From chum to chump

Warning: Spoilers
Plankton is up to his usual business. He disguises himself inside of a birthday cake in order to steal the Krabby Patty formula, but once again his plans are foiled. He still manages to mess up the place however, which causes SpongeBob to tearfully ask why he hates them so much. That's when Mr. Krabs starts telling about how he and Plankton first met...

I thought this was a very cool story. It provides a neat insight into how two fastfood resturant owners can start out as friends but end up as bitter enemies. In a way it was kinda suggested already in the season 4 episodes New Leaf and Best Frenemies that their relationship used to be different.

The two of them becoming friends as a result of both being outcasts in school and supporting each other is fascinating to watch, and also really sweet. And even though it's not surprising, seeing Krabs live in a poor home and wearing ragged clothes makes him look more vulnerable, and feels much more true to his character than if he had grown up with an inherited fortune.

When he and Plankton decide to start a business, it turns out Plankton actually helped come up with the recipe. However, it doesn't end up a success at the first try. In fact, the burgers couldn't taste any worse. This is where he and present day Mr. Krabs argue with each other whose fault it really was that they became enemies, Karen eventually providing the real-life version.

Showing three different perspectives on the same kind of event provides some nice extra meat to the story, and I thought it was funny how Plankton and Krabs both claimed they were gonna "rule the world". Plankton for the purpose of mind control, Mr. Krabs for the money. Both scenarios are actually fairly believable. But in reality it was a little more complex than that. I love the joke where Krabs and Plankton let Old Man Jenkins taste the burger, and he's immediately announced dead in the newspaper. Jenkins' excitement followed by the grim aftermath just cracks me up so much. This is what causes Krabs and Plankton to fight, and they tear the recipe apart trying to claim ownership of it. Plankton only gets a small part of it (chum) while Krabs accidentally knocks over a bunch of ingredients which makes the patty meat taste much better.

After the story is over, the two former chums seem sad that their friendship ended and start hugging each other while crying. But of course it's just a ruse for Plankton and he snatches the formula again. Oh well, old habits die hard...

Now let's talk about the Patchy wraparounds. These were just as entertaining as the main plot. In fact, they're the best Patchy wraps I've ever seen. The interactions between Patchy and Potty is full of clever, sarcastic quips. My favorite is when Patchy wears a shirt saying "Kiss The Cook" since it might get him lucky, and Potty retorts "Now I feel sick."

Patchy trying to learn how to flip patties was also hilarious, especially when it's revealed that SpongeBob could do it even as a baby. Then there's the ending where the beloved gorilla from I Had An Accident makes a re-appearance, swinging burgers all over the place, finally landing in the face of the customer that visited the joint before. The boss then calls Patchy to a meeting, presumably to fire him.

In summation, this was a strong start to season 5.

A Rivalry was Born

Great idea for creating this episode with the curiosity of the history between Mr Krabs and Plankton and how they came to be the rivals we all known them to be.

A simple yet great twist was that they started off as friends and co-workers then later on was in competition with one another. I can see this being a true and relatable story in reality with two co-workers becoming enemies and even rivals for being Number 1 in the cooking business. There were obviously some funny moments in the episode which fit well and even moments that made me even more interested in this dynamic.

In a time where the show is at a decline, this episode was definitely needed and necessary for making the show better along with advancing the plot and the audience's interest into Spongebob SquarePants.
