Why Hasn't Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Premiered Yet?
Image
Fans of the Law & Order universe have had a somewhat different Thursday night than they've been accustomed to. While sister series Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit have already commenced their new seasons, one remains conspicuously absent from the lineup: Law & Order: Organized Crime is nowhere to be found. Despite confirmation of its renewal, the series has faced a series of challenges that have delayed its return, leaving a wake of suspense and frustration. Instagram comments on the show trios' official account often include some questions about when Organized Crime, as well as blatant statements that many feel Organized Crime is the best of the shows, point blank, so its omission feels extra jarring.

But it's not all down to an anti-Organized Crime agenda. Several factors have come together in a snowball effect to bring about the postponement of Season 5 -- including significant behind-the-scenes changes and strategic shifts in distribution.

Seven Of Nine’s Borg “Children” On Star Trek: Voyager Explained
Image
Former Borg drone Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) was a mother figure and mentor to a group of ex-Borg children in Star Trek: Voyager. Voyager's Borg kids had been assimilated as children, just like Seven, who was only six years old when her parents' ship, the USS Raven, was caught after years of evading capture. Young Annika Hansen was the daughter of Erin and Mangus Hansen, Federation scientists whose study of the Borg brought them to the Delta Quadrant. Annika was too young to become a drone, so she was placed in a maturation chamber until she was older.

Recently liberated from the Borg Collective, Seven was still figuring out how to reclaim her own humanity when the USS Voyager encountered a Borg Cube that had been struck by a virus in Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 16, "Collective". The virus rendered the Cube all but inert, killing all the drones...

Legendary Entertainment Ends Venture With Watford & Essex As UK Producer Files For Closure
Image
Exclusive: In another reminder of the challenging climate for UK scripted producers, Watford & Essex has filed for closure after its joint-venture deal with Legendary Entertainment was not renewed.

The drama company was founded alongside Legendary in 2020 by Emma Frost and Matthew Graham, showrunners of Starz series The Spanish Princess, but did not have a greenlit series announced during its five years of trading.

Legendary ended its joint-venture agreement with Watford & Essex last year and the producer has in recent days appointed financial services firm Cork Gully to oversee a liquidation process.

Legendary, the U.S. studio behind series including Dune: Prophecy, declined to comment. Reps for Frost and Graham have been contacted for comment.

When Watford & Essex announced its arrival in 2020, the producer said it was in development on 10 projects, including a remake of ABC’s 1960s TV series Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

Watford & Essex also...

Why Carlos Maldonado Left Law & Order: Organized Crime
Image
Detective Carlos Maldonado, portrayed by Mike Cannon, joined Law & Order: Organized Crime in its second season, quickly becoming an integral member of the Organized Crime Control Bureau Task Force. As a character with a strong moral compass and an ability to navigate high-stakes investigations, Maldonado resonated with fans. However, his departure from the series at the end of Season 2 left viewers with questions about the character's exit and its impact on the show.

Of course, Dick Wolf's franchise is known for multiple characters leaving their respective shows Unlike some of the more dramatic character exits in the Law & Order franchise, Maldonado’s transfer out of the Task Force was a quieter but poignant moment. Of course, it still left plenty of open story doors in its wake.

Carlos Maldonado’s Role in the Organized Crime Task Force

Following the loss of Season 1 characters Freddie Washburn and Diego Morales, the...

Richard Rankin's New Rebus TV Series Does Ian Rankin Justice
Image
The following contains minor spoilers for Rebus, now streaming on Viaplay.

The third adaptation of Rebus might not be its absolute best -- but it's not far off. Sir Ian Rankin's beloved Inspector Rebus novels are on TV screens again, this time with Richard Rankin in the title role. It's just good sense to ask why, because audiences have already done this before with mixed results, twice if one counts that the role of Rebus has been played by two previous actors. But the Rebus of 2024 is a far cry from the Rebus inhabited by John Hannah and Ken Stott, and that makes all the difference.

Fans of British television will gravitate toward Rebus, which was produced for Nordic streaming service Viaplay and originally screened on BBC One in the summer, because the six-episode drama has the sensibilities of the great British crime dramas. And given that John Rebus...

Retro Review: Life on Mars Season 1 Has Lost None of Its Power to Enthrall
Image
It's a day like any other for Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler (John Simm), the Manchester policeman at the center of BBC One's Life on Mars (available through a BritBox subscription). Everything is normal until strange circumstances send Sam hurtling into the past. The logline concept sounds great on paper, but it's even better in execution. With far more than just a shoddy framework built around a gimmick, Life on Mars is a hefty series that's never bogged down by awkward exposition. As Sam tries to figure out what happened to him, his journey takes him through intriguing cases, pits him against his peers, and, yes, ultimately answers its most pertinent questions.

