Jessica Lange is calling out the Hollywood film industry for prioritizing profits over creativity.
In an interview with Vulture, the topic of Warner Bros. Discovery shelving films as tax write-offs like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme came up. Lange said, “There should be a law against” such practices.
“We’re living in a corporate world, and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry,” she said in the interview. “So much of the industry now is not about the creative process. I mean, obviously this is not across the board, but there are many instances where I feel like the artistic impulse is overwhelmed by the corporate profit motive.”
She continued, “You look at some of the best films of the past year — what do they have in common? They’re not from America. My favorite was Anatomy of a Fall. How often do we get to see a film like that,...

David Zaslav, the boss of Warner Bros Discovery, has been praised for his “exceptional leadership” and given nearly $50m in 2023.
If you’re willing to be the kind of media boss willing to delete completed films as a tax write-off rather than release them? Well, it sure does pay the bills.
Just before the weekend, we learned that Warner Bros Discovery boss David Zaslav received $49.7m in remuneration in the year ending 2023. That’s an increase of 26.5 percent on the year before, and since he’s been in post in his job, he’s also benefitted from around $200m in stock option grants as well.
It’s an incredible reward for a CEO who’s overseen cost cutting throughout Warner Bros Discovery, apart from when it comes to his own salary. It’s under David Zaslav’s tenure that Warner Bros has earned a fresh and unwanted reputation for junking completed films,...

The adaptation of Stephen King’s vampire novel Salem’s Lot won’t be deleted as many had feared; but it won’t see the inside of a cinema either.
Around a month ago, we wrote about the decision Warner Bros was facing regarding the future of Salem’s Lot, the adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975’s vampire novel. Filming completed on Salem’s Lot all the way back in November of 2021, but the film has been in limbo ever since. In the interim, Warner Bros top brass have seemingly gone back and forth regarding the film’s fate as the studio has repeatedly shifted its strategy towards theatrical releases.
Originally, the film was set for a streaming-only release on the studio’s Max platform. Then, as Warner Bros moved away from those plans and began to focus on projects that could be released theatrically, it also began to delete films so that...

Some good news, ladies and gents – it appears as though the long-shelved big-screen adaption of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) won’t be deleted after all. Variety just broke the news that New Line and Warner Bros will put the movie out on its Max streaming service this year. While this was widely anticipated, in recent months, the buzz had turned pretty dark, with it heavily rumored that WB would be taking a loss on the film and deleting it, which is what they did with Batgirl. The Looney Tunes/live-action mash-up Coyote vs Acme seems to be going that way as well (unless John Cena’s comic performance at the Oscar swayed anyone).
This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set...

After Warner Bros. Discovery seemingly dropped the final anvil on the head of “Coyote vs. Acme,” screenwriter Samy Burch is speaking out about the shelved film.
Burch told IndieWire’s Vincent Perella on the red carpet for the 2024 Oscars that the conversation is “ongoing” about whether or not the film will see the light of day.
“As far as I know, it’s ongoing,” Burch said. “I think we’re all pretty heartbroken about it. We hope it will somehow find its home and not end up stuck in a vault for the rest of time. That would be a great resolution.”
While the story outline for the feature was reportedly leaked via Paste Bin in early March 2024, Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce the fate of the completed live-action and cartoon hybrid film. John Cena and Will Forte star in the film which was at first announced as...

Many developers who have worked with Adult Swim Games have come forward to reveal that their parent company, Warner Bros. Warner Bros. plans to delist games published under Adult Swim Games
In the past, Warner Bros. Discovery has scrapped various DC film projects as well, following a similar pattern. Once again, fans are furious with David Zaslav, the President and CEO of the company, for the decision as 18 or more games could be affected because of it. Fans fear that Zaslav’s decision could completely destroy the company as well as other companies under Warner Bros. Discovery.

