When Joey King was approached by director Thomas Kail to star as Halina Kurc in “We Were the Lucky Ones,” “It was just kind of an immediate yes,” King said to IndieWire. “No thoughts, just yes.”
Hulu’s eight-part adaptation of “Lucky Ones,” based on the beloved 2017 bestseller by Georgia Hunter, tells the story of the real-life Kurc family, a tight-knit Jewish tribe who lived in Poland during World War II. Prior to the war, the five young adult siblings — Halina included — are scattered all over Europe. Somehow, miraculously, all five (as well as their parents) survive Russian gulags, German society, Nazis overtaking their home, and much, much more. (This reporter hit up Wikipedia after every episode stunned that one family could overcome so many different atrocities.)

Sex Education‘s protagonist, Otis Milburn has always been a red flag. Not only in terms of love but in friendship too. Let me explain. The first thing we need to acknowledge is the fact that Otis is played by child actor Asa Butterfield, who has been a megastar ever since his young self played Bruno in 2008 drama film, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. We don’t know if it is just a simple coincidence that Asa looks like an innocent fellow or if he was just the best guy to cast for the role of Otis (although he does a very convincing job). But this makes us especially inclined to like the character, no matter what he does. He’s always the good guy, you know? Plus, what teenager doesn’t make stupid mistakes? Wrong!
Yes, there are some good things about Otis, like his emotional intelligence, but...

Netflix’s “Sex Education” is in session for one last season. Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey), Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) and more return for the fourth and final installment of the heartwarming and intimate dramedy series. The Moordale Secondary School crew face a whole new school year at Cavendish College, where most of them have transferred after the shut-down of their previous stomping grounds, run into the ground by Jemima Kirke’s Headmistress Hope Haddon.
While Otis, Eric, Viv, Jackson, Ruby, Aimee, Isaac and more have to navigate a new social scene at Cavendish, Maeve is across the pond in America taking a fancy writing seminar class. Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) has left school completely. Unfortunately, some staple characters from previous seasons such as Anwar Bakshi (Chaneil Kular) and Olivia Hanan (Simone Ashley) or Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison) and Lily Iglehart (Tanya Reynolds) won’t return this season,...

Netflix is about to remove a alrge selection of movies and TV shows from its service.
Every month, without fanfare, numerous titles are removed from the streamer.
This means that, should something be on your watchlist, it will vanish until it’s added again.
Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

Israeli director Leon Prudovsky, whose film “My Neighbor, Adolf” world premieres Thursday in Locarno Film Festival’s Piazza Grande, will next be making a feature version of his 2012 short “Welcome, and our Condolences.”
The project, titled “Our People,” is a multi-character tragicomedy, centering on a Russian Jewish family traveling to Israel in the early 1990s. On the plane their grandmother dies, which places them in a tricky situation: they are worried that they will lose their right to settle in Israel, so decide to pretend she’s still alive. Prudovsky himself was born in Russia and migrated to Israel at that time.
“My Neighbor, Adolf” is also a tragicomedy. It stars David Hayman, whose credits include “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” “Sid and Nancy” and TV series “Taboo,” as Polsky, a grumpy old man living in the wilds of Colombia in 1960.

While the actor is arguably most known for his role as Otis Milburn in Netflix's acclaimed comedy series "Sex Education," his extensive acting résumé includes credits in "Hugo," "The Space Between Us," and, most recently, Netflix's horror flick "Choose or Die."
Butterfield started his career at a young age and rose to stardom for his stunning portrayal of Bruno in the historical drama "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Following his success from the film, the actor continued to land several leading roles throughout the 2010s, starring in films like "Ender's Game" alongside Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin, as well as "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children."

All rights for North America have gone to Cohen Media Group, Signature Entertainment has acquired the U.K./Ireland rights, I Wonder took Italy, Lumix Media has South Korea and Tohokushinsha Film took Japan.
The film, set in 1960, centers on Polsky, a Holocaust survivor, who lives in the remote Colombian countryside. One day, when a mysterious old German man moves in next door, he suspects that his new neighbor is Adolf Hitler. Since nobody believes him, he embarks on a mission to uncover the evidence. In order to gather it, however, he will need to come closer to his neighbor than he would like — so close that the two could almost become friends.

StudioCanal’s Red Production Company has secured the rights to Boy In The Striped Pyjamas author John Boyne’s latest novel The Echo Chamber, with Boyne set to adapt as a 10 x 30-minute series.
Red said the deal took place following a “highly competitive auction” for the book, which has already topped Irish bestseller lists after being published over the summer.
The Echo Chamber follows The Cleverley family, comprised of a TV interviewer dad, novelist mum and adult children, who live a privileged life but are just one Tweet away from disaster. A week may be a long time in politics, but five days is all it takes for the lives of the Cleverleys to be turned on their heads.
Boyne achieved global recognition for 2006 Holocaust YA novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, which was turned into a Mark Herman film starring Asa Butterfield, Vera Farmiga and David Thewlis.

