Hong Kong-based indie sales agent Good Move Media has added Japanese music drama “Plastic” to its FilMart slate.
The film is directed by Miyazaki Daisuke, the Japanese helmer behind “Yamato (California),” which had festival play in 2016, and 2019 slacker youth title “Tourism” in 2019.
The new picture is the story of teenagers Juna and Ibuki, who set out to find the psychedelic rock band Exne Kedy. Exne Kedy is a fictional creation from musician Ide Kensuke, who previously released punky album “Kensuke Ide With His Mothership — Contact From Exne Kedy and the Poltergeists,” but the band is actually credited as performing and providing part of the music track in the film. “Plastic” is recently completed and headed for a theatrical release in Japan in July.

Undoubtedly, Ama Lea is one of the hardest-working figures in the L.A. horror scene. She’s a director, photographer, launched her own lingerie line a few years ago through her company Poltergeists and Paramours, and she somehow found the time to make thousands of face masks during the pandemic. And that barely even scratches the surface when it comes to Ama’s boundless talents. But if you’re on the lookout for some great horror-inspired gifts this holiday season, I highly recommend checking out Ama’s online shop at: https://www.poltergeistsandparamours.com/ to check out her designs.
You’re a Jill of all trades. Can you talk about what inspires you as a creative force in the genre space, and what it is about horror specifically that motivates you as a filmmaker and as a designer as well?

Don’t cross the streams. Never take your hands off a Ouija board without first saying “Goodbye.” The undead has to be invited in. Kill it with fire. Shoot it in the head. Wolfman’s got nards.
When it comes to the entertainment of the unexplained, or paranormal pop culture, humans live in a world(s) populated by all manner of preternatural, supernatural, otherworldly, and extradimensional phenomena. But entertainment also tells us there are rules that bring order to the abnormal – whether it’s a ghost or demon, alien or sasquatch, werewolf or vampire, or even a troll or fairy.
Yet behind every silver bullet solution that makes it into a script, there is typically a wealth of academic study that’s both complicated, and sometimes contradictory. From folklore to grimoire, anthropology to parapsychology, researchers have attempted to document and take a serious look at topics slightly askew from the norm.

Sam Raimi, who helped launch the modern superhero movie with 2002’s “Spider-Man,” is in talks to direct “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Marvel Studios, Variety has learned.
Raimi replaces original director Scott Derrickson, who Variety reported on Jan. 9 had officially departed the project due to creative differences. Derrickson will remain as an executive producer. Raimi, meanwhile, will need to get up to speed before the film’s scheduled production start date in May.
Marvel had no comment.
After finishing his “Spider-Man” trilogy for Sony Pictures with 2007’s “Spider-Man 3,” Raimi’s output as a director slowed considerably, with just the horror pic “Drag Me to Hell” in 2009 and Disney’s “The Wizard of Oz” prequel “Oz the Great and Powerful” in 2013. Instead, he’s been busy as a producer, helping relaunch various horror franchises like “Poltergeist” and his own classic, “Evil Dead.”

If you're a fan of Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher) I've got a trailer for a new film of his that you've gotta check out. It's called Sweet Virginia and it looks like a wickedly intense and brutal thriller. The movie also stars Christopher Abbott (Girls), Imogen Poots (Green Room), and Rosemarie Dewitt (Poltergeist).
The movie follows two outsider-type strangers that start up a friendship that seems to go very bad as a wave of violence in the community in which they reside begins. It looks like Bernthal gives an incredible performance and I'll definitely be checking the movie out!
A mysterious stranger sends shockwaves through a close-knit community in this nerve-jangling slice of raw suspense. In the wake of a triple murder that leaves the residents of a remote Alaskan outpost on edge, tightly wound drifter Elwood (Christopher Abbott) checks into a motel run by Sam (Jon Bernthal...

