Tom Hardy's Netflix Movie Havoc Has Been Dethroned By This German Action Thriller
Image
Only three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and the most-watched movie on Netflix changing as quickly as it takes you to press play. At the end of April, the Tom Hardy-led actioner "Havoc" held strong in the top spot among the streamers' programming in the U.S., but according to viewership aggregate site FlixPatrol, it's since been unseated from number one by the new German thriller "Exterritorial."

Written and directed by Christian Zübert, "Exterritorial" stars "Barbarians" actress Jeanne Goursaud as a mother on the hunt for her missing kid. The twist? The child apparently disappeared inside a U.S. consulate building in Germany, and Goursaud's Sara has to bend and break more than a few rules to find him. Fortunately, Sara is an ex-Special Forces officer, so she's equipped to fight her way through the consulate building and get to the bottom of her son's disappearance – potentially...

Image
Veteran stunt coordinator and second unit director Scott Rogers (Tron: Ares) will make his directorial debut with an adaptation of One Second After, the first book in the New York Times bestselling John Matherson trilogy by William R. Forstchen.

Set in the hills of North Carolina, the story follows college professor and former military officer John Matherson as he fights to preserve the lives of his family and neighbors in the wake of an electromagnetic pulse attack. In just one second, the United States is completely incapacitated, thousands are killed, and millions are stranded. One Life To Live Alum Eddie Alderson Saves A Life While On The Job
Kristen Alderson, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Erika Slezak, Trevor St. John, and John-Paul Lavoisier in One Life to Live (1968)
Some feel-good news about One Life to Live (Oltl) alum, Eddie Alderson, who played Matthew Buchanan on the soap from 2001 to 2012. A news outlet is reporting a real-life heroic act of the former soap star, and we have all the details below.

Eddie Alderson’s Life, Post-oltl

Since leaving the world of soaps in 2012, Alderson dove into the public service sector, first working as an Emt and now employed as an Amtrak police officer in Philadelphia. Both roles had him prepared for one of those “at the right place at the right time” moments to save the life of Steve Smart, an Amtrak conductor.

As per a report from Philly’s Action News (ABC), Alderson recently had a reunion with Smart. The Amtrak conductor had an emergency at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station when he stopped breathing some weeks back, and the former soap actor jumped right in.

‘One Life to Live’ Alum Eddie Alderson Heralded For Saving Amtrak Rail Conductor’s Life
Image
Former soap star turned Amtrak police officer Eddie Alderson is being heralded for saving the life of an Amtrak rail conductor who had stopped breathing at a train station in Philadelphia, Pa.

In a report filed by the local ABC affiliate Wpvi (6abc), when Amtrak rail conductor Steven Smart had a medical emergency requiring CPR, it was Officer Alderson who was first at the scene before the arrival of Ems paramedics.

“Luckily, the train was already here. All the doors were open,” said Alderson in an interview with the news station as part of its “Heroes on the Frontlines” segment.

“All we see is an unconscious man laying on the floor,” continued Alderson, recalling his arrival at 30th Street Station. “It comes down to the second, every second – especially a heart attack,” he added, discussing how a prompt response plays a significant role when trying to save a life.

10 Best Clint Eastwood-Directed Movies (That Don't Star Clint Eastwood)
Image
One of the most important figures in the history of cinema, with both on and off-screen presence that has lasted more than half a century, Clint Eastwood spans generations of Hollywood. His on-camera work in the Western films of the 1960s helped to usher in the Spaghetti Western subgenre, and his pivot to movies like Dirty Harry represented a shift toward the grittier pessimism of New Hollywood.

However, much of Eastwood's most prolific work has been behind the camera, directing dozens of movies over the last several decades. Even when Eastwood is not on the screen in one of his own films, his minimalist style and quiet approach to telling small-scale human stories still peek through, and he continues to capture the depth of the human experience well into his 90s.

