Now that Jonathan Majors appears in two Netflix movies, Da 5 Bloods and , which performance do you prefer? Let’s unpack how these two roles compare and contrast.
Majors plays David, the loyal and compassionate son of former Vietnam soldier Paul (Delroy Lindo), in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and a bitter, wronged son in The Harder They Fall. Up front, we should say that the two movies have one amazing connection: Majors co-stars with Lindo in both, and the two actors give great performances in both.
However, as Lindo’s son in Bloods, Majors plays a young man with a much milder temper. As a college professor sporting retro T-shirts and caps worn backward, he is at first fully uninterested in his father’s trip back to Vietnam to try to right a wrong and find a hidden fortune. Yet Majors follows him there, trying to reason with...

There are few actors as versatile and intensely arresting as Lakeith Stanfield. Since appearing in Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12 upon graduating from high school, Stanfield has gone on to work with premier talents, including Ava DuVernay, Jordan Peele and Donald Glover. Most recently, he joined his contemporaries Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Idris Elba in Netflix’s thunderous Western The Harder They Fall.

Jonathan Majors’ Kang was supposed to be the big antagonist in the upcoming Avengers films and the climactic antagonist for the ‘Multiversal Saga’ of the MCU. However, the actor was dropped from future Marvel projects due to his legal troubles and eventual sentencing after being accused of assault.

About two and a half years have gone by since it was announced that Delroy Lindo – whose credits include Get Shorty, Da 5 Bloods, The Core, Malcolm X, and The Harder They Fall (plus more than 65 others) – had signed on to join Mahershala Ali in the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of Blade. While we wait to see if that Lindo will still be in that vampire hunter movie when it finally goes into production, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Lindo has been cast in the mysterious genre project that’s coming our way from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct. This project is shrouded in secrecy, but is rumored to be a vampire story.

Delroy Lindo is heading back to the big screen.
The actor, who in recent years has starred in Hulu’s Unprisoned and appeared in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, has closed a deal to join Michael B. Jordan in the untitled supernatural horror thriller that Ryan Coogler is directing for Warner Bros.
Little is known about that project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South, and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.
Lindo’s part is being kept in the coffin but one source describes it as having a musical element to it. The feature is gearing for shoot later this spring in New Orleans, and recently cast Jack O’Connell as a villain.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was created over the past five years. During that span of time, the world was upended by a global pandemic and social strife; Martin Scorsese grappled with the blood on the hands of American history with Killers of the Flower Moon; and Beyoncé brought diamonds and disco to the dance floor on Renaissance. All these vastly different occurrences are components that informed the creation, imagery, and release of Beyoncé’s first-ever country album.

Jonathan Majors’ rise to stardom was something that everyone was excited to witness. The last few years turned out to be pivotal for the actor as his projects like Lovecraft Country, Da 5 Bloods, and The Harder They Fall proved to be stepping stones in his rise as a Hollywood actor. He was selected to portray the MCU’s next big threat Kang in the current Multiverse saga.

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot twists in the new movie “Imaginary.“
To the public, DeWanda Wise is the glamorous heart of movies like “The Harder They Fall” and “Jurassic World Dominion,” but she consistently describes herself as a “nerdy actor.”
While she plays it cool as Jessica, the hero battling a sinister teddy bear named Chauncey in the new horror movie “Imaginary,” Wise pushes herself by working behind the camera. Her executive producer credit on the Lionsgate film was not a vanity title, but rather an essential step on her journey to claim space behind the scenes.
“I’m a filmmaker,” she said. “I have never been the kind of actor that shows up to a set and just lays back in the makeup chair.”
Wearing multiple hats encouraged Wise to prepare deeply for the role, essential for a film like “Imaginary,” which required plenty of emotion and physicality.

Biblical epics used to be Hollywood's bread and butter. From "The Ten Commandments" to "Ben-Hur," the unique blend of high-stakes drama, and big-scale spectacle used to dominate the box office as well as awards season. Today, they've all but disappeared from the filmmaking landscape. This makes the release of a movie like "The Book of Clarence" all the more special.
Written and directed by Jeymes "The Bullitts" Samuel ("The Harder They Fall"), "The Book of Clarence" combines a biblical epic with the comedic tone of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" or Mel Brook's "History of the World," poking fun at the story of a rising messiah, and the man who sees that fame and power and decides to get some of that for himself.

World premiering at last year’s BFI London Film Festival, the film was released in U.S. theaters on January 12.

