‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Was Worth The Wait As No. 8 Most Valuable Blockbuster Of 2024
Image
Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

Cameron Diaz Proves She's Still a Major Star as Her Latest Movie Joins a Prestigious List
Image
Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.

One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.

Diaz's last film was 2014's Annie, and then she took a break to focus on her personal life. Her co-star, Foxx, persuaded her to come back to acting,...

John Lithgow Did Not Think 'Shrek' Was Going to Be a Big Thing
Image
John Lithgowhas made a name for himself by playing memorable characters like Winston Churchill in The Crown, Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock From the Sun, and Arthur Mitchell in Dexter. While his face is instantly recognizable, his voice is also a unique part of his identity, and the proof is in 2001's animated film Shrek. When viewers saw Shrek, many recognized Eddie Murphy as the voice of Donkey, and some were also quick to recognize Lithgow as the voice of the villainous tyrant Lord Farquaad. Although the character made quite an impression in the movie, the actor admits that he didn't think the movie was going to that big a deal. He thought he was giving voice to a "Saturday morning cartoon."

Lithgow is in the spotlight nowadays because of his confirmed participation in the Harry PotterTV reboot. He's set to play Hogwarts' headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the series. Overnight,...

Shrek's New Look in 'Shrek 5' Isn't Actually That Bad
Image
Quick LinksShrek's 2020s Makeover for 'Shrek 5'The Positive Side of Shrek's Redesign

Animation lovers, rejoice! Shrek is coming back to the big screens in late 2026. This DreamWorks franchise is easily one of the most popular animated properties of this century. So a new film should have united fans both young and old, right? Right? Not exactly, as all anyone can talk about online is the new design of the characters in Shrek 5. It's difficult to define just what exactly is upsetting fans, but it mostly boils down to Shrek looking "different."

This redesign isn't that unexpected, as it's been nearly 16 years since the last Shrek movie. CGI animation has improved in that time, with DreamWorks utilizing new technological methods. It's also been a full 25 years since the inaugural Shrek film, released when CGI was in its infancy. Each of the three subsequent films preserved most of the designs...

Oscars 2025: Dune: Part Two Won Two Awards, But The Audience Missed Zendaya, Here’s Why She Skipped The Event
Image
Why Didn’t Zendaya attend Oscars 2025? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Over the years, Zendaya has ruled the red carpet with her unique and fashionable looks at every award ceremony. This year, she was missing from the Oscars crowd, and her absence was felt terribly. The 97th Academy Awards, which was held at the Dolby Theatres in Los Angeles on March 2, was a star-studded affair. However, Zendaya skipping the event soon became the talk of the town. Although her movie, Challengers, was shut out from the competition, her other film, Dune: Part Two, received a few nominations.

Dune: Part Two, in which she co-starred with Timothee Chalamet, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and others, won two awards at the Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Even then, the Euphoria actress didn’t attend the event, and while we don’t know the reason, we can guess that because of her tight schedule,...

Sonic the Hedgehog Team Offers Advice After Shrek 5 Teaser Draws Backlash
Image
Sonic the Hedgehog's movie team has chimed in on Shrek 5's controversial character redesigns. A recently released teaser video showing Shrek's new look has drawn backlash from fans of the franchise.

The Sonic movies were infamously slammed by audiences, with the titular character's original design from the studio intended to be much more realistic and humanlike than his stylized cartoon counterpart. Eventually, the studio went back and completely redesigned the character after facing significant complaints from audiences ahead of the film's release. With Shrek 5's recent redesigns facing similar backlash, the Sonic movie team has given their own thoughts in a new TikTok video.

Here's What Fans are Saying About the Shrek 5 Teaser Trailer
Image
The Shrekfranchise has had a hold on pop culture for over two decades since the release of the first film in 2001. The unofficial mascot of DreamWorks, Shrek, has become a figure associated with humor and satire as the film critiques conventional notions of fairy tale stories, mainly poking fun at companies like Disney for its tired tropes. The franchise currently has four main films and two spinoff films centering around the secondary character, Puss in Boots.