Quick Links What is Changeling About? What is the True Story Behind Changeling? Clint Eastwood Shows Empathy With Changeling Changeling Deserved Better

There are very few feelings as goosebump-inducing as when a movie fades to black and an afterword fades in. After 2 hours of living in this fictional world, a truth bomb is dropped on the viewer. Everything depicted in the film they just watched actually happened. The five simple words "based on a true story" carry so much weight that filmmakers have even begun lying about it. Films like The Strangers and Fargo claim to be based on true stories when, in fact, they are completely fabricated from beginning to end. Those two films are fantastic in their own right, but they can never quite match the exhilaration of seeing a genuinely true story flawlessly and faithfully translated to the silver screen. There are a lot of fantastic contenders...

Clint Eastwood's 'Juror #2' Lands Top Spot on Max Streaming Service
Image
With a directorial career spanning over 50 years, and an acting career that goes back another 20, Clint Eastwood is a certified Hollywood legend. From his appearances as the Man With No Name in the Dollars trilogy, to his later post-modernist Westerns like Unforgiven, and his directorial efforts, American Sniper, Invictus, and Million Dollar Baby to name a few, Eastwood's filmography is nothing short of legendary. Despite this, his final film as a director, Juror #2, was buried at theaters, being pulled early from its (very) limited theatrical release. Thankfully, the movie has a new home on streaming, and it's finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Juror #2 is reportedly Eastwood's final movie as a director. Based on an original script by Jonathan A. Abrams, the film features a star-studded cast, including Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Kiefer Sutherland, Cedric Yarbrough, Zoey Deutch, and many more. Hoult stars as Justin Kemp, who...

Angelina Jolie missed making movies and is ready for a comeback
Image
We are seeing quite a few female comebacks as of late, with the likes of Pamela Anderson and Cameron Diaz marking shifts in public perception and career moves. One that definitely deserves to be on this list is Angelina Jolie, who, despite popping into the MCU with Marvels a few years ago, has largely been absent from the screen. But with Maria – in which she plays singer Maria Callas – Angelina Jolie is poised for that comeback.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Anjelia Jolie credited Maria with reinvigorating her love for the screen, especially after years of tabloid attention over her personal business. “I went very dark for reasons I’d rather not explain, but I didn’t have a lot of light and life within me. Your light’s dim. I also just needed to be home more, so I couldn’t commit large periods of time to pieces. The choice...

Netflix's 'Maria' Starring Angelina Jolie Gets 73% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Angelina Jolie stars in Netflix's Maria, the latest film by acclaimed director Pablo Larraín that re-envisions the life of the iconic Greek soprano, Maria Callas. Jolie, who is already receiving major awards buzz for her role as the staggering figure, shines bright in a picture that received a positive response from critics and audiences alike. After arriving on Netflix earlier this month, Maria now has a Certified Fresh score and an equally positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Maria has a 73% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 73% Popcornmeter score from general audiences. While it seems not everyone is totally in love with the film, one aspect has been universally praised since the start – Jolie's performance as Maria Callas. Larraín's biopics are normally not touted for their adherence to the true story, and Maria reimagines much of what happens in the performer's life while filling in the blanks.

Angelina Jolie’s Golden Globe Nominated Biopic Becomes A Streaming Hit
Image
Angelina Jolie has been a celebrated actor for a number of years. She is famous for both her on and off-screen life, as she was in a high-profile relationship with actor and former Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Brad Pitt for over a decade. Prior to this, Jolie was also known for winning Best Supporting Actress for her acclaimed role in Girl, Interrupted. She was also later nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the stirring family drama Changeling.

While she had a peak period in the 2000s, Jolie's career has slowed down a bit in recent years. In 2021, she made her MCU movie playing Thena in Eternals, but then did not act in any projects in 2022 or 2023. Her career also saw other feature film gaps. For example, the actor had another three-year gap between her 2016 voice acting role in Kung Fu Panda 3 and her starring role in...

