‘Predator: Badlands’ director Dan Trachtenberg has teased he’s taken a "big, crazy swing" with the upcoming movie. The sci-fi flick will put the titular alien hunter at the forefront of the story as its hero, and the 43-year-old filmmaker has now promised ‘Predator: Badlands’ will be a unique take on the beloved action franchise. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Trachtenberg said: "It’s a big, crazy swing, and I think that’s what drives butts into seats."If you want the same old Predator experience, you can hit play on ‘Predator’ or ‘Prey’ or any other, whichever one is your fit."‘Predator: Badlands’ follows the young Predator Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) after he has been outcast from his clan and sent to a remote planet where he forms an unlikely alliance with Thia (Elle Fanning) as the pair search for the ultimate adversary. While the director didn’t reveal...

The Predator is a classic movie monster who has always been the villain. Since attempting to hunt Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his friends through a Central American jungle in the 1987 John McTiernan-directed movie, the Predator has gone on to stalk his prey for decades. Dan Trachtenberg breathed new life into the franchise in 2022 with his breakout sequel, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. Now, he’s attempting to do what no other Predator movie has done before– transforming the Predator into the protagonist. His new Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, puts the focus on Dek (Dimitrius Koloamatangi), a hunter trying to prove himself on a strange planet. A Complete Unknown star Elle Fanning also stars in the movie.
Recently, Trachtenberg spoke with a group of journalists during an edit bay visit, in which Collider was in attendance. While there, Trachtenberg previewed the teaser trailer that debuted exclusively at CinemaCon, as well as the first 20 minutes of Badlands.

Netflix's weekly Top 10 lists are always worth a look, not least of all because they often reveal truly unexpected gems that the streaming platform has managed to resurrect. For example, FlixPatrol is reporting that "Alpha" (a film that was absolutely overlooked upon its initial release) made it onto Netflix's Top 10 in multiple countries on April 6, 2025, and has continued to chart in much of the world in the week since then.
Directed and co-written by Albert Hughes, "Alpha" is a 2018 survival adventure in which an injured Ice Age-era young man is separated from his tribe and has to team up with a similarly inconvenienced wolf to stay alive. Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, the movie is an entertaining and exciting adventure in a relatively uncommon live-action setting. As such, it's good to see that streaming has given this largely forgotten film a new chance to find its audience.

Few director/actor duos have been operating for as long as Paul W.S. Anderson and his favourite muse (and wife), Milla Jovovich. Over the last two decades, we’ve seen Jovovich fight all manner of fiends and creatures under Anderson’s direction in movies like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. In The Lost Lands, featuring the actor as all-powerful witch Alys, sticks to that formula, offering up an ample amount of both beastly and human foes to slay. But the eyesore visuals and lacklustre plot turn what should be breezy fun into a frustrating bore.
Anderson has been known to mix the digital with the practical in the past, but In The Lost Lands sees him at his most artificial. The post-apocalyptic dystopia he and regular cinematographer Glen MacPherson conjure seems to be aiming for Zack Snyder-esque desaturation but winds up closer to poorly rendered video-game territory, with lighting that feels anything but real.

Apple is one of the most successful companies on the planet. They're doing fine, and certainly don't need any help from us. But since it has never released any subscriber numbers for its streaming service, Apple TV+, and since that service's shows frequently rank very low on analyses of what people are watching, it seems like a lot of potential audiences simply are not aware that there's a treasure trove of original TV shows just waiting to be consumed.
If you're a science fiction fan, you're really in for a good time, because for years, the decision-makers over at Apple TV+ have been consistently greenlighting banger after banger of shows in that genre. Brain-melting thrillers, post-apocalyptic survival stories, family friendly anthologies, high-concept dramas -- Apple TV+ has just about every type of sci-fi flavor you could ask for, and they're often led by A-list actors and supported with lavish budgets.

He's considered one of the greatest actors of our time, yet even Denzel Washington has issues with some of his most rewatchable performances -- including one that earned him an Oscar. According to "The Book of Eli" writer Gary Whitta, Washington confessed that in the late 2000s, he felt somewhat annoyed by the final act of "Training Day," particularly the now-iconic speech in which he declared how very little s*** King Kong had on his character, Alonzo Harris.
During an appearance on "Kinda Funny Gamescast," Whitta recounted the surreal conversation of picking the best Denzel Washington films with Washington himself. While Whitta's top choice was "Man on Fire", "The Book of Eli" directors, the Hughes Brothers, who were also present, ranked "Training Day" at the top of their list. As Whitta recounted it:

The plot twist is a necessity for a movie to become more exciting than it already is. Across decades in cinema, audiences have been gifted with legendary reveals, like Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker's father in The Empire Strikes Back and Malcolm's true form in The Sixth Sense. There are also times when plot twists ruin their narratives by how nonsensical they are, such as certain reveals in The Rise of Skywalker and the death-causing plants in The Happening.
There are also instances where mediocre movies are ultimately elevated by a single ingenious reveal. For the majority of the runtime, these films follow a traditional path that other stories in their genre have done before. However, through a well-written third-act reveal, these once-average movies, including Malignant, The Book of Eli, and Click, are saved from being sent into obscurity.