With the release of Shrek Forever After in 2010, many thought that this would be the end of the main series. Once talks started to emerge that a fifth film was in development, fans wondered where the series could go next with the main cast of characters. On February 27, 2025, an official casting announcement was released on Universal Pictures's YouTube channel. The 27-second clip features five characters who appeared in the preceding films and a...

The #NotMyShrek Movement Wants to Pull A Sonic on An Uncanny ‘Shrek 5’
Image
This is not my beautiful swamp, this is not my beautiful ogre.

Fifteen years after Shrek superfans last saw their favorite belching, grumbling, green-skinned god on the big screen, we finally have a sneak peek at the next Shrek film following 2010’s underwhelming Shrek Forever After. Shrek 5, which DreamWorks and Universal plan to release in December of 2026, will take fans into the future of Far Far Away and show Shrek as an aged family man with superstar Zendaya playing one of his teenage daughters.

While it may seem a little premature for a distributor to start releasing teasers for a movie that’s ostensibly aimed at children nearly two full years before its release, Shrek 5’s distant release date is a blessing in disguise if you ask the #NotMyShrek movement that instantly assembled following the release of the clip below:

Notwithstanding the fact that the horny, depraved, disturbing...

After Watching Shrek 5 Teaser, We Are Begging DreamWorks to Do What Paramount Did With Sonic
Image
DreamWorks finally released the teaser for Shrek 5, and well, let’s just say that fans have some opinions, starting off with the new animation style. It has been fifteen years since the last Shrek film was released. It goes without saying that things have changed since then in terms of how the animation industry works. With new technology, movies don’t really have to look like what they used to decades ago.

Unfortunately, it looks like fans are not too happy with how the animation style has changed for Shrek 5 since Shrek Forever After (2010). Throwing it back to the time when people basically bullied Paramount into changing how Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) looked, fans are hoping DreamWorks will hear their pleas too.

Here’s Why Shrek 5's Animation Changed At DreamWorks
Image
A first look at Shrek 5 hit the internet, exciting fans for its eventual release, but also concerning many over some stark animation changes.

After originally planning a five-film Shrek arc, DreamWorks Animation decided to conclude the series with Shrek Forever After in 2010. However, discussions about a fifth film resurfaced in 2014, and after NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks in 2016, development slowly progressed.

In 2023, Illumination's Chris Meledandri confirmed Shrek 5 was officially in development, with the original cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz returning after stepping away from acting. A recent first look at the updated animation style debuted Zendaya's voice as Shrek and Fiona's daughter, marking a fresh direction with a new (divisive) look.

'Shrek 5' Animation Style Claim Has Fans Crying "Ugly Sonic"
Image
Shrek fans were celebrating when it was announced that a fifth installment was finally on the way, but having been given a quick glimpse at what they can expect from the new movie, they have already picked fault with one aspect of the new film. As Dreamworks shared the first look at Shrek 5 with an official casting video announcement, there is something slightly different about everyone’s favorite ogre that has riled a lot of people to the point that some have urged Dreamworks to just cancel the belated sequel now.

Though that may seem dramatic for such a small piece of footage to cause this level of backlash, it only takes a minor change to a tried-and-tested formula to send fans into meltdown mode. In this case, it is a slight change in the animation style that fans are not happy about. Some have even suggested that a...

Everyone Agrees - This First Look at Dwa's 'Shrek 5' Sequel is Terrible
Image
"Who's making this stuff?" Good question - because wow this looks awful. DreamWorks Animation debuted a tiny 20 second teaser announcing Shrek 5, a new sequel in the Shrek franchise. This will be released a full 16 years after Shrek Forever After, the fourth movie that opened back in 2010. There hasn't been any other continuation since, unless you count the recent Puss in Boots movies or Shrek on Ice (for real) or whatever random brand concepts they've cooked up. Shrek 5 is the fifth movie in this popular animation series, which began in 2001. The original voice cast returns - Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey. With the addition of Zendaya voicing Felicia, Shrek & Fiona's not-so-young-anymore daughter. It's set for release on Christmas Day in December 2026 more than a year from now, after being pushed back from its original July 2026 date. This teaser footage shows that they've...

“Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots”: After Shrek 5, It’s Time DreamWorks Meets Eddie Murphy’s Sole Condition For a Donkey Spinoff
Image
Shrek is arguably one of the greatest animated franchises ever made, with fans loving the adaptation of the classic children’s picture book by William Steig. In the franchise, actor Eddie Murphy voices the iconic sidekick Donkey. In an interview, Murphy admitted that Donkey is one of the most hilarious characters in the series.

As a result, the comedian-actor felt that Donkey was more deserving of a solo spin-off movie compared to the likes of Puss in Boots. Since the latter has already appeared in two solo movies, Murphy made a strong case for a Donkey spin-off. Here is what Murphy had to say about his only condition for a Donkey spin-off after Shrek 5.

Shrek 5 Teaser Trailer Brings In Zendaya, But Not As Meechee
Shrek 5 (2026)
This is not a drill! It's been a long, long time since audiences have taken a trip to Far, Far Away but "Shrek 5" is going to bring us back there next year. As evidence of that, DreamWorks has released the first, brief teaser for the long-awaited sequel -- one that introduces us to the cast. Most of them are familiar faces but there is one new, very important addition: Welcome to the family, Zendaya.

While the above teaser doesn't make it explicitly clear who the star of "Dune" and "Challengers" is playing in the film, the folks at The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that she is voicing the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Zendaya joins the cast of Shrek 5 as the daughter of Shrek and Fiona
Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and John Lithgow in Shrek (2001)
A fifth Shrek film has been officially in the works. It’s set for a December 2026 release date (around the 25th anniversary of the original film) , with original cast members Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy all confirmed. Murphy himself, in the press lead-up to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, revealed that some recording had already been done for the film and that his character, Donkey, is set for his own spinoff movie. Dreamworks made the official Shrek 5 announcement via social media, along with a tease for the film you can see embedded above! The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that Zendaya is now set to star in the film as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.

Zendaya’s resume is already filled to the brim with anticipated projects as she’s set to make a return to the sandy epic sci-fi franchise with Dune: Messiah, as well...

Shrek 5 Teaser Trailer Unveils Zendaya As Shrek And Fiona’s Daughter
Image
Once upon a time, Zendaya was Meechee. Then, Zendaya was Chani. Now, Zendaya is Felicia. The prophecy is complete. Yes, news has just come in for the actor’s latest major role – no, not the third chapter of Dune, nor another collaboration with Luca Guadagnino. Added to Zendaya’s upcoming slate is Shrek 5, in which she’s confirmed to voice Shrek and Fiona’s ogre daughter – as revealed by the film’s first teaser trailer. Give it a look:

It’s a short teaser, but there’s plenty to unpack there. Firstly, that Shrek memes – perhaps the ogre’s most enduring cultural presence in recent years – are now canon in the Shrek-verse. Secondly, that the designs of the characters are largely in line with how we left them in Shrek Forever After, but with a few subtle tweaks, rather than a total Puss In Boots: The Last Wish visual overhaul.

'Shrek 5' Casts Zendaya as Shrek's Daughter
Image
Zendaya is Meechee, Chani, and Tashi, but now she will be... Felicia, a.k.a. Shrek's daughter in Shrek 5. Shrek 5 is slated to hit theaters in December 2026, marking 16 years since everyone's favorite ogre graced the silver screen with his own feature film. Shrek 5 has easily become one of the most anticipated movies of 2026 and now has the added advantage of an entire generation who grew up with the original Shrek movies now being old enough to be some of Hollywood's newly established actors who would leap at the chance to join the franchise.

It appears one A-lister joining the Shrek franchise is Zendaya. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Zendaya has joined the cast of Shrek 5 as Shrek's daughter Felicia, first seen in Shrek the Third. The character will now be a full-grown teenager in the upcoming sequel. Universal Pictures released an official video revealing the cast,...

The in-demand actress plays the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz). As previously announced, Eddie Murphy will also reprise his role in the new film as Donkey. Watch a teaser offering a first look at Zendaya’s character below.