Maria 2024 Cast & Real-Life Character Comparison Guide
Image
Netflix's 2024 biopic Maria features a strong cast led by Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie. Jolie, best known for her roles in films such as Maleficent, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Girl, Interrupted, returns in her first feature film since Marvel's 2021 action blockbuster Eternals. Jolie has also directed several films, such as First They Killed My Fathers (2017) and Unbroken (2014). Jolie took a break from acting from 2021's Eternals until 2024's Maria to focus on spending more time with her six kids, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.

Maria depicts the final days in the life of Maria Callas, who was once considered the greatest opera singer in the world. The film takes place in 1970s Paris as Maria's health declines. Maria sees the world through a near-hallucinogenic and fading lens with her butler, Ferruccio, and her maid, Bruna, who care deeply for her. Maria is directed by...

‘Maria’ Star Angelina Jolie Says She Is Landing “Better Work” As She Gets Older
Image
Angelina Jolie isn’t worried about age impacting her acting career, as her turn as Maria Callas continues to garner rave reviews.

The Maria star told The Sunday Times newspaper, “I’ve got better work as I’ve got older,” in an interview published over the weekend.

“I don’t think about it in terms of roles offered, but in terms of life experience you contribute,” added the actress, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 1999’s Girl, Interrupted and was nominated for Best Actress for 2008’s Changeling.

Jolie, 49, said that ageing was “easier for actors than singers or dancers because your body doesn’t change,” and added she appreciates opera singer Callas’ “commitment” to performing despite a fear of getting older.

Netflix film Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín from a Steven Knight screenplay, sees Jolie playing the American-Greek soprano in her final days in Paris, as...

Angelina Jolie movies: 16 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”

She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Jolie received very positive reviews as his second wife, Cornelia. Later that same...

‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Tangos Past $317M Worldwide – International Box Office
Image
Updated: Offshore audiences continue to devour Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance with a sophomore weekend of $68.4M in 66 markets for an international box office cume of $227M so far. The running global total after two frames has clicked past the three-century mark, now at $317.1M, which is 4% ahead of Venom: Let There Be Carnage at the same point in release and at today’s exchange rates.

After last weekend’s powerful launch, which was fueled by overseas and a particularly strong debut in China, the international holdover markets were down just 44%; a better showing than the second frames of Let There Be Carnage (-55%) and the first Venom (-59%). While Venom 3 last session registered the lowest opening of the trilogy domestically, the $120M budgeted movie had a terrific second-weekend hold there, as Anthony has noted.

In new offshore markets, the symbiote thrashed into France with $6.5M, coming in 29% above Let There Be Carnage,...

‘Maria’ trailer: Angelina Jolie plays Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s Netflix awards contender
Image
“Maria” is ready to sing.

On Thursday, Netflix released the first trailer for Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. A regular on the film festival circuit since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, “Maria” will enjoy a limited theatrical release in late November before hitting Netflix on December 11.

The third film in Larrain’s unofficial trilogy on prominent women of the 20th century following “Jackie” (about Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (about Princess Diana), “Maria” follows “the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye.” The film, which unfolds over Callas’ final days, “reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.” Callas died in 1977 at the age of 53.

“This film is my most personal work yet. It is a...

Golden Globes are golden opportunity for Angelina Jolie (‘Maria’), according to Experts
Image
In our Oscar odds, Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Karla Sofia Gascon (“Emilia Perez”) have emerged as the front-runners for Best Actress. But the first of those films is a comedy and the latter is a musical. Since comedies and musicals are separated from dramas at the Golden Globes, that opens up a golden opportunity for a dramatic actress to assert herself this awards season. As of this writing, it looks like that actress will be Angelina Jolie (“Maria”).

Jolie is the front-runner for Best Film Drama Actress for her biographical performance as opera singer Maria Callas. The film is directed by Pablo Larrain, who guided Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart to Best Actress Oscar nominations for the respective biopics “Jackie” and “Spencer.” Currently, Jolie leads our Globe forecasts with 37/10 odds. Among those backing her are 13 out of 18 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets. Gold Derby Editors are also confident,...