Denzel Washington has dabbled across several genres in his time as a Hollywood leading man, but he's only ever been in one true horror movie, 1998's Fallen, and it deserves far more recognition than it gets. The supernatural religious horror movie features Washington as a seasoned Philadelphia police detective who is investigating a series of ritualistic murders that are reminiscent of those committed by a serial killer he had already put on death row. What begins as a religious thriller veers into supernatural horror with the introduction of genuine demonic possession as the narrative unfolds.
While Fallen was regarded as a box office flop upon its release, it has gained a certain cult status over the years, and is widely regarded as one of Denzel Washington's most underrated movies. The stand-alone movie has an original, creative plot that is appropriately dark for a creepy religious horror movie, and it features...

The ending of 2010's post-apocalyptic action movie The Book of Eli is steeped in deeper meaning and features a shocking twist. The Book of Eli follows Denzel Washington as the titular Eli, a rugged survivor traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland in possession of a mysterious book that it's quickly apparent many are willing to kill for. Though the average critical response was negative, some praised The Book of Eli's gripping plot and exciting twist on the post-apocalyptic genre.
Even among a wealth of other films tackling the same subject, The Book of Eli manages to world-build in a way that is constantly compelling, and the movie grossed over $150 million (via Box Office Mojo). Denzel Washington wasn't always seen as an action star. Since the '80s, he has headlined a number of dramatic films that have earned him awards recognition, but his career shifted in the early 2000s with the release of Man on Fire (2004), which saw him become a one-man army-type of hero. This continued with The Book of Eli (2010), Safe House (2012), and 2 Guns (2013), all of which feature Washington taking down an abundance of enemies.
Now 70 years old, Washington is still widely associated with the action genre due to his starring role in a popular thriller franchise. The American actor takes on the role of a former government assassin in the Antoine Fuqua-directed movies, killing criminals and protecting the innocent with lethal efficiency. Washington first played the assassin in 2014 before returning for two sequels.

Few actors in Hollywood are as respected and admired as Denzel Washington. After getting his start in acting back in the late 1970s and having his first breakout role in the medical drama St. Elsewhere, in which he played Dr. Phillip Chandler on all six seasons, Washington has played a number of iconic characters in a variety acclaimed movies. Some of his most memorable early movies include Glory (1989), Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), and, of course, Training Day (2001). In fact, he has been nominated for 10 Oscars so far, winning two, for Glory and Training Day.
Starting in the mid-2000s, a career shift occurred and Washington became something of an action star alongside his continued work in more dramatic productions such as 2002's Antwone Fisher, 2007's The Great Debaters, and 2012's Flight. This new phase of Washington's career could largely be considered to start with Man on Fire in 2004. A handful of years later,...

Denzel Washington is having a huge career year, which is deserved after his decades of work in the industry. Ridley Scott's historical epic Gladiator II, in which Washington played Macrinus, became the highest-grossing movie in the actor's career. He was nominated for both a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe award for his work in the film, and is expected to get an Oscar nomination next month. Awards have oft recognized Washington's work as such, as he has won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor, for Glory and Training Day, respectively.
That said, not all of Washington's work has been met with such overwhelming praise. Though he has had some notably critically acclaimed work, the actor's Rotten Tomatoes scores have also struggled at points. This is evidenced by movies such as Heart Condition, John Q, and The Bone Collector, all of which had Rotten Tomatoes scores...

There's nothing like a good mystery to keep audiences watching. Normally, action movies don't tend to use mystery as a driving force, but the 2010s dystopian flick The Book Of Eli decided to go with that, and it worked in its favor. Led by Denzel Washington (Gladiator II), the movie follows the title character, who is on a mission to take a valuable book to a safe location on the West Coast of the U.S. after a nuclear holocaust decimated most of the population. The movie is now a hit on Max, landing at #5 among the most-watched titles on the platform and rivaling newer releases like Civil War.