The MLK holiday weekend proved to be surprisingly fruitful at the box office thanks to strong showings from both the "Mean Girls" movie musical and Jason Statham's new beat-em-up, "The Beekeeper." Unfortunately, they can't all be winners and Sony Pictures' new comedic Biblical epic "The Book of Clarence" faltered in its debut. It now has the distinction of being the first true theatrical disappointment of 2024.
Directed by Jeymes Samuel, the film opened to just $2.5 million over the weekend, with that number growing to $3 million when accounting for the Monday holiday, per The Numbers. It placed 10th on the charts, barely squeaking into the top 10 sandwiched between a pair of holdovers in the forms of "The Boys in the Boat" ($3.4 million) and "The Iron Claw" ($2.4 million). A rough start, to be certain. And yes, certain parts of the U.S. are experiencing terrible winter weather, which impacted moviegoing for sure.

The Book of Clarence, Jeymes Samuel’s follow-up to all-Black Western The Harder They Fall, is, without doubt, the funkiest biblical epic ever put on screen. The film, which opened across the U.S. on Friday, Jan. 12 — nicely nestled between Christmas and Easter — is a combination of comedy, drama and satire, at turns sacred and profane, a mash-up of Monty Python’s Life of Brian with sword-and-sandal epics of another era, from The Ten Commandments to The Robe.
Lakeith Stanfield leads an A-list cast — which includes James McAvoy, David Oyelowo, Anna Diop, Benedict Cumberbatch and Alfre Woodard — as the titular Clarence, a street hustler and religious skeptic in early A.D. Jeymes Samuel can take the heat when it comes to commentary about his work. And he’s expecting plenty to follow the release of his latest film, The Book of Clarence, a biblical epic set for release on Jan. 12 about a man who, witnessing the rising popularity of Jesus the Messiah, attempts to cash in on that fame by performing fake miracles to get out of debt.
“People always see things the wrong way and they call it backlash,” says the director who also wrote and produced the film and its accompanying soundtrack, which arrives Friday along with the feature. “It’s conversation. I like the smoke. Let’s talk.”
Lakeith Stanfield stars in the lead role of Clarence, which reunites him with his The Harder They Fall co-star R J Cyler among a large ensemble cast that includes Omar Sy, Caleb McLaughlin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop and James McAvoy.

Plot: In A.D 33, Jerusalem, a hustler named Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield), thinks he’s found the perfect con – he’s going to pose as a new messiah. Yet, when the plan works better than expected, he finds something he never thought he would – faith.
Review: It’s interesting that people are comparing The Book of Clarence to Life of Brian, as other than the A.D 33 setting, they have next to nothing in common. When people heard Jeymes Samuel would be making an off-kilter comedy set at the time of Jesus Christ, they assumed it would be a hard-hitting satire. But the truth is that The Book of Clarence is ultimately a morality tale with heavy Christian themes. While the apostles may take a ribbing, Jesus himself is presented as an unassailably positive character. The result is a movie that will probably have a more challenging time crossing over to...

There’s a new biblical epic hitting cinema screens this weekend, but it’s vastly different than the many that have come before it.
Jeymes Samuel’s “The Book of Clarence,” the British musician/filmmaker’s lively follow up to his wildly energetic all-Black Western “The Harder They Fall,” gives the dusty sword-and-sandal genre a bold, funk-infused remix.
The Legendary film, which Sony’s Tristar Pictures is releasing Jan. 12 and counts Jay-Z among its executive producers, follows a Holy Land hustler and religious skeptic (Lakeith Stanfield) who attempts to fashion himself as a Messiah to clear some debts. The movie also features a chariot-racing Mary Magdalene (Teyana Taylor), an unimpressed John the Baptist (David Oyelowo) and a Virgin Mary (Alfre Woodard) unafraid to hand out slaps to those who dare cast doubt on her sin-free status. And then there’s Jesus Christ himself, played with an air of near-silent cool by Nicholas Pinnock,...

It’s just another day on the mean streets of Judea circa 33 A.D., where people hang out on sunbaked corners talking smack, working-class stiffs scramble to get by, and Roman centurions — the LAPD of their day — stop and frisk anyone who they feel matches the description of a suspect. Jay-Z has teamed up with D’Angelo for a new song titled “I Want You Forever.”

In a statement, Samuel said the story and music for The Book of Clarence were “percolating” in his mind even while working on previous projects. “There was never a question as to whether I would compose the score and write and perform on the soundtrack, as well as write and direct the movie,” he stated. “It was all one amazing journey where one depended on the other.”