‘Intelligent’ mosquitoes and slacker demons were lurking at the third European edition of the genre film market in Brussels.
Despite last week’s terror attacks in Brussels, the show went on at Fantasia’s Frontières International Co-Production Market for genre films at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
For its third European edition, the market curated one of its strongest selections to date, including Baskin director Can Evrenol’s Housewife. This time, Evrenol will focus on a woman who struggles with a traumatic family history and slowly loses her grip on reality.
Another stand-out was Amanda Kramer’s Drain You, adapted from her own novel of the same name.
Executive produced by Poltergeist remake director Gil Kenan, producer Rebecca Rose Perkins described the project as an “Lgbt grunge horror” and “Blue Is The Warmest Colour meets It Follows”. Set in La, it follows a teenager who falls in lust with a sexy older girl and becomes ensnared...

He’s produced new versions of Poltergeist and Evil Dead (as well as having a hand in the TV show), but it’s been seven years since we last got a proper horror feature from Sam Raimi. Judging by his next project, it looks like we’ll have to wait even longer — but, in the meantime, he’s gotten a bit of the genre out of his system with a new Chevy commercial.
In promoting their 2016 Malibu and Cruze models, Chevrolet commissioned the director to helm a one-minute spot, and, from the first few shots, his stamp is clearly felt. “We approached the development of the Chevrolet trailer in the same way we would an actual movie—by thinking through the plot, characters and eventual outcome,” Raimi tells Ad Week (via /Film). “I’ve been in plenty of theaters where the audience is so concerned for the safety of the...

The saga of the attempt to update the film adaptation of Stephen King’s It finally looks set to end, as producer Roy Lee confirms plans to shoot the new movie later in 2016. The powerhouse producer of titles such as The Lego Movie and the How To Train Your Dragon films, as well as horror fare The Ring, The Grudge and Poltergeist, has been working on a remake of the infamous 1990 TV miniseries for some time, but it seems that the pieces are now falling into place.
Initially, Cary Fukunaga of True Detective fame was on board to co-write and direct the new adaptation, but ultimately departed the project, citing creative differences. Those differences were rumoured to centre on the type of MPAA rating the project would be aiming for. Now, however, Andy Muscietti – the director of 2013’s Mama – is in the director’s chair, and the project is back...

Sam Raimi is jumping from superheroes and Oz, to possibly helming the mooted remake of A Prophet.
After spending a number of years with superheroes, fantasy characters and demonic gypsies, Sam Raimi might find himself at the helm of a gritty crime thriller.
Variety reports that Raimi is in talks to direct Sony’s American remake of A Prophet, the masterful 2009 French film about a small-time Algerian convict who rises to become a criminal overlord inside the walls of a prison.
The script is being adapted by novelist Dennis Lehane, whose books include Mystic River and Shutter Island, and who recently wrote the screenplay for the indie crime drama The Drop (based on his short story Animal Rescue).
Raimi’s last film was 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and his other recent directorial efforts include Drag Me To Hell and the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

The coming-of-age genre has taken a few steps back since the 80’s. Studios aren’t putting the same amount of money into the genre as they used to. So, the genre has slowly drifted into indie territory. This is viewed as a bad thing, but my natural dissenting attitude disagrees. In fact, this is better for the genre. As an indie, there’s total creative control, there won’t be a suit saying to make it more generic or broad, as it’s easier to sell overseas. It’s just the filmmaker, their cast, and crew all collaborating on making the best possible product. Afterward, they can enter the film into Sundance, receive some positive buzz, then sell the movie to a distributor like Fox Searchlight. Just like what happened with The Way Way Back.

"They think I'm an adult." The Weinstein Company has put out a last minute new Us trailer for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet. You've probably heard of this one before, because it opened in Europe two years ago, in 2013, and has been delayed by The Weinstein Company for release until now. They're quietly dumping the new Jeunet film in select theaters this weekend. We've posted at least one trailer for this a few years ago, but another brand new trailer has just debuted for this week's opening. Kyle Catlett (who went on to star in Poltergeist after making this) plays T.S. Spivet in this quirky adventure about a ten-year-old cartographer who travels solo across the country. After creating the remake of a famed classic horror film, this director will set his sights on the adaptation of a famed horror video game.
Gil Kenan, who just directed the Poltergeist remake, is set to direct the adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, according to Deadline. This comes a few months after Warner Bros. announced their intentions to make the project.
The plot of the video game centered around a security guard who is challenged to survive his or her shift by keeping an eye on the security cameras and using them to track the animatronic animals that come to life and roam the restaurant at night.
Kenan has directed two features besides Poltergeist (Monster House and City of Ember), but got some recognition when the horror remake made a decent amount at the box office. It doesn’t hurt that horror is hit or miss and this...

