Entrenched in a world of elves, dwarves, orcs, ordained men, wizards and Harfoots, the three leading men of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 couldn’t be more down to Middle-earth if they tried.

Actors Charlie Vickers, Charles Edwards and Daniel Weyman sat down for a chat at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience to talk about their experience filming the epic fantasy series.

Check out the conversation in the video, and scroll down for photos from the event.

Created by J.D. We wants it. We needs it. But we gotta waits for it.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (working title), the highly anticipated Lotr spin-off film from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, will hit theaters in December 2027. Yes, you read that right — moviegoers have to wait two-and-a-half years to see their favorite pale-skinned Middle-earth monster from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy world up on the big screen again. Read on for everything to know about the new movie, including information on the cast, release date, and director.

Who's been cast in The Hunt for Gollum?

As of this writing, only Andy Serkis has been announced as starring in the new film. And yes, he's reprising his role as Gollum, a creature who was obsessed with the One Ring (which he called "my precious"). The English actor rose to fame in the early aughts for...

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum finally announces release date
'Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' will be released on December 17 2027.The spin-off movie of the hit franchise - which is based on the book series by J.R.R. Tolkien - will see Andy Serkis reprise his role as the titular monster, and on Thursday (08.05.25) developers New Line Cinema and Warner Bros announced the official release date.As well as starring, Serkis will take on the role of director, whilst Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens will serve once again as producer on the project.Jackson previously explained that it it made sense to explore Gollum/Sméagol more than the likes of Aragorn (Viggo Mortenson) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) with the upcoming film. He told Deadline: "The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic."I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike,...

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum sets holiday release date
Image
It's official: we're going back to Middle-earth. Today Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the release date for its next Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum: December 17, 2027. We'll be spending Christmas with Sméagol!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are working together again on The Hunt for Gollum and a second, as yet unnamed Lord of the Rings movie. They're part of the team that made the legendary trilogy of movies in the early 2000s, so obviously their involvement in The Hunt for Gollum bodes well.

Andy Serkis will of course return to the role of Gollum, which he played in both The Lord of the Rings movies as well as the first movie in The Hobbit trilogy. He's also the director for The Hunt for Gollum, which I imagine means we're going to be getting quite deep into Sméagol's psyche in this new movie.

‘Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum’ Set for December 2027, Next ‘Evil Dead’ Movie Nabs Summer 2026 Release
Image
The wait is over.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema revealed Thursday that Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will open in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027. So far, it has the lucrative year-end corridor to itself, but that’s sure to change as other studios fill in their calendars.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens — the Oscar-winning team behind the blockbuster The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies — are reuniting to produce two new films from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth for the Warners-owned New Line. Zane Weiner is also producing.

Andy Serkis will both direct Gollum and star in the titular role Walsh and Boyens are penning the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The director of the second film has yet to be announced.

Fans of the Evil Dead franchise also got good news on Thursday. In a twinned announcement, New...

‘Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’ Sets Pre-Christmas 2027 Release
Image
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have set a Dec. 17, 2027 theatrical release for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Currently Disney has an untitled Star Wars movie in Comscore on that that 2027 date, but that probably just hasn’t been scrubbed from the system yet. As we know, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling is dated for May 28, 2027. Universal has an untitled date reservation for Dec. 22, 2027.

That’s the corridor by the way that previous Peter Jackson directed Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies have bowed within. The first of the two films The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (*Wt) will be directed by and star Andy Serkis in the title role.

‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Sets December 2027 Release Date; Warner Bros. Also Dates New ‘Evil Dead’ and M. Night Shyamalan Movies for 2026
Image
Gollum will officially return to the big screen for Christmas 2027. Warner Bros. has announced that Andy Serkis’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will open in theaters Dec. 17, 2027. The studio has also dated the next “Evil Dead” movie, starring Souheila Yacoub, for July 24, 2026, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Remain” for Oct. 23, 2026. Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters star in Shyamalan’s latest.

