Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...

Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Exclusive: We understand that Amazon Studios MGM Senior Production & Development Executive Sandino Moya-Smith was unfortunately part of the cuts made by the streaming/theatrical studio this morning.
Moya-Smith, who was involved in development and also feature physical production, was recently working on Doug Liman’s Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC middleweight fighter who ends up working at a rowdy bar in the Florida Keys where things are not as they seem. Moya-Smith was also overseeing Wrecking Crew, the Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa buddy action comedy from Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto. The executive was part of the film teams overseen by Courtenay Valenti and Julie Rapaport.
Moya-Smith was hired during the Jonathan Glickman-run era of the MGM Motion Picture Group, and continued to work throughout the Michael De Luca-Pamela Abdy regime into the studio’s absorption by Amazon. Prior to Amazon’s takeover over MGM,...

A consortium of investors led by Najafi Companies has closed its deal to purchase STX Entertainment, the beleaguered film and television company behind “Bad Moms” and “My Spy.” The sale ends STX’s unhappy union with Eros, the Indian media company that it merged with in 2020. The goal was to go public, which STXEros did, but to little investor fanfare. STX had previously tried and abandoned an effort to go public on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2018, citing unfavorable market conditions.
The cash-strapped independent studio had attracted some 11th-hour interest from Lionsgate, but a potential deal collapsed, leaving Najafi Companies, a Phoenix-based private-equity firm run by Jahm Najafi, as the victor. Najafi is the vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns. Investment firms As Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners helped finance the deal for STX. In December the group bid 173 million for the company.

Film studio STX has placed a subsidiary company containing the rights to Gerard Butler’s 2020 film “Greenland” into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Filed on Feb. 28 in Louisiana by ErosSTX President and General Counsel Noah Fogelson, the motion asks the bankruptcy court for relief in the form of time — time for STX to pay its creditors and to find the capital to co-finance and co-produce a sequel to the disaster movie, co-starring “Homeland” actress Morena Baccarin.
Under the moniker Fso Jones LLC, the bankruptcy filing lists the “Greenland” rights at $50 million in assets and up to $500 million in liabilities. As Variety previously reported, STX is in the midst of a sales process that includes private investment firm The Najafi Companies and, recently, suitors like Lionsgate.
“Fso Jones is the entity that owns the global distribution rights in the sequel to our film ‘Greenland’ which had tremendous success both domestically and throughout the international markets.

Lionsgate is in discussions to acquire some or all of STX Entertainment, the seven-year-old company founded by veteran producer Robert Simonds, insiders familiar with the matter told Variety. It’s an 11th hour wrinkle in the studio’s planned sale to a private equity player.
Talks began late last year, according to sources, after STX had secured a buyer in The Najafi Companies, an investment firm run by Jahm Najafi, the vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns. In addition to Lionsgate, several other players are said to be bidding on STX though it’s unclear which suitor is in the lead (or if any substantially exceed Najafi’s offer).
A Lionsgate spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. An STX spokesperson had no comment.
At the end of 2021, STX was up against a wall to secure an outright buyer after attempting to sell off its film library — which includes titles like Jennifer Lopez’s “Hustlers,...

The McConnaissance may have tapered off a little bit in recent years, but for a spell it felt like the resurgent Matthew McConaughey could do no wrong. Having spent the better part of a decade starring in a series of forgettable romantic comedies and becoming better known for taking his shirt off than his acting abilities, he made the conscious effort to tackle the most challenging roles he could find.
That resulted in an incredible hot streak of performances that saw him win widespread acclaim in the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Mud, Magic Mike, an Academy Award winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street and Interstellar. Nobody could keep up that level of consistency forever, though, and sure enough, the critical and commercial disappointments eventually followed. Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

The full list of everything that’s coming to Netflix in October has been released today and as we’re facing the prospect of a Halloween spent at home, the streaming site is making sure that we’ve got more than enough spooky content to keep us occupied. In fact, there’s a huge amount of new movies and TV shows arriving on the service next month as part of the “Netflix and Chills” season.
October 1st also delivers a lot of great newly licensed content, too, which you won’t want to miss. Sticking with the Halloween theme, though, the haul features a few horrors/thrillers including Cape Fear, House of 1000 Corpses and You Have Always Lived in the Castle. Then, on the 2nd, new original movie Vampires vs. the Bronx lands. And skipping ahead to the 7th, be sure to catch Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, Hubie Halloween.

