Charlie Crews and his partner investigate the apparent carjacking and murder of a young woman. Her husband was wounded in the attack and has only limited memories of what happened. When they arrest the likely carjacker and the victim refuses to identify him, the police wonder what he may be hiding. Charlie also visits the retired police officer who investigated his case, Carl Ames. The man remains convinced that Crews is guilty but Charlie now has evidence that the fourth member of the family he was falsely convicted of killing, Rachel Seybolt, was in the house at the time of the murders and not at a sleep over as the investigator claimed. Charlie's lawyer warns him that under the terms of his settlement, he is not to approach anyone previously involved in his case and that he is to stay away from Carl Ames.
