Natalie Portman skipped the Oscars this year because she had given birth to her second child just days before, and for anyone wondering what Portman was up to prior to that, you now have your answer: Shooting a music video for James Blake.
The English musician has premiered the gorgeous black-and-white music video for his song “My Willing Heart,” and it puts a very pregnant Portman front and center as she connects with her unborn child in various locations, including a softly-lit bedroom and a giant pool. Anna Rose Holmer, the breakout director of “The Fits,” shot the video days before Portman gave birth.

2016 was chock-full of big blockbuster releases, many of which either failed to make a sizable profit or were incredibly divisive among audiences. But out of the ashes rose a beautiful flower: the indie film. Yes, independent movies had a wonderful year, some even breaking per-theater records and making their way onto my favorites of 2016 list, which also includes a Denis Villeneuve film, a comic book series, collectibles, an excellent comprehensive horror documentary, and more.
Arrival: Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a beautiful take on language and how communication (or the lack of proper communication) can either doom or ensure our survival as human beings on this planet. The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.
My hope is that the takeaway from Arrival...

“Tracking Shot” is a top of month featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at the projects that are moments away from lensing. This November, we’ve got a fivesome of projects that we feel are worth signaling out, but before we put the focus on those, the previous month was a rather fruitful one for mostly indiewood film productions. Films that we’ll be seeing in 2016 and which are for the most part still filming include: Mark Williams‘ workplace drama The Headhunter’s Calling (with Alison Brie, Gretchen Mol, Gerard Butler, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina), Philippe Falardeau‘s bio boxing drama The Bleeder (with Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss), Taron Lexton’s coming-of-ager In Search of Fellini (with Ksenia Solo, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Maria Bello), Kevin Tent‘s Black List scripted rom-com (with Domhnall Gleeson, Christina Applegate, Thomas Haden Church, Nina Dobrev), Sophie Brooks‘ NYC set Euro-fizzled comedy,...

Shannyn Sossamon became something of an "It Girl" in the early noughties with roles in films including "A Knight's Tale," "40 Days and 40 Nights," the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation "Rules of Attraction" and "The Order" (her second and final film with the late Heath Ledger, whom she called "a very special spirit" but was otherwise reticent to talk about in a short-form interview), but after giving birth to her son Audio in 2003 she all but disappeared from the spotlight. Since then, Sossamon has popped up in everything from well-received indies ("Wristcutters: A Love Story") to big, star-studded Hollywood com-coms ("The Holiday") to TV series (the cult single-season CBS vampire drama "Moonlight"), though recently her resume is heavy on so-called "genre" work, from the 2008 J-horror remake "One Missed Call" to the 2011 post-apocalyptic thriller "The Day" to this year's buzzy summer series "Wayward Pines" and now "Sinister 2," the sequel to the sleeper...

1989's Field Of Dreams might just be Kevin Costner's finest hour. So why does the film still manage to hit so hard?

Is Scandal back to its classic self?
Whereas the previous episode took a significant step in that direction, this week’s hour seemed to complete the long-awaited round-trip, putting Olivia in full, nearly unfettered fixer mode. We had a provocative Case of the Week (an X-rated tell-all by “Kinky Sue,” played by Girls‘ Lena Dunham), and Quinn and Huck (mostly) acting like old-school, not-overly-angsty Gladiators.

Sarah argues that MTV's Scream TV pilot could be a great addition to the franchise...
There are lots of reasons to be pessimistic about the proposed Scream TV show. You could see the idea as a cynical cash grab, an attempt to wring the last few dollars out of the franchise after Scream 4 failed to do as well as its predecessors at the box office. You might wonder why you’d bother taking a recognisable brand name and applying it to what sounds like a completely different property anyway. And you might well look at some of Wes Craven’s non-Scream projects over the last decade and wonder if he’s in touch with what a modern horror audience even wants.
But where’s the fun in that? If you’re a horror fan, you’re probably well acquainted with the thrill...

