The Predator is a classic movie monster who has always been the villain. Since attempting to hunt Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his friends through a Central American jungle in the 1987 John McTiernan-directed movie, the Predator has gone on to stalk his prey for decades. Dan Trachtenberg breathed new life into the franchise in 2022 with his breakout sequel, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. Now, he’s attempting to do what no other Predator movie has done before– transforming the Predator into the protagonist. His new Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, puts the focus on Dek (Dimitrius Koloamatangi), a hunter trying to prove himself on a strange planet. A Complete Unknown star Elle Fanning also stars in the movie.

Recently, Trachtenberg spoke with a group of journalists during an edit bay visit, in which Collider was in attendance. While there, Trachtenberg previewed the teaser trailer that debuted exclusively at CinemaCon, as well as the first 20 minutes of Badlands.

Netflix's weekly Top 10 lists are always worth a look, not least of all because they often reveal truly unexpected gems that the streaming platform has managed to resurrect. For example, FlixPatrol is reporting that "Alpha" (a film that was absolutely overlooked upon its initial release) made it onto Netflix's Top 10 in multiple countries on April 6, 2025, and has continued to chart in much of the world in the week since then.

Directed and co-written by Albert Hughes, "Alpha" is a 2018 survival adventure in which an injured Ice Age-era young man is separated from his tribe and has to team up with a similarly inconvenienced wolf to stay alive. Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, the movie is an entertaining and exciting adventure in a relatively uncommon live-action setting. As such, it's good to see that streaming has given this largely forgotten film a new chance to find its audience.

Few director/actor duos have been operating for as long as Paul W.S. Anderson and his favourite muse (and wife), Milla Jovovich. Over the last two decades, we’ve seen Jovovich fight all manner of fiends and creatures under Anderson’s direction in movies like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. In The Lost Lands, featuring the actor as all-powerful witch Alys,sticks to that formula, offering up an ample amount of both beastly and human foes to slay. But the eyesore visuals and lacklustre plot turn what should be breezy fun into a frustrating bore.

Anderson has been known to mix the digital with the practical in the past, but In The Lost Lands sees him at his most artificial. The post-apocalyptic dystopia he and regular cinematographer Glen MacPherson conjure seems to be aiming for Zack Snyder-esque desaturation but winds up closer to poorly rendered video-game territory, with lighting that feels anything but real.

But since it has never released any subscriber numbers for its streaming service, Apple TV+, and since that service's shows frequently rank very low on analyses of what people are watching, it seems like a lot of potential audiences simply are not aware that there's a treasure trove of original TV shows just waiting to be consumed.

If you're a science fiction fan, you're really in for a good time, because for years, the decision-makers over at Apple TV+ have been consistently greenlighting banger after banger of shows in that genre. Brain-melting thrillers, post-apocalyptic survival stories, family friendly anthologies, high-concept dramas -- Apple TV+ has just about every type of sci-fi flavor you could ask for, and they're often led by A-list actors and supported with lavish budgets.

He's considered one of the greatest actors of our time, yet even Denzel Washington has issues with some of his most rewatchable performances -- including one that earned him an Oscar. According to "The Book of Eli" writer Gary Whitta, Washington confessed that in the late 2000s, he felt somewhat annoyed by the final act of "Training Day," particularly the now-iconic speech in which he declared how very little s*** King Kong had on his character, Alonzo Harris.

The plot twist is a necessity for a movie to become more exciting than it already is. Across decades in cinema, audiences have been gifted with legendary reveals, like Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker's father in The Empire Strikes Back and Malcolm's true form in The Sixth Sense. There are also times when plot twists ruin their narratives by how nonsensical they are, such as certain reveals in The Rise of Skywalker and the death-causing plants in The Happening.

There are also instances where mediocre movies are ultimately elevated by a single ingenious reveal. For the majority of the runtime, these films follow a traditional path that other stories in their genre have done before. However, through a well-written third-act reveal, these once-average movies, including Malignant, The Book of Eli, and Click, are saved from being sent into obscurity.

Since then, we’ve seen many different stories about the collapse of civilization and the strange societies that might emerge from the rubble, but I’d argue that one of the most interesting of these apocalyptic visions is the post-nuclear America of the iconic Fallout games. A witty satire of American jingoism and cold war shenanigans, it’s honestly baffling that it so long for us to finally see a live-action adaptation of this memorable setting.

Thankfully, Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet’s Fallout TV show isn’t just a great adaptation – it’s also an incredibly fun standalone story that makes the most of its post-apocalyptic worldbuilding.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit.
