Ridley Scott’s much-awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 film has fans anticipating the celebrated director’s mass spectacle. Gladiator 2 will feature the Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal and his journey as an older Lucius who discovers his royal patronage.
However, fans of the original movie would be shocked to know that Scott once contemplated bringing his older hero back. Years ago, the director had envisioned a script for the sequel in which he planned to bring Russell Crowe back from the dead, a daring concept. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out, but he didn’t give up on his dreams for the sequel for years to come.

It’s been announced that Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Brendan Fraser (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) have joined the cast of Assassination, a mystery thriller that reveals a new take on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Barry Levinson (Rain Man) will direct from a script by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross), with Levinson and Sam Bromell (Elvis). Al Pacino (House of Gucci) is also attached to star in the project.
Assassination centers around Dorothy Kilgallen, “one of the most famous voices in media at the time. When Dorothy suspects that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, she uses her fame and influence to find the real killer of JFK. Part murder mystery, part film noir, Dorothy’s journey will put her up against the CIA, Mafia bosses, and the FBI, all who would love nothing more than to make her and this story disappear.

At this point, we all know that for better or for worse, Lady Gaga loves going Method for her roles. She claimed that for her role as Ally in "A Star is Born" — the role that won her an Oscar for best original song thanks to the showstopper "Shallow" — she lived in the role for years. More recently, she changed her singing voice and walked the set of "Joker: Folie á Deux" as Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. In 2022, for the biopic "House of Gucci," Lady Gaga took "the Method," where you fully embody your character even when the cameras are off super seriously, and even spoke in an Italian accent for her role as Patrizia Reggiani. Apparently, she also refused to speak to one of her co-stars as a result of her approach to Patrizia.

October 25 began with new music from Lady Gaga. She released her new song, “Disease,” the lead single from her next album, due in 2025. Watch the lyric video above.
Gaga hasn’t released a studio album of entirely new material since 2020’s platinum record “Chromatica,” which produced the number-one, Grammy-winning single “Rain on Me,” her duet with Ariana Grande. But fans have gotten their Gaga fix many times in-between albums. Since “Chromatica” she has had starring roles in the films “House of Gucci” (2021) and “Joker: Folie a Deux” (2024), and she even released a “Joker” companion album titled “Harlequin,” which includes mostly covers. She recorded the 2022 love ballad “Hold My Hand” for the blockbuster film “Top Gun: Maverick.” And this past August she came out with the single “Die with a Smile,” a collaboration with Bruno Mars that has been a fixture in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

With every new Ridley Scott film we're treated to a new Ridley Scott press run, which essentially means a ton of delightfully grumpy quotables are headed our way. "Gladiator 2," set to debut on November 22, 2024, has been no different. The British filmmaking legend told Empire magazine (via Deadline) that he has a "good relationship" with Russell Crowe, star of the original "Gladiator," before adding that Crowe shouldn't "start b***hing about how he wasn't consulted" for the sequel because "He's dead!". Scott also gave "Gladiator 2" star Paul Mescal some brutally terse advice for the highly-anticipated sequel, essentially telling him to immediately stop being nervous about fronting such a gargantuan production.
All of this is par for the course with Scott, who despite his own crotchetiness has been a Hollywood mainstay for decades now. That doesn't mean he hasn't endured some rocky moments in his impressively prolific career, however. Still...

While 2019 saw the monumental success of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, it was a spinoff of the iconic Batman villain that became the most profitable film of that year with its miniscule budget of $65 million being matched with a worldwide run of over $1.07 billion. ‘Joker’ (2019) was the talk of the cinema community as it was the first r- rated comic book film to receive such attention and profit and has since been in the minds of cinema enthusiasts and normal movie goers alike. As any successful movie goes in modern times, a sequel had to come and it did this past weekend with ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ (2024). With Todd Phillips returning as the director and Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the titular character, we see another venture into a far more real and depressing look at Gotham than any other interpretation of it has shown.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Al Pacino is opening up about going broke a little over ten years ago.
The 84-year-old actor shared in his new memoir, “Sonny Boy,” that he had a corrupt account and lost millions of dollars. That account eventually went to prison for their crimes.
Keep reading to find out more…
In his book, the Oscar winner shared in 2011, he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.”
After the accountant’s mismanagement of his finances and over spending, Al says he “went broke.”
“In this business, when you make $10 million dollars for a film, it’s not $10 million. Because after the lawyers, and the agents, and the publicist, and the government, it’s not $10 million, it’s four and half in your pocket,” he wrote. “But you’re living above that because you’re high on the hog.

