Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.
Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.
In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

Christophe Honoré has landed quite the cast for his next feature film. Re-teaming with daughter-mother team of Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, Honoré also adds Benjamin Biolay, Melvil Poupaud, Nicole Garcia and Fabrice Luchini to the mix. Les inrocks folks confirm (what we had mentioned last week), filming does take place in late August in Paris and it’ll then move to Rome (Marcello Mastroianni’s home turf). We can chalk what will likely be a meta exercise as a Cannes competition hopeful. Les Films Pelléas’ Philippe Martin and David Thion are producing the currently untitled feature.
Honoré will likely take an intimate approach into Chiara Mastroianni’s world tackling identity and possibly the splitting of two personas — he is in a good position to do so as he has worked with the actress on six prior occasions – their last collaboration being the Un Certain Regard Best Actress awarded for...

Sebastian Lelio’s “Wonder,” starring “Black Widow’s” Florence Pugh, “Winter Boy” with Juliette Binoche and directors Hong Sang-soo and Ulrich Seidl will compete in main competition at September’s San Sebastian Film Festival, the biggest film event in the Spanish-speaking world.
In “Wonder,” the latest from Academy Award winning director Lelio (“A Fantastic Woman”),Pugh plays an English nurse brought in to the Irish Midlands in 1862 to observe the alleged miracle of girls going months without food.
Binoche co-stars in “Winter Boy,” from resilient French auteur Christophe Honoré who won at Cannes Un Certain Regard with 2019’s “On a Magical Night.” Hong Sang-soo, the prolific South Korean director, will present “Walk Up,” a film which is billed as taking a gently delightful new perspective on themes dear to his poetics.
Seidl’s “Sparta” forms part of a diptych with 2022 Berlin competition contender “Rimini,” both movies turning on men who cannot escape their past.

Strand Releasing has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Franco-Lebanese auteur Danielle Arbid’s “Simple Passion,” a Cannes 2020 title that played strong on the fall festival circuit.
Announced as part of the Cannes 2020 selection, the French-language film premiered in San Sebastian, and would go on to play Busan, Moscow and Zurich ahead of a planned release in France later this year.

“Charlatan” competed at the Berlin Film Festival this year in the Special Gala section, and was most recently selected at Telluride. “Charlatan” represents Czech Republic in the Oscar race for the best international feature film.
“Charlatan” is based on the true story of Czech healer Jan Mikolášek, who dedicated his life to treating the sick using medicinal plants. Holland has described “Charlatan” as a story about Mikolášek’s “moral fall and of his constant fight with the darkness inside him.”
“It is the story of the mystery of a man, of the mystery of his special gift, of the prize he was ready to pay for it; the story of the paradox of strength and weakness, of love and hate,” said Holland.

The pandemic, although disastrous for most parts of the economy, had one minor upside: a boost in online viewing. The number of subscribers of Portugal’s VOD platform Filmin, for example, has tripled compared with last year, due in part to the lockdown. “We grew as much in three months as we forecast for two years,” Filmin Portugal manager Anette Dujisin told Variety. Classic films have played a major part in driving that growth.
Despite challenges with local classics, Filmin is seeing growing success with heritage films and catalog titles as well as new releases. Filmin has received constant requests from subscribers – even loud demands from some – for more classic films since the service went online in 2016, Dujisin said.
The feedback affirms “that a VOD platform dedicated to independent cinema is not complete without a certain body of classical films,” Dujisin said. “So since the beginning we have been making...

Following his star turn in “Jauja,” a major hit at the 2014 Cannes Festival, Viggo Mortensen will re-team with Argentine director Lisandro Alonso on “Eureka,” one of the boldest upcoming art films from Latin America.
Mortensen, who takes the lead role in “Eureka’s” first part, will be joined by France’s Chiara Mastroianni, a Cesar Award best actress nominee this year for “On a Magical Night,” and Portugal’s Maria de Medeiros (“Pulp Fiction”).
In a nod towards “Jauja,” Mortensen once more takes the role of a father, here Murphy, searching for a daughter, again played by Denmark’s Viilbjørk Malling Agger, who has been kidnapped in “Eureka” by an outlaw, Randall. Despite the actors reprising similar roles, the film is not a sequel.
In addition, the setting for Part 1 of “Eureka,” entitled “Western,” is no longer Argentina’s Patagonia but a lawless township in 1870 on the U.S.-Mexico border,...

