Leslye Headland did not do a convincing enough job to get Disney to approve a second season for The Acolyte. The show could’ve beaten all odds and went on to achieve The Mandalorian-level success by doing a few things right. There was indeed one person from Star Wars‘ most successful TV series, who could’ve done justice to the storyline exploring the dark side.

The Mandalorian brought in actress Bryce Dallas Howard to direct an episode for each of its three seasons. Dallas’ directorial prowess was clearly visible in the Season One episode Sanctuary, which explored the human side of Din Djarin. She also hit the right spots with one of the most beautiful relationships in the Disney Star Wars world.

Christopher Andrews’ Bring Them Down is an endurance test with no payoff. Opening with a jarring car crash on a windy road in rural Ireland, the film soon adds scenes of gruesome animal cruelty, an ear literally being blown off someone’s head, and then further sequences of gruesome animal cruelty. Such onscreen acts can be tremendously moving, of course, when presented in great films––Andrea Arnold’s 2021 documentary Cow a recent example.
Bring Them Down is not a great film. It’s occasionally compelling thanks to its haunting, almost otherworldly locations in Ireland. Mainly, though, what stands out are performances of the ever-intense Christopher Abbott, Nora-Jane Noone, and, most notably, Barry Keoghan. But the actors serve a drama that is relentlessly violent and thoroughly unpleasant. It’s a testament to these performers that they make so much of so little.

"If I wanted to, I could get rid of you." Neon has revealed the first official trailer for Sanctuary, described as a "wickedly dark comedy" about power & control. This first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year, with some critics raving. The film follows a dominatrix, Rebecca, and Hal, her wealthy client, and the chaos that ensues when Hal tries to end their relationship. Christopher Abbott stars with Margaret Qualley. "A battle of wills ensues over the course of one incredibly fraught night, with both Rebecca and Hal struggling to keep the upper hand as the power dynamics swing wildly back and forth." Reviews for the film say it slyly comments on how "some people have more to give than they would ever know without the right person to take it from them." What a spicy trailer! This looks like an intense drama about how power dynamics work – a...

‘Sanctuary’ Trailer: Margaret Qualley Holds Christopher Abbott Hostage in Neon’s Dominatrix Thriller
Margaret Qualley sets out to spank, seduce, and scourge Christopher Abbott in the sexy blackmail drama “Sanctuary.”
Qualley stars as dominatrix Rebecca, whose elite client Hal (Abbott) wants to end their psychosexual relationship after inheriting his late father’s empire. However, Rebecca has other things in mind to punish him. The film takes place over one night in a hotel room.
“Sanctuary” is directed by Zachary Wigon (“The Heart Machine”) from a script by “Homecoming” co-creator Micah Bloomberg. The film debuted at 2022 TIFF and will be released by Neon this spring.
IndieWire critic David Ehrlich praised the film for being “such a salaciously enjoyable slice of snack-sized fun” with an unpredictable plot that toys with what it really means to roleplay.
“‘Sanctuary’ unfolds like a kinky cross between ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ and an off-Broadway play,” Ehrlich wrote. “[It’s] a story about identity and control, but it’s also a movie about the...

The official trailer has been released for Zachary Wigon’s dark thriller “Sanctuary,” starring Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott. The film follows a dominatrix named Rebecca (Qualley) and her rich client Hal (Abbott) as disaster unfolds over the course of a single night in a hotel room.
The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and will open in theaters in the U.S. on May 25.
In “Sancutary,” Abbott plays the son of luxe hotel chain owner who is the successor of the hotel and the rest of his father’s billion-dollar enterprise. Rebecca sees the opportunity to cash in on Hal’s soon-to-be fortune.
As Amy Nicholson wrote in Variety‘s review of the film, “What comes next is a showdown between her force and his financial clout, between labor and the lordly class.”
“But who is he under the bluster?” Nicholson continued. “The dweeb...

One of the highlights from last year’s TIFF is finally heading to theaters this May. Director Zachary Wigon’s Sanctuary, scripted by Micah Bloomberg, pairs Margaret Qualley as a dominatrix with Christopher Abbott, playing her wealthy client who attempts ending their relationship (though she has other ideas). Neon will theatrically release the film on May 19, and ahead of that debut the first trailer has now arrived.

Rewear, repeat, three-peat … The verbiage summing up what’s new on the red carpet in the past year happens to center on what’s old, or at least previously worn. Sustainability and vintage were at the forefront of Hollywood fashion throughout awards season. THR‘s Stylist of the Year Elizabeth Stewart worked with Tár best actress nominee Cate Blanchett to create a red carpet campaign with the smallest environmental footprint possible. “The theme is Cate’s closet and celebrating it,” says Stewart, “and being as conscious as possible of the impact our choices can have.” Law Roach, who made worldwide headlines when he announced his retirement from styling March 14, outfitted Zendaya in internet-shattering 2002 Versace for the NAACP Image Awards. The Mandalorian has quickly become one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise. Pedro Pascal is credited for playing Din Djarin/the Mandalorian, but did you know he isn't always in the suit? During the 2022 Star Wars Celebration event, Pascal joked that Grogu has "two other daddies" because it takes multiple people to bring the character to life. So, who's really wearing the helmet? Well, it's actually a combined effort between Pascal and his doubles Brendan Wayne (who is the grandson of John Wayne) and Lateef Crowder, who both bring their own unique skills to the Mandalorian character.
In the 2020 docuseries "Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian," Pascal explained that Wayne and Crowder are behind a lot of the character's mannerisms and stuntwork. "I'm modeling my performance around their physicality in a lot of ways, and I wouldn't be able to do it without them,...