Is there room at the best picture table for more than one “part two?”
This year, several installments in established franchises are banging on the Academy’s door, hoping for a coveted slot in the category. With no clear frontrunner, this could be the season that more than one sequel secures a place in the race. That has happened only once, in 2022 (“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick”).
The Oscars have long hesitated to embrace anything with a Roman numeral affixed to it. Historically, only nine sequels have been nominated for best picture: “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (1945), “The Godfather Part II” (1974), “The Godfather Part III” (1990), “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Toy Story 3” (2010), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022). Just two — “Godfather 2” and “Return of the King” — won.

Jo Nesbo is not merely a “serial” author he is a “spree writer” who mass produces crime novels, children’s books and short stories. Some of those are converted into movies already, some of them even good, including Morten Tyldum’s 2011 thriller Headhunters, some of them bad to the bone, such as Thomas Alfredson’s 2017 “Scandi-noir” procedural The Snowman. With five more Nesbo-written titles for film and television in various stages of production, may the whole Nordic Pantheon and the fallen heroes of Valhalla help us all. The newest adaptation of his work is an Amazon-MGM production that has recently landed on Prime Video.
At first glance, it seems like a no-brainer: an adaptation of a prolific and somewhat “cinematic” writer by a couple of somewhat reputable screenwriters – Bridge Of Spies’ Matt Charman and House Of Gucci’s Roberto Bentivegna – set as the English-language debut of the “festival darling”, Ivorian filmmaker.

Adam Driver has taken on many diverse roles in films such as Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023). However, for mainstream fans, his portrayal of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, in the Star Wars franchise remains his most iconic role.
While the Sequel Trilogy had its share of clumsy moments, Driver’s performance stood out, and Kylo Ren is still regarded as one of the most significant characters in the trilogy. This lasting impact explains why discussions about Kylo Ren persist.
One key aspect of Kylo’s character in the films was his connection to Darth Vader, a relationship that was largely left unexplored. However, a recent Star Wars story has finally delved deeper into the origins of this connection, shedding light on the mysterious bond between Kylo and Vader.

Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie à Deux and Adam Driver’s Megalopolis are currently locked in a box office competition. Both films were released a week apart, but their theatrical performances couldn’t be more different from one another. It’s no secret that Joker 2, despite its appalling reviews, is riding on the success of a huge IP and its 2019 predecessor, Joker‘s success.

Four years later, Al Pacino is opening up about his near-death experience with Covid-19.
The Academy Award winner revealed his “pulse was gone” after he had a bad reaction to steroids while being treated for a life-threatening Coronavirus infection back in 2020.

Pacino recounted, “What happened was, I felt not good — unusually not good. Then I had a fever, and I was getting dehydrated and all that. So I got someone to get me a nurse to hydrate me. When the production for "Gladiator II" was announced, most fans of the first film were pretty excited. 2000's "Gladiator" is widely hailed as one of the best historical epics of its time, telling a classic hero's journey about a betrayed Roman general rising through the gladiator ranks to avenge his wife and child. From the lovely Hans Zimmer score (where you can see the blueprints for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" soundtrack) to Joaquin Phoenix's delightfully villainous performance, this movie was an instant classic. The fact that it's taken 24 years for a sequel to release is pretty strange by modern Hollywood standards.
But as the first few trailers have come out, the excitement for "Gladiator II" has abated a bit. Fans are concerned that the trailers do the classic Hollywood mistake of giving way too much of the movie's plot away, an error made worse by how the story...