Jason Dohring hasn't been resting on his laurels since "Veronica Mars" departed The CW's schedule in 2007, but that doesn't mean he wasn't excited about the opportunity to reprise the role of Logan Echolls, Neptune, CA's resident bad boy, when series creator Rob Thomas used the power of Kickstarter to make a "Veronica Mars" movie. Dohring started his TV career in the mid-1990s, making one-off appearances on a wide variety of series, including "Baywatch," "Picket Fences," "Roswell," "The Parkers," and "Jag," but it was "Veronica Mars" which gave him as his first series-regular role. After the show wrapped its three-season run, Dohring jumped right back into work, serving as a cast member in CBS's short-lived vampire drama "Moonlight," pulled a recurring role on The CW's "Ringer," and popped up as a guest star on -- among other series -- "CSI," "Lie to Me," and "Supernatural." All the while, however, rumblings...

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

Without a doubt, when I was looking through the schedule for the first day of Stan Lee’S Comikaze, “Vampires In Pop Culture And Myth” stood out as the must-see. This was due not only to my love of monsters, but also to a star-studded panel moderated by Buffy and Angel star Juliet Landau (Drusilla!), who was joined by the masterminds of Grimm, writers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf (who also worked on Buffy and Angel), Mariana Klaveno of True Blood fame (Lorena to you), musician David J (from the bands Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), Gavin Hignight of FEARnet, and Georges Jeanty, the artist for Buffy Season 8, 9, and for the upcoming Firefly series.
The panel came together, in part, due to a feature length documentary in the works from Juliet Landau and Deverill Weekes, a project that will explore many of the themes and topics discussed in the panel. I...

Looks like Michael Bay has decided to classed up his latest transforming robots from outer space movie with British actress Sophia Myles, an honest to goodness actress who was last seen on TV as the lead in the vampire show “Moonlight” and the Brit spy show “Mi-5″, though some may recall her from the Kate Beckinsale franchise “Underworld” and “Outlander” with Jim Caviezel. Myles joins new franchise leading man Mark Wahlberg on “Transformers 4″, which would find Wahlberg playing a military badass type who, along with his daughter (Nicola Peltz) and her boyfriend (Jack Reynor) will run afoul of human bad guy Kelsey Grammer and, of course, a slew of dangerous transforming robots from outer space out to enslave all of humanity and whatnot. I just decided that I didn't have any unfinished business, and if I did, well, I just hate the parking situation in that area, okay?
Elliot Knight (Jason Dohring, Moonlight and Veronica Mars), the protagonist of writer/director Andrew Disney's feature-length debut, Searching For Sonny, has plenty of unfinished business. When he gets a postcard about his tenth reunion, seemingly containing a message from his former high school pal Sonny Bosco (Masi Oka, Heroes and Hawaii Five-0), he decides to head home,...

Last week, it was announced that Patton Oswalt, who hass appeared on such series as CBS’s Two and a Half Men, Fox’s Raising Hope and Showtime’s United States of Tara, will guest star on the upcoming season of FX’s Justified. He will play a former high school classmate of Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant).
Great guest spots are one of my favorite aspects of television. The occurrence can combine an actor and a show that are perfect for one another — even if it’s just temporarily. It can also draw viewers to a show they haven’t checked out yet, possibly giving a struggling series a boost in ratings. Some of my favorite recent moments on series have incorporated fantastic guest stars, including Parker Posey on FX’s Louie and Fox’s New Girl, Giancarlo Esposito on NBC’s Community and...

It is a story of love and loss. You watched a show and you fell in love, only to have some faceless network executive pull the plug on it and break your heart.
We've all been there. Perhaps you cried, threw things at your TV or drowned your sorrows in a pint of Rocky Road. Television is a harsh business, but we can mourn the loss together and help one another through the hard times.
This list could easily be doubled, maybe tripled - but let's take a look at a few one season wonders we still wish were on the air...

It’ll be like homecoming week for Smallville‘s Lana when Beauty and the Beast star Kristin Kreuk starts working again with Smallville’s former co-showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders, who have now taken the same job with The CW‘s freshman show, an updated and reworked version of the 1980s Beauty and the Beast series.
THR broke the news, reporting that Peterson and Souders will be joining current showrunners/executive producers/writers Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (Brothers & Sisters) as showrunners, which one has to think will be an interesting situation; four showrunners? Peterson and Souders most recently worked as consulting producers on yet another CW show, the one-season-only The Secret Circle.