Life on Mars aired for two seasons from 2006 to 2007 before spawning an equally brilliant sequel series, Ashes to Ashes (2008-2010). Whereas many other shows premised on similar sci-fi twists tend to lose the thread (and audience interest...

Line of Duty Series 3 Review: A Break from the Show's Formula
Image
Line of Duty Series 3 is the most interesting entry in the BBC show's catalogue, because it's the most experimental. After figuring out how to craft a hit TV series, and then nearly blowing it all up, creator and writer Jed Mercurio has to figure out what's going to keep AC-12 interesting. Because when someone always swings for the fences, audiences tend to start expecting home runs every time out. And while Series 3 might not be a home run in every fan's book, it's perhaps the most underrated season.

The season focuses on Sergeant Danny Waldron (played by Daniel Mays from the first season of Good Omens), the leader of an armed response squad. But while Danny and his team do come under investigation by AC-12, the story doesn't stop there. A surprising early-season twist shakes up the plot and turns Series 3 into a tragic tale of institutional failure, rather than just one bad apple.

10 Iconic Quotes from British Crime Shows, Ranked
Image
British crime shows have continued to provide entertainment for audiences with both comedy and drama, although the latter has a wider range. With so many to now choose from, the task of any writer is to invent something fresh that will make their show leap out from the rest of the genre. There's some that fall short of being imaginative, but plenty of others catch the eye of many a viewer.

Among the best crime shows are enthralling characters. However, the characters rely on great scripts to make them worthy of seeing a whole series through. The most iconic quotes are born out of either quick wit, intensity or even subtle moments that are unexpected. Many fans will recognize some of the following quotes, while others may be intrigued by the context.

Line of Duty Series 2 Review: The Show Flirts With Self-Destruction
Image
Sophomore albums are notoriously hard to record -- and the same is true for TV shows. Second seasons often fall short of first-season hype, or push themselves so hard to be bigger and better that they go off the deep end. Line of Duty Series 2 has an incredibly high bar to clear and is able to leap over it, while also taking some significant creative risks that separate it from its predecessor.

Series 2 is one of the most important seasons in Line of Duty history, because of the arrival of Keeley Hawes as Lindsay Denton. Denton becomes a key -- and polarizing -- figure within the show's universe. But with the world established and Steve Arnott now integrated into AC-12, creator and writer Jed Mercurio is free to expand his canvas in ways both necessary and surprising.

This Canceled British Sci-Fi Drama Is Still Worth Revisiting
Image
Life on Mars is a unique blend of genres with a realistic and immersive approach. Audiences follow Sam's confusion while the show explores great crimes and adds a supernatural touch. Ashes to Ashes successfully tied up loose ends, linking the narratives of the two shows seamlessly.

Rehashing the same plots in one particular genre can become tiresome and predictable. So when the drama series Life on Mars came along, viewers were treated to a refreshingly seamless blend of time travel, police procedural and mystery. The show first aired in 2006 and ran for two seasons before being given the sequel, Ashes to Ashes. In 2008, an American adaptation of the same name was brought to fruition, although it was canceled before a second season was commissioned. Life on Mars transports viewers back to 1973, which, although at the time of release was only 33 years in the past, was a completely different era for policing.

The Correct Order To Watch The Pumpkinhead Horror Franchise
Image
Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.

Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

The Best 2000s British Sci-Fi TV Series (Aside from Doctor Who)
Image
The 21st century is when everything changes.

British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.

And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.

Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

Life on Mars: UK Creators Announce Lazarus Sequel Series Not Happening
Life on Mars will not have another sequel series after all. The creators of the UK series have announced that the planned spin-off, titled Lazarus, will not be happening, per Deadline.

The original Life on Mars series aired for two seasons on BBC One between 2006 and 2007. Starring John Simm, Philip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews, and Marshall Lancaster, the sci-fi series follows a cop (Simm) from 2006 who finds himself thrown back in time to 1970s Manchester.

The Life on Mars Revival Has Been Cancelled, And We’re Gutted
Image
There’s an elite tier of TV dramas that stay with you, vividly, for decades after they air, and seventies-set sci-fi crime drama Life on Mars was the perfect example. So fervent was the show’s fanbase, that even 15 years after it aired – introducing us to detective Sam Tyler (Grace’s John Simm), who has a car crash in 2006 and wakes up mysteriously trapped in 1973 – the news of a planned revival during a lockdown live tweet-along in 2020 was enthusiastically received.