Lady Gaga will likely take on her first supporting actress Oscar run for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” But how far can “Mother Monster” take a movie with such abysmal reviews?
“Joker: Folie à Deux” picks up with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his violent crimes. As he grapples with his fractured identity, Arthur finds love with fellow inmate Lee (Gaga) and begins embracing the music that has always played inside his chaotic mind.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” including its ending.]
Yes, “Joker: Folie à Deux” is a mess. Yes, it is a lackluster follow-up to 2019’s “Joker” that made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide. Let’s just say that Joaquin Phoenix definitely won’t be winning a Best Actor Oscar for this sequel.
But, what “Joker: Folie à Deux” does do is position itself as a so-baffling-it’s-amazing soon-to-be cult classic. And this also might not be the last of this particular “Joker” universe created by director and co-writer Todd Phillips, as the film serves a trio of origin stories for other villains, for better or for worse.
Sure, Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is dead, but as we soon learn, he never really was The Joker after all. Arthur is an empathic, mentally ill character who became a larger-than-life symbol, so much so that he couldn...

Lady Gaga is singing a different tune about playing Harleen “Lee” Quinzel in musical sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
Gaga told People that while characters have stuck with her long after wrapping previous films “A Star Is Born” (2018) and “House of Gucci” (2021), she is now “in a new place” with her approach to acting.
“I didn’t bring her home with me, for sure,” Gaga said of playing the famed Harley Quinn. However, when asked if she left the character behind after the production, she added, “I didn’t, really.”
Gaga continued, “You fall in love with the characters that you play. I always have, anyway.”
The Oscar and Grammy winner admitted that “sometimes” she has “had trouble leaving” characters, but she is trying to change that.

On the eve of “Joker: Folie à Deux” opening in theaters on Friday, October 4, awards pundits everywhere are wondering about the film’s chances at upcoming kudos like the Oscars and Golden Globes. One of its strongest contenders is Lady Gaga, whose manipulative character Harleen “Lee” Quinzel sings and dances her way into Arthur “Joker” Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) heart. Even though critics are divided over the sequel, there’s good news for Gaga: Gold Derby’s Golden Globe predictions have her reaping a bid for Best Supporting Actress.
As of this writing, Gaga enjoys odds of 13/1, which places her in the Top 6 for the category. Her closest competitors are currently Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) at 37/10 odds, Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”) at 9/2 odds, Selena Gomez (“Emilia Perez”) at 13/2 odds, Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”) at 13/2 odds, and Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) at 9/1 odds.

Is everyone ready for an October packed full of sequels? Because that’s exactly what we’re getting this week, with not one, but two new sequels! Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Warner Bros. delivered the biggest hit of September with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and they hope to follow that up with “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the oddly-titled sequel to the 2019 global hit “Joker,” which grossed $1 billion worldwide with $335 million of that coming from North America after a $96.2 million opening. Before “Deadpool and Wolverine” was released this past summer, it was the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Director Todd Phillips returns with Joaquin Phoenix once again playing the role of Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, for which he won the Oscar in 2020, while Zazie Beetz is also back. The big addition to the cast though is pop superstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, her first major...

This year’s awards race has no strikes, no pandemic and no postponed or canceled awards shows.
At this point, it also has no real frontrunners.
So far, 2024 has been a down year at the box office and a confusing year on the film festival circuit. Before the fall festivals, the Oscar race was something of a waiting game, with everybody curious about the potential contenders that would be unveiled in Venice, Telluride and Toronto.
And now that those festivals have run their course, it’s a different kind of waiting game: waiting to see which films can start feeling like serious contenders rather than long-to-medium shots.
There’s no big commercial movie out there with the clout that “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” showed last year. And no indie film that seems to have the buzz to become this year’s “Coda” or “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Instead, the race...

Adam Driver. The man known for starring in several iconic movies like Ferrari, House of Gucci, and, Megalopolis, had some opinions to share about modern movies. Unfortunately, it seems just a little bit hypocritical.

Movies after 2020 have been dubbed as ‘modern movies’ as the world explored crazy subjects and ideas to make them into films. Francis Ford Coppola’s recently released Megalopolis is an example of just that.
Adam Driver’s Opinion About Modern Movies Is Not Exactly Right
Well, of course. It’s an opinion and Adam Driver is free to share his thoughts. However, it seems that these statements seem just enough contradictory with his career to make the people question him.

