Exclusive: Will Peltz (Unfriended), Sarah Dumont (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and Sydelle Noel (Glow) have signed on to star alongside Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Katherine Hughes and Josh Plasse in the horror-thriller Man’s Son, with Voltage Pictures coming aboard to launch international sales ahead of the upcoming Marché du Film.
The XYZ Films title from director Remy Grillo centers on a young couple (Hughes and Plasse) hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. When they choose an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality, until they find themselves intertwined in an occult, sinister plot led by King and Grillo’s characters.
Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the script, which is inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert, with production to kick off in Yucca Valley, California this month.

David and Jessica Oyelowo have signed a TV overall deal with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment under their Yoruba Saxon production banner, Variety has learned.
Under the deal, David is attached to star in and executive produce a series about legendary Old West lawman Bass Reeves. Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.
“The stories Jess and I want to tell are boundary-busting and full of folks the likes of whom we have seldom seen on screen,” Oyelowo said. “The extraordinary story of Bass Reeves exemplifies just that. Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

Magnet have just picked up the rights to the Michael Nickle’s directed Playback. The movie stars Christian Slater as well as Toby Hemmingway, Johnny Pacar and Ambyr Childers and is set for a release through Magnet’s Ultra VOD in February of 2012. It will hit other VOD channels in March. I had a look at the trailer earlier, and have to say it looks quite promising. I’m just hoping Slater can keep his over-acting in check.
While digging into their town’s infamous past, a group of high school students unwittingly unlock a dark secret, unleashing an evil spirit that takes possession of its victims. In addition to Slater, the film stars Toby Hemingway, Johnny Pacar and Ambyr Childers.

Magnet is proving to be a savior of small genre releases. Without them, we might not have been able to see "Hobo With A Shotgun," "13 Assassins," "I Saw the Devil," "Black Death," "Centurion" and "Bronson." So many delights! I haven't seen the film, but I'd like to, and that's the whole point. Australian actress Melissa George clearly enjoys films with an edgy, sinister atmosphere.
After making her screen debut in Alex Proyas's 1998 sci-fi flick Dark City, she went on to appear in such releases as The Amityville Horror, Turistas, Derailed, 30 Days of Night, The Betrayed and, most recently, the temporally-tormented Triangle in 2009.
Her next role sees her on the edge quite literally in the mountaineering thriller A Lonely Place To Die, directed by Julian Gilbey (Rise of the Footsoldier).
It has its European premiere in London on August 29 as the closing feature of Film4's horror festival Frightfest, and will then be released in cinemas on September 9.
Joining Melissa George in the cast are Ed Speleers (Eragon), Eamonn Walker (Unbreakable), Karel Roden (RocknRolla), Sean Harris (Harry Brown), and Kate Magowan (Stardust).

Back in 2005, director Amanda Gusack (The Betrayed) put together a horror film called "In Memorium" on a tiny budget. The film appeared at several film festivals, where it garnered critical praise, but the filmmakers opted to shelve it after failing to find an offer that would cover their selling costs. Now thanks to the popularity of "Paranormal Activity," the movie has become in high-demand, despite the fact that "Paranormal" is considered a rip-off of "In Memorium" and not the other way around. To get the film to the public, the filmmakers have decided to release the movie independently later this year through a paid 30-day-rental stream on IndieFlix. To get people excited, a 16-minute opening scene has appeared on the official website. The clip will stay on there all day Halloween (October 31st) and will then be swapped out for the release date. With the success of Paranormal Activity , you can expect to hear about another dozen or so similar projects. Just this morning, we did a news post on a UK project titled The Possession of David O'Reilly , which bares a resemblance to Oren Peli's sleeper hit. Ever heard of In Memorium ? The low-budget indie pic starring Erik McDowell, Johanna Watts, Levi Powell and Mary Portser dates back to 2005, a few years before Paranormal Activity . Written and directed by Amanda Gusack, this cinéma vérité film follows Dennis Wade, a young film student diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides to document his illness only to capture something else on tape. Director Amanda Gusack gave us the horror film The Betrayed last year, which starred Melissa George (The Amityville Horror) and Oded Fehr (The Mummy, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) in a tale of psychological deception.
Before that film, though, she made a microbudget film called In Memorium that folks are now likening to Oren Peli’s spontaneous success Paranormal Activity. The film premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival in 2005, but has still not seen a release.
Now, with the success of Paranormal Activity, the film is starting to see the light of day through some clips that display a film very similar to Paranormal Activity’s style. Check them out below, and hopefully we’ll have a review of the film up soon enough, so if you have a craving for more Paranormal Activity-esque scares, you might just have an outlet for them!

The low-cost spooker Paranormal Activity has proven to be quite a phenomenon. It’s rare that a film can be considered good when it takes place in basically only one room. This isn’t one of those times…it’s just rare. The Betrayed is a thriller, but it’s terribly hard to be thrilled when you can see every angle of the room at all times. The door that separates our girl from our villains is made of glass, so you can always see someone coming. Of course, because of lighting you see the person’s larger-then-life shadow approaching a few moments ahead. Which can be scary. It wasn’t here, but again…just mentioning.
Some productions have done the one room thing well. 12 Angry Men was a movie that was interesting from beginning to end and it took place in a jury room. A special episode of the big 90s show Homicide: Life on the Street took place entirely in...
