Queen Bey is the new box office queen. “Renaissance,” a concert film written, directed and produced by Beyoncé, topped the domestic box office with $21 million in its opening weekend, slightly ahead of expectations.
These ticket sales rank as one of the best debuts for a concert film, joining the company of Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” (far and away the biggest with $92.9 million), 2008’s “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” ($31.1 million), 2011’s “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and 2009’s “Michael Jackson: This Is It” ($23.2 million).
“Renaissance” provided a tidy box office bounty in what would have otherwise been a bleak kickoff to December. According to its distributor AMC Theatres, it’s the first time in two decades a film has opened to more than $20 million on the weekend following Thanksgiving, which is a notoriously slow time at the movies.

Theater owners, already concerned that ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will lead to another Covid-like shakeup of the release schedule, got an unexpected gift in the form of a Taylor Swift concert movie.
The 165-minute filmed version of her $1 billion-earning “Eras” tour will arrive in North American theaters on Oct. 13 (with previews on Oct. 12). Showtimes for the film, produced with an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, are already selling out in AMC’s Imax and Dolby auditoriums nationwide. Presales shattered the AMC Theaters record with $26 million in the first 24 hours, leading to more showtimes added. Universal’s “The Exorcist: Believer” fled to Oct. 6 to avoid an “ExorSwift” showdown.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” whose $20 (for adults) or $13 (for kids and seniors) ticket price for non-premium screens is a lot cheaper than concert tickets, is positioning itself as the event film of the fall season. The concert film gives the theatrical sector...

Horror will be the headline at the Super Bowl weekend box office, where Paramount's threequel Rings takes on M. Night Shayamalan's holdover hit, Split.
Projections show both films grossing as much as $13 million-$14 million. Paramount is being more conservative, suggesting $10 million-$12 million for Rings.
The Super Bowl remains the most-watched televised event of the year, with moviegoing often taking a pummeling on game day. Miley Cyrus’ Disney Channel alter ego Hannah Montana set more box office records, putting the 16-year-old child star back at number one. Hannah Montana: The Movie made $34 million over the Easter weekend, the biggest family film and the second largest overall for the holiday 3-day. The estimated total is especially impressive considering her audience woke up early this morning to hunt for eggs.
Last year her Best of Both Worlds Concert was the biggest pure 3-D opening and set the record for largest Super Bowl weekend. Now she’s back with a G-rated, semi-autobiographical narrative about the pressures of being a major star. It’s a bittersweet day for Disney, who is celebrating the biggest April opening for the studio while Cyrus continues to state publicly she won’t be back for a sequel. By the time another movie is ready the tweens will have outgrown her any way. My “achy breaky heart” is broken.

Starz Entertainment will help TV audiences make their own 3-D glasses at home and then spend some summer hours with Hannah Montana in 3-D on TV.
Disney's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" will air on Starz in 2-d on July 26 -- when Disney Channel is scheduled to air the TV debut of the 3-D version. Then, Starz on Demand and Starz HD on Demand will begin offering the concert film in 3-D beginning July 27. It also will be scheduled on the Starz channels.
While the film was seen in digital 3-D in theaters, this TV experience will be presented in anaglyph, which means that the images are made up of two color layers, offset from each other to create the feeling of depth when viewed with two-color glasses.
To see the 3-D, viewers can log on to the Starz Web site and learn how to make their 3-D glasses at home. It starts with printing out the outline of the paper frames, along with instructions. Fans will need supplies including poster board, a red permanent marker, blue permanent marker and clear plastic wrapper.
"The tutorial comes across a bit young, but it's meant to be playful and encourage people to do an activity for a what is a passive activity like watching television," said Jonathan Shair, vp network group at Starz Entertainment.
Joe Peixoto, president of worldwide cinema at 3-D provider RealD, pointed to its difference between this distribution model and digital 3-D: "While I don't think the experience even compares to the digital experience, it is what is possible today in television. ... I don't happen to think (anaglyph) is a great experience."
Vince Pace, founder and president of 3-D company Pace and a producer of the "Hannah Montana" movie, said: "We want the primary use to be in its best exhibition form that we possibly can. As long as the project has that as its main goal of getting it out to the public and millions of people, Pace is 100% behind that project. If they want to have fun with it later on or use it in different ways, I consider that is not hurting the overall (3-D) effort. It's just having fun with a medium."
Said Chuck Goldwater, president of 3-D provider Access Integrated Technologies' media services group, "Anytime when content owners find additional ancillary markets and revenue for their product, that can only encourage the production of more content for the theatrical market, where it would benefit from its best and highest-quality presentation."
Starz's Shair said: "There has been movement in the theatrical business to do more 3-D. If Disney starts to do this more with its first-run theatricals, we would take advantage of it and offer it on all our platforms."
"Best of Both Worlds Concert" in 3-D is slated for an Aug. 19 DVD release.
The film opened in digital 3-D theaters in February, grossing more than $65.3 million.