Slated for release on December 23, 2026, Shrek 5 will be the first installment to hit theaters since Shrek Forever After all the way back in 2010. No word yet on the storyline.

First ‘Shrek 5’ Trailer Introduces Shrek’s Daughter Zendaya
Image
The first teaser for “Shrek 5” has arrived and Shrek’s kids are all grown up — and apparently, Zendaya is indeed voicing one of them. Although, her character is horrified at the magic mirror’s latest reveal.

“Hey magic mirror! Who’s the fairest of them all?” Donkey eagerly asks, once again voiced by Eddie Murphy. The answer apparently is Shrek, as the mirror provides memed versions of the ogre in response.

You can watch the first footage in the video, below.

Among the results is a very buff Shrek, prompting his daughter Felicia (Zendaya) to pop in and gag at it, while Fiona — voiced by a returning Cameron Diaz, after making her acting comeback in Netflix’s “Back in Action” earlier this year — fawns over it.

Who’s responsible for such horrifying images, you ask?...

Zendaya Joins ‘Shrek 5’ Voice Cast as Shrek’s Daughter
Image
Zendaya is taking her talents to the swamp.

The mononymous, in-demand actor has joined “Shrek 5” as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

Universal and DreamWorks, the studios behind the animated adventure set in the land of Far, Far Away, released a teaser along with the updated casting news. In the clip, Shrek’s trustee sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) asks: “Hey Magic Mirror, who’s the fairest of them all?”

Magic Mirror, you know, the one from “Snow White,” responds: “Why Shrek! Of course.”

But this Magic Mirror appears to have a distinctly 21st century twist, allowing the green ogre to swap between various Gen Z-ified looks at Shrek. This prompts very different reactions from Felicia and Fiona as Shrek raises the question of the hour: “Who is making this stuff?” Just then, Pinocchio pops up to tell a nose-growing lie, declaring “Not me!”

The First Three 'Shrek' Films are Climbing the Netflix Chart as Fans Await 'Shrek 5'
Image
The first three Shrek movies have once again found themselves in the Netflix global Top 10. As of this writing, Shrek sits at number two, Shrek 2 is at number four, and Shrek the Third is at number eight. While none have yet to crack Netflix's United States top 10 chart, it proves that the animated classics are beloved by audiences worldwide.

When Shrek opened in 2001, it was one of DreamWorks Skg's earliest animated films. The studio was launched in 1994 by Hollywood and music legends Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. It was seismic, as it was the first major studio in decades and featured three of the most powerful people in entertainment. Spielberg was coming off the dual successes of Schindler's List and Jurassic Park, Katzenberg had turned around Disney's animated film division, and Geffen was one of the biggest music moguls on the planet.

Eddie Murphy to play retired superspy in action comedy Blue Falcon
Image
Deadline reports that Eddie Murphy is set to star in Blue Falcon, an action comedy scripted by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen). Murphy will be playing a “retired superspy who heads for the destination wedding of his estranged son, and finds himself in proximity with his archrival.” It makes me think of that Andy Warhol quote: “In the future, everyone will play a retired superspy.” I think that’s how it went.

Blue Falcon will be produced by Davis Films’ John Davis, Cliff Roberts through Syndicate Entertainment, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster through Eddie Murphy Productions.

Cameron Diaz's Netflix Comeback Movie Gets Audience Rotten Tomatoes Score More Than Double Negative Critics Score
Image
Cameron Diaz's long-awaited comeback to Hollywood with her new Netflix movie Back in Action has received a solid audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Helmed by Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon, Diaz stars in the action-comedy alongside Jamie Foxx as Emily and Matt, former undercover CIA agents who go on the run with their children after their identities are discovered by a mysterious enemy. Marking the first pairing between Diaz and Foxx since 2014's Annie, critics have not been kind to Back in Action, netting it a 24% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, with the movie in its debut weekend on Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes has calculated Back in Action's Audience score. With over 250 reviews calculated on the review aggregate, the action-comedy currently sits at a 64% approval rating from viewers. This is not only more than double that of its decidedly negative critics' score, but also gives it a Fresh score from audiences,...