The CW would like to take over our TVs on Wednesday, with DC Comics-based we’ve-been-waiting-so-long-for-this Arrow at 8/7c, followed by Supernatural at 9/8c. What a great pairing! And Not on a Friday, hooray! The CW, you are now granted our TVs on Wednesday nights.

Realizing that he's become a bit too attached to the pain medication prescribed after a shoulder injury, "Hawaii Five-0" star Alex O'Loughlin is taking a break from the CBS drama to seek treatment.
The sophomore show will continue shooting without O'Loughlin. Currently on Episode 20 of the season, the actor will be absent for at least one episode.
"We respect and support Alex's decision," says the production company statement. "Everyone at CBS Television Studios and 'Hawaii Five-0' wishes him well and we look forward to his return."
O'Loughlin has been a favorite of the network since his first series for it, the vampire drama "Moonlight," in 2007. He went on to star on the short-lived medical show "Three Rivers" in 2009 before the "Hawaii Five-0" reboot took off in 2010.

Something very meta is happening on Fox’s Bones. Long-time followers of this series are very aware of the quirky Dr. Temperance Brennan and her FBI partner Special Agent Seeley Booth, and how very often episodes reflect real world strangeness – for example, Zooey Deschanel appearing on the show opposite her sister Emily Deschanel (Dr. Brennan) as her second cousin. The commentary that followed…
Booth: Oh wow! Who’s this, your sister?
Brennan: No. Um, my second cousin.
Margaret (Zooey): I’m Margaret.
Brennan: There’s no resemblance.
It’s amusing because they do look ridiculously similar even for siblings, and of course, they are actually sisters. This kind of eccentricity is all over the series. But it is an integral part in making the show what it is. I wouldn’t be half as interested in the show if the characters were not as odd as they are. Quirky...

Supernatural took viewers back to 1944 last Friday, paying tribute to The Untouchables and airing a generally fun episode.
What did our Round Table team of Carissa Pavlica, Kate Moon and Sean McKenna think of the time travel? What were their favorite scenes? Read the Q&A below and chime in with your take on these questions...
--------------------------------
What was your favorite scene or quote from the episode?
Carissa: The repeated references Dean made about the Untouchables, down to "I'm never watching that movie again." Still makes me laugh.
Kate: I found Dean and Sam's banter about anime hilarious. It is an underrated "art" form. Looking for more anime... or are you strictly into Dick now?
Sean: I loved all the Untouchables references as well. It was hilarious watching Dean try to fit in and everyone looking at him like he was crazy. The Chicago Way? Who talks like that?

The search is on to find an actor or actress that can fill the shoes of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. But will the tradition of looking back in order to look forward continue with Matt Smith's new companion in "Doctor Who"? Sophia Myles, who played Beths in the short-lived CBS series "Moonlight" as well as the British "Mi-5," is now being rumored as the actress to play the new companion in "Doctor Who." And the rumor -- well, it started on Twitter. "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat got it started on Jan. 11 when he told his 215,000 followers to give the same courtesy to Myles. He explained that Myles -- a former girlfriend to "Doctor Who" star David Tennant -- was Madame De Pompadour from the "Who" episode "The Girl in the Fireplace," which Moffat wrote under Russell T. Davies. Asking ...

After an run on CBS's gone-too-soon vampire series, "Moonlight," underrated actor Jason Dohring went under the radar for a while, so we're glad that he's back with a vengeance. The "Veronica Mars" bad boy has been our favorite part of Sarah Michelle Gellar's "Ringer" for the last few weeks, and now he's headed to another CW favorite, "Supernatural."
As TVLine reports, Dohring will appear in a January 2012 episode of "Supernatural" as the God of Time, Chronos. He's often portrayed with a long, gray beard -- but we're guessing that if you were the boss of time, you'd turn the clock back on the aging process a bit, too.
Chronos is responsible for the episode's time travel aspect -- in the episode, we'll go back in time to meet FBI agent Eliot Ness (Nicholas Lea), who wasn't just a Prohibition-enforcing fed, but, as it turns out, also a supernatural hunter.