Turning 3-D into a business
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- A call for industry standards for stereoscopic 3-D, both for theatrical release and in the home, was hammered home during a 3-D presentation Wednesday at the Hollywood Post Alliance's annual Technology Retreat.
"It's simply the lack of standards that is preventing the studios from taking content that they have in 3-D and formatting it onto a piece of plastic and having it play back in a player to a television that is 3-D capable," said Alan Bell, executive vp and chief technology officer at Paramount. "Clearly, home video in 3-D is essential to the converging business models."
Wednesday's 3-D session explored how the format is "moving from a science project to a business." During the session, the often-cited advantages of 3-D were applauded, but speakers also identified problems and issues that must be addressed.
Disney's Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which grossed $31.5 million in its opening weekend, was deemed an overwhelming success, and Disney president of distribution Chuck Viane encouraged the retreat audience to proceed with 3-D.
But he emphasized the need for deployment of more 3-D systems, saying: "That we could only have 683 theaters to play 'Hannah Montana' is backward movement in our business. In order for this to succeed, we must be in the thousand-plus range."
But Millard Ochs, president of Warner Bros. International Cinemas, warned 3-D enthusiasts, "We are not motivated to put in more 3-D (systems) until there is more product."
Similarly, Mann Theatres CEO Peter Dobson said: "Does the business model work? So far, no."...

Playdate for film toys
UPDATED 4:07 p.m. PT, Feb. 15
NEW YORK -- Toys based on Warner Bros.' "Speed Racer" and "The Dark Knight", Lucasfilm's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and Marvel's "Hulk" are expected to be the biggest licensed entertainment hits at this year's Toy Fair, but the hottest toys of all might be those that unlock virtual worlds on the Web.
Other film properties expected to make a solid showing at Toy Fair, opening Sunday in Manhattan, are Dream?Works' "Kung Fu Panda", Marvel's "Iron Man", Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" and Disney/ Pixar's "Wall-E".
With "Hannah Montana" hotter than ever and a live-action movie slated for 2009, Disney licensees will showcase product lines that also incorporate the trend toward music-themed toys, sparked not only by "Hannah" and Disney's other tween phenomenon "High School Musical" but also by such music-based video games as "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Star". There also will be toys for "HSM" ahead of the October theatrical release of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."
This week's announcement that Lucasfilm will be releasing an animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" feature Aug. 15, ahead of the anticipated TV series that will air on Cartoon Network and TNT, also sparked excitement about toy lines based on the animated "Star Wars" look. There also will be toy lines based on Paramount's upcoming "Star Trek" movie as well as "Ugly Betty" dolls based on the hit ABC series.
Although the spate of toy recalls that rocked the industry occurred just a few months ago, toy company executives insist that the recalls are having no impact on the excitement level over Toy Fair or on their business with entertainment licensors and retailers.
"We're looking forward, not back, and we're committed to making sure everything we do is safe," said Doug Wadleigh, vp marketing entertainment brands at Mattel, which probably was hardest hit by the recalls.