Not every movie is going to cross the finish line, but studios such as Warner Bros. have come under fire for publically scrapping movies such as Batgirl, Coyote vs. Acme, and more. Per Deadline, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that his studio has done the same thing; they just haven’t been as public about it.
Bob Iger said that Disney has “killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough,” but didn’t elaborate on which projects those were or how far along they were. “We’re doing a lot. When we talk about improving our film slate, there are really three approaches,” Iger said. “One is you have to kill things you no longer believe. And that’s not easy in this business. Because either you’ve gotten started, you have some … costs. It’s a relationship with either your employees or with a creative community.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: season 3 of "Clone High" and "Jellystone!")
Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.
Of course, you realize, this means war.

Update: Will Forte has an update about the shelved Coyote vs. Acme movie that could make you feel like you’ve run face-first into a fake tunnel painted on a mountainside. WB executives killed the film in November, leading to social media outrage from cinephiles tired of seeing higher-ups scrap films in favor of a tax cut and other “benefits.” Forte knows people’s anger toward Warner’s decision to shelve Coyote vs. Acme and has some words to add to the ongoing conversation.
In a social media post this morning, Forte said, “I know that a lot of you haven’t gotten a chance to see our movie. And sadly, it’s a looking like you never will.” Forte also says that when he heard the film was getting deleted, he had yet to see it.

Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated science fiction thriller, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson has been in the news for quite a time. The Warner Bros. film, originally set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024, was pushed back to a new release date. The film written, directed, and produced by the Oscar-winning Parasite director was previously delayed indefinitely. It’s now set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025, per reports.
Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes
Adapted from author Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7, the film was expected to have Joon-ho put his trademark tonal shifts from the source material. Seeing Waner Bros. not much hyping the movie, many fans have a feeling that it might see the path like Coyote vs Acme, which has officially been shelved despite finishing the production in 2022, after earlier reports of it being uncanceled.

It’s no secret that Hollywood studios often employ big names and flashy announcements in order to create hype and distract from negative press. Warner Bros. might be hoping for that. By dangling the tantalizing prospect of a Tom Cruise-Quentin Tarantino collaboration in front of fans, they will mitigate the blow of scrapped projects like Coyote vs. Acme & Batgirl.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. is making big investments in projects by Tom Cruise and Quentin Tarantino, in addition to Joker 2. But are they luring these powerful figures in Hollywood with their own sinister motives?
In recent years, many assumed WB would become a studio non-grata, especially after Discovery purchased the studio and put CEO David Zaslav at the top of the apex, canceling completed films like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme. Why? Because the tax incentives were too good to resist.

Phil Lord has a question for David Zaslav:
Is it anticompetitive if one of the biggest movie studios in the world shuns the marketplace in order to use a tax loophole to write off an entire movie so they can more easily merge with one of the other biggest movie studios in the world? Cause it Seems anticompetitive.

Lord’s tweet, of course, is about “Coyote vs. Acme.” Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the completed film, a la “Batgirl” — although, unlike that DC Comics production, the Looney Tunes movie was supposedly shopped and according to some reports, received offers. Wbd denies the reports of official offers being made.

Daniels calls on Warner Bros boss David Zaslav to release Coyote Vs Acme, and “pretend this was all brilliant viral marketing”.
Pressure continues to grow on Warner Bros to find a way to let the film Coyote Vs Acme be seen. The fate of the movie at the moment looks grim: last year it was reported that the studio was simply planning to junk the film, and to write it off against tax.
For the studio, that means it’ll get some of its $70m investment in the production back. Directed by Dave Green and written by Samy Burch, the live action/animated hybrid film is not short of star power, with John Cena and Will Forte heading the cast list.
For them, and the other creatives, it’ll mean their film is basically deleted: should it leak out, Warner Bros would presumably have to repay its tax write off.

Warner Bros. is staying in business with Margot Robbie, the star and producer of 2023 box office champion Barbie. The studio has set a first look film deal with LuckyChap, the banner Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
Barbie stands as Warners’ highest grossing film of all time with $1.45 billion. It became a cultural phenomenon and landed eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture.
The deal is another feather in the cap for Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have focused on courting top talent, signing Tom Cruise to a much ballyhooed (but non-exclusive) deal, and bringing Ryan Coogler’s next movie to the studio (wooing him with a deal in which the rights revert to him after a period of time).