For his feature film debut, Hollywood producer Bruce Nachbar chose a way which is quite unusual, making an independent film shot in Japan with a Japanese cast. Produced with the support of crowdfunding, “To the North”, which he shot on a budget of $72,000, Nachbar regards his second film as a director as a “test case”, according to an interview he gave to the Japan Times in November 2018. He wanted to prove that you “can make a Japanese film that will have quality and a great story that people will want to see for the budgets that they have” in Japan. The result is, in many ways, a typical Japanese independent movie, following the well known blend of coming-of-age drama and road movie, dealing with themes such as growing up, friendship and first love. While “To the North” my not tread on new ground thematically and stylistically, it is nevertheless a solid effort,...

In the past seven years, seven high-profile movies about slavery have been released, the most recent being Harriet, chronicling the extraordinary life of slave liberator Harriet Tubman. The others are The Birth of a Nation (2016), Free State of Jones (2016), Freedom (2014), 12 Years a Slave (2013), Django Unchained (2012) and Lincoln (2012). I’m conflicted over this abundance of cultural sensitivity because, while there’s enormous good that comes from it, there’s also the usual threat of knee-jerk backlash that can set back African Americans.

Patti Röckenwagner is leaving Stx Entertainment where she has served as the company’s chief brand officer. She announced her departure in a memo to staff, in which she said she was departing for “another opportunity.” The exit is an amicable one.
Röckenwagner joined Stx in 2016 as its chief communications officer before being promoted to her current post in 2018. It hasn’t always been an easy job. Stx was founded in 2015 with the goal of disrupting the entertainment landscape by making mid-budget movies more cheaply than major studios. Its track record has been mixed. The company scored hits with “Bad Moms” and this year’s Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart dramedy “The Upside,” but other projects such as “Mile 22” and “Free State of Jones” have been misfires. Stx also had a setback when its long planned initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange was abandoned amid turbulence in mainland Chinese equity markets.

Where were you the first time you heard “McConaissance”? The term went viral between 2011 and 2014 as Matthew McConaughey transitioned away from light romantic-comedies to more serious fare and/or auteur collaborations with “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Bernie,” “Killer Joe,” “Mud,” “Magic Mike,” and more. Suddenly, McConaughey was earning the best reviews of his career and turning into the most exciting actor in Hollywood.
The “McConaissance” hit its peak in 2014 when McConaughey’s role in “Dallas Buyers Club” won him the Oscar for best actor. At the same time, McConaughey was dazzling television with his stellar work on HBO’s “True Detective,” which netted him an Emmy nomination later that year. Stx Entertainment, as has long been suggested would be the case, has filed for an Ipo on the Hong Kong stock exchange. If accepted, the proposal would make Bob Simonds’ burgeoning studio the first U.S.-based entertainment company to go public on the Hong Kong exchange.
The company was valued at $1.5B last year, however, it has been reported previously that the company could be valued as high as $3.5B after the Ipo. Since its inception, Stx has been modeling itself to become a major entertainment company along the lines of Viacom and this is yet another step in the path to achieve that goal.
Stx Entertainment CEO Simonds has been hinting that they might go public for some two and a half years now when China’s Tencent and Hong Kong telecom giant Pccw led an investment round in Stx with the specific aim of building a studio.

“The Happytime Murders,” the film in question, seems certain to shatter quite a number of childhood memories and taboos, and presents the newbie studio with perhaps its best chance at major box office success. McCarthy produces and headlines the hard R comedy, which is directed by Brian Henson, the head of the Jim Henson Company and a puppeteer in his own right. Footage from the film featured puppets offering oral sex to McCarthy, cursing like teamsters, and, in one uproarious scene, ejaculating all over a dingy office. The whole thing makes “Ted” look like “Fraggle Rock.”
Since launching in 2014, Stx has struggled at times to find its footing. It scored with the “Bad Moms” movies and “The Foreigner,” but other pictures such as “Free State of Jones...

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we look back at Gary Ross‘ directorial debut and instant classic, ‘Plesantville‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Pleasantville (1998)
Director/Screenplay: Gary Ross
As the nation heads towards another election shortly, the national debate has become strikingly philosophical. Phrases like “Family Values” and “The Role of Government” always come up, never has the divide, in my memory, been so drastic. It’s at times like these, that I find myself thinking about Gary Ross’s film ‘Pleasantville‘. Ross has one of the best resumes for someone with so few credits. Ross became known for co-writing the film ‘Big‘, which earned him an Oscar nomination, as did his second screenplay ‘Dave‘. He made the sports biopic, ‘Seabiscuit‘, the animated film “The Tale of Despereaux” and more recently, the ‘The Hunger Games‘ film as well as the Civil...
