Remember that time that John Oliver spent $13,700 in a bidding war for wax figures of U.S. presidents against Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Rachel Maddow? That super wonky and pricy move begat Oliver’s movie trailer for his ideal Warren G. Harding biopic, featuring Anna Kendrick and Laura Linney acting the hell out of their […]

DC Films and Warner Bros. probably didn’t want it to be this way. “Justice League” is supposed to be the centerpiece showcase of their cinematic universe, yet the film has been just as plagued with second guessing as “Suicide Squad“. Even had Zack Snyder not left for personal reasons during the film’s post-production, there still would’ve been massive reshoots to try and fix the movie, and Joss Whedon still would’ve been employed to write additional material — enough that he now has a screenplay credit on the movie.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers from “Star Trek: Discovery” Episode 3, “Context Is for Kings.”]
After getting diverted en route to a prison mine, coming on board the Discovery isn’t Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) biggest surprise. She’s also shocked to see former Shenzhou crewmate Saru (Doug Jones) is on board, this time as the First Officer. The Kelpien is a brand new alien race that’s been introduced to the series, but not much is known about them except that they’re a prey species.

ABC’s fall dramedy Kevin (Probably) Save the World is taking on a less holy moniker, having changed its title from the far more biblical The Gospel of Kevin.

“Kevin (Probably) Saves the World captures the tone better than the old title,” executive producer Michele Fazekas (Agent Carter) explained at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Sunday. “I think people were thinking that the show was one thing. The tone of it is the hardest thing to understand, or to capture. I think this actually works quite well.

One of the most anticipated superhero events of the year is “Justice League” and a big new trailer is here to get fans excited.
Fresh off the critical and box office success of “Wonder Woman,” DC Films is pushing “Justice League” as the cornerstone of an interconnected franchise featuring Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Superman and looks to be continuing the serious tone imparted by “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Wonder Woman”.

Today is a big day for Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe. After a bit of a mixed year for them (Wonder Woman was a huge success, but behind-the-scenes drama seems to be plaguing their productions), they could use a successful Hall H panel to show that they have more going on than another solid Wonder Woman movie.
While it remains to be seen whether or not they’ll be able to deliver, the official Justice League Twitter account posted a new poster that some comic book fans may appreciate.
Check it out below:
On a surface level, it may look a bit odd, but some fans may note that it resembles an Alex Ross painting. With it’s lighting, and the positioning of their faces, they very much look like the look of the heroes you’d see in his lineup. Admittedly, it’s not a poster that...

I'm currently waiting in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con waiting for the big Warner Bros. panel to start and a poster and banner for Justice League was released that you can see above and below. It features the most of the member of the Justice League team. It also comes with the tagline, “You Can’t Save The World Alone." The poster was heavily inspired by the art of Alex Ross.
The one main character that's not in the poster is Superman, and I hope that we get our first look at him during the panel today. We'll make sure to fill you in on any details as soon as we can. Internet access in Hall H is kinda shitty.
Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg,...

Today’s a big day for the DC Extended Universe, as Warner Bros. is set to host their panel at San Diego Comic-Con in just a few short hours, where they’re expected to drop a new trailer for Justice League, give us our first look at Aquaman and hopefully, peel back the lid on some of the other big superhero flicks they’ve got brewing in development.
There’s a lot to look forward to, then, and now, to get the hype going a bit early, the studio’s rolled out a brand new poster for Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon’s aforementioned flick, featuring the titular League united and promoting the idea of teamwork with the tagline: You Can’t Save The World Alone. Admittedly, it’s a bit bland as far as promotional material goes, and definitely not our favorite poster for the film, but it’s nice...

Daniel Craig is on the record in saying he’d “rather slash [his] wrists” than play James Bond again, but a new report suggests that the actor will return to the franchise after all. Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Despicable Me 3 put up some mild fireworks last weekend at the box office with $72.4 million, while Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver over-performed with $30 million during its five-day opening. Hurray for original movies! This week sees one of the most anticipated movies of the summer open in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spidey is now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (McU), but how many reboots of the webslinger can we take? Read on to find out true believers.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
What we are excited about: Spider-Man is home. The cleverly titled Homecoming is the first feature-length Spider-Man adventure to be part of the McU. After making a brief, but insanely fun appearance in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland dawns the red and blue tights as the third different Peter Parker in just ten years.

Comedian and podcast personality Adam Carolla has teamed up with conservative radio host Dennis Prager to make “No Safe Spaces,” a documentary about political correctness at universities in the United States. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two have been filming at various colleges, including California State University, Northridge —where they were initially not allowed inside — and U.C. Berkeley, where Ann Coulter had to cancel her speech in April as a result of threats of violence.
Carolla and Prager have started an Indiegogo campaign, looking to raise $500,000 for their film, which will then be matched by the same amount by Capital Research Center’s Dangerous Documentaries, as reported by THR. “No Safe Spaces” is a criticism against universities’ “safe spaces,” which refers to educational institutions offering a safe place for distressed students who may be victims of hate violence or speech.

