December was a slow month for horror additions to the Netflix streaming library, but we wanted to let readers know about a handful of new titles that were recently released, including The Devil Inside, Night of the Living Dead: Reanimation and The Grudge 3. Don’t forget that all completed seasons of Supernatural are still available on Netflix, along with Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead.
There are also four seasons of The Twilight Zone available, which we always recommend to horror fans that don’t own the entire series already. Below is a list of many of the newly released titles, along with titles we previously covered. Keep in mind that this list is from the Us Netflix streaming library and may differ depending on the deals Netflix has in place in other countries.

The horror genre has lost another director at way too young an age. The name James Isaac may not jump immediately out at you, but the man has delivered some of the most fun and obscure flicks of our generation.
Isaac has passed away at the age of just 51 due to a rare form of blood cancer. His work included The Horror Show, Jason X, Skinwalkers and Pig Hunt. Before taking the director's chair, he also had an incredible FX career, working on titles like Return of the Jedi, Gremlins, The Fly and House II: The Second Story.
The news was broken today on Twitter from Jason X scribe Todd Farmer, who wrote: "Rip Jimmy Isaac. A wonderful man, husband and father. I never tear up. I thought."
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to extend our deepest of condolences to Isaac's friends, family, and constituents.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Jim Isaac. He directed Jason X, The Horror Show Aka House 3, Pig Hunt, and Skin Walkers. It was reported a few months back that Jim had been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, and that the intense treatments were taking a toll on his body. Unfortunately, tonight he lost the fight. I read about his passing via Todd Farmer's Twitter account. As you know, Todd worked with Jim on Jason X. Our con…...

"Survivor: One World" is still Troyzan vs. The Women - can he pull off a huge upset?
Reward Challenge
It sounds like it's a case of the winner getting to pick people to take with them and Kim smartly identifies that sending Troy, Alicia and Christina back to camp together would be a mistake. When they get to the challenge, Alicia hilariously says she has crazier hair than her dummy - yes, she does. She looks like the wildling lady who looks after Bran on "Game of Thrones."
The challenge is answering questions about the tribemates. Then you guess what the group said as a whole. When you get one right, you get to chop someone's rope. Every rope has three chops and then it drops their dummies into the fire. The winner gets a picnic.
Question 1 is who does not deserve to still be here - group says Christina.

On the hunt for horror, I’ll throw just about anything on the list of things to watch. As a huge fan of Razorback, I must have, at the time, figured “sweet, a giant killer hog!” Makes sense, who doesn’t love a giant hog tearing up people and eating the remains? Late one night I saw a few minutes of this flick on IFC. It was especially bloody and violent, though I didn’t see any hogs to speak of, but not wanting to ruin the experience of watching the film from A to Z, I threw it in my Netflix queue. This flick, which carries the Frightfest banner, follows a group of friends who head out on a, you guessed it, pig hunt. Our crew, led by good guy John Hickman, formerly of the area, are soon joined by some of his old “friends,” a couple of ne-er-do-well hillbillies. The...

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"The Thin Red Line" (1998)
Directed by Terrence Malick
Released by Criterion Collection
No, you won't be getting the hours of deleted Adrien Brody or George Clooney footage from Malick's World War II epic, but this Criterion version is most certainly an upgrade from the previous bare-bones DVD edition with 14 minutes of outtakes, new interviews with Sean Penn and composer Hans Zimmer, among others from the cast and crew, an audio commentary with cinematographer John Toll, production designer Jack Fisk and producer Grant Hill and more.
"7 Days" (2010)
Directed by Daniel Grou
Released by Mpi Home Video
French Canadian horror author Patrick Senécal adapts his own novel to celluloid about a doctor (Claude Legault) who intercepts the man (Remy Girard) who raped and murdered his young daughter and turns the tables on him in a cabin in the woods. Edgar Allan Poe. His name isn’t just synonymous with horror; he’s one of the prized few who have given it artistic validity. And if you want to adapt any of his work, you damn well better do it right, or fear the wrath of his rabid fan base—always a tough crowd. Stepping up to the plate is The Tomb, a modern reimagining of Poe’s short story “Ligeia” and one of the films in the Fangoria FrightFest lineup (along with Pig Hunt, Fragile, Road Kill, Dark House, The Haunting, Grimm Love and Hunger), which are currently available exclusively through Blockbuster stores and Blockbuster By Mail, as well as digitally via Blockbuster On Demand.

Horror sometimes makes good bedfellows with other genres, producing strange and exciting genetic mashups. Evil Dead II is a horror/comedy with both chainsaw dismemberment and Three Stooges-style slapstick. Near Dark is a horror/Western with bloodsucking vampires roving the desert as lawless bandits. Pig Hunt is…well, not that easy to describe. While the straight synopsis would tell you it’s about a group of people who go into the forests of Northern California to hunt down an SUV-size boar, that really doesn’t do the film justice.

