‘One of the best horror movies of 2023’
Lionel Ray Green
Inspired by true events comes Sorry, Charlie, an unapologetically terrifying horror from director Colton Tran (The Bell Keeper, The Sex Lives of College Girls). The film is out now on UK Digital platforms including to rent/buy on Amazon Prime Video from Miracle Media.
Kathleen Kenny (African Giants) gives a standout performance as a survivor of a brutal attack by a violent serial murderer and rapist labelled ‘The Gentleman’ who lures unsuspecting women from their homes with a recording of a crying baby.
Following the devastating assault, helpline volunteer Charlie (Kenny) now lives a reclusive life, having cut herself off from her family and friends, haunted by the trauma.
Despite her attacker supposedly arrested and behind bars, Charlie can’t shake the feeling that she’s not alone. Isolated and afraid, her paranoia grows. Is there someone stalking her, or...

Medical shows are always popular with audiences; the same is true of most comedy series.
St. Denis Medical is a new comedy set to premiere in 2024, providing a good mix of both.

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Exclusive: Grey Sloan is losing a surgical intern. Midori Francis, who has played Mika Yasuda on Grey’s Anatomy for the last two seasons, is departing the medical drama as a series regular, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Francis is in negotiations to return next season to wrap up the story of her character.
I hear this was an amicable decision. Francis had been looking to branch out for the next step of her career and signed with WME earlier this year. She is the second Grey’s Anatomy series regular who will be departing early next season, along with Jake Borelli who has played Levi Schmitt for seven seasons. Reps for ABC and ABC Signature, which produces Grey’s Anatomy, declined comment.

“The dream,” Belden said, “has always been to work with a core group of clients that I absolutely adore as artists and as human beings and to be able to produce projects with and for those clients. With this company I get to focus on exactly that and I couldn’t be more excited.”
Belden explained that the name Death Wish is “a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that it’s harder than ever to be working in the entertainment industry right now,” underscoring at the same time that he “couldn’t be more optimistic about what the future holds for the up and coming generation of actors, writers, directors, and producers that I work with.”
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those at his former company.

1999 was the apex of teen girl cinema, with over a dozen new releases now hailed in "girl world" as seminal classics. But that year also brought the financial juggernaut of "American Pie," and Hollywood realized that there was serious money to be made with boy-centered sex comedies. Pair that with the horrific tragedy at Columbine High School, and suddenly problems like a boy pretending to like you for a payday felt frivolous, and edgier fare felt too dangerous to be entertaining. Teen girl movies didn't outright disappear, but they certainly fell out of popularity and became niche, "chick flick" fare more than ever. The genre has never fully recovered and continues to fight for respect and relevance 25 years later. Fortunately, there have been culture-shifting pop cultural juggernauts that remind Hollywood (and society at large) that teen girls are and will forever be the true tastemakers.

Well, they did it. Since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019, HBO has faced persistent questions, year in and year out, over how it will survive without its most profitable franchise. The scrutiny died down a bit in 2022, after “House of the Dragon” debuted to dragon-sized numbers, but the network’s exclusive focus on its first spinoff left a few doubters unsatisfied. “Ok, sure,” they conceded. “You kept the franchise going. But what happens next? The scale of the production still makes it unreasonable to expect new episodes every year — why not green light more shows? Aren’t you leaving money on the table? Shouldn’t we be getting a new edition of ‘Game of Thrones’ every year, every six months, or every quarter?”
Last year proved HBO could survive just fine without a “Walking Dead”-flood of production from its tentpole, and now, as we get ready for a more-or-less full 2024 slate of HBO shows,...

Almost exactly one year after HBO Max returned to Prime Video, Max is now also available on YouTube’s streaming hub as well.
There was a time when the erstwhile streaming service known as HBO Max was pulled from non-company-owned platforms in an effort by WarnerMedia to keep all of the streaming revenue (and data) generated from the service to itself. After 5 million people reportedly signed up for the service via Prime Video Channels following its May 2020 launch, HBO Max left Prime Video in August 2021. When Marlee Matlin began her career 35 years ago, she says there was “nothing” in terms of accessibility in the awards industry space. But that’s begun to change, especially following her film Coda’s best picture win in 2022, including at the 2023 Oscars, where she saw a “significant improvement.”