Michael Shannon makes a lot of movies. He appeared in eight of them just last year, earning an Academy Award nod for “Nocturnal Animals” (clearly an act of penance for his “Night Before” snub the previous year), and is slated for several more before 2018 rolls around. Still, he doesn’t necessarily like being on film sets: “They basically are like a petri dish for boredom and silliness,” Shannon said during Vulture Festival yesterday.
With that in mind, he apparently prefers to do his work and mind his own business. “I try to not say much,” the actor continued. “People think, Oh, you’re in character or whatever. It’s like, ‘No. I don’t come here to talk.’ I just want to say what’s written and go home.

Chris Cornell died May 17 in Detroit hotel at the age of 52. It’s a passing far too soon for anyone, much less a singer who leaves behind the cultural impact of Soundgarden, supergroup Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave. But in his solo work, Cornell also left a particular cinematic legacy as the co-writer and performer of “You Know My Name,” the Grammy-nominated theme song for 2006 James Bond film “Casino Royale.”

There are many things that make this James Bond reboot (the first to star Daniel Craig) one of the better popcorn movies of the young millennium. Craig’s steely lead turn, Eva Green’s alluring subversion of Bond girl tropes, and a thrilling parkour chase sequence anchor the film from its opening black-and-white sequence to its mythology-looping close.
And all of it is jump-started by that Cornell song.

After the start of last week’s bidding war with five Hollywood studios, rumors are swirling that as producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of Eon Productions (franchise co-owners with MGM) move closer to nailing down a creative direction for “Bond 25″ with screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the Bond team is leaning indie with their list of potential directors.
Word is, the producers are so pleased with”Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” directed by Scotsman Paul McGuigan (“Sherlock,” “Lucky Number Slevin,” “Victor Frankenstein”), that he too is under consideration. Annette Bening stars as actress Gloria Grahame, who falls in love with a young actor (Jamie Bell).
Broccoli has long preferred to hire directors with arthouse cred over mainstream action specialists, from Oscar-winning “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes (“Spectre” and “Skyfall”) to “Monster’s Ball” director Marc Forster (“Quantum of Solace”). After weeks of anticipation for the release of The Gospel Truth (April 14), it was just a matter of time until I traveled up to Brighton to see The King Blues on their latest tour.
Packed into the Haunt near the seafront, the venue was full of eager fans waiting to see Itch and the gang storm the stage and entertain us with a solid two hour set. Before they even got on stage we had the pleasure of meeting the main man himself at the merch stall, obviously we had to say hello and join the queue for a picture!
Not long after we had probably blinded the poor guy with the flash from my iPhone, we made our way to the bar for a couple of drinks before the set. Now, me and my friend Nick had both seen Tkb on various occasions, but our friends Rach and Jazz hadn’t.

A Hollywood bidding war began this week for distribution rights to “Bond 25,” led by Sony — which co-financed and released worldwide the last four Daniel Craig movies, grossing a franchise record close to $3.5 billion — and rival studios Warner Bros., Fox, Universal, and prestige indie Annapurna.
While that means Daniel Craig is closer to signing on for his fifth and final Bond appearance, one insider said the distribution decision will take months; that means we might have to wait until 2019 for “Bond 25.” And there’s still an A-list director to be signed, with the departure of Sam Mendes; contenders could include Kathryn Bigelow, Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Susanne Bier.
In terms of Bond bragging rights, distribution is more about prestige than profit, since the franchise is co-owned by MGM and Eon Productions (run by half-sibling producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli), which control 75% of the profits.

There will never be another Oscar winner like “O.J.: Made in America.” Each year, a month after the Academy Awards, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences meet to debate and approve any rules changes for the next year’s Oscars. As expected, following the controversy over Espn’s five-part, eight-hour documentary feature, the Academy is cracking down on multi-part or limited “series.”

1. “Dear White People” Season 1 (available April 28)
Why Should I Watch It? “Dear White People” is based on Justin Simien’s 2014 Sundance sensation of the same name, pulling characters and plot lines from the satirical comedy that helped introduce us to the glory that is Tessa Thompson. While the “Creed” star won’t be returning, other breakouts from the film are, and the core story — of a predominantly white Ivy League university facing a heated racial debate after a misguided blackface Halloween party — has been refined to fit a serialized format. It is hilarious, sharp, and so timely it hurts. Don’t miss it.