This revival was later fittingly dubbed Lazarus – once again named after a David Bowie song, like Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes – but we’ve now received the sad confirmation from the show’s creators that the reboot won’t be going ahead after all:

It is with a heavy heart that the creators of #LifeOnMars have confirmed that the highly anticipated revival show, #Lazarus, will no longer be moving forward.

Life On Mars Sequel Series Lazarus Officially Dead According To Creators
Image
The planned Life on Mars sequel series Lazarus is dead in the water. Life on Mars, which aired on the BBC in 2006, followed a man who is sent back to 1973 after a mysterious accident and received a 2008 sequel series titled Ashes to Ashes. In 2020 it was announced that a third sequel titled Lazarus was in production with original stars John Simm and Philip Glenister returning as Detective Inspector Sam Tyler and Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt.

This weekend, the Life on Mars Twitter account posted an unfortunate update on the status of the Lazarus sequel series.

It is with a heavy heart that the creators of #LifeOnMars have confirmed that the highly anticipated revival show, #Lazarus, will no longer be moving forward. Many thanks to Matthew Graham & Ashley Pharoah for these past 3 years in your efforts to reunite Sam Tyler & Gene Hunt...

However, the show’s creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah have announced this will no longer be happening. The team took to social media on Saturday to report to fans:

Steeltown Murders Cast: Who Plays the Real Life Characters in This True Crime Drama?
Image
In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.

In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.

Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Seven Of Nine’s Picard Cliffhanger Is A New Star Trek Captain Problem
Image
The tongue-in-cheek cliffhanger ending for Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in the Star Trek: Picard season 3 finale hints at a wider issue for new Star Trek captains. Seven's Picard season 3 story ends with her in command of the USS Enterprise-g, alongside her Number One, Commander Raffaela Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Special Counselor to the Captain, Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). As the Enterprise prepares to leave space dock, Seven is asked whether she has a catchphrase in mind, a callback to Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his iconic orders to "Engage" and "Make it so".

In the 21st century era of the franchise, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have both made a big deal of the captain of each show's hero ship having their own catchphrase. Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) memorably felt this pressure in Star Trek: Lower Decks when she trialed "Warp me!

Moonage Daydream Soundtrack: Every Song & When It Plays
Image
David Bowie was known for his sweeping changes in style and the radical diversity of his songs, but the Moonage Daydream soundtrack offers a cohesive sense of who he was as a music artist. As a whole, Brett Morgen's documentary presents a kaleidoscopic impression of Bowie through its visual montage and audio samplings, the latter of which includes interview snippets and a wall-to-wall soundscape consisting of more than 40 tunes, most of them by the film's subject. While it's unlikely that anyone would watch this movie without sound, though, the Moonage Daydream soundtrack can be purchased separately as a two-volume album and listened to on its own.

The documentary's sound design involves a collage of David Bowie's music, mashing up songs and remixing others in a way that would seem difficult to turn into a track-by-track album. The Moonage Daydream soundtrack released under the title Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen...

David Bowie’s ‘Divine Symmetry’ Box Set Shows How He Made ‘Hunky Dory’ His Mission Statement
Image
Five years after the release of David Bowie’s first masterpiece, Hunky Dory — which replaced the perception of Bowie as a one-hit space oddity with the idea Bowie as an ever-ch-ch-changing moon-age messiah — he offered up some characteristic mythmaking. In a 1976 Melody Maker interview, Bowie claimed Hunky Dory‘s “Song for Bob Dylan,” a piss-take extraordinaire that Bowie had shrugged off by saying it was how “some” people saw Dylan, in fact, “laid out what I wanted to do in rock.” “It was at that period that I said, ‘Ok,...

How Sound Crew Spent 18 Months Turning Bowie’s ‘Moonage Daydream’ Into an Immersive ‘Fever Dream of Sound and Vision’
Image
Brett Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream,” a freewheeling documentary about David Bowie, doesn’t offer a chronology of the life of the late pop icon. Rather it provides a fever dream of sound and vision, with songs torn apart, reimagined and reassembled in ways that reflect its subject’s chameleonic music and art.

The doc, out now in IMAX theaters, was a labor of love for Morgen that took four years to assemble and edit. It was another 18 months constructing the ambitious soundtrack, which required the talents of the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” team of Ventura, Calif.-based rerecording mixer Paul Massey (with David Giammarco); London-based supervising sound and music editor John Warhurst and supervising sound editor Nina Hartstone; and Dolby Atmos Music Studios.