Shrek 5: Release Date, Cast & Everything We Know
Image
After more than a decade since the last installment of the franchise, fans are still looking for Shrek 5 to take them back to Far, Far Away. In 2001, the landscape of animated films changed forever when Shrek premiered. A clever amalgamation of wry adult comedy and bucolic, kid-friendly whimsy, it puts a twist on the fairytale format with outrageous trope-smashing characters, a catchy soundtrack, and a wonderful message of self-discovery. It was swiftly followed by Shrek 2 in 2002, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010.

Though development has been slow, Shrek 5 is still happening — and despite alterations in direction and storylines, it seems to finally be coming out of the ever-dreaded development hell. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has reignited interest in the Shrek franchise with the acclaimed spinoff movie teasing more adventures in the land of Far, Far Away. After such a long wait,...

Image
Deadline (via Toonado.com) has learned that Shrek 5 is now set to open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. The long-awaited sequel had originally been scheduled for July 1, 2026, so while this delay isn't too big, those extra five months are going to sting for impatient Shrek fans.

It's also been revealed that an untitled Illumination event movie has moved from March 19, 2027 to Minions 3's vacant June date.

Shrek 5 is being released to coincide with DreamWorks' 25th anniversary, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will be at the movie's helm.

Universal Releasing 'Minions 3' a Year Early, 'Shrek 5' Delayed to December 2026
Image
Universal Pictures will release two of its biggest animated film franchises in 2026, as Minions 3 has been bumped up from 2027, which has delayed Shrek 5 back to a December release. When Shrek 5 was announced to arrive in theaters in the summer of 2026, fans were over the moon. Following the critical and box office success of Puss in Boots and the generational nostalgia for the Shrek franchise, timing Shrek 5 for the franchise's 25th anniversary seemed like a perfect play. Universal pushes back the release of Shrek 5 while moving Minions 3 forward by a full year

The grand return of Shrek will have to wait a little longer. Universal Pictures has pushed back the release of Shrek 5, which will now open on December 23, 2026, instead of July 1, 2025.

‘Shrek 5’ Pushed to Christmas 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moved Up to July 2026 in Universal Release Shake-Up
Image
You’ll have to wait a little longer to learn if all that glitters is gold.

Universal has announced that DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek 5” will be moving from July 1, 2026, to Dec. 23, 2026. In its place, Universal will open Illumination’s “Minions 3,” which was previously supposed to come out a year later. That’s the kind of chaotic scheduling a minion would really embrace.

Additionally, an untitled Illumination film has moved from March 19, 2027 to June 30, 2027 (the previous “Minions 3” date).

“Shrek 5” sees Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz returning to their iconic roles. The movie will release as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The new movie will be directed by the previously announced Walt Dohrn and the newly announced Conrad Vernon, both veterans of the franchise. Dohrn worked on the second and third “Shrek” films as a writer and on the fourth film as head of story.

‘Shrek 5’ Pushes Release to December 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up to Summer 2026
Image
Universal Pictures is adjusting its movie release calendar for upcoming titles from two venerable animation franchises.

The studio announced Friday that DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 is now set for release on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, after previously having been dated for July 1, 2026. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing Shrek 5 with Brad Ableson as co-director. In a twinned move, Minions 3 from Illumination is now set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, moving up from its previously planned release date of June 30, 2027. Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions spinoff movie, is helming Minions 3 from a script from Brian Lynch. Universal Delays ‘Shrek 5’, Moves Up ‘Minions 3’ & More
Image
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 will now open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, instead of July 1 next year.

At the same time, the studio said Friday it is moving up Illumination’s Minions 3 from June 30, 2027 to Shrek 5‘s previous July 2026 date. That’s because the Minions and Gru have ruled the Independence Day frame for quite some time, most recently with Despicable Me 4 minting a $230M global opening last summer.

Another shift going on at Universal: an untitled Illumination event movie will move from March 19, 2027 to Wednesday June 30, 2027.

Shrek 5 is timed to Dwa’s 25th anniversary. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as reported are reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, respectively.
