Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which is your favorite scripted TV show about sports? Old and current shows are fair game.
June Thomas (@junethomas), Slate
I was a big fan of the Freeform show “Make It or Break It,” about the lives of a group of elite gymnasts working toward their dream of competing in the Olympics. Even typing that sentence, I know how hokey it sounds, and yes, it touched on all the clichés about women’s gymnastics – eating disorders, overburdened parents, inappropriate relationships with coaches – but you know what, all those things bubble up in the real sport with depressing regularity.

Bryan Singer will direct the pilot of Battle Creek, the upcoming CBS series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. CBS has already ordered 13 episodes, but the director of a pilot episode ends up determining the look and feel of the entire series. That will be the fourth time Singer has directed a pilot, the first being House. (He also directed the Football Wives and Mockingbird Lane pilots, which didn’t become series.)

NBC has recently ordered a pilot for a reimagining of the '60s TV show The Munsters and now Bryan Singer, helmer of such films as X-Men and Superman Returns, is negotiating a deal to direct it as well as produce. Based on a script by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies), the show is "described as an imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama." Those familiar with the original show will know the word "drama" hardly categorizes the zany antics of its characters, so, based on that, expect vast changes. This won't be Singer's first experience with TV as he's previously directed the pilots for House and Football Wives. The show was in development for last season with Guillermo del Toro attached, but it eventually stalled out and del Toro moved on to Pacific Rim. While the reimagining could be drastically different from the original, it's worth...

NBC's reworking of "The Munsters" has added another high-profile Bryan behind the scenes.
Bryan Singer ("Superman Returns," "X-Men") will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer alongside creator Bryan Fuller, Deadline reports. The pilot will be Singer's first directorial effort for TV since 2007, when he helmed the un-picked-up pilot of "Football Wives" for ABC.
Singer also directed the pilot and third episode of "House" and remains an exec producer of the show. He was an exec producer of ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money" as well.
Fuller's vision for "The Munsters" is as an hour-long show, not the half-hour comedy the 1960s series was. We're guessing it will have a lot of the same sweet-sad vibe of Fuller's previous shows ("Pushing Daisies," "Wonderfalls" and "Dead Like Me"), along with striking visual elements.
We're still not sold on whether it will work, but we are rather curious to see what a Fuller-Singer "Munsters" might look like.

In 2010 when talk first started to surface about a new version of The Munsters, it was to be a collaboration [1] between Guillermo del Toro and Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies). The show stalled out and when NBC eventually asked Fuller to rework the pilot script [2] into something edgier, Guillermo del Toro was already moving forward with Pacific Rim. A new name from the roster of geek-friendly film directors has joined the production, however. Bryan Singer will now act as executive producer of the new Munsters, and he'll direct the pilot, too. Deadline [3] says that Singer is in talks for the jobs right now, and reports that Fuller's new pilot script "calls for striking visuals mixed with all the classic Munsters archetypes." Singer has exec producer and pilot experience with House, and he directed ABC's Football Wives pilot, too. So this isn't his first brush with TV by any means.

Exclusive: NBC’s The Munsters will be brought to you by The Bryans. X-Men and Superman Returns helmer Bryan Singer is finalizing a deal to direct and executive produce Bryan Fuller’s reboot of the 1960s comedy, which recently received a pilot order by NBC. Universal Television is producing the project, described as an imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama. Singer, who had been interested in the project since before it got the greenlight by NBC two weeks ago, will executive produce with Fuller. After originally developing The Munsters last season, Fuller redeveloped it with NBC’s new executive team this summer and delivered his new script at the beginning of this month. 'Football' still in ABC's game
ABC's drama "Football Wives" is going into overtime. ABC Studios, which produced the pilot based on the popular ITV series "Footballers Wives", has extended the options on the actors, an indication that the project remains in contention at ABC. "Football Wives", written by Marco Pennette and directed by Bryan Singer, was one of ABC's highest-profile pilots this past development season, and its failure to make it onto the network's schedule was considered a surprise. Revolving around the wives of professional football players, the show stars Gabrielle Union, Lucy Lawless, Kiele Sanchez, Ving Rhames and James Van Der Beek. Although ABC still has the rights to "Wives", sources said that several other networks, including NBC and Fox, have expressed interest if ABC decides to pass on it. ABC Studios is producing the project with Brancato/Salke and Shed Prods.

'Starship' troopers: 3 board Fox pic
Gabrielle Union, Ed Helms and Elizabeth Banks are joining Eddie Murphy's crew in Starship Dave for 20th Century Fox.
The fish-out-of-water comedy that reteams Murphy with his Norbit director, Brian Robbins, will see Union and Helms playing crew members of a spaceship that takes the shape of a human. Banks will play Murphy's love interest.
Shooting is set to begin in the next few weeks.
David T. Friendly is producing through his Deep River Prods. along with Jon Berg and Todd Komarnicki for Guy Walks Into a Bar. Fox vp production Steve Asbell will oversee for the studio.

It's operated by 100 human-looking, quarter-inch-tall aliens seeking a way to save their planet. Complications ensue when their captain (also played by Murphy) falls in love with an Earth woman who always picks losers to date.
Union, who plays the chief cultural officer of the miniature crew, is starring in Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls. She next appears in the television series Football Wives for ABC.

Networks pilot orders shun serial dramas
Heavily serialized dramas are out, soaps and high-concept procedurals are in, The Bionic Woman and Philip Marlowe are back, and one-hour British imports are hotter than ever.
Overall, the five networks have ordered 45 drama pilots, on par with the 47 greenlighted last year.
View 2007-08 drama pilots by network: ABC | CBS | NBC | Fox | the CW
Dubbed as "the season of serialized dramas," 2006-07 yielded only one big hit in the genre, NBC's Heroes, and one modest success, CBS' Jericho. With a number of high-profile, heavily serialized new shows such as ABC's The Nine and Six Degrees, NBC's Kidnapped and Fox's Vanished long gone, the networks opted for more close-ended dramas for next fall.
A record four British drama concepts have landed pilot orders: Life on Mars and Football Wives (the latter based on Footballers' Wives) at ABC, Viva Laughlin! (based on Viva Blackpool!) at CBS and a project based on Wild at Heart at the CW. They have attracted impressive auspices, with David E. Kelley writing and executive producing Mars, Bryan Singer directing and executive producing Wives and Hugh Jackman executive producing and guest starring in and Gabriele Muccino directing and executive producing "Laughlin!"
Street cops are back in favor after disappearing from primetime following the end of ABC's NYPD Blue. CBS (Protect and Serve), NBC (Ft. Pit), Fox (K-Ville) and CW (Gravity) are all on the beat with police dramas.