Old-school Biblical epics have long been relics of the past, particularly a conservative, homogenous, Christian-oriented culture, reflecting values, attitudes, and an ideology considered universal more than half a century ago. For writer-director-musician Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall), everything old is new again, specifically old-school Biblical epics recast — literally and figuratively — for more modern, ethnically and culturally diverse times like our own. Samuel decided to express his unabashed love for Hollywood Biblical epics through a modern, Black-oriented lens. Bold, provocative, and confounding in equal measure, the result, The Book of Clarence, will be frustrating on one end and divisive on the other. Working from a tried-and-true template, Samuel structures The Book of Clarence around the eventful days of the little-known, completely...

In The Book of Clarence, Jeymes Samuel applies his jocular style — anachronistic music, rapid-fire banter and winking asides — to a Biblical epic that ends up strangely self-conscious when it comes to its comic ambitions. The director’s latest venture whisks audiences off to ancient Jerusalem, where locals grumble about the Romans and circulate news of a Messiah. Rumor has it he calls himself the son of God (something about an Immaculate Conception) and can turn water into wine. He leads a flock of apostles, 12 men devoted to spreading his gospel (they believe all men are born equal). Few people have seen this Jesus, but his existence excites them.
Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield), a peddler whose cocksure attitude shrouds the softer parts of his heart, doesn’t buy it. The claims made on behalf of Jesus are strong. (Walking on water? Really?) God doesn’t exist and you can’t raise the dead,...

Can “Mean Girls” make fetch happen at the box office?
Paramount’s new take on the teen classic is aiming to generate $30 million from 3,800 North American theaters over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The studio is projecting a debut in the high $20 million range, while independent tracking services estimate a start closer to $35 million. Those ticket sales would, indeed, be fetch because “Mean Girls” cost just $36 million to produce. It was originally commissioned to stream on Paramount+, but executives opted to release the film theatrically after audiences responded enthusiastically during test screenings.
The Plastics 2.0 won’t be the only newcomers to keep movie theaters bustling over the holiday frame. Amazon MGM’s “The Beekeeper,” an action thriller directed by David Ayer and starring Jason Statham, is expected to score a solid $17 million to $19 million over the four days. Another new release, Sony’s biblical comedic drama “The Book of Clarence,...

The holidays were dominated by two movie musicals — “Wonka” and “The Color Purple” — and just two weeks into January, we get a third one. “Mean Girls” is likely to not only be the biggest movie of the extended MLK Jr. weekend, but of the entire month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Twenty years after Tina Fey‘s influential comedy “Mean Girls” introduced the world to the elitist high school clique known as the Plastics, with a cast that included Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Amanda Seyfried, “Mean Girls” returns to theaters, this time as a musical transposed from a successful run on Broadway.
Fey is back as teacher Ms. Norbury, as is her “SNL” cast mate Tim Meadows as his character from the 2004 movie. They’re joined by a new young cast that includes Angourie Rice (from the “Spider-Man” movies) as Cady Heron – the...

Clarence (Stanfield) is a small time “herb” dealer in Jerusalem in 33 Ad, during the time of the adult Jesus. Frustrated at his status in life and owing money, he recruits his best friend Elijah (Rj Tyler) and former slave Barabbas (Omar Sy) to become part of a scheme to create their own following, with Clarence as a messiah. To make this work, he seeks advice from Jesus’ mother Mary (Alfre Woodard), gets baptized by the famous John (David Oyelowo) and seeks the approval of the woman he wants to woo (Anna Diop). What could go wrong?

Jeymes Samuel, aka The Bullitts, directed a Western in 2021 called "The Harder They Fall," which took the names of real post-Civil War cowboys and gunslingers and put them into a highly stylized, highly fictionalized adventure story that was exhilarating to watch and refreshingly complex. What Samuel seemed to be doing was reclaiming the Western genre from the hands of boors like John Wayne and his associated "white savior" stories that, for many Hollywood generations, deliberately ignored the Black experience.
Samuel now takes a similar approach to the Hollywood Biblical epic with "The Book of Clarence," an exciting, ambitious, sloppy, but somewhat excellent New Testament remix, replete with a mishmash of tones, anachronisms, and interesting ideas. "Clarence" sees Jerusalem in Ad 33 as the setting of a modern crime drama, wherein the title character (Lakeith Stanfield) interacts with a slap-happy John the Baptist (David Oyelowo), his own bitter twin brother Thomas the...