Depending on your definition, horror films have been around for about a century now. There is a lot of film history to study, pilfer, and learn from. Still, with all of that information at their fingertips, some director's try to put a little bit of everything into their films, thus rendering them confusing and lifeless. Pig Hunt is a fun little horror film, that tries to introduce three different antagonists, but none of them get the proper screen time they deserve. Potential is missed in almost every scene, and had they decided on one central villian, this film might've ended up as a DVD classic. It has the feel of an 80's film, mostly for daring to have a 3,000 lb wild boar, a family of revenge seeking hillbillies, and a murderous, marijuana-growing cult, in one film.

Calista Flockhart stars as Amy, an American nurse who is sent over from London to help out and discovers that the eight kids who still reside there believe something invisible — and menacing — is haunting the premises. Richard Roxburgh and Spanish actress Elena Anaya, both previously seen in Van Helsing, co-star.

Lightning Entertainment picked up the Australian road movie Road Train back in 2009; now, this distribution company has renamed the film Road Kill for North American audiences and released a second trailer for the film, which shows the truck's deadly cargo. This feature will be a part of the Fangoria Frightfest along with several other films beginning in June of this year and Frightfest includes Pig Hunt, Fragile, Grimm Love, Dark House, Hunger, The Haunting, and The Tomb. Have a look at the latest for Road Kill with this clip in which more of the film's gruesome stylings are displayed.
The synopsis for Road Kill here:
"Four young friends on a camping adventure in outback Australia are run off the road by an erratically driven road train - a massive three-trailer truck. With their own vehicle wrecked, and the road train stopped, the friends march off to remonstrate with the drivers.

Cool news from the cool people over at Fangoria: this summer they will be distributing eight horror films in a multi-platform program with the label "FrightFest". Through partnering with Lightning Media these films will be made available on DVD, Video-On-Demand and Digital Download.
Even more cool: on the FrightFest website readers can vote which of these films should get a theatrical release in July. Right now the site just shows the selected titles but trailers, clips and featurettes should follow soon.
And the titles are not to be sneezed at: James Isaac's "Pig Hunt", Jaume Balagueró's "Fragile", Steven Hentges' "Hunger", Dean Francis' "Road Train", Darin Scott's "Dark House", Martin Weisz' "Grimm Love", Elio Quiroga's "No-Do: The Beckoning", and finally Michael Staininger's "Ligeia".
Something for everyone I'm sure you'll agree. Granted, some of these titles are quite old and well known already from the festival circuit (wow,...

- Remember when the U.S. Copyright Group launched thousands of law suits against people who had downloaded their clients' films? And no one really cared since the infringed titles included films like Uwe Boll's Far Cry? Well, now that Voltage Pictures has enlisted the group to sue thousands of people who downloaded The Hurt Locker, I have a feeling a few more people are going to be a little on edge by the time this sentence sinks in.
- DreamWorks has picked up film rights to the board game Monsterpocalypse and are apparently courting Tim Burton to be the, as Deadline puts it, "creative catalyst".

A few months ago when we did our article about "Fagnoria" and all their troubles it was done with a very heavy heart. "Fango" is and always has been an integral part of the horror community and we hope it stays that way...
Better and hopefully brighter days are coming and with the newly appointed Chris Alexander taking over the role as editor-in-chief not only have we seen slight psychical changes to the collectible horror rag but now they are basically taking on FEARnet in what looks like a media onslaught.
From a new website FrightFest website (click here) to offering eight new feature films, including Pig Hunt, Fragile, Grimm Love, Dark House, Hunger, Road Kill, The Haunting and The Tomb. They don't just stop there. Videos on demand to a constant stream of digital downloads they are trying to once again make the horror fan the central point of their existence.

Long-time horror staple Fangoria announced today that it has teamed up with multi-faceted distributor Lightning Media to launch a new film distribution entity named "Fangoria FrightFest," and plans to release eight horror feature films under the banner via a wide-ranging DVD, VOD and digital download deal, with fans additionally choosing one of the selected films for a theatrical distribution run.
Listed among the eight releases are two Latin horror titles: Fragile (finally!) from Rec and Rec 2 helmer Jaume Balagueró (word is there will be a third in that series - 'Rec Apocalypse,' but I digress), and 'The Haunting,' which is fronted by Elio Quiroga. Both directors hail from Spain, a treasure trove of great horror films the last decade.
A similar deal was announced recently between After Dark Films, Lionsgate, and Syfy under the 'After Dark Originals' moniker (read 'Adf Ties Not With Lionsgate & Syfy'). Unfortunately,...