Francis Ford Coppola’s next epic is here, and he’s amassed a pretty huge cast to bring it to life. And odds are, you’re going to recognize quite a few of those faces.
Now in theaters, “Megalopolis” is a modern retelling of the Roman Empire, starring Adam Driver as the man who’s trying to build it. Cesar Catalina (Driver) has a vision for a utopia built with a brand new element that he discovered and won a Nobel prize for. But not everyone wants to see him succeed in doing so.
It’s a pretty thick plot, so we won’t pick that apart here. For now, we’re just going to help you place some of those faces on screen.
Here are all the major players in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”

I love movies like Killer Heat, not just the movie Killer Heat. This type of knockoff fiction can be recycled and found in any big-box department store, where people gobble it up for summer reading. The film offers virtually nothing new on the subject.
Even from the clothes, setting, and moments of shadowy cinematography. So, studios do what they do: cast attractive leads and saturate the story with a faux-noir style, which many will mistake for originality.
The film is standard by the numbers, dusting off the playbook and following the step-by-step mystery genre production. I almost think the talented cast signed on for the Greek island location entirely.

Could you imagine an Oscars ceremony without the glitz, glamour and a heavy dose of pop stardom? Can you imagine the ratings?
Well, the Oscars could get much more musical. This awards season, brace yourself for a “pop star era,” with music icons such as Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande all competing to receive acting attention from the Academy Awards, and in the same supporting actress race no less.
Pop stars have long dominated the stage, captivating millions with their music. However, some megastars have proven they can conquer more than the Billboard charts. Take legendary artist Cher, for instance — the “Goddess of Pop” didn’t just give us hits like “Believe,” she also took home an Oscar for best actress for her unforgettable role as Italian widow and bookkeeper Loretta Castorini in the 1987 rom-com classic “Moonstruck.” That crossover has also come from other genre artists.

If you’re gonna have someone like Lady Gaga star in your movie, it only makes sense to have her contribute, in some way, to the soundtrack. Indeed, when she did A Star is Born, Gaga received a Best Actress Oscar nomination, but she also won the award for her contribution to the soundtrack, “Shallow.” While Joker: Folie a Deux is being called a jukebox musical, in that most of the songs are covers of already existing tracks, Gaga has nonetheless recorded a ton of music inspired by the film and the character she plays (Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn), and now has announced a companion album called Harlequin, which is a pretty apropos title.

Sure, Steven Soderbergh and Steven Spielberg work fast, so does Guy Ritchie, but none of them are 86 years old and Ridley Scott is arguably the oldest director working at the pace he does, a film every two years at least. But that clip has sped up recently. 2021 delivered two films in one year, “The Last Duel” and “House Of Gucci,” 2023 gave us “Napoleon” and Scott returns in 2024 with the long-awaited sequel to “Gladiator” with “Gladiator II.”

Director Ridley Scott told Deadline in 2023 that he’d been offered to direct superhero movies, but that it wasn’t for him, after telling them in 2021 that modern superhero movies are “no fucking good” and “boring as shit.” He said he’d already directed at least 3 superheroes: Ellen Ripley in Alien, Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, and Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator. “The difference is,” Scott said, “the f*cking stories are better.”
The case can certainly be made that Ridley Scott has brought some of the best stories to screen that we’ve ever seen, and Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator are among them, but what about his more modern fare? Are the stories for House of Gucci, The Last Duel, and Napoleon “better”? Ridley Scott hasn’t had a movie achieve both critical and commercial success since 2015’s The Martian, which begs the question: Wtf happened to Ridley Scott?...

Great Gwildor’s beard! Industry insider Jeff Sneider is sending shockwaves through Grayskull this Wednesday by saying Jared Leto is reportedly getting offered the role of Skeletor in Amazon’s upcoming Masters of the Universe. Bumblebee‘s Travis Knight directs the live-action adaptation of Mattel’s beloved action figure franchise from a script by Chris Butler, with Nicholas Galitzine leading the film as He-Man, Camila Mendes as the virtuous warrior Teela, and Alison Brie as the villainess Evil-Lyn.
The InSneider says Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto could play the skull-faced, blue-skinned thorn in He-Man’s side. Leto would command his army of iconic henchmen while shaking his fist and cackling, wielding influence and magic like the malevolent sorcerer fans know him to be. In his relentless pursuit of power, Skeletor longs to learn the secrets of Castle Grayskull and conquer the land of Eternia to feed his ego and seemingly limitless power.

While Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill used their thespian skills to perform as the famed Clown Prince of Crime from Batman’s world, later actors who would portray the Joker are embodying the role in more method ways. “Joker: Folie à Deux” director Todd Phillips recently told Variety for a cover story that the goal in making the anticipated sequel to 2019’s “Joker” was “to make it feel like it was made by crazy people. The inmates are running the asylum.” It appears the director got his wish in part from his leading star Joaquin Phoenix, who would throw out the script on a whim and gather with Phillips and co-star Lady Gaga in his trailer to rewrite entire scenes from the ground up.
“We’d very often meet in Joaquin’s trailer and sometimes we would just tear the script up and start all over,” Gaga recently told Vanity Fair for her own cover story. “It was a really cool, liberating process.”
Phillips confirmed Gaga’s story and told the publication: “My line about Joaquin is that he’s the tunnel at the end of the light.

The Italian government will this week announce major changes to its film and TV tax credit system aimed at boosting local productions and producers and ensuring more Italian stories get told on screen. The changes come after a year of uncertainty that has left many productions in limbo.
Under the new rules, international co-productions will face an €18 million ($19.7 million) cap on tax credit payouts for projects where at least 30 percent of the production is made in Italy. Local productions will be capped at €9 million ($10 million). The overall fund for film and audiovisual investments in 2024 remains unchanged at approximately €700 million ($782 million).
The change is designed to boost Italian TV and movies and encourage visiting international productions to focus more on Italian stories, like Michael Mann’s Ferrari, about the life of the legendary car designer, starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival, or...

It’s undeniable: Ridley Scott has made some of the greatest films of all time. Alien. Blade Runner. Gladiator. Thelma & Louise, just to name a few. And he’s been on one hell of a streak recently, refusing to slow down after decades in the business, wrangling major movies like The Last Duel, House Of Gucci, and Napoleon in the last few years alone. But now – finally – nearly 25 years since he last conjured the Colosseum and the decadent delights of Ancient Rome, he’s about to unleash the film that fans have waited decades for. Yes, it’s time to step back into the arena for Gladiator II – and according to the filmmaker himself, he hasn’t messed it up.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made,” Scott tells Empire in the world-exclusive Gladiator II issue. Though, he concedes, he has made several other great movies. “One of the best things.

Method acting—Hollywood’s high-stakes game of “How Deep Can You Dive?”—has been the talk of the industry for decades. By definition, it’s the acting technique where performers dive headfirst into their roles, trying to become one with their characters.
But let’s face it, this approach has been more polarizing than pineapple on pizza, with industry bigwigs split down the middle. So, here’s the million-dollar question: is Lady Gaga the Method acting queen, or is Joaquin Phoenix still holding the crown? Well, Todd Phillips has the lowdown.

According to the director, who has worked closely with both thespians on the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, Gaga’s dedication sometimes even leaves Phoenix in her shadow. Phillips revealed that the adherence these two powerhouse performers brought to the table is the stuff of legends.

If the idea of "Joker 2" as a Broadway musical sounds absolutely wild or even upsetting to you, that's fair. Just know that director Todd Phillips actually considered this as a possibility — before logistics got in the way.
In an interview with Variety about the upcoming sequel "Joker: Folie á Deux," Phillips — an Oscar nominee for the first film — said that he and star Joaquin Phoenix thought about bringing Arthur Fleck's next adventure to the stage, but reconsidered when they thought about whether or not Phoenix would actually want to commit to such a thing. "When we started really thinking about it, we realized it takes four years to put something like that together. And is Joaquin really going to give six months of his life to do that every night onstage?" Phillips told the outlet. "Then we thought about doing it at [the Carlyle, a famous New York hotel that sometimes hosts performances] as sort of a smaller thing. But Covid hit.

With “House of the Dragon” closing out its second season last week, it might be time to look elsewhere to get your dosage of dragons and family drama.
Showrunner Ryan Condal revealed in a Monday press conference that writing for Season 3 was already underway, with prep set to begin this fall and production aiming to start up in early 2025.
Though Condal said he hears fans who are hoping the “Game of Thrones” spin-off series could release every summer, he pointed to the massive scale of the battles and apologized for the wait. That said, a hopeful outlook could see “House of the Dragon” airing in late 2025, but 2026 is looking more likely.
In the meantime, there’s plenty of movies that might scratch your “House of the Dragon” itch, from fantasy classics like “Lord of the Dragons” to dragon-filled action flicks like “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “How to Train Your Dragon,...
