How is a new pope selected when needed? Well, an election is held at the Vatican. But there’s quite a bit of secrecy surrounding it. In “Conclave,” that secrecy is the focus of everything, following the mysterious process while untangling a proper Vatican mystery in the process.
Starring Ralph Fiennes, the film tells the story of one Cardinal who’s in charge of leading the process to elect a new pope after the original unexpectedly dies. But in doing so, he discovers a whole lot of unexpected information about his peers.
The film comes from “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger, has a knockout cast and has become a significant awards frontrunner. Most recently, “Conclave” took home Best Film at the BAFTAs, and claimed prizes from the Art Director’s Guild and the Costume Designers Guild, as well as the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Going into the fourth season of “The Righteous Gemstones,” costume designer Christina Flannery didn’t know that this year was going to be the show’s swan song — or perhaps more accurately, after Episode 8, its gator song. Series creator and star Danny McBride kept that information close to the chest during the prep process, but Flannery told IndieWire that knowing whether or not there would be more “Gemstones” hardly mattered.
By the time the show had gotten to the civil war prelude that opens Season 4, to say nothing of the troubled production process of “Teenjus” and Eli’s (John Goodman) equally troubled retirement, there was no bucket list left for the costume design team. The challenge and the joy of designing for “The Righteous Gemstones” is that it has been maximalist from the very start. Finding new degrees of colorful suits, flowing capes, and animal print jumpsuits supported the show’s tone from the beginning,...

If you're seeing an American film about the American military, the chances are good that it won't be an antiwar polemic. American productions that feature soldiers and military equipment and/or explore the inner workings of the U.S. armed services typically have to cooperate with the Pentagon in order to get a movie made. The Army, the Navy, the Marines, etc., often provide a film production with uniforms, vehicles, weapons, or even training for its actors, under the stipulation that the military be allowed to give its approval of the script. War films can, of course, be made without the approval of the U.S. military, but if they're critical of the U.S. armed forces in any way, the government will openly sneer at them.
It's easy to find hit films that vaunt the military. "Captain Marvel," for instance, came hand-in-hand with Air Force recruitment videos, and even...

Good Chaos, the U.K. production banner founded by industry veteran Mike Goodridge, has signed a first look deal with Searchlight Pictures.
The arrangement — which will see Searchlight develop and produce films alongside Good Chaos — comes during a period of success and growth for the London-based company, which last year saw two of its films shortlisted for the international feature Oscar in Baltasar Kormakur’s Icelandic romance drama “Touch” and Sandhya Suri’s India-set crime thriller “Santosh,” representing the U.K.
Coming up, the company heads to Cannes with Shih-Ching Tsou’s “Left Handed Girl” (co-written by recently crowned Oscar monopolizer and Tsou’s frequent collaborator Sean Baker) in the Critics’ Week sidebar. Beyond the festival, it’s adding another Oscar winner to its ranks with “Orphan,” the next film from “Son of Saul” director Laszlo Nemes and now in post.

Brad Pitt is now an A24 star. The actor/producer will lead Oscar-winning “Conclave” director Edward Berger’s latest film “The Riders,” based on Tim Winton’s 1994 novel. “Bones and All” scribe David Kajganich, who’s also writing the Zendaya-led Ronnie Spector biopic “Be My Baby” for A24, will adapt the book. Deadline first reported the project.
“The Riders” follows Fred Scully (Pitt), who, after traveling Europe with his wife, Jennifer, and seven-year-old daughter, Billie, purchases a farmhouse in rural Ireland. Jennifer and Billie then return to Australia to finalize their affairs, only for Billie to return to Ireland alone after traveling across the globe, with Jennifer now missing. Fred is left to make sense of his wife’s disappearance in a story that takes a mystical turn.

A24 will finance and distribute the film. Production is expected to begin in early 2026 and shoot in multiple locations across Europe. That’s the setting of Tim Winton’s novel “The Riders,” which follows a man who moved to Ireland with his family and finds himself searching far and wide after his wife goes missing.
David Kajganich is adapting the screenplay. Producers include Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, Berger’s Nine Hours, Pitt’s Plan B and Kajganich, according to Deadline, which first reported the news of this project.
Pitt will appear next in “F1,” a racing drama from “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski. He’s also working on “The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a spinoff of Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Director Edward Berger had one of the buzziest titles of 2023, with his war drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” going on to triumph spectacularly in the award season including the Oscars. “Conclave” brings him back to the spotlight. The papal thriller premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, gathering raves. It has already kick-started awards consideration for its lead actor Ralph Fiennes. Adapted by Peter Straughan from the 2016 Robert Harris novel, “Conclave” (2024) is a tight, compelling work, focused on slow revelations and illuminating flashes of character.
There is a scattering of twists, with a massive one reserved for the end that reorients the picture in a positive, future-embracing direction. But Berger, wisely, underplays them, buttressing them in a way that shines a light on personal growth and unmasking ambition, agenda, and follies of rash decisions. Fiennes gets to burst intermittently, unleashing frustration but it’s a performance mostly grounded in a subtle,...