HBO has released the first teaser for yet another prestige limited series, which are quickly becoming the network’s bread and butter since the hits of “Big Little Lies” and “The White Lotus.” Starring Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and “Harry Potter” favorite David Thewlis, “Landscapers” is a darkly comic mystery about a seemingly ordinary married couple who become the subjects of a murder investigation after two dead bodies are discovered in their back garden. Set in the northern English city of Nottingham and inspired by real-life events, the four-part series is the creation of debut screenwriter Ed Sinclair, who also happens to be Colman’s husband.
A little more about the unique love story: “As the investigation moves forward, inspired by Susan’s obsession with old Westerns and classic cinema, the fantasists cast themselves as Hollywood heroes in narratives of their own invention. Powered by Susan’s extraordinary imagination,...

A Traveler at the Gates of Wisdom is the latest historical novel from Irish author John Boyne (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas). Exclusive: Asa Butterfield should have been shooting Season 3 of Sex Education when he sat down with Deadline last month, but like so many other things, the Netflix hit series has been put on ice by coronavirus. His loss was our gain.
Netflix has a hopeful August shoot date, but in the meantime, London-based Butterfield has been occupying himself reading scripts, building a videogame, devouring Mad Men, and writing his first TV script. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a man who has been busy all of his life has remained productive during lockdown.
Butterfield has been on our screens since he was eight years old, starting out on British TV shows like Ashes To Ashes, he soon found himself leading two features in the shape of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Since then, he has worked with the likes of Harrison Ford on Ender’s Game...

“My name is Udo,” says Udo Kier sitting in his home in Palm Springs, a converted library built by Swiss architect Albert Frey. The German actor – whose more than 260 screen credits include films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier and Alexander Payne – has connected by Zoom for our call, which I had been told was no certainty, due to his lack of technical savvy. Before we can start the interview Kier takes me on a video tour of his house – pointing out the art collection, with works by Andy Warhol and David Hockney, and a life-size plastic deer, with a bandaged leg.
We are joined on the call by Scottish actor David Hayman, supping from a pint of Guinness, and Israeli producer Haim Mecklberg. But the subject of our conversation lies elsewhere, in a remote corner of Colombia, the setting for the tragicomedy “My Neighbor Adolf,...

Sales agent Beta Cinema is launching its Cannes Market slate, which is headlined by psychological thriller “Corvidae,” with a playful and novel approach. The company has produced an entertainment show, in the style of a late-night chatshow, featuring its sales team pitching its films and presenting exclusive clips from them. Variety has been given an exclusive sneak peek at the show before it goes live on Friday.
Beta Cinema CEO Dirk Schürhoff is the charismatic host of chatshow “The Beta Cinema Show,” filmed at the company’s offices in Oberhaching, near Munich, while Thorsten Ritter, exec VP acquisitions, sales and marketing, leads the house band on electric guitar. Its sales executives beam in their reports from around the world, while the kangaroo from the hit film “The Kangaroo Chronicles” assists. The tone is fun and tongue-in-cheek, but it’s a serious attempt to add a bit of showbiz pizzazz to the virtual market format.

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. Other high-profile losses include Ghost Rider,...

Israel’s 2-Team Productions, Poland’s Film Produkcja and Vandalo Colombia are partnering on “My Neighbor Adolf,” an offbeat comic drama starring David Hayman (“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”) and Udo Kier that is set to begin filming in Medellin, Colombia, later this month. Leon Prudovsky will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Dmitry Malinsky.
The film tells the story of Polsky (Hayman), a lonely and grumpy Holocaust survivor living in the Colombian countryside, who suspects that his new neighbor is Adolf Hitler (Kier). When nobody believes him, he sets off on a detective mission to uncover the truth, soon discovering that the only way to prove it is to befriend his mysterious neighbor.
Prudovsky said: “‘My Neighbor Adolf’ is a comedy, because a Holocaust survivor, who believes his new neighbor is Hitler, is comic. Because an old man obsessively conducting an absurd investigation is comic.
“But then again,...

By now, there's a good chance you've heard of Sex Education on Netflix (in the case that you haven't already binge-watched the whole thing) and thus, you've also heard of 22-year-old British actor Asa Butterfield. He plays Otis Milburn in the buzzy show: a timid, insecure freshman navigating the waters of high school and, well, sex. It's a must see - not only because it's seriously relatable, but because it touches on the awkward stuff that few shows will really dig into.
But there's also a good chance you recognize him from his lead role as a young boy in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in 2008, Ender's Game in 2013, The Space Between Us in 2017, or maybe one of his many other big-screen appearances. Asa's acting career has only just begun, and we can't wait to see his résumé bulk up even more in the next few years. In the meantime,...