I'm really pulling for Fangoria Magazine these days. Chalk it up to childhood nostalgia if you want, but some of my earliest genre memories were peeling through the pages of Fango and being absolutely mesmerized by what I saw. Their new magazine layout is certainly a step in the right direction, and that's not all Fango has up its sleeve.
Today Fangoria launches FrightFest, a partnership with Lightning Media to distribute independent horror films via DVD, Video on Demand and Digital Download. They'll be bringing us some wicked titles such as Pig Hunt, Fragile, Grimm Love, Dark House, Hunger, Road Kill, The Haunting and The Tomb.
If you stop by the official FrightFest site, you'll have the opportunity to check out film trailers and other extra material while casting a vote for your favorite film. The winning flick will then go on to receive a big-screen theatrical release in July!

Shooting has begun in Nova Scotia on Haven , SyFy's original series created by Stephen King. Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour, Richard Donat and John Dunsworth are starring. At the helm of the pilot episode is Adam Kane whose career path has guided him through feature films as a cinematographer ( The Boondock Saints , Pig Hunt ) and television as a director (he helmed the "after school special" episode of Supernatural ). The series kicks off this summer following FBI agent Audrey Parker (Rose), who arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine on a routine case...only to discover that this curious enclave has served as a longtime refuge for people who are afflicted with a remarkable range of supernatural abilities. Bryant will play Nathan Wuornos, the wry local cop who soon...

Pig Hunt wrapped up some film festival coverage in 2009 by attending the Chicago Horror Film Festival and the film has been released already in the United Kingdom, but what of North America? The film, unfortunately, does not have North American distribution yet, despite being completed in 2008 in Boonville California. That is right, an American made horror film has been released in the United Kingdom before North America. How is that for globalization?
In the trailer there is much action, much bumbling, and some good laughs, as a group of rednecks terrorize some city-slickers. Check out the 3000 lb boar below.
The synopsis for Pig Hunt here:

2009. It was pretty much as crappy a year for horror movies as it was for the economy. There were, however, some really high points to help balance out all the drivel that was put out there in theatres as well as on home video, and they are to be celebrated, even though technically a couple of them are not even from this year.

Generally speaking, I’m not really a fan of the whole “animals run amok” genre. There are a few exceptions to the rule, of course, but for the most part, I find them to be somewhat lacking in the horror department. However, having recently witnessed James Isaac’s enjoyable 2008 creature feature “Pig Hunt,” I’ve been secretly craving more animal-related mayhem. Enter Jeong-won Shin’s Korean monster flick “Chaw,” a self-described “dark comedy” about a man-eating boar and the poor schmucks who must contend with it. I’d almost completely forgotten about the film, that is, until I spied a small article about its upcoming Region 1 release over at 24 Frames Per Second. Here’s a lengthy synopsis, courtesy of YesAsia: Shock and fear wash over the quiet, peaceful town of Sameri when ecologist (Soo Ryeon) discovers the body parts of a girl in the mountains. Officer Kim Kang Su (Uhm...

John Woo hasn’t exactly lit up the screen with his Hollywood films has he? Face/Off is enjoyable I guess but the less said about Windtalkers, Paycheck and even Mission Impossible 2 the better really. It’s a shame because the man is capable of directing action sequences better than anybody else on the planet.
Red Cliff sees John Woo look to Chinese history for inspiration. It’s a sweeping, magnificent epic that looked amazing on the big screen.
The Han dynasty is coming to an end in third century China so as a last ditch attempt for survival the Emperor raises an army that stretches close to a million to attack the two neighbouring kingdoms.
Red Cliff boasts beautiful cinematography and action set pieces. It’s great to see a Director back at the top of his game.
Looks incredible on Blu-Ray.

While there’s been no shortage of horror festivals in recent years, it’s cool to see another one taking shape, this one in Seattle, Wa. If you’re in the area, or you’re up for a road trip, this one looks like it’s going to be worth checking out!

You can head over to the Mifff’s official site for more details, but keep on reading for ticket info and scheduling highlights!

Sean "The Butcher" Smithson here. Sometime scribe for these here pages at Dread Central, sometime horror host, sometime jungle explorer, sometime exorcist, even sometime astronaut. But this time I'm here reporting on what it's like to help organize events and program films for a horror convention. Or at least, what it was like for me at this particular con, CryptiCon Seattle 2009.
First off, there was an entire season of bi-weekly meetings, where we slowly zeroed in on having the vendors tables sold (it's this that mainly pays for the con expenses), hashed out which guests we'd like to invite (and then the rigmarole of who confirms, second choices, etc), and brainstormed ideas for panels and events. A lot of the things came together slow-as-molasses at first, then built to a torrent of hurry-up-and-get-it-done in the final weeks. For instance, two out of three of my tent pole films, which I...