The release date for “The Hunt for Gollum” is hardly a surprise given all six movies in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogies opened in December ahead of the Christmas holiday. Each trilogy powered to $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

Warner Bros. first announced “The Hunt for Gollum” last summer and said it would be ready for theaters in 2026. The film has been delayed a year. Serkis is directing the tentpole and once again starring in the title role,...

"If Peter Says 'Jump,' I Say, 'How High?'”: Orlando Bloom Would Be Keen To Play Legolas Again
Image
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy brought to life the Third Age of Middle-earth in a way that had not been seen before. Jackson's movies were perfectly cast, with actors who perfectly embodied and delivered on characters fished out of J.R.R. Tolkien's lore. One of them was Orlando Bloom, who played the perfect archer, the Elvish prince, Legolas. A panel with original Lord of the Rings cast members was hosted by Screen Rant at AwesomeCon, and with a wave of new spinoff movies based on Middle-earth,withtheupcoming The Hunt For Gollum the first. The question of who returns to the franchise hung thick in the air.

Bloom appeared as Legolas first in The Fellowship of the Ring when his character, as well as a host of others, attended the Council of Elrond at Rivendell. One of the best elven characters in Tolkien's lore, the Prince of Mirkwood,...

"No One Said Anything": Original 'Fargo' Star Reveals Why She Didn't Return
Image
Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Tolman never came back after Season 2, but we now know this wasn’t due to a lack of interest. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Tolman was asked about her time on Fargo, and she spoke about it fondly but also recalled how difficult it was to stand on the sidelines after departing the show:

The Actor Behind The Lord Of The Ring's Beloved Elven Queen Wants To Return, But Should They?
Image
The Og "Lord of the Rings" crew has been in the news cycle a lot lately. With Warner Bros. planning new live-action J.R.R. Tolkien film adaptations, everyone is wondering who could show up again after a 20-year hiatus from Middle-earth acting.

You can count Liv Tyler among those ready to jump right back into the action. Tyler is, of course, famous for playing the Elven queen Arwen in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. While the character has a minor role in Tolkien's source material, Arwen is busy in the movies. She fills in for the Elf-lord Glorfindel by saving Frodo (Elijah Woods) from the Black Riders and encourages Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) to fulfill his destiny and confront Sauron. She was even filmed in various fight sequences, including the Battle of Helm's Deep (although that was later cut during post-production).

Now, Tyler has gone on record saying...

The Hobbit Or The Lord Of The Rings: Which Trilogy Grossed More At The Box Office?
Image
Which one of the trilogies, The Hobbit Or The Lord Of The Rings slayed the box office?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Middle-earth is one of the most famous fantasy realms in the world. First brought to life by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit (1937) and expanded through the epic scope of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (1954–55), these stories laid the foundation for modern fantasy storytelling. The appeal of Tolkien’s world prompted filmmaker Peter Jackson to adapt these monumental works into two separate trilogies, each packed with sweeping battles, iconic portrayals, and an unforgettable soundtrack.

Released between 2001 and 2003, The Lord of the Rings film trilogy became a cinematic landmark, earning critical acclaim and bagging 17 Academy Awards. A decade later, Jackson returned to Middle-earth with The Hobbit prequel trilogy, stretching the slim novel into three action-heavy blockbusters. Both trilogies thrilled fans and filled theatres across the globe, but which one reigned supreme at the box office?...

The Low-Budget Lord Of The Rings Adaptation From The '90s Is Terrifying
Image
Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy may be the gold standard for that hallowed fantasy saga, but it isn't the first attempt to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's famous three-part narrative into a cinematic format. There have actually been quite a few different iterations of that story, some relatively good, some bad, and some downright terrifying.

Among the entries in the Middle-earth annals that fall into that last category is a 1990s gem that came straight out of the Soviet archives. This utterly unique adaptation is titled "Khraniteli" (which translates as "The Keepers" or "The Guardians"). It was produced by Leningrad Television and came out on April 13, 1991, just eight months before the dissolution of the Ussr.