It looks like the Coyote vs. Acme movie starring John Cena won’t see the light of day after all. According to a report in TheWrap, the hybrid live-action/animated film hasn’t found a new distributor after Warner Bros. turned down offers from multiple would-be buyers.
This past November, Warner Bros. confirmed it was permanently shelving Coyote vs. Acme for a tax write-off. Following public outcry, the studio reversed course just days later, allowing the filmmakers to shop the project to other distributors.
However, TheWrap reports that Warner Bros. was looking for a hefty asking price, effectively torpedoing any chance of a sale. Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount reportedly submitted “handsome offers” to acquire the movie.
In a “take it or leave it” scenario, Warner Bros. held steadfast in seeking $75 – $80 million — double the amount of $35 – $40 million it would make on the tax write-off — and didn’t take any counteroffers.

Remember that brief moment in November of 2023 where we all thought Warner Bros. wasn't led by a soulless, money-hungry ghoul but by human beings who could see reason and allow "Coyote vs. Acme" to be shopped to other studios rather than delete it from existence? Well, that didn't last long.
In a damning report by TheWrap, it appears David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros. Discovery and eternal enemy of the Animaniacs, has reversed course and decided no one should ever watch the finished film "Coyote vs. Acme" even if other studios were willing to pay money for it. As producer Chris DeFaria told TheWrap, "They just want to get this behind them," referring to what he heard from a Warner Bros. executive in early January. "They want to close the books." According to TheWrap, Warner Bros. won't even announce that they were unable to find a home for the film.

As we close the book on 2023 and take stock of the best that this year delivered in movies and TV, let's not forget the bad guys. Villains are paradoxical characters; we love them precisely for how bad they can be, and if a story invests you in its villain, you can be cheering in equal measure as they rise and then as they fall. And then, of course, there's the sons of b*tches you just really want to see go down.
"Best villains" sounds similarly oxymoronic. So, why are these villains the ones who deserve the highlight? "Best villains" sounds similarly oxymoronic. So, why are these villains the ones who deserve the highlight? A new report spills a few details on the ongoing moves behind the scenes as Warner Bros hovers its finger threateningly over Coyote Vs Acme’s ‘delete button’.
A couple of weeks ago, we covered the widely-circulated story that Warner Bros’ Coyote vs. Acme may have avoided the same sad fate as Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt .
By ‘sad fate’ of course, we mean the tireless work of lots of creative people getting deleted by Warner Bros as part of a tax write-off. When the studio announced it would be doing the same thing again with its live action/animation hybrid project, Coyote vs. Acme, things swiftly tuned ugly, at least according to accounts that you’ve likely seen in the trades.
Filmmakers across the board reportedly cancelled scheduled meetings with Warner Bros and one unnamed filmmaker told Deadline: “We have a project over at Warners in development. We’re...

By canceling movies like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme, Warner Bros. has made itself the target of much disdain and mockery from moviegoers. To sink hundreds of millions of dollars into projects only to decide that, no, we won’t release them after all, is quite a move. Some might call it insane or a power trip or irresponsible. But some might call it courageous. Ok, it’s just one guy that’s saying that: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav, who seems more concerned about tax write-offs than releasing films.
Speaking at an event this week (via IndieWire), David Zaslav said of the discarded films, “We’ve spent the $100 million dollars and if we don’t release it, it’s gone. We don’t have any real benefit from it…The question is, should we take certain of these movies and open them in the theater and...

Some have already seen a screening of the Warner Bros. squashed live-action hybrid animated movie Coyote vs. Acme, and they’re giving a big endorsement on social. As we reported the Warner Bros new motion picture administration of Michael De Luca, Pam Abdy and animation head Bill Damaschke axed the film for a $30M tax writedown. However, now the movie is being shopped with Apple, Amazon and Netflix taking interest. We hear that some of those streamers are catching the movie in the near future.
We also hear that the screening, which drew a huge applause at the end, and had wall-to-wall laughs, had Nun 2 Michael Chaves in attendance as well as Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once filmmaker Daniel Scheinert, in addition to pic’s cast of Will Forte, Lana Candor and P.J. Byrne and Coyote vs. Acme director Dave Green.