Once upon a time, “Tenet” was set to open today, July 17. When Warners dated the film, rivals got out of the way. At this writing, it’s scheduled for August 12 worldwide, and it’s just one of many major releases to see (sometimes multiple) delays — or, rerouting to VOD release. Trying to track, or even remember, all the films that shifted would challenge even the most obsessed film fan.
With that in mind, we’ve recreated the original release calendar for March 20 through July 17 as it stood on March 3 — the day before Bond film “No Time to Die” shifted from April to November, auguring a massive number of changes to come.

A good French farce can be truly something special. The way those films are able to mix comedy, romance, and more is quite something. On a Magical Night (formerly known as Chambre 212) seeks to somewhat follow in those footsteps, presenting a comic fantasy that mixes whimsy and even some sexiness. Unfortunately, the mixture is a little off, the material is a little too packed into a short running time, and the satisfaction level is lower than desired. This is not to say that the flick is bad, since that couldn’t be further from the truth. It simply hints at a much better effort than what we ultimately have on hand. The movie is a comedy, with some fantastical elements to it. At its core, it’s about how we all wonder about the roads not taken, specifically when it comes to our romantic interests. Specifically, it’s through...

"What if you gave back what you took?" Strand Releasing has debuted an official Us trailer for a film titled On a Magical Night, a French comedy formerly known as Chambre 212 (aka Room 212) when it initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year. This is the latest from sultry French filmmaker Christophe Honoré and deals with a woman who leaves her husband and moves into a hotel opposite of her home. There she wonders if she made the right decision, re-examining her entire life with him. Award-winning French actress Chiara Mastroianni stars, with Benjamin Biolay, Vincent Lacoste, Camille Cottin, and Carole Bouquet. Nothing like a French comedy about infidelity and marriage, right? This one looks whimsical and amusing. Here's the official Us trailer (+ posters) for Christophe Honoré's On a Magical Night, from YouTube: After 20 years of marriage, Maria (Chiara Mastroianni) decides to leave. She moves to...

A zesty palate cleanser of sorts after his wrenching “Sorry Angel” — but in some ways a much weightier film than writer-director Christophe Honoré has left himself the strength to carry — “On a Magical Night” is a fanciful tale of marriage and its malcontents;
Honoré says he was desperate to film Chiara Mastroianni’s “anxious forehead and ironic dimples,” so he cast the French actress as Maria, a historian in her late 40s who’s having a clandestine (but rather unapologetic) affair with a twentysomething student whose name sounds like an anagram for sexual misadventure: Asdrubal Electorat. Maria finds that kinda funny; her devout and tender husband Richard (Benjamin Biolay) does not. He boots her from their Paris apartment shortly after the truth comes out, forcing Maria to spend the night in the hotel across the street. But she won’t be spending the night alone — not when there’s a blithe spirit in the air,...

A Room with a Screw: Honoré Waxes Playful on Marital Discord
The flexibility (or lack thereof) of fidelity in heteronormative relationships is at the center of Chambre 212, the latest from Christophe Honoré. While the English language title On a Magical Night turns out to be a rather trite approximation of the film’s playful attitude on strenuous universalities regarding monogamy, there’s palpable levity afforded an otherwise stagnant scenario, even as Honoré reverses the gender perspectives we’ve become accustomed to. Playful and buoyant, there’s a wonderful effervescence courtesy of a standout lead from Chiara Mastroianni, a regular muse of the director, making her first reappearance since 2011’s Beloved.…...

If the last month has proven anything when it comes to the world of film, we can only expect the unexpected when it comes to shifting release dates, roll-outs, and platforms. This means it is a bit futile to publish our yearly summer preview when the release calendar seems to change day-by-day, however, we’ll still be delivering our monthly previews.
The month of May doesn’t look like the usual one as there are no summer blockbusters on the slate, but there are plenty of notable options to watch, from controversial festival favorites to powerful documentaries. As a special mention, before its official release later this year via Music Box Films, Mubi will be holding a one-day-only, free special preview of Pablo Larraín’s Ema this Friday, May 1, and one can see our review here.
See our picks to watch this May below.