"Khraniteli" was technically released as a children's television program and was considered lost media for decades — until it resurfaced when 5Tv, Leningrad Television's successor, re-released it online for all the world to see in the 2020s.

Why is The Wheel of Time necessary fantasy reading?
Image
For those of us who love the fantasy and science-fiction genres, we are lucky to live in an era of abundance. Genre television has really taken off, leading to shows like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, and The Legend of Vox Machina. Books, e-books, audiobooks, and podcasts abound, and there are more people reading and writing for these genres than ever before. Without throwing any shade at the early years of genre storytelling, it’s good to see that The Hobbit and Frankenstein aren’t the only options on bookshelves anymore.

With so much content and so many options, one might ask: what is necessary reading in the fantasy genre? Which novels fundamentally set the standard for what the genre is and should look like while bringing their readers joy, entertainment, sorrow, solace, wonder, and all of the other emotions...

15 Directors Who Secretly Act in Their Own Films
Image

But every now and then, the minds behind the magic step out from behind the camera and into the spotlight. Sometimes it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, other times they go full Clint Eastwood and headline their own films. Whether it’s a cheeky Easter egg, a symbolic gesture, or just plain “hey, they’re great on screen too,” these cinematic geniuses know how to steal the scene—even when it’s not their job to.

In this list, we are diving into 15 directors who not only brought their vision to life but even sneaked in a little screen time of their own,...

'Lord of the Rings' Crew Had a Hilarious Reaction to Andy Serkis' First Gollum Appearance On-Set
Image
Andy Serkis is returning to The Lord of the Rings franchise as the director of The Hunt for Gollum, but during a recent appearance at C2E2 2025, the actor took everyone back almost 25 years when he made his first on-set appearance in the now infamous motion capture suit that helped him bring Gollum to life.

As per Popverse, Serkis shared his memories of turning up on set more than four months into filming, and became an instant curiosity to the crew, who didn’t quite know what to make of “this guy with a shaved head in this very thin suit going, ‘[Gollum noise].’” He said:

“These guys had been filming for about 4 or 5 months before I got out to New Zealand. I was going through the preparations for becoming Gollum, and I was often on my own and crawling about, and kind of practicing, and doing what I was doing. And then the day came.

Bon Iver Releases New Album Sable, fABLE: Stream
Image
Bon Iver has released his fifth studio album, Sable, fABLE.

Produced by Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon along with Jim-e Stack, Sable, fABLE is a continuation of the three-song Sable EP that arrived last October as a prologue of sorts. Now, the project’s 12 tracks are available in their entirety, showcasing Vernon’s enduring knack for blending visceral songcraft with inventive production.

Standout tracks like the single “Everything Is Peaceful Love” and the Dijon and Flock of Dimes-featuring “Day One” are exemplary of that sound, pairing soulful, melodic vocals with deconstructed pop arrangements, lush with beeps, boops, samples, and tasteful textural touches, like the the pedal steel on the former track.

Other highlights include the “If Only I Could Wait” with Danielle Haim, as well as the Sable portion of the album, which explores an emotional arc “from accepting anxiety to accepting guilt to accepting hope.”

Orlando Bloom eyes Lord of the Rings return
Orlando Bloom wants to return to ‘The Lord of the Rings’.The 48-year-old actor portrayed the elf Legolas from 2001’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ until ‘The Return of the King’ in 2003 - and then again in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy - and has now teased he would want to reprise the role if series director Peter Jackson ever asked him to.Speaking on a panel at AwesomeCon, Bloom said: "I always think that if Pete says, ‘Jump’, I say, ‘How high?’"It's funny because I think the elves go through so much of this world so many times because they're ageless. I was in ‘The Hobbit’, and it was really interesting revisiting the world. It was so different from ‘Rings’ as an experience. "It was a beautiful time, but this idea of kind of going back is like ... ‘Absolutely, who wouldn't want to go back to that place?’"Even so,...