Why Angelina Jolie Doesn’t Believe Her Maleficent Role Fulfilled Her True Hollywood Desire: ‘I also still want to play a villain’
Image
Angelina Jolie is criminally underrated in more ways than one. There is absolutely no denying that the actress is gorgeous and created a completely new category of femme fatale in the industry. However, in her beauty and vanity, many seem to forget her talents go far past her looks.

Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted | Credit: Columbia Pictures

The actress is one of the most skilled and magnificent actresses in the industry, perfectly capturing the true complexities of female emotion, unlike several two-dimensional characters across Hollywood. Films like Girl, Interrupted; Changeling; and Gia perfectly showcase her abilities to play complex characters. At the same time, there is one film where she gets to explore morals instead of layers.

Angelina Jolie’s Future Plans

Over the years, Angelina Jolie has played many different kinds of characters. She has been on both sides of the law, enforced it, and played a spy, a love interest,...

Making This Clint Eastwood Movie Was "Very, Very Painful" for Angelina Jolie
Image
Its safe to say that Changeling isnt an easy watch for anyone, but it was equally taxing for some of the cast Angelie Jolie in particular. Under Clint Eastwoods direction, the film delivers a haunting narrative that explores one of 1920s Los Angeles darkest chapters. Based on the tragic, true story of Christine Collins, Changeling is about a mother whos on a relentless quest to find her missing son. Rather than getting help and support from an institution that was created to do just that, she comes face-to-face with corruption and deception from the LAPD. Jolies portrayal of Christine is authentic and powerful, as she captured the essence of a woman fighting a system that was bent on suppressing her voice. A performance that emotionally charged no doubt takes a toll on the actors themselves, with Jolie even referring to it as one of the most painful roles of her career.

Telluride Wrap: Cannes Winners Are Festival Crowdpleasers as ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Anora,’ and More Launch Oscar Campaigns
Image
The 2024 Telluride Film Festival was a success on many fronts, delivering packed screenings (and commensurate turnaways) at the big titles booked in the popular venues, with smaller turnouts for docs and classic titles in the less-frequented theaters. Below, IndieWire lays out the festival hits, commercial breakouts, Oscar contenders, and distribution seekers.

Festival Holdovers

The Telluride movies that played best for audiences were already anointed with credibility from prior festival reviews and/or prizes. That includes Cannes prize-winners “Emilia Pérez”, “Anora”, “All We Imagine as Light”, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, the banned Iranian film submitted for Oscar consideration by Germany. All will be strong Oscar contenders, assuming that “All We Imagine as Light” is submitted by India or France for Best International Film, which is not a foregone conclusion. From Sundance was secret screening “A Real Pain” (Searchlight), starring Kieran Culkin and writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, which played...

Angelina Jolie Could Sing Her Way to Second Oscar Win Playing a Legendary Diva in Pablo Larrain’s ‘Maria’
Image
As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”

It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like “Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

Angelina Jolie (‘Maria’) to follow the same Oscars path as Renée Zellweger (‘Judy’)?
Image
According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) is in fourth place for Best Actress with 17/2 odds at this year’s Oscars. The movie itself just debuted at the Venice Film Festival, earning an eight-minute standing ovation. That could be a sign of how strong a force she’ll be in the upcoming awards season. If she goes all the way, it would be similar to the Oscars path of another recent Best Actress winner.

In 2019 Renée Zellweger starred as actress and singer Judy Garland in Rupert Goold‘s biographical film “Judy,” which took place during the final year of the showbiz legend’s life in London, shortly before her death in 1969. Zellweger had previously been very active in Hollywood in the 1990s and 2000s, during which she received three consecutive Oscar nominations: 2001’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” 2002’s “Chicago” and 2003’s “Cold Mountain.” The last...