Gary Oldman has, for five decades, been one of the greatest performers in the film industry, and comfortably holds the distinction of being one of the greatest actors of all time. Known for his immersive roles — which often require make-up and prosthetic additions — in some brilliant films, Oldman has demonstrated an impressive range rivaled by few other actors. While going unnoticed in a role is usually considered a detriment, Oldman's ability to sink into a persona completely has earned him heaps of praise, with fans often shocked to see his name next to a character they had no clue he was playing.
Gary Oldman's career spans various genres, roles, and personalities, all helping to make the actor arguably one of the most talented of his generation. Mad Max is one of the most influential action movies of all time, and in the years that followed its release, the series has only continued to grow in importance and popularity. George Miller’s cinematic dystopia is still thriving today, and while Furiosa struggled at the box office, there’s still plenty of room in today’s climate for blood-soaked, high-octane thrillers that take place in futures quite unlike our present.
Made on a low budget, Mad Max was a huge success because it was totally unlike anything that audiences had been exposed to before: it was dystopia, but not in the technological, sci-fi ways that films like Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey offered. Instead, the series presents the idea that our twisted future will be a return to the industrial revolution of the past, fixated on machines and automobiles that help us survive. It was a...

Denzel Washington explains why he enjoys taking on villain roles in addition to the more heroic roles he's often associated with. Washington remains one of the most respected actors working in Hollywood, and he's widely known for more heroic roles, including in such projects as The Book of Eli (2010) and The Equalizer trilogy. He's also just as well-known for playing morally-corrupted figures, however, as he did in Training Day (2001) and American Gangster (2007). He can next be seen as part of the cast of Gladiator 2, playing Macrinus, another antagonistic character.
During a recent interview with Esquire in which he breaks down his various roles, past, present, and future, Washington touches on his penchant for playing antagonist characters. The actor keeps his explanation short and sweet, explaining that the villain characters are often just more fun. Check out his comment below:

Denzel Washington delivers an incredible monologue to The Equalizer's main villain, and it's one where the subtext is pretty clear. Denzel didn't have much luck with action movies before 2004's Man on Fire, with this Tony Scott thriller casting him as a bodyguard on a relentless quest for revenge. Other notable Denzel Washington action movies include Unstoppable and The Book of Eli. Denzel even found himself an action franchise with The Equalizer movies.

British actor John Boyega best known for his international breakout role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sparked speculation about his next role after numerous Instagram posts showed the star hard at work in the gym. Although Boyega has previously expressed his disinterest in joining the MCU as a superhero or supervillain the intense training that fans witnessed has them wondering if Boyega will appear in an upcoming Marvel movie after all.

Over the past few days, Boyega has uploaded several pictures to his Instagram account, all of which show the Star Wars actor putting in some serious time at the gym. Since it's unlikely that Boyega is prepping for another Star Wars film, given his less-than positive comments about his experience in the franchise, fans are now wondering if Boyega's intense training regimen is a sign of a prospective role in the MCU.

The action genre is full of exciting set pieces, dramatic character studies, and thoughtful direction, with some films daring to push the envelope and offer compact narrative storytelling. When an action film steps back and allows the plot structure of a film to truly develop, it must then navigate a series of clichs and decide whether it is going to pursue those or stray from them. For as long as stories have existed, the notion of a 'heroic sacrifice' has been a possibility.
In the realm of cinema, heroic sacrifices are a dime a dozen, and they're especially plentiful in the action genre. That said, some end up feeling pretty lackluster when not delivered with the gravitas an audience expects from such a drastic story beat. But when a heroic sacrifice feels earned and walks the line between being shocking and making total sense of the trajectory of the hero,...

One of the biggest genres in Hollywood will always be post-apocalyptic, dystopian stories. The likes of Mad Max stand tall, but there are other properties such as 28 Days Later and I Am Legend that mix zombies and monsters into the story of broken humanity trying to survive a wasteland. One of the biggest streaming franchises with a dedicated fan base is The Walking Dead, with multiple spin-off stories.
Denzel Washington's The Book of Eli is another classic film in a post-apocalyptic setting. The 2010 movie from the Hughes Brothers is now getting a prequel starring John Boyega that will depict the early days of the nuclear bombing that decimated the world. This disaster is notable for the world it made and for the condition of blindness it created in many people who lived through it. That is the big twist in The Book of Eli: Eli is a blind warrior.

Apocalypse movies on Prime Video explore the collapse of modern society, offering unique perspectives on survival and human drama. These films push the boundaries of storytelling, unraveling social realities amidst chaos, with tender, inspiring moments amidst hopelessness. From zombie apocalypses to alien invasions, apocalyptic movies offer a compelling look at the resilience of humanity in the face of disaster.
The best apocalypse movies on Prime Video have one thing in common: they imagine the collapse of modern society and hold a broken mirror up to the unlucky survivors. In movies, the end of the world can be caused by a virus, zombies, nuclear war, a giant meteor, a water or food crisis, or some other natural or unnatural disaster. Either way, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movies are about those who somehow survive the worst-case scenario for the planet.
This template affords filmmakers the perfect backdrop for pushing the boundaries of human drama.