“Gandalf does not get drunk”: Sir Ian McKellen Put Peter Jackson in His Place Over 1 ‘Lord of the Rings’ Suggestion for a Scene
Image
Sir Ian McKellen wasn’t about to let Gandalf go full party wizard. When Peter Jackson floated a scene with the grey wizard getting a little too tipsy, McKellen firmly shut it down. In his eyes, Gandalf was all wisdom and grace, not the type to down ale and stumble around the Shire.

It was a rare moment where the actor overruled the director, and yep, Middle-earth is better for it. A drunk wizard might work in other franchises, but definitely Not in The Lord of the Rings.

The actor revealed in a previous interview that he became so overwhelmed by his role in the film that he ended up creating a two-hour edit of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy to clear his mind.

It’s Criminal Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Hobbit’ Never Happened but His Highest Rated Movie Is Proof It’s Not Too Late
Image
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro rose to prominence during the early 1990s, establishing himself as one of the best filmmakers with a unique storytelling style. Del Toro was initially tapped to helm a live-action adaptation of the J. R. R. Tolkien novel The Hobbit.

Despite working on the project, del Toro eventually left the director’s chair with Peter Jackson turning it into a trilogy. However, following his Academy Award win, del Toro has seen a resurgence in popularity and recently delivered one of his highest-rated movies.

A Unique Filming Technique Helps The Lord of the Rings Movies Stand the Test of Time
Image
Quick LinksPeter Jackson Preferred the Use of Miniatures to Other TechniquesThe Lord of the Rings' Bigatures Were Flawless

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy is rapidly approaching its 25th anniversary, and after all that time, its visuals have held up remarkably well. This is partially due to the sheer quality of the CGI, as Wētā Digital used cutting-edge technology to bring characters like Gollum to life. But more important than the quality of the CGI was Jackson's choice to use it sparingly and subtly. Whenever possible, he wanted to film using practical effects, which often meant employing miniatures. While a few of The Lord of the Rings' sets were built at full scale, such as the Shire and Edoras, this would have been impractical to do for each of the trilogy's many locations. Rather, most of the sets were constructed just large enough to accommodate the actors,...

The Wheel of Time Showrunner Explains Getting 'Very Frustrated' With Queer Representation in Other TV Series
Image
The world created in The Wheel of Timeis a fantasy world, not totally unlike that of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which The Wheel of Time creator and showrunner Rafe Judkins said he grew up with. However, he said something was missing from that fantasy world.

“I had nightmares about Gollum. I loved it…” Judkins said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, talking about the current third season of his Prime Video series. The showrunner said his father would read the Tolkien classics to him before bedtime.

How The Wheel of Time is Different

Judkins continued, “…But there was this gap in it for me in some ways until I read Wheel of Time, which is actually what I read with my mom. She gave it to me. I and she grew up in the Mormon church, and she was kind of a feminist figure within the church,...

George R.R. Martin is very much aware of his fans running short on patience waiting for his long-overdue novel The Winds of Winter. Yes, 14 years is more than enough to finish a book, but the author still hasn’t delivered his promise.

He’s not the only famous fantasy author who took a lot of time before publishing a highly anticipated installment. J.R.R. Tolkien notably spent almost two decades before he finished The Lord of the Rings, the sequel to The Hobbit.

‘Wheel of Time’ Showrunner on Expanding Show’s Queer Universe in Season 3 and the High Fantasy Genre: “It Was Worth Devoting My Life To”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from The Wheel of Time season three, episode five, “Tel’aran’rhiod.”]

There are many things showrunner Rafe Judkins wants you to know and love about his sprawling TV epic The Wheel of Time. That includes its LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Now three seasons in, the show has made a conscious choice to not only lean into that visibility, but also continue to centrally explore this aspect of the late author Robert Jordan’s high fantasy series. For Judkins, it’s not only an exciting privilege, but a driving force behind his approach to adapting the 14-plus book series.

The way Judkins has translated Jordan’s story into this onscreen universe for Prime Video has sometimes made that representation nearly imperceptible. Unlike much of mainstream TV’s treatment of LGBTQ+ characters and relationships, the existence of such in The Wheel of Time universe isn’t getting special episodes. There are no coming-out storylines,...
