As electronic musician Dan Deacon has increasingly lent his talents to the big screen, it’s become more and more difficult to guess his next move. Between scoring inventive nonfiction features like “Rat Film” and “Time Trial,” Deacon has also found the time to contribute music to Francis Ford Coppola’s fascinating “Twixt” and Fisher Stevens and Malcolm Venville’s heart-pounding “And We Go Green.” His latest: Rebecca Stern’s “Well Groomed,” a flashy documentary about, of all things, the wild world of professional dog grooming.

Stern’s documentary, entirely scored by Deacon, premiered at SXSW in 2019, before working its way around the festival circuit, including screenings at Hot Docs, Montclair, Bentonville, RiverRun, Sarasota, and many more. Earlier this month, “Well Groomed” hit streaming, through HBO.

Per its official synopsis, it “explores the exuberant world of competitive dog grooming and follows the lives of dog owners who are challenging the definition of art.

Updated: Apple has signed a first-look television deal with Appian Way, the production company founded by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The multi-year deal will see Appian Way develop television projects for Apple. DiCaprio and Appian Way, which is co-run by Jennifer Davisson, already have two projects set up at the streamer — the feature “Killers of the Flower Moon” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring DiCaprio, as well as the thriller series “Shining Girls” which DiCaprio will executive produce and in which Elisabeth Moss will star.

Apple has signed a multi-year, first-look deal with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions.

The deal with Appian Way, which is co-run by Jennifer Davisson, covers both film and TV projects.

DiCaprio is already set to star in Martin Scorsese’s film for the streaming service, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and is a producer on Elisabeth Moss’s upcoming thriller “Shining Girls.”

DiCaprio joins a stable of Apple producers including Oprah Winfrey, Idris Elba, Alfonso Cuaron, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Justin Lin, Kerry Ehrin, Jason Katims, Lee Eisenberg, Monica Beletsky, Sharon Horgan, Alena Smith and Simon Kinberg.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is an adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction book from 2017. Grann’s non-fiction story is set in the 1920s and follows the richest people per capita in the world at the time, the members of Osage Nation in Oklahoma.

“Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins is set to write a feature film adaptation of the 2014 documentary “Virunga” for Netflix that Leonardo DiCaprio will produce through his Appian Way banner, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

DiCaprio executive produced the Oscar-nominated film “Virunga” that followed the fight to protect endangered mountain gorillas in the Congo. The film launched on Netflix in 2014 and is currently available globally, and it told the true story of rangers risking their lives in Africa’s most precious national park.

Jennifer Davisson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Phillip Watson are producing for Appian Way, as is Joanna Natasegara for Violet Films. And Orlando von Einsiedel, who directed the original documentary, will executive produce.

Hulu is out with its list of everything coming and going on the streaming service in June.

Highlights include a new episode of the Hulu original anthology series “Into the Dark” called “Good Boy,” which follows Maggie (Judy Greer), who gets an emotional support dog for her anxiety — but little does she know, he kills anyone who adds stress to her life. Malcolm Venville is set to direct what the filmmakers believe will be the definitive account of Timothy Leary’s odyssey, with never-before-seen access to Leary’s personal archive.

This is thanks to resources provided by Horowitz, a rare books and manuscripts specialist who was building a library in San Francisco on the history of mind-altering drugs when he learned that psychedelic scientist/LSD advocate Leary had been imprisoned in Governor Ronald Reagan’s crackdown.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest environmentally conscientious documentary And We Go Green, is heading to Hulu. RadicalMedia announced today that the doc, which focuses on the rise of Formula E electric car racing and its positive impact in combating global warming and air pollution, will be available in the U.S. via the streamer on June 4.

Oscar-winning documentarian Fisher Stevens and Malcolm Venville co-directed the film, a followup to Stevens and DiCaprio’s 2016 climate change doc Before The Flood.

“And We Go Green” premiered at Cannes in 2019 and also played Tiff last fall, and it will now stream on Hulu beginning on June 4.

It was November 2018 and Nanfu Wang had four weeks before picture-lock on her third feature documentary, “One Child Nation.” The film, which Wang co-directed and edited, had already been accepted to the 2019 Sundance Film Festival but wasn’t quite ready.

“I was debating and really struggling with what note to end the film on,” Wang says. “I needed a fresh set of eyes.”

The University of Oklahoma journalism graduate has been the doc industry’s go-to guy for the past decade. His writing on the 2009 Academy Award-winning “The Cove” put him on the map.

“The Cove,” which received equity money from Impact Partners, was Louie Psihoyos’ first film.

“The Cove” producer “Fisher Stevens wanted to bring Mark on to help restructure the film,” says Geralyn White Dreyfous, co-founder and executive producer of Impact Partners. “At the time, Louie’s film was so linear and just straight storytelling.

When asked about the founding of Formula E, a motorsport circuit that uses only electric cars, its current leader, a former Spanish politician named Alejandro Agag, lights a stogie and tells the unvarnished truth. Advertisers were starting to cool to Formula One for environmental reasons, and Agag admits that business incentivized the development of Formula E more than concern for the air that he’s filling with cigar smoke. The confession reflects the ethos of “And We Go Green,” a documentary about the series’ fourth year that presents itself as a planet-conscious endorsement of clean-energy technology, but is mostly about the brash personalities competing for the championship. It’s the type of engaging-but-shallow sports doc that pops up frequently on streaming services, which seem the finish lines it will ultimately cross.

Last fall, documentary essayist Mark Cousins unveiled an ambitious new project: “Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Film,” which presents an alternative approach to film history exclusively through movies directed by women. The four hours presented at Tiff 2018 boasted a Tilda Swinton voiceover and the searing assertion that “film history is sexist.”

Now, Cousins has completed the project, and Tiff is giving it a lot of space: The entire 14 hours of “Women Make Film” will screen at the festival in five separate installments. “I think that the film is going to rewrite film history and how we understand the role of women directors,” Tiff Docs programmer Thom Powers said.

The previous installments screened quietly at the festival because “Mark was low key about it as he finished it,” Powers said. He wasn’t concerned about how moviegoers would make time for the finished product in the midst of a hectic festival schedule.

The Toronto Film Festival has revealed this year’s lineups for its documentary, Midnight Madness, Discovery and retro Cinematheque sections, adding movies from Alex Gibney, Barbara Kopple, Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Stanley and Ali LeRoi to the 2019 fest that kicks off next month.

Tiff Docs’ 25 pics kicks off with the world premiere of Feras Fayyad’s The Cave, about an underground hospital led by a female doctor in war-torn Syria. Also in the mix is Kopple’s Desert One, chronicling a perilous mission to rescue hostages in Iran, and Gibney’s Citizen K, profiling the Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Meanwhile, the genre lineup of Midnight Madness includes Richard Stanley’s H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space, which stars Nicolas Cage and brings the director back to the section after 29 years, and Takashi Miike’s Japanese action-comedy First Love.

The lineup of 25 nonfiction works in the documentary category cover an array of topics and subjects — ranging from immigration to corruption in politics to Truman Capote’s rarefied social circle. The announcement comes as documentaries have become one of the most reliable sources of box office revenues for indie studios. Films such as “Free Solo” and “Rbg” were among the biggest arthouse hits of 2018 and there’s a lot of interest among buyers in the films in this section. Thom Powers, Tiff Docs programmer, attributes the rising commercial prospects of these films to the ubiquity of non-fiction works on Netflix and other streaming services.
