'On The Trail Of The Bike Path Rapist/Murderer'
This was an interesting case, made all the more so because I live in this area: Western New York, where all the rapes and murders took place, from the late '70s to the middle '00s. I know the "bike area" well, a supposedly safe route on the outskirts of the University of Buffalo at Amherst campus.
In a nutshell, after several rapes and killings took place on that bike path - used by many joggers - a man was arrested in the early '80s, tried and convicted. His name was Anthony Capozzi.
Fast-forward about 20 years and you have Buffalo Homicide detective Robert Delano and a crew who, after putting two-and-two together, have strong reservations that the man behind bars all this time is innocent.
Condensing the story, the cops arrest Altemio Sanchez, which shocks the heck out of his family and neighbors. This is the standard-but-true tale of "a wonderful guy.....a nice family man, loved by all in the neighborhood, a charity-giver, church-goer, volunteer youth sports coach, all-around good guy, etc. Now you're telling me he's a viscous rapist and murdered who has been doing this for about 30 years?
Yup, that's the size of it.
Sanchez is one of those psychopaths who could rape and kill someone in the morning and then go out and party with this wife and friends as if nothing had ever happened. Who would suspect? Not even his long-time wife!
Host Keith Morrison, the guy that looks anorexic, hosts this NBC show and is seen mainly interviewing Delano and two other detectives about this case, how it was solved, how it was ignored (despite the exact method of rapes and killings that went on AFTER Capozzi was put behind bars) and how tough it was - believe-it-or-not, to free the innocent man from jail.
Whether you're from the Buffalo area or not, this was an interesting case, filled with frustrations but also miracles things that happened to enable an innocent man to be released. (Capozzi's parents have some interesting things to say.) This is a case you won't forget.