Texas congressman Joaquin Castro has taken to X to slam Warner Bros Discovery for axing the $70M Coyote vs. Acme for a reported $30M tax writeoff.
That said, as we first reported, the studio is changing course this week and screening the film for potential buyers, i.e. Amazon Prime (a leading contender), Apple and Netflix. This pivot by studio brass was made after a weekend in which the studio’s phone rang off the hook as the creative community complained about the canceling of the finished film. There also was an outcry by the pic’s composer Steven Price, among others online.
“The @Wbd tactic of scrapping fully made films for tax breaks is predatory and anti-competitive,” wrote Castro, who has protested Wbd before on antitrust issues.
“As the Justice Department and @FTC revise their antitrust guidelines they should review this conduct,” he continued.

The shelved Coyote vs Acme film may see the light of day after all. Amid industry outcry that WB was shelving yet another film, the studio has begun screening the movie for streaming services. Deadline reports that Prime Video seems to be the frontrunner as far as acquiring the movie goes. The shelving of the completed film has spurred lots of anger within the industry, as unlike the previously shelved Batgirl or Scoob’s Holiday Haunt, Coyote Vs Acme was complete and scheduled for a theatrical release.
Not only that, but reports suggest that the film was testing very well, with composer Steven Price roasting the company on Twitter for their “bizarre anti-art studio shenanigans.”

With Road Runner-like speed, Warner Bros. Discovery has reversed its decision to bury Coyote vs. Acme.
The studio will now allow director Dave Green to shop his live-action/animation hybrid movie to other potential buyers instead of shelving the project for a tax write-off, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Amazon is said to be a contender, with screenings for potential buyers taking place this month. Puck was first to report the news of the reversal.
The move comes days after the The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Coyote vs. Acme would become Warners third already-shot film to get shelved after previously nixing nearly completed projects Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt in August 2022.
After Batgirl and Scoob! were dumped, a group of filmmakers with business at the studio started a text chain — a support group of sorts — to share their hopes and their anxieties, as well as encouragement and tips for navigating the studio.

The scrapped “Coyote Vs. Acme” has now garnered a filmmakers vs. Warner Bros. campaign on social media.
On private Facebook group Crew Stories, “Coyote Vs. Filming for the Coyote vs. Acme movie starring John Cena completed in 2022, but audiences won’t ever get to see the finished product. On Thursday, Warner Bros. confirmed that the film has been permanently shelved in favor of a tax write-off.
A Looney Tunes hybrid film produced by James Gunn, Coyote vs. Acme was first announced in December 2020 and reportedly cost around $72 million to make, with principal photography wrapping last year in New Mexico. It was originally slated for release on Max on July 21st, 2023, and later considered for theatrical release, but was eventually removed from the Warner Bros. release calendar in April 2022 (with the July 21st release date ultimately going to Barbie instead). Now, the confirmation that it’s been shelved is arriving after a change-up at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and the ascent of its new leader, Bill Damaschke, who is seeking to prioritize theatrical releases over streaming titles.

Both the WGA strike and most recently the SAG-AFTRA strike may be officially over, but I hope you didn't think that meant the studios would be finished with their nonsense just yet. Many will remember that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made himself public enemy #1 earlier this year with some particularly poorly-considered remarks (although Disney's Bob Iger subsequently waded into the fray and did everything he could to vie for the crown himself). Well, believe me, it's my deepest displeasure to report that Zaslav is, unfortunately, at it once more.
Barely a year after Warner Bros. incited all sorts of outrage over shelving high-profile productions such as "Batgirl" and "Scoob 2" for a tax write-off, dismissing the tireless work of countless artists with the flick of a wrist and preventing anyone from actually seeing the fruit of their labor, the studio has gone and done it all over again. This time,...