'Hannah' a growing girl
Hannah had an even bigger weekend than Disney projected.
Final numbers showed "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" grossed $31.1 million from its 683 digital 3-D screens. That's a whopping $45,561 per screen, a record for a wide release of 600 or more playdates.
The extra-dimensional concert film topped the domestic boxoffice rankings this weekend with the fewest-ever engagements by a No. 1 opener. It also rang up the biggest Super Bowl weekend gross ever.
Disney initially planned on playing Hannah for just one week but added another week to runs when it became clear the movie would do outsized business. On Sunday, the distributor said exhibitors can opt to extend the film's engagements beyond two weeks.
The 3-D movie release comes on the heels of the conclusion of a live concert tour by Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana.

Elliott to release 3-D music video
CORRECTED 2:40 p.m. PT Jan. 29
Missy Elliott is going 3-D.
Walt Disney Studios is creating a stereoscopic 3-D music video combining two of her songs featured in the studio's upcoming "Step Up 2 the Streets", which opens Feb. 14. MTV will premiere the video in 3-D on Monday during "TRL". Glasses for home viewing will be distributed via various promotions.

'U2 3D' hopes to ride wave
The 3-D concert feature U2 3D opened in limited release Wednesday on 60 film-based Imax screens in North America.
Meanwhile, the activity surrounding the digital release of this 3-D feature and others signals growing interest in the format but also underscores a concern in the distribution market that scheduling has to be handled with care because of the currently limited number of 3-D-ready digital screens. Estimates suggest that the number of 3-D-ready digital screens in North America is currently around 1,000; these screens of course are also 2-D-capable and are therefore also used to show non-3-D features.
U2 3D is scheduled to go wider and have its digital 3-D opening Feb. 15 on an anticipated 500-600 digital screens.
This would follow the digital 3-D release of Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which will open Feb. 1 for a one-week limited engagement. Hannah Montana is currently expected to open on roughly 680 screens in North America but might reach 700 by the release date.

Disney brings 3-D thunder to 'Bolt'
Disney Feature Animation's Bolt -- previously titled American Dog -- will be released in digital 3-D when it opens Nov. 26, 2008.
"We are going to have fun family 3-D at Thanksgiving," Disney president of domestic distribution Chuck Viane said. "We absolutely believe in the whole concept of 3-D and the enhancement that it brings in the ability to separate us from any of the other mediums."
Bolt is the latest digital 3-D announcement from Disney, which has been a pioneer of the format. The company's digital 3-D releases have included Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons and "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas."
Burton also recently signed a two-picture deal with Disney through which he will direct and produce 3-D features of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Burton's short Frankenweenie. Disney next releases in 3-D the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which will play in theaters Feb. 1-7.
The Hannah Montana release should be available on about 700 screens. "By the time we get to 'Bolt, ' I think you may be looking at somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 potential 3-D screens (domestically)," Viane said.

3-D future still fuzzy
Stakeholders in the 3-D arena believe the upcoming concert films U2 3D and Disney's 3-D Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour signal that future content can be much more than theatrical features.
But all is not rosy in the 3-D universe: Some execs who attended a panel discussion about 3-D on Tuesday at Digital Hollywood at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel have concerns about production.
"I don't think anyone realizes yet what (the potential of 3-D concert films)," said Josh Greer, president of 3-D provider Real D, speaking of the Hannah Montana concert film and the frenzy behind the live performance ticket sales.
"The idea that you go from a venue where you have 5,000 or 7,000 seats to being able to offer 1 million tickets -- I think this is going to have a profound effect on the type of content in theaters. That will also relieve some of the pressure for 3-D content."
But a potential holdup to increased live-action 3-D production is the commercial availability of 3-D cameras, said Bob Mayson, Kodak's GM of digital motion imaging and vp entertainment imaging.