The "Star Wars" franchise has always been connected. Even in the very beginning, before the character of Luke Skywalker became fully formed, George Lucas planned to connect the different stories of his galaxy far, far away with the framing device of a "Journal of the Whills." While that concept was ultimately abandoned, Lucas never stopped trying to connect his different "Star Wars" projects.
There were the movies, which went back in time to tell the story of how the galaxy ended up the way it is in the original trilogy, but also the "Clone Wars" cartoons were all connected. But the version of "Star Wars" Lucas created and was therefore considered canon is not the same as the Expanded Universe with multiple moving parts and interweaving stories.

Joseph Campbell's hero's journey, aka the monomyth, has long formed the backbone of so much of "Star Wars." Where George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy embraced the template, his prequel films sought to undermine it by questioning whether the very idea of a Chosen One could end up doing more harm than good. Years later, the Disney-backed sequel trilogy would take things a step further by centering on Rey, a protagonist whose lack of ties to any known "Star Wars" characters further subverted the concept one must be "destined" for greatness to bring about positive change in the world around them ... until the trilogy back-tracked on that, anyway.
Getting to the point: In contrast to the Skywalker Saga's examination of myths and how people mythologize heroes, the live-action "Star Wars" shows have found their groove by shifting their attention to a galaxy far, far away's working class and the unsung...

With the anxiously awaited third season of "The Mandalorian" coming to Disney+ on March 1, the current crown jewel of the "Star Wars" galaxy is going to quickly become much larger in scale and more epic in tone. The previous two seasons introduced lone bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorably cute cargo, Grogu, as they traversed the Outer Rim Territories in search of a Jedi capable of training the Mandalorian's small but powerful young passenger. In "The Book of Boba Fett," which essentially operated as "The Mandalorian" season 2.5, Grogu made the choice to return to Mando's care, setting the stage for a Force user to actually be welcomed into Mandalorian culture.
Previous seasons explored the zealotry of Mando's clan, whose members all follow a strict code known as "The Way" where removing your beskar helmet in front of others is strictly forbidden. After being banned for admitting...

Ahead of the upcoming open beta test weekend, Blizzard Entertainment has released a new “World of Sanctuary” video for Diablo IV. This new series of developer insight videos aims to highlight “the wealth of features and design inspirations that make Sanctuary a world worth exploring”.
In this first entry, members of the Diablo IV team discuss how players will be able to jump into an all-immersive experience, and how the team crafted the darkest and most expansive version of Sanctuary in the series. Highlights include:
The art style in Diablo IV is shadowed and macabre, in many ways reminiscent of the grisly atmosphere of Diablo II. There are five unique zones, each with their own grim environments and themed dungeons to match. One of the artistic goals was to make every scene look and feel like a painting, so every color and texture was meticulously made to accomplish the desired grim design.

Exclusive: Black Bear International has launched international sales on Fred & Ginger, the musical about the passionate and explosive relationship between Hollywood dance legends, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
The project was formerly set up at Amazon but is hitting the open market with Black Bear and financier 30West (The Triangle Of Sadness) now aboard. UTA Independent Film Group and 30West will co-rep U.S. rights.
As was previously known, BAFTA-winner Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) will play Astaire, the technically-driven perfectionist, opposite Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as the naturally gifted Rogers. The film is aiming to start production later this year.
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F*cking World) will direct from a script by writer Arash Amel (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare).
Hollywood icons Astaire and Rogers starred in ten movies together, starting with Flying Down to Rio in 1933 and ending with The Barkleys of Broadway...

Activision Blizzard is currently under investigation following accusations of harassment, discrimination, and fostering a hostile work environment. You can read more about the investigation here.
Since World of Warcraft Classic lets players relive the Mmo’s early days, Blizzard is slowly reintroducing fans to classic raids and dungeons. Soon, Wrath of the Lich King Classic players will even be able to experience the original version of one of the game’s best raids, Ulduar. The question now is, “When will Ulduar be released?”
According to the official WoW Classic site, Ulduar will be released for Alliance and Horde players at 3 Pm Pst on January 19. There has been no indication that there will be a staggered global release schedule at this time, though it’s possible that will change in the final moments. At the very least, this is a bit of an unusual release time compared to prior Classic updates.