Post-apocalyptic action films like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Book of Eli are perfect pairings for Furiosa. Turbo Kid offers a fun, bloody, post-apocalyptic experience that complements Furiosa with its action and gore. Reign of Fire, Snowpiercer, Children of Men, and A Quiet Place provide unique, intense post-apocalyptic settings that contrast with Furiosa.
There are plenty of great post-apocalyptic action films to pair with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The new spinoff in George Miller's high-octane Mad Max franchise, Furiosa is getting rave early reviews, following in the footsteps of his dynamic 2015 blockbuster hit, Mad Max: Fury Road. Starting in 1979, the Mad Max movies have gotten more thrilling and suspenseful with every entry, and there are several action-packed films in a similar post-apocalyptic vein as Furiosa.

Despite ancient humans having already overcome several potential doomsday scenarios in real life, post-apocalyptic fiction used to be relatively rare until the invention of the atomic bomb convinced us that the end of the world could be just around the proverbial corner.
Since then, we’ve seen many different stories about the collapse of civilization and the strange societies that might emerge from the rubble, but I’d argue that one of the most interesting of these apocalyptic visions is the post-nuclear America of the iconic Fallout games. A witty satire of American jingoism and cold war shenanigans, it’s honestly baffling that it so long for us to finally see a live-action adaptation of this memorable setting.
Thankfully, Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet’s Fallout TV show isn’t just a great adaptation – it’s also an incredibly fun standalone story that makes the most of its post-apocalyptic worldbuilding.

Carol Peletier, played by Melissa McBride, is arguably the most riveting character in The Walking Dead franchise.
Calculating and cold-hearted at times but comforting when she needs to be, Carol walks the line between hero and anti-hero, never once failing to bring pathos to her character.
Imagine the intrigue of fans when AMC Networks announced that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 will be subtitled "The Book of Carol."
Hmm. We've got to do something about that title.
What does "The Book of Carol" mean, anyway? Is it a biblical allusion like The Book of Enoch or The Book of Eli?
Or is "The Book of Carol" in reference to a book Carol is writing during her time away from the original Grimes clan, perhaps a book of poetry inspired by non-confrontational walkers?
Carol's presence on The Walking Dead, while mesmerizing, is not exactly a strong narrative pull, at least as a singular protagonist.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit. However, back when I was a teenager, my parents showed up one night with an unusually cool-looking DVD of a movie that had been recommended to them by a church leader. Curious to see what new kind of evangelical propaganda my parents had rented this time, I proceeded to watch the film with them expecting a heavy-handed snoozefest.
To my surprise, I was a few minutes in when Denzel Washington proceeded to dismember a band of cannibal raiders when I realized that this was in fact a real movie. My mom was horrified by the flick’s extreme violence and dark subject matter, but I instantly became a fan of the Hughes Brothers’ faith-based 2010 thriller, The Book of Eli. Write for yourself, not the fans: Jonathan Nolan's approach to creating the Fallout series is rooted in self-expression. Fans misunderstood: Nolan's focus on quality storytelling over fan-service is key to success in video game adaptations. Nolan's passion shows: Ignoring fan demands allows for a more genuine adaptation that captures the essence of Fallout.
The world of video game adaptations has seen a welcome shift in quality over the past few years. The dreaded 'Video Game Curse', which plagued adaptations since 1993's Super Mario Bros., has seemingly been broken, and the horizon looks clear for the packed slate of upcoming shows based on beloved gaming franchises. One such series is Prime Video's Fallout, created by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld).
The moment Nolan's name was attached to the project, fans of Bethesda's acclaimed video games felt a wave of hope wash over them, thanks to Jonathan Nolan's phenomenal filmography as a writer.

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Hollywood wants to expand Denzel Washington's franchises, and a prequel show for The Equalizer could be the next step. The success of The Equalizer movies has sparked discussions about how the franchise can continue, with a prequel being a more interesting option than building off of The Equalizer 3. If Denzel Washington sticks to his word and doesn't return for The Equalizer 4, a prequel movie or show becomes the only way for the series to move forward. Recasting, like The Book of Eli, would be a smarter route than de-aging Denzel.

John Boyega starring in The Book of Eli prequel series has the potential to renew interest in the original movie and bring about a fresh perspective on the story.