With the sad death of Pope Francis announced this Monday, the Oscar-winning film Conclave immediately comes to mind, as its starting point is the same one that we are in right now: when the Pope dies and all cardinals from around the world gather at the Vatican to vote for his successor. People who went looking for the movie today, however, discovered that it's only available to rent, having recently left its original streaming home on Peacock. Fortunately, this changes tomorrow, as Prime Video will include the title in its catalog.
Hopefully, the real-life conclave that will inevitably take place in the coming days is significantly less tense than the one in the Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) movie. In the thriller, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is handling preparations for the election of the next Pope when he is alerted that there might be a conspiracy in place.

Co-directors Alex Garland and former US Navy Seal Ray Mendoza recreate a 2006 battle with almost unbearable intensity – and a dazzling ensemble cast
It’s up there with the first 23 bruising minutes of Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan or Elem Klimov’s harrowing and relentless Come and See. This is film-making that doesn’t just show you the horrors of war; it forces you to taste the dust and the choking panic, smell the fear and the cordite and the tinny metallic tang of spilled blood. Warfare, by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, is the most forceful and unflinching depiction of combat since Edward Berger’s 2023 Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front. It’s also one of the boldest and most formally daring.

Always a valuable resource for behind-the-scenes insight, director David F. Sandberg made a video detailing his approach to practical effects in Until Dawn.
A must-watch for aspiring filmmakers, the video plays like an eight-minute film class on special effects that includes test foots he shot with his wife and producing partner Lotta Losten.
It also teases a few of the movie’s in-camera gore gags, including a worm burrowing into a face, a pickax stab through the chest, a head repeatedly smashed on the ground, and a leg amputation.
Applied Arts FX Studio handled the practical effects in the film, with visual effects by Upp.

The movie "Warfare," as co-directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, is one of the most directly visceral war films ever made. The filmmakers' camera hangs, like a fascinated extraterrestrial, on tiny details, observing them as if they were recording biological field notes. Viewers can practically feel the textures of the soldiers' guns, the weight of their enormous uniforms, and the temperature of the rooms they're in. When the IEDs begin exploding, the audio begins to fade in and out, the film's boom mics seemingly existing within the ears of whatever soldier we're looking at during that moment. There's a lot of screaming and bleeding and panic.
"Warfare" takes place in Iraq in 2006, detailing a very specific battle during George W. Bush's broad and chaotic War on Terror. Garland and Mendoza constructed their film entirely from the memories of the soldiers involved, and built the film's sets based on...

"Have you seen the new show?" goes the classic Tumblr post. "It's on Tubu. It's literally on Heebee. It's on Poodee with ads. It's literally on Dippy. You can probably find it on Weeno. Dude it's on Gumpy. It's a Pheebo original. It's on Poob. You can watch it on Poob." The meme goes on like that for a while, and it's one of the seminal texts of our age, expertly satirizing the seemingly-infinite number of streaming services that feel like they're overwhelming us with choices. At the same time, a lot of them seem oddly empty, offering buzz-less originals no one's ever heard of and paltry historical libraries filled with movies you probably have no interest in watching.
Yes, these days, keeping up with pop culture requires subscribing to an astonishing number of services with increasingly-nonsensical names. Is it worth signing up just to watch the one show everyone's talking about this week?...

Viewers who watch Netflix on connected TV devices can now select from additional subtitle and dubbing options.
One of the most underrated features of on-demand streaming is the increased accessibility that viewers can enjoy as opposed to linear TV. Streamers often feature a huge range of language options when it comes to subtitles and even audio overdubs, and Netflix is definitely one of the best in this regard. With nearly one-third of all Netflix viewing being registered for non-English titles, the streaming giant has just unlocked more language options for subscribers looking for both subtitles and dubbing.