Yesterday, the César Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, were handed out. Taking the top prize, in somewhat of a surprise, was Les Misérables from Ladj Ly. Clearly a top contender for the award, it faced stiff competition from An Officer and a Spy, as well as especially from Portrait of a Lady on Fire. However, France’s submission to the Academy Awards had that upper hand, and in the end, it led the way here. Of course, what was most noteworthy was actress and nominee Adèle Haenel (from Portrait of a Lady on Fire) walked out of the ceremony when it was announced that Roman Polanski had won the Best Director prize for An Officer and a Spy. Her protest made waves throughout the industry, and even thought Polanski was not in attendance, it was a powerful statement, to be sure… Here now are the Cesar Award results: Best Film “La Belle Epoque,...

Charades will unveil the promos of both films, as well as “Madeleine Collins,” Antoine Barraud’s psychological drama headlined by Virginie Efira, and will be hosting the market premieres of Sebastien Demoustier’s “The Girl With a Bracelet” which is generating strong box office returns in France, where it opened last week, and Bruno Merle’s “Felicita.”
A psychological drama, starring Chiara Mastroianni and Roschdy Zem, “The Girl With a Bracelet,” has already attracted 100,000 admissions in five days. The film follows a 16-year-old who stands trial for the murder of her best friend and begins to confess to a secret life that she kept from her parents.

The film directed by Ladj Ly, which won the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, will kick off a week of new and classic French-language films for La audiences.
The event will offer a splashy La bow for Amazon’s Oscar hopeful in a city packed with Academy voters. France has yet to submit a film for the 2020 Best International Film Oscar, but “Les Misérables” is among the top contenders. Inspired by the riots of 2005 in the suburbs of Paris, Ly’s film revolves around three members of an anti-crime brigade who are overrun while trying to make an arrest.

On Saturday, the Cannes Film Festival revealed who and what their honorees were for the 2019 incarnation of the fest. The race for the Palme d’Or had been considered one of the most competitive in recent years, as most of the major contenders met or exceeded expectations. The tip had been that the prize would go to either Pain and Glory from Pedro Almodovar or Parasite from Bong Joon-ho, with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood potentially a spoiler. Well, the results are in, courtesy of the jury led by Alejandro González Iñárritu and comprised of Enki Bilal, Robin Campillo, Maimouna N’Diaye, Elle Fanning, Yorgos Lanthimos, Paweł Pawlikowski, Kelly Reichardt, and Alice Rohrwacher. Who and what did they pick? Time to find out. The top prize went to Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, one of the festival’s presumed frontrunners for the award. As for other notable results,...

In a unanimous decision by the Cannes 2019 jury headed up by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Bong Joon-ho was awarded the Palme d’Or for his new thriller Parasite, marking the first South Korean director ever to do so. “With the terrific Parasite, Bong has crafted an angry, genre-inflected social allegory that in many ways functions as a Korean analog to Jordan Peele’s Us. A far superior craftsman than Peele, Bong is perhaps the contemporary master of entertaining, intelligent and resolutely political cinema. In our age of assembly line blockbusters, he’s a veritable treasure,” Giovanni Marchini Camia said in our review of the film, which will be released in the U.S. by Neon.

Most of us, in our romantic lives, meditate here and there on the other roads we might have traveled, and movies are uniquely equipped to channel those alternate-universe-of-love possibilities. That’s the idea at the (broken) heart of “Casablanca.” And the fantasy of getting to see the turns your life didn’t take play out right in front of you underlies such disparate movies as “Sliding Doors,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and “La La Land.” “On a Magical Night,” the new film from the writer-director Christophe Honoré, treats that fantasy in a way that’s original but oddly familiar, turning it into a gentle surrealist bedroom farce. But at first we think we’re watching a movie that could have been called “Memoirs of a Cougar.”

The 2019 Cannes Film Festival has announced the winners in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. The section’s jury was headed by “Capernaum” director Nadine Labaki. Fellow jury members included Marina Foïs, Nurhan Sekerci-Porst, Lisandro Alonso, and Lukas Dhont.
“We would like to express the great pleasure we had diving into the diversity of this selection,” the jury wrote in a statement accompanying the list of 2019 winners. “This on many levels: on the subjects, on the way cinematic tools were used and on the portayal of its characters. It was very stimulating to have seen, side by side, filmmakers that master their langage so well and others still finding their way to mastery.”
The Un Certain Regard top prize went to Karim Ainouz’s “The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao.” Other winners included Bruno Dumont’s “Joan of Arc,” Albert Serra’s “Liberte,” and Michael Angelo Covino’s “The Climb,” which...
