1960s sexism + racism = an unappealing mess
Fun mistakes with stereotypical mispronunciations and cultural ignorance plus stereotypical jealousy = a big, unappealing mess, especially in involving a star with purported feminist attitudes.
I have the same problem with That Girl that I have with The Mary Tyler Moore show, that both stars were purported feminists but allowed their shows to present, over and over, the very tropes they were supposedly combatting: heteronormative female jealousy, age discrimination, etc.
I find it very hard in this day and age to watch either of these shows I grew up with without feeling huge disappointment.
I still admire Marlo for her charity work, which makes it doubly painful.