Cph:dox has crowned winners at the latest edition of the renowned nonfiction film festival in Copenhagen.
The Dox:Award, the festival’s top prize, went to Always, the directorial debut of Deming Chen. The film tells the story of a young poet, 8-year-old Youbin, who lives “deep in the lush mountains of Hunan province” in southern China.
“There’s a huge difference between nothing and small things. But life is in fact made up of many, often unnoticed, small things. We need the sensibilities of artists to show us the greatness of the little things,” noted the Dox:Award jury comprised of Rikke Tambo Andersen, Max Kestner, Nicolas Rapold, Adele Tulli and Raul Niño Zambrano. “This exquisitely shot chronicle of a rural farming family is alive with compassion and poetry.”

On Friday, the top Dox award at Copenhagen documentary festival Cph:dox went to “Always,” the first feature by Chinese director Deming Chen. The film follows eight-year-old Youbin, raised by his father and grandparents in a remote mountain village in Hunan province, who discovers poetry as a means of making sense of his solitude and the world around him.
Shot in stunning black and white, the film blends lyrical beauty with raw realism, following Youbin’s coming-of-age as he grapples with life, loss, and the passage of time.
Taking to the stage, a very emotional Chen thanked his entire team. Producer Hansen Lin said: “Through the journey of making this film, we hope to share this happiness and achievement with everyone who still believes in their dreams. With only one year under her belt as Studiocanal’s executive managing director of TV series, M-k Kennedy, who joined from Netflix, is leveling up the scripted ambitions of the French pay TV group’s production arm.
After spearheading Studiocanal’s first in-house international series, “Paris Has Fallen” — which broke rating records on Canal+ and topped the charts on Amazon U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — Kennedy reveals to Variety that the highly anticipated second season of the anthology, “Apollo Has Fallen,” has started filming. Rather than taking place in a single location, the eight-part series will hop from country to country, unfolding everywhere from the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, with principal photography taking place across the U.K., Marta and Spain. The series is produced by Studiocanal, Urban Myth Films, Millenium and G-Base, who were also behind “Paris Has Fallen,” which sold to more than 170 territories worldwide.

The question of whether it's actually possible to make a true anti-war film has, without hyperbole, hovered over the entire history of film, without ever quite being answered to satisfaction. What makes it a tricky imbroglio is that the very idea of anti-war filmmaking presupposes that a film will be going against one of the core tenets of commercial cinema: The mission to thrill, entertain, and satisfy viewers. To be truly anti-war, a movie can't stop at just paying lip service to the idea that war is a bad thing whose professed heroics are an illusion; it has to actually live that idea, inhabit it in its very emotional charge, making an active effort to not glorify combat or naturalize war's dehumanizing emotional logic by wringing catharsis from its trials and triumphs. And, by nature, any such movie will be some degree of unsatisfying, if not outright hostile to the viewer.

At the end of 2023, it was reported that a new Bourne movie was in the works from All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave director Edward Berger.
The news was welcomed by fans who had assumed Matt Damon's time as the ex-CIA agent and Treadstone operative had reached its end, though the filmmaker dialled back expectations last October when he confirmed, "I'm not doing it right now." Damon has also danced around the subject of returning.
The decision has likely been taken out of their hands, though, as Universal Pictures has lost the rights to the Bourne franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com), WME is currently shopping the rights to both that spy franchise and the rest of author Robert Ludlum's library at the behest of the late author's estate.

The Jason Bourne franchise is getting a major shakeup. After a planned sixth film in the movie series failed to materialize, the franchise is hitting the shopping block, set to leave its longtime home at Universal Studios.
Per Deadline, the Bourne franchise will be up for sale, which will be overseen by WME on behalf of the estate of author Robert Ludlum, who published the first book in the original series, The Bourne Identity, in 1980. Captivate Entertainment will manage the rights for the estate. Skydance, Apple, and Netflix are all said to be interested as potential buyers. At this point, it's too early to know if the franchise will be completely rebooted once it finds its new home, or if Matt Damon will end up returning as Jason Bourne.

German-born filmmaker Edward Berger told UK exhibitors his Bafta-winning papal thrillerConclavemay have been lost had it landed on a streaming platform. Instead, the film has grossed$110m to date at the worldwide box office.
“It might have very well disappeared on Netflix,” said Berger at the UK Cinema Association’s annual conference in London on March 18.
“People are talking, nothing big happens in the first five minutes, you need patience, you need to lock people in the cinema to watch it.
“We need to put people in the movie theatre to give them the opportunity to engage, people are much more impatient by nature.