U.S.-Pakistani director Iram Parveen Bilal has wrapped principal photography at Pakistan locations on her fourth film “One of a Kind” (aka “Wakhri”).
Inspired by and offering tribute to unapologetic social media influencers like the slain Qandeel Baloch, the film is set in the world of patriarchal social media trolling and the burgeoning underground scene of the so-called “misfits” in modern-day Pakistan. It follows a Pakistani schoolteacher who accidentally unleashes the power of social media, unabashedly challenging the patriarchy. As she tries to keep her online identity a secret, she’s gradually exposed to society’s dangerous underbelly and forced to manage the repercussions.
Bilal describes the project as a “grounded masala” film that promises thought-provoking subject matter whilst also featuring loud Punjabi-language club tracks and Urdu-language rap songs to dance and chant with.
Bilal was named one of the directors to watch by the Alliance of Women Directors in 2020. Her previous film,...

One of Amazon Prime’s most recent releases, The Devil’s Hour premiered on 28th October, and is a twisty, high-concept thriller that will keep you guessing all the way through its six episodes.
The series is written by Tom Moran, and comes from the team behind Sherlock and Dracula, including former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. The plot centres on a troubled woman who wakes up every night at 3.33am – the so-called devil’s hour – and sees terrifying visions, which get her caught up in a series of brutal murders and a disappearance from many years ago.
The show boasts an impressive lineup of acting talent – so let’s meet the cast of The Devil’s Hour:
Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd

In cinema, 2022 will be remembered as the year of the donkey and perhaps power moves between the sexes in out of all places … elevators. After a savoury tight space exchange in Triangle of Sadness, it is a long-awaited sophomore film from Zachary Wigon (that played especially well to Toronto auds) that corners Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott in a boutique-like hotel plus elevator for good measure. Less than two weeks after its world premiere, the Neon folks are adding Sanctuary to their TIFF shopping bag which already includes Saint Omer and How to Blow Up a Pipeline.…...

The sex comedy is a dying art form. Whether that's because of shifting societal tastes or a lack of Hollywood interest, there haven't been much of them in recent years. You could arguably trace the decline of the sex comedy to the slowly-tightening sexual purity that has ravished Hollywood over the decade (remember the so-called groundbreaking "Eternals" sex scene?). If we're being honest, however, the quality of mainstream sex comedies also didn't do it any favors.
However, this subgenre could get a new lease on life thanks to Zachary Wigon's "Sanctuary," a dark comedy that premiered this week at the Toronto International Film Festival that uses the allusiveness of Bdsm to tell a grander story of relationship dynamics. The film's main and mostly sole characters, Rebecca (Margaret Qualley) and Hal (Christopher Abbott), are in an unconventional relationship — Hal is a submissive and ultra-rich client of Rebecca, a dominatrix who...

A person hires a dominatrix for the same reason they subscribe to organized religion: to give themselves over to a higher power. In Zachary Wigon’s terrific two-hander “Sanctuary,” he invests the dynamic between a roleplaying sex worker and her longest-term client with all the devotional, frustrated intensity of an implacable deity and the quavering mortal who labors to appease her. (It’s no coincidence that guys like this are always calling their dommes “goddesses.”) She gets money and perhaps some personal fulfillment from her work; he gets purpose and certainty, the messiness of life reorganized into a clear-cut program of tasks to be carried out and approvals to be earned.

Zachary Wigon, director of 2014’s involving but underseen The Heart Machine, offers another story of confused impulses and competing desires in Sanctuary, a two-hander set almost entirely in a single hotel suite. Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott make an exceptionally good team here, in a film that requires a deep sexual chemistry but keeps sex itself almost entirely out of the picture. Careening from one kind of intensity to another, the encounter excites without prurience and, like the transactions it depicts, is more concerned with psychology than sex in any case.
Abbott plays Hal, the heir to a vast hotel fortune who has spent a chunk of his pampered youth in an odd relationship. He regularly meets a dominatrix (Qualley’s Rebecca) in his family’s hotel, writing scripts with which she will goad and humiliate but never sleep with him. Preparing to...

Alvaro Longoria, partner-producer at Morena Films, one of Spain’s top production shingles, is teaming with the Government of Cantabria to create El Bosque del Cine, a pioneering reforestation scheme offering producers a simple but inspiring way of cancelling productions’ carbon footprints.
The program is set to be unveiled on Sept. 13 at a round table at this week’s Santander Film Festival.
El Bosque del Cine aims to plant 34,000 trees over 40 hectares, lent to the program by the Government of Cantabria. Creation will be divided into two phases of 20 hectares each, the first beginning this year. The forest will absorb 19,000 tons of carbon dioxide (Co 2) emissions, equivalent to the footprint of 320 movies.
El Bosque del Cine will offer producers the chance to cancel a movie’s footprint supporting the reforestation at an average cost of about €6,000 per film, Longoria told Variety. Forest paths will sport plaques explaining the local ecology...

If the goal of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is to introduce a lot of the films that will be competing for awards for the next seven months, the jury is still out after the first four days of the 10-day fest.
If the goal is to welcome back audiences and give them a chance to celebrate crowd-pleasing cinema in the kind of communal environment that’s been missing for most of the last two years, the verdict is in and the goal has been achieved.
In the course of 24 hours on two blocks of downtown Toronto’s entertainment district on Friday, three packed houses — no social distancing and few masks — played host to, in chronological order:
