president of the sprawling and prolific Atlanta operation since 2018, just launched a new studio. A Few Good Women Productions is targeting a first-of-its kind model, with an exclusively female leadership offering green lights and maintaining project autonomy through every phase — acquisition, development, financing, production, licensing and distribution.
“One thing that I’ve always said is, ‘Why do big studios get to have lot of fun?’ — and by ‘fun’ I mean majority ownership of these assets,” says Sneed, who wants to see that money trickle down not to just partners and creators but budgets. “I have dedicated my career mostly to Black and brown content. And I’d say that about 99 percent of the time it’s been on extremely small budgets.

The award-winning producer will direct his fifth feature film for Netflix after helming multiple projects for the streamer, including the 2020 thriller "A Fall From Grace," the comedy "A Madea Homecoming," and the period drama "A Jazzman's Blues." Perry also has another project in the pipeline, the upcoming film "Six Triple Eight," which stars Hollywood heavyweights Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and Susan Sarandon, among others. The film is a World War II-set drama based on a 2019 WWII History magazine article by Kevin M. Hymel. It will focus on the 6888th battalion, the only all-Black and all-female battalion that served in World War II.
At the moment, Netflix has only made information about the cast and crew of "Mea Culpa" available. With that in mind, here's everything we know about the film so far!

Tyler Perry expressed his excitement over the recent push for diversity in the film and TV business at a Toronto industry keynote on Sunday but added the drive would only succeed if it were accompanied by education, training and time to gain experience.
The director, who has blazed a trail throughout his career in enlarging the space for black stories and talent on the small and big screen, is at Toronto for the world premiere of his new film A Jazzman’s Blues ahead of it release on Netflix on September 23.
A labor of love for Perry that has been 27 years in the making, the drama stars emerging talents Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer as star-crossed lovers in 1940s Louisiana, whose relationship is thwarted by race laws of the time.

The “Madea” movies have only intermittently done right by the character of Madea. Tyler Perry’s creation Mabel “Madea” Simmons is an outrageously anarchic agent of chaos that, until now, has never fit particularly comfortably in Perry’s didactic melodramas. (Imagine Bugs Bunny getting stuck in the world of “Davey & Goliath.”)
With “A Madea Homecoming,” Perry has — probably for the first time since “Madea’s Big Happy Family” — created a vehicle that lets Madea be Madea. No longer required by Perry the executive producer to tone down the material for a family-friendly PG-13 rating, Perry the writer-director-actor lets Madea be the blunt-talking, gun-toting, no-nonsense Thc enthusiast that the character was always meant to be.
Madea’s extended family — including Uncle Joe (also Perry), Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis Patton), Mr. Brown (David Mann), and Cora (Tamela Mann) — gathers at her house for the graduation of Tim, who’s the valedictorian at a never-named Hbcu.

Tyler Perry’s previous Madea movies have raked in more than $600 million at the box office. But a theatrical debut for “A Madea Homecoming,” which launches Feb. 25 on Netflix, was never part of his conversation with the company.
“I didn’t even think about it. They’re a streaming service, and I understand the importance of making content in support of that,” Perry tells Variety, noting that he released “Madea’s Farewell Play,” a filmed version of the stage show, on BET Plus when launching the streamer with ViacomCBS in 2019.
Despite skipping the megaplex this time, Perry is still a believer in the theatrical experience.
“There will be some slight changes or some erosion, but some movies and experiences are meant to be enjoyed in a room full of people on a huge screen, and not on the computer or television,” he says. “My hope is that theaters and theater chains...

America’s favorite grandmother Mabel “Madea” Simmons is back and badder than ever — meaning she’s still “braless and lawless.” Netflix dropped the trailer Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Homecoming,” the 12th installment in the iconic franchise.
“Black don’t crack… unless you’re using it,” Madea says in the trailer for the film, which will center around her great-grandson’s college graduation, where hidden secrets and family drama threaten to ruin the celebratory reunion. The movie streams on Feb. 25.
Perry — who has been playing Madea since 1999, when he first debuted the character in his play, “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” — was planning to retire his gray wig after 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral” and his 2020 live “Farewell Play Tour,” but changed his mind after the pandemic hit.
He told Variety in 2020, “I was done with Madea, completely done with it … But as I’ve been...

Madea is back. Tyler Perry is taking his iconic femme senior character who has grossed over $1 billion at the box office to Netflix with a 12th movie, A Madea Homecoming. A 2022 drop date is planned.
Perry will direct and write with Will Areu and Mark Swinton producing. EPs are Perry and Michelle Sneed.
No plot details yet. Perry reportedly said that Madea would be making her final appearance in the 2019 Lionsgate feature A Madea Family Funeral, which made $75M at the global box office. That’s obviously not the case.
A Madea Homecoming continues Perry’s work with Netflix following last year’s release of A Fall From Grace which was watched by 39M households in its first month. He is also writing, directing and producing A Jazzman’s Blues for Netflix. That pic stars Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, and unravels 40 years of secrets and lies in a tale of...

Say Hallelujer, Madea fans! Tyler Perry is bringing back his most beloved character for an all-new adventure on Netflix.
Perry will write, direct and star in the film, donning Madea’s dress, wig and devil-may-care attitude one more time. Perry retired Mabel “Madea” Simmons in 2020 with the sold-out “Madea’s Farewell Tour” (which was also filmed for BET plus), while the character’s final film appearance came in 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral,” where Perry ostensibly closed the casket on the character.
Perry has been quietly developing the project since last fall.
“I was done with Madea, completely done with it,” Perry told Variety, when he was honored as 2020’s Showman of the Year. “But as I’ve been looking at the state of the world — and I finished a tour in January, just before the pandemic started to break in the country — and the amount of joy and laughter...