It was revealed back in April that Warner Bros. Pictures had picked up the rights to the popular video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s, with plans for a feature film adaptation. Deadline reports that the film has found a director in Gil Kenan, whose big screen credits include Monster House, City of Ember and, most recently, the new Poltergeist. He’s also set to…

Gil Kenan is to direct the Five Nights At Freddy's movie, following his work on Monster House and Poltergeist...
It's been a few months now since Warner Bros picked up the movie rights to bring the videogame series Five Nights At Freddy's to the big screen. And it doesn't sound like the studio is messing about: it's found the director for the project.
Gil Kenan, who helmed this year's Poltergeist remake, as well as the excellent animated movie Monster House, is signing on the dotted line to direct the film. Furthermore, he'll pen the screenplay for Five Nights At Freddy's alongside Tyler Burton Smith.
The idea behind the game, if you've not had the pleasure, is to work as a security guard at a pizza restaurant. Er, a pizza restaurant where animatronic delights wander through the corridors, looking for victims. It's a simple concept, and one that's generated three games to date.

Survival horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s is coming to the big screen courtesy of Warner Bros., and now, the studio has found their director in Gil Kenan. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Kenan recently gave us the Poltergeist remake, which opened this summer to mediocre reviews and failed to leave much of a mark. That being said, the helmer isn’t necessarily a bad choice for the gig, and could bring something interesting to it.
For those unfamiliar with the game, it takes place in a restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. You step into the shoes of a security guard who must “survive his or her shift by keeping an eye on the security cameras and using them to track the animatronic animals that come to life and roam the restaurant at night.”

Books, comics and videogames are always ripe for movie adaptation, but Angry Birds aside, phone apps tend not to get the same sort of attention. So step forward Five Nights At Freddy's, which has just made the first preparatory steps in its long-jump from cell to screen. Warner Bros. have got the rights, and Gil Kenan will direct. The original 2014 Five Nights At Freddy's game takes place in a pizza restaurant. The player takes the part of a security guard, and the aim is to survive your night shift, pointing and clicking to protect yourself from attack by the pizzeria's not-so-decorative animatronic animals. Sequels have shifted the location to a theme park, and to a child's bedroom, where you have to keep checking the closets and looking under the bed.So it's a survival horror with a blackly humorous twist: one that lends itself to found footage (via the game's...

Originally intended for release in August, today (July 24) has seen the surprise release of the fourth Five Nights at Freddy's instalment, said to conclude a series of terrifying horror games that debuted just under a year ago.
Not only has it taken the world of YouTube by storm, but also Hollywood, with Warner Bros picking up the movie rights earlier this year. So why does it have everyone so terrified?
What is Five Nights at Freddy's?
Five Nights at Freddy's is a cult PC and mobile survival horror series created by developer Scott Cawthon. The original was dubbed as the "scariest game in years". Players are challenged with surviving a shift as a security guard while waves of deadly, animatronic robots - from a seemingly cute bear to a purple, long-eared bunny - are stalking the building looking for you.
It plays out in a simple but very unique way.

You'll be kicking yourself if you don't see "The Stanford Prison Experiment" in theaters. Seriously. And, no, I'm not just saying that because I happen to know director Kyle Patrick Alvarez socially or that it's a Sundance Jury Award-winning movie or that it depicts one of the most shocking events to occur at one of America's greatest Universities over the past fifty years.* The real reason is that besides the questions it raises about the human condition and our ability to descend to abject cruelty, "Stanford" features a once in a life time cast that will dominate Hollywood for the next 15 to 20 years.* *It also has earned strong reviews to date including a 71 grade on Metacritic and 78% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on true events, the new drama chronicles the 1971 psychological experiment that found Stanford University students sorted into the roles of prison guard or a generic prisoner. In theory,...