In another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros Discovery to kill movies, we hear on very good authority that Warner Bros will not be releasing the hybrid live-action/animated Coyote vs. Acme, with the conglom taking an estimated $30M write-down on the $70M production. We understand the write-down for the pic was applied to the recently reported Q3.
This reps the third time that Zaslav’s Warner Bros has pulled the plug on a movie greenlighted by the previous Warner Media administration, the other two being the Max-destined Batgirl and the animated Scoob Holiday Haunt!
The difference here is that Coyote vs. Acme is a completed movie with very good test scores, 14 points above the family norm. We’re told that the cash-strapped Warners finds that it’s not worth the cost to release the film theatrically or to sell to other buyers (and there are parties who...

A little over a year after the shelving of Batgirl sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault.
Warners no longer plans to release Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action, CG animation hybrid that completed principal photography last year in New Mexico. The move follows veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke taking over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of al time,” filmmaker Dave Green wrote on X after this story initially published. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. … Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores.”
The feature, which sources believe cost around $72 million to make, had key Warners talent involved in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Sister Wives star Kody Brown repeatedly claimed the Brown family did not have the money to pay off their Coyote Pass property. This was why the clan reportedly never built on the Arizona land they first purchased in 2018. However, in the season 18 episode “The Writing Is on the Wall,” the Brown family patriarch is wearing a vintage Rolex watch reportedly worth $6K and a new ring, leaving fans frustrated by what they say are his no money “lies.”
Kody Brown sports an expensive watch and ring in ‘Sister Wives’ season 18, ep. 8
Meri Brown wasn’t the only person noticing Kody Brown’s expensive new jewelry in the latest episode of Sister Wives, season 18. So did fans, who remarked on his new ring and an expensive vintage Rolex watch easily visible throughout an interaction at Meri’s home with her and Robyn Brown.
The ring is reportedly a $1200 David Yurman design.

Sister Wives has followed the saga of Coyote Pass for several seasons, but viewers are still discovering new information about the property. While the season 18 premiere on Aug. 20 was disappointing, one interesting tidbit of information did come out of it. Janelle Brown let it slip that the Browns had an unconventional financing situation regarding Coyote Pass. Kody’s second wife noted that the original landowner carried the loan on the property. This type of financing is known as an owner-financed property. So what exactly is it, and why did the Brown family use it to finance their Coyote Pass purchase?
What is owner-financed property?
In the season opener of Sister Wives, Janelle Brown revealed that the original owner of the Coyote Pass property financed the loan on the property. The information was news to Sister Wives fans and has led many to question. So, what is an owner-financed property? We did a bit of digging.

"How far would you jump... for the one you love." Gravitas has released a trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Coyote, made by filmmaker Dustin Curtis Murphy as his feature debut. It'll be out to watch on VOD next week. A story of forbidden love in a dystopian future where teleportation tech enables two refugees to escape genocide. When they trust the wrong back-alley teleporter, Ekaterina and Anya end up separated. In a desperate attempt to be reunited again, they're entwined in an insidious human trafficking ring involving corrupt politicians. Starring The Witcher actress Therica Wilson-Read and Absentia actress Borislava Stratieva, plus Ruhtxjiaih Bellenea, Ailish Symons, Tian Chaudry, Beruce Khan, and Richard Glover. The filmmakers say it's a film where "LGBTQ refugees [are] seen as the heroes they are... We need to push these types of stories to the forefront." Yes, agreed, but this looks bad and no one is going to watch it anyway.

Christopher Nolan dropped a bomb in September 2021 when revealing he would make his next film, Oppenheimer, for Universal Pictures after spending years turning out one box office hit after another for Warner Bros., including the Dark Knight trilogy. The split occurred after the studio’s former owner, WarnerMedia, made streaming a priority over theatrical amid the pandemic. Within days, Universal said it would release Nolan’s historical drama about the making of the atomic bomb on July 21, 2023. The date was no coincidence: the mid-summer month has long been a lucky launching pad for the revered filmmaker.
Warners had already staked out the same weekend for John Cena’s Looney Tunes film Coyote vs. Acme before Oppenheimer came along, but the studio switched course in April of 2022, and pulled Coyote from the calendar, announcing it would instead open Barbie on July 21, 2023.
At the time, most analysts didn’t give the contest...