Tyler Perry’s Madea is back! Perry is bringing his beloved character back to life, and this time, they’re heading to Netflix.
Perry will write, direct and star in “A Madea Homecoming,” which will be the ninth “Madea” film and the 12th time he will have portrayed the iconic old lady on screen. The news comes after Perry had said in 2018 that he intended to kill off Madea once and for all and end the franchise with 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral.”
“It’s time for me to kill that old bitch. I’m tired,” he told Sirius Xm at the time. “I just don’t want to be her age playing her.”
The films have been box office boons for Lionsgate for over a decade, and all of Perry’s films, including the “Madea” series, have collectively made over $1 billion at the domestic box office — so this is a big get for Netflix.

Tyler Perry has found the stars for his passion project “A Jazzman’s Blues,” casting Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer in the lead roles for the film, which Perry wrote 26 years ago.
“I have waited a quarter of a century to tell this story and now is the perfect time and Netflix is the perfect partner,” Perry said in a statement announcing the film.
Perry will write, direct and produce the pic, which is set from 1937 to 1987. “A Jazzman’s Blues” follows an investigation into an unsolved murder that unveils a story full of forbidden love, deceit and a secret that has been held for 40 years. Michelle Sneed, Tyler Perry Studios’ president of production, will executive produce the project.
The movie, which has been a passion project for Perry since he wrote the script in 1995, will primarily shoot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and debut on Netflix this year.

Perry is being honored for his extensive work on humanitarian and social justice causes, while the MPTF will receive the first Hersholt ever awarded to an organization, an act the AMPAS board had to approve on this one time only basis as MPTF heads towards its 100th of “taking care of our own”.
In the past several years, since the 82nd Oscar year, the Hersholt, Thalberg Award, and Honorary Oscars have been presented at the Governors Awards, a separate ceremony, usually in November, designed to separate these special awards from the regular Oscar ceremony, but the Coronavirus pandemic has upset the normal way of things, including the...

As much as we appreciate a special bird for its sacrifice for our holiday meals, the term "turkeys" has always been associated with things that fail, no matter how hard they try.
We love to eat them, but we don't have any qualms tying them the worst of any discussion, which, in this case, is all about television.
So while you're giving props to the bird on your table, let's talk turkey in another way with the awful programming we're calling TV's Biggest Turkeys.
Coffee & Kareem - Netflix
This Netflix movie heralded a cast including the likes of Ed Helm and Taraji P. Henson. It should've been funny, or at least made the viewer smile.
However, it was unnecessarily explicit and profane with an obnoxious, foul-mouthed 12-year-old, a dopey police officer, and a tired retreaded buddy cop attempt that skirted along the lines of racist Af. It wasn't just bad,...

Crystal Fox, Mehcad Brooks, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Cicely Tyson and Perry star in A Fall From Grace, about a divorced woman (Fox) disheartened since her ex-husband’s affair who feels restored by a new romance. But when secrets erode her short-lived joy, Grace’s vulnerable side turns violent.

Another day, another Netflix original movie. The streaming giant just premiered Tyler Perry’s “A Fall From Grace” over the weekend, which IndieWire senior film critic Eric Kohn called “a trashy Hitchcock riff.” It’s one of about half-a-dozen Netflix original movies premiering in January, and merely a taste of what’s to come throughout 2020.
The studio has now released the first trailer for “Spenser Confidential,” an upcoming action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke, directed by Peter Berg from a script by Sean O’Keefe. It is based on the best-selling novel “Wonderland” by Ace Atkins, and on the Spenser character created by Robert B. Parker. The late Robert Ulrich played the first on-screen version of the character in the “Spenser: For Hire” television series, broadcast on ABC from 1985 until 1988.

Why stay in your lane when you can veer into other roadways with your own turbo-charged vehicles? With “A Fall from Grace,” mogul Tyler Perry swerves back and forth between his usual woman-centered melodrama and a quasi-thriller. Shot over just five days in late 2019,
As is his intriguing way, however, Perry delivers some grace notes with the casting. Crystal Fox is especially compelling when playing the title character in her jailhouse state, defeated and shell-shocked. Over the years, a number of stellar female actors have tithed their time to the church of Tyler Perry. Here it’s Perry regulars Cicely Tyson, in an understated but pivotal turn, touching for its frailty, and Phylicia Rashad as Grace’s deeply supportive best friend, Sarah.
We first learn about Grace Waters from incessant chatter on the car radio as 26-year-old public defender Jasmine Bryant heads to the office. Bresha Webb plays the reluctant...

Tyler Perry is one of popular culture’s biggest contradictions: one of the most prominent African American storytellers in history, he’s a bonafide showman and a sloppy filmmaker, often at the same time. Perry’s prolific output often centers on inane dialogue, mismatched performances, and half-hearted scenarios that feel like they barely made it past the first draft. But whether he’s channeling his now-retired quasi-drag queen Madea or turning up the melodrama, Perry’s workmanlike approach always delivers on his own slapdash terms.
“A Fall From Grace,” Perry’s first feature for Netflix (and his first since apparently killing off Madea last year), encapsulates the essence of the Perry Touch. , the movie turns on a peculiar miscarriage of justice and bizarre courtroom theatrics that make your average legal thriller look like Shakespeare. For that very reason, it’s almost certain to please anyone willing to roll with loose attention to logic.

Tyler Perry's more than 40 films; his past and present deals with Oprah Winfrey's Own and Viacom, respectively; and his relatively new 330-acre Atlanta filming complex, which made him the first African American to fully own a major film production studio, more than prove his power as an entertainment mogul.
Yet, for those who have worked with the multihyphenate on his ever-expanding media empire, his latest release, the dark Netflix thriller A Fall From Grace, is an illustration of not just how the writer, producer, director and actor has mastered his style. It's evidence that still has more ...