The recent advertisement campaign for Poltergeist that featured a terrifying clown has prompted 74 complaints.
The promo, which featured on buses and billboards, was labelled distressing and unsuitable for outdoor display by some.
Poltergeist review: Dismal remake delivers snores not shivers
However, the Advertising Standards Agency has since declared the advert "not irresponsibly targeted in outdoor media".
Despite the image being pretty creepy, the Asa also ruled that the ad was "not menacing... [and] included no other images likely to contribute to such an impression".

Well, so much for that. "True Detective" director Cary Fukunaga has dropped out of New Line's planned two-part adaptation of "It," forcing the studio to push the project indefinitely, according to The Wrap. Here's Stephen King's reaction to the news: The remake of It may be dead--or undead--but we'll always have Tim Curry. He's still floating down in the sewers of Derry. — Stephen King (@StephenKing) May 25, 2015 So what happened? Try everything. (Yes, even the "Poltergeist" remake could be a factor!) Here's a handy list of rumored reasons for the split. 1. Budget While New Line greenlit the first "It" installment at a reported $30 million, they allegedly cut the budget over Fukunaga's protests. 2. Location Fukunaga reportedly wanted to shoot the film in New York, despite the studio's wish to shoot in a more cost-effective location (read: one with generous tax incentives). (See: Reason #1.) 3. Studio change "It" was originally set up at Warner Bros.,...

Cary Fukunaga was going to film Pennywise the clown's Derry-based reign of terror this summer, but it's now been revealed that Fukunaga has left the director's chair of New Line's adaptation of Stephen King's It, with principal photography delayed as a result.
TheWrap reports the news of Fukunaga's departure from It, revealing that the True Detective director felt creatively compromised as the film approached the start of filming in mid-June. Production on the It movie is now postponed and it's not certain how soon Fukunaga will be replaced or when production on the project will move forward.
Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema (which took on the It film last May) recently requested budget cuts on the adaptation of Stephen King's It (initially approved for a $30 million budget) and are strongly considering trimming the project down to one film, which conflicted with Fukunaga and Chase Palmer's ambitious two-movie screenplay adaptation of the epic 1986 novel.

Opening in 3,972 locations Tomorrowland took in a lower than expected $40.7M just beating out Pitch Perfect 2 and its projected $37.9M in what proved to be a drowsy four-day Memorial weekend frame. The Brad Bird/George Clooney collaboration ended up the 22nd biggest Memorial opener of all time, sitting somewhat ignominiously behind 2013's Epic ($42.8M) and ahead of 2010's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time ($37.8M). Without a strong tentpole to anchor it the holiday frame looks to be down 19% Yoy. Internationally Tomorrowland opened in 65 territories (56% of the total available) and made $26.7M for a $58.8M worldwide cume. It opened at the #1 spot in Russia and Mexico, and has yet to open in major markets such as Spain, Australia, China, Japan, Korea and Brazil. Justin Lowe from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 70 grade. This is a thoroughly satisfactory rebooting of the 1982 horror classic. The director, Gil Kenan, has delivered a film that is intermittently very frightening indeed but also one that has humour and riotous energy, and pays plenty of attention to character. The new Poltergeist is one of the few horror movies written by a Pulitzer Prize-winner (David Lindsay-Abaire, the playwright behind Rabbit Hole), perhaps one reason why it is so much smarter than most recent teen-horror pics.

The Monster House and The City Of Ember director Gil Kenan talks to us about remaking horror classic Poltergeist.
Gil Kenan has now returned to the haunted house genre, after his debut feature Monster House, and the world of working with young actors once more, after his follow-up, The City Of Ember. The result is a new remake of Poltergeist, and we spoke about the film at length this week - touching on what was shorn away in the edit, how the 3D gets really sexy, and the influence of the actors on the screenplay, amongst plenty of other things.
First though, it started with Gil picking up the phone and, whether he intended to or not, evoking the so-called Curse of Poltergeist. Here’s our conversation from the very beginning.