Ted Sarandos, the head of Netflix, wonders if the threatened cinema industry might harbour some kind of bias against his company. Hmmm.
Netflix loves statistics. The company thrives on numbers, using its endless reams of data to commission projects, axe projects, determine payouts and see into the future. Okay, maybe not the last one.
But for a company so adept at reading the digital tea leaves that it has rocketed from humble beginnings as a mail-out DVD service to become bigger than any of its famous old rivals, CEO Ted Sandaros seems to be having a little trouble deciphering a rather simple data set.
Netflix has picked up more awards recognition at the Oscars each year for the last three years, and yet still, that top prize of Best Picture eludes the company. Even in the years when it seemed like a shoo-in, such as when Roma or The Power Of The Dog...

With over 300 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix is the biggest name in the world of streaming, but the company is still chasing Hollywood’s top honour: the Oscar for Best Picture. Although Netflix hasn’t won Best Picture, it’s come close several times; in fact, the studio received the most Oscar nominations out of any studio at the recent Academy Awards ceremony.
While speaking with Variety, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos was asked if he’s disappointed that Netflix has yet to win an Oscar for Best Picture. “It’s hard for me to say, ‘Do they have it out for Netflix?’ when we’ve been the most-nominated studio for the past three years,” Sarandos said. “There’s something about [the Academy] — you nominate the movies that you respect and admire, and you vote for best picture for the movie that you love. We have to make a movie that people love.“

Exclusive: Screenwriter J S Mayank has been tapped by producers Kate Cohen, Alexander Vesely and Tony Robbins to join Oscar nominee and Bafta winner Lesley Paterson (All Quiet on the Western Front) in writing the feature adaptation of Viktor Frankl‘s classic treatise, Man’s Search for Meaning.
Paterson had been writing the script with her husband and writing partner Simon Marshall, as was reported in Deadline a year ago. At the time, Marshall had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Marshall died last June.
After taking some time to regroup and grieve, the filmmaking team undertook a search for someone to team up with Paterson.
“Finding a writing partner who could understand and support me on this journey while at the same time servicing this masterpiece felt like an impossible ask,” says Paterson. “J S has stepped into this role seamlessly and I’m so honored and relieved to have teamed up with him.

When German novelist Erich Maria Remarque wrote All Quiet on the Western Front in 1929, it was as if the world had been waiting for someone to finally tell war’s ugly truth. At the time, war stories were either glorified or avoided altogether, with many believing audiences wouldn’t stomach such a raw, unfiltered look at the battlefield. Remarque's novel defied this expectation, becoming one of the most powerful portrayals of disillusionment in war literature. The novel tells the story of Paul, a teenage soldier who enrolls with his schoolmates after being indoctrinated with war heroic ideology. However, his patriotic dreams are shattered by the grim realities of the frontlines.

Pierce Brosnan Says Bond Producer Barbara Broccoli Had ‘Great Courage’ to Sell to Amazon MGM Studios

Pierce Brosnan has weighed in on why he thinks the James Bond sale to Amazon MGM Studios was the “right decision.” Brosnan led the franchise as 007 from 1995 to 2002, beginning with “GoldenEye.” In 2025, longtime Bond producers and half-siblings Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced that Amazon MGM Studios would have complete creative control of the IP. The deal was a reported $1 billion; both Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the franchise.
Brosnan recently told The Telegraph that the deal was “the right decision for Barbara and Michael” and was also an act of “courage” for the duo. “It takes great courage for them to let go,” Brosnan said. “They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.”
He added, “History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the...

Alfonso Cuarón is reportedly in the running to helm James Bond 26. Joining directors Greta Gerwig, Chad Stahelski, Chloé Zhao, and Sam Mendes, Cuarón is but one of the dark horses climbing up the ranks.
Jeff Sneider has revived rumors that Alfonso Cuarón is directing a James Bond installment. Producer David Heyman is also tagged to produce the film, per the InSneider. This could be Cuarón and Heyman's next collaboration after Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was one of the best films in that franchise. Jeff Bezos Wanted to Remove Barbara Broccoli After She Called Amazon Execs ‘F**king Idiots’ — Report

Jeff Bezos wasted no time in buying out longtime James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli after an alleged slight.
In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon CEO Bezos was determined to take all creative control for the IP through Amazon MGM Studios — which was announced in February 2025 for a reported cost of $1 billion. Fueling that price tag? Sheer retaliation.
In December 2024, The Wall Street Journal published a piece in which Broccoli is quoted as telling her personal friends that Amazon executives were “fucking idiots” amid dealings with the Bond franchise.
As THR now stated, Bezos “read her quote in the Journal and got on the phone and said, ‘I don’t care what it costs, get rid of her,'” according to an unnamed insider. The outlet further included how Broccoli bristled when Amazon content chief Jennifer Salke referred to Bond films as “content,” and Broccoli’s half-brother Michael G. Wilson...