Veteran mixer Massey recommended Warhurst and Hartstone to Morgen. “We know instinctively what each other is about to do,” Massey explains.

One of the challenges for Massey was...

Keeley Hawes Joins Krysten Ritter As Co-Lead In Orphan Black: Echoes
Image
As much as the original "Orphan Black" series relied on the multifaceted talent of star Tatiana Maslany, the series was never just a one-woman show. While the current "She-Hulk" actor was doing her thing and embodying multiple different characters with widely divergent personalities, she was assisted by a strong supporting cast made up of the likes of Jordan Gavaris' Felix and especially Maria Doyle Kennedy's mother figure, Siobhan. The previously announced spinoff series, titled "Orphan Black: Echoes," appears to be taking this to heart and is off to a strong start with its newest casting.

Deadline reports that British actor Keeley Hawes, known for her performances in the 2018 miniseries "Bodyguard" as well as "Line of Duty," has joined the cast of "Echoes" in a co-lead capacity opposite Krysten Ritter. Although plot details remain under tight wraps, the report indicates that her character will be "a perceptive but sensitive scientist...

The official logline: Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. In Memoriam: Sally Kellerman, Major Houlihan in Film Version of ‘Mash,’ dies at 84
Image
Chicago – As a TV and Movie Star, Sally Kellerman may not be a household name, but as an influencer in the “New American Cinema” of the 1970s she was everywhere. In addition, her TV appearances in the 1960s featured a variety of roles in many of the iconic series of the era, including the original “Star Trek.” She’s probably best known for her movie role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in ‘Mash’ (1970), for which she scored an Oscar nomination. Kellerman died on February 24th, 2022, at age 84.

Sally Claire Kellerman was born in Long Beach, California, and attended Hollywood High School, where her singing voice got noticed by Verve Records … but at the time she was too shy to take the offer. She took on acting classes from noted instructor Jeff Corey in Los Angeles, with classmates like Jack Nicholson and Dean Stockwell. Her first film role was in...

David Bowie Catalog Acquired By Warner Chappell Music In Latest Big-Ticket Music Rights Deal
Image
David Bowie’s catalog has been acquired by Warner Chappell Music, extending a recent string of high-profile music rights deals.

Financial terms were not officially disclosed, but press reports pegged the value at more than $250 million. The rise of streaming as an economic engine, along with the mushrooming array of content into which music can be incorporated, has pushed catalog prices higher. Recent deals have been sewn up by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and the estate of James Brown, among many other artists.

This agreement follows one reached last year between Warner Music Group (parent of Warner Chappell) and the Bowie estate. Under that 2021 deal, Warner Music has licensed worldwide rights to Bowie’s recorded music catalog from 1968.

The global rights deal covers the entire body of work of Bowie, who died of liver cancer in 2016. The catalog includes songs like “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Starman,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,...

Image
Gaumont U.K. has swooped on rights for Greg Buchanan’s debut literary thriller “Sixteen Horses” after a bidding war, and will develop the novel as a drama series.

The studio pursued the book for two years after being snared by the first chapter in 2018. “Sixteen Horses” is published by Mantle Books/Pan Macmillan and set for release in the U.K. on April 29 and July 20 in the U.S. via Flatiron Books. It is already generating buzz, having been picked as one of the literary titles to be covered in BBC Two’s next series of “Between The Covers.”

“Sixteen Horses” is set in a small British seaside community the rest of the world has left behind. Following the discovery of sixteen horses’ heads on a farm, each buried with a single eye facing the low winter sun, the local police detective and forensic veterinarian soon uncover evidence of...

“If I’d Worked With Marty Now, I’d Have Been Bricking Myself”: Asa Butterfield Talks ‘Sex Education’ & Making ‘Hugo’ With Martin Scorsese
Image
Exclusive: Asa Butterfield should have been shooting Season 3 of Sex Education when he sat down with Deadline last month, but like so many other things, the Netflix hit series has been put on ice by coronavirus. His loss was our gain.

Netflix has a hopeful August shoot date, but in the meantime, London-based Butterfield has been occupying himself reading scripts, building a videogame, devouring Mad Men, and writing his first TV script. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a man who has been busy all of his life has remained productive during lockdown.

Butterfield has been on our screens since he was eight years old, starting out on British TV shows like Ashes To Ashes, he soon found himself leading two features in the shape of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Since then, he has worked with the likes of Harrison Ford on Ender’s Game...