With the James Bond franchise now under the control of Amazon, a few directors are no longer as excited about the prospect of helming a 007 movie. If so, who would you cast as your version of Bond?”
Perkins immediately shot down the question by answering: “No, because fuck Jeff Bezos.”

People like to say, “It’s never too early” to do something, but that’s not always true. For example, it’s too early to predict next year’s Academy Awards before this year’s Academy Awards. But the 2025 Oscars are over, so now it’s time to start making predictions about what films will contend for the Oscars next year.
It’s already looking like the 98th Academy Awards will have a stronger field than the 97th. Blue chip filmmakers are returning from long breaks with exciting casts in tow. Each Safdie brother has their own A24 sports drama. There’s a new Avatar movie. It’s going to be an exciting, unpredictable year.

Walter Salles’ deeply moving drama “I’m Still Here” has won the Academy Award for best international feature, marking a historic first for Brazil.
The film, which tells the real-life story of Eunice Paiva’s decades-long search for justice after her husband’s disappearance during Brazil’s military dictatorship, has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Its surprise nomination for best picture — alongside expected nods for international feature and best actress for star Fernanda Torres — solidified its status as a major contender.
The film beat out France’s “Emilia Perez,” Germany’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Denmark’s “The Girl With the Needle” and Latvia’s “Flow.”
“I’m so honored to receive this, and in such an extraordinary group of filmmakers,” Salles said during his acceptance speech. “This goes to a woman who, after a loss suffered during an authoritarian regime, decided not to bend. And to resist.

Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

‘Peacock’ Is a Cinematic Social Media Age Metaphor That Dissects Self-Presentation With Subtle Humor

Austrian writer-director Bernhard Wenger‘s feature directing debut Peacock dissects the themes of identity and self-presentation in the age of social media but it doesn’t hit you over the head with a hammer. Actually, it doesn’t even mention social media much at all.
Peacock, an Austrian-German co-production that world premiered at the Venice Critics’ Week last year and gets its U.K. debut at the Glasgow Film Festival on Oscar Sunday, with another screening on Monday, features German rising star Albrecht Schuch (Edward Berger‘s All Quiet on the Western Front, Andreas Kleinert’s Dear Thomas, Nora Fingscheidt’s System Crasher) as Matthias, along with the likes of Anton Noori, and Julia Franz Richter.
“Matthias is a master of performance, slipping seamlessly into any role demanded by his rent-a-companion company’s clients – from art-loving boyfriend to Good Samaritan and dutiful son,” notes a synopsis. “His people-pleasing attitude has...

Here at Gold Derby, we traffic in data. We use numbers, odds, and statistics to predict awards. But when it comes to the Oscars, some statistics matter more.
Famously, the rates of milk consumption and divorce in Colorado have been shown to correlate closely in the past few years. But how much are they influencing each other? Probably not a whole lot.
So, when it comes to the Oscars, which stats are worth paying attention to? We will look at some common data points referenced by prognosticators and tell you which to consider when making your final Oscar picks.
To win Best Picture, you need a Best Director nomination
For a long time, a Best Director nomination was touted as a “must-have” for a film vying to win Best Picture. In the past few years, Best Picture contenders Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Trial of the Chicago 7 did not receive Best Director nominations,...

Fans are excited to see the Oscars ceremony unfold this year. After seeing Jimmy Kimmel for the last two years at the center stage, fans look forward to seeing a new host. Conan O’Brien will be hosting the 97th Academy Awards on March 2nd at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Besides its ABC broadcast, this year’s event will stream on Hulu, a first in the history of the Oscars.
From actors to performers to comedy greats, the Oscars have seen several celebrities take over the hosting duties over the years. The first-ever Academy Awards took place as a private dinner, without a formal host. Douglas Fairbanks, Academy President at the time, hosted the dinner alongside Vice-President William C. deMille.

“If there was only certainty, and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore, no need for faith. Let us pray that God will grant us a Pope who doubts,” Cardinal Lawrence cautions his fellow cardinals in Conclave in a poignant speech at the start of the papal summit to select the next leader of the Catholic Church.
The Machiavellian machinations escalate as over 100 cardinals from around the world gather after the expected death of the current Pontiff to participate in a brutal battle of succession, pitting the liberal camp of the order—led by Cardinal Bellini—against the conservatives with Cardinal Tedesco of Venice (Sergio Castellitto). A fast-paced tale of duty, power, faith, and comeuppance, director Edward Berger’s riveting election thriller was recently anointed the Best Film of the year by BAFTA and nominated for eight Academy Awards.
