Who would pass up $30 billion? Hollywood’s top decision-makers and gatekeepers, apparently.
Beginning in 2021, the consulting firm McKinsey has published a series of reports exploring the entertainment industry’s representation and inclusion of historically excluded people. Along the way, the analysts totaled up the potential financial revenue that Hollywood could stand to gain if it adopted more culturally inclusive business solutions: $10 billion per year from closing the Black inequity gap, an eye-popping $12 billion to $18 billion from properly valuing Latino professionals and consumers, and — in the latest report released today, conducted in collaboration with Gold House — $2 billion to $4.4 billion from more effectively tapping the Asian and Pacific Islander market.
The latter figure is calculated based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data that Asian Americans earn on average 30 percent more than non-Asian Americans but spend 35 percent less on media. Meanwhile, McKinsey’s own survey of Api consumers found that nearly...

Get ready for a gritty noir mystery thriller series set in Los Angeles created by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) and directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God). Apple TV+’s latest series titled Sugar is an original story and it follows the titular character Private Detective John Sugar, who goes to LA to find a missing girl named Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As he digs deeper into the case he finds some secrets the Siegel family would have liked to keep buried.
While the critical reception of Sugar is not as good as I would have hoped, it is still an impressive series and worth your time. So, if you want to lose yourself in the dirty underbelly of LA with Pi John Sugar, here are the dates for the series’ upcoming episodes.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was the end of the Dceu or Snyderverse that had started with Man of Steel. A movie riddled with reshoots and other production issues, it was expected to be a failed entry as of the rest of DC movies released before it. But surprisingly the Amber Heard and Jason Momoa starrer movie has made just enough to set it apart from DC’s other failed ventures.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

While we may never know how the movie would have turned out had the original plan been followed, here is why DC was adamant about having the Dark Knight make an appearance despite him not really fitting into the ‘released’ storyline.

Hollywood actor Joe Alwyn, who has been a very closed book, recently re-joined social media and published his first post since his high-profile split with Taylor Swift. The Instagram post is full of captivating images, from serene landscapes to Saturday smiles, and has triggered a wave of theories from Swifties.
Although Alwyn has become famous in recent years, people wouldn’t describe him as a well-known actor. He’s the new kid in the acting business who’s been a part of a few major movies and shows but still hasn’t fully reached the point of being a well-recognized celebrity. But the time he spent with Taylor Swift has certainly created a lot of buzz.

The immigrant experience is very particular because what it means to go to a different country and start a life from scratch can mean different things to different people; some people adapt very well, while others never really manage to grow roots there. What is pretty much universal is that living in another culture is not an easy task, and that is the subject of Expats, a new series created by Lulu Wang and streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Scribbled on a chalkboard in director Lulu Wang’s kitchen is a list of films and TV shows she and her partner, Barry Jenkins, have yet to see. As is tradition, their friends, many of them fellow filmmakers, come through their Silver Lake home and jot down suggestions for the pair. On this morning, the list features projects new and old, from the Apple TV+ series Slow Horses to the 1941 comedy The Lady Eve.
Not that Wang has had much time to get lost in the works of others lately. On Jan. 26, she’ll release Expats, her first project since she won over Hollywood (and critics) with her 2019 film, The Farewell, a fictionalized account of her family’s efforts to shield her grandma from a bleak diagnosis. The new series, her foray into TV, is an adaptation of the 2016 novel from Janice Y. K. Lee, who also was in Wang’s all-female writers room.

Another edition of the Primetime Emmys is in the books, and Succession, The Bear and Beef cleaned up, earning almost every award they were nominated for in their respective categories. It’s crazy to think, but the nominees were announced way back in July, as the ceremony was postponed from September all the way until now due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Succession has taken home the Emmy for Best Drama Series every year it’s been nominated in, except the first season. To note, the (many) awards The Bear won tonight were for its first season rather than its even more acclaimed second season, which aired on Hulu after the cut-off for Emmy consideration. Two series will trounce the competition at the long-awaited 75th Emmy Awards, as “Succession” and “The Bear” will come out on top in their respective drama and comedy fields. For its acclaimed fourth and final season, “Succession” will nab six of the seven drama awards, including its 3rd for Drama Series, wins for writing and directing and for three of its actors. “The Bear” will also dominate, similarly winning in six comedy categories for its freshman season. Scroll down for our complete Emmy Awards predictions organized by show.
Our official odds predict a more balanced split in the in the Movie/Limited categories, where “Beef” will take four awards, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” will win two, and “Black Bird” will take one. Movie/Limited Actor looks to be one of the closest races of the night, where as of this writing Steven Yeun and Evan Peters are only 12 votes apart for the lead.

It's easy to forget that "M*A*S*H" was actually a period piece. The acclaimed sitcom was filmed in the '70s and borrowed liberally from compassionate discussions surrounding the Vietnam War, but it took place two decades earlier, in 1950s Korea. Despite anachronistic '70s mustaches, a timeline that reimagined the relatively short Korean War as near-endless, and the occasional not-retro-enough prop, the show still worked hard to bring a fairly accurate vision of the 1950s to life.
Sometimes, that meant referencing movies that were made in the 1930s and '40s, like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Good Earth." In other instances, though, the series got ahead of itself, name-dropping movies that hadn't been released yet. The show's masterpiece series finale, the feature-length concluding story "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," apparently almost included a reference that straddled the line between anachronism and timeliness. According to The Hollywood Reporter's 35th-anniversary spotlight on the finale,...

In addition to “Starsky & Hutch,” Soul starred in the Western series “Here Comes the Brides” and movies like “Magnum Force,” “Salem’s Lot” and more. He was also a singer and released several albums in the ’70s and ’80s, and the No. 1 single “Don’t Give Up on Us.”
Born in Chicago on August 28, 1943, Soul started acting on stage in the ’60s and began pursuing his passion for music.

Five years removed, "Star Wars Rebels" remains one of the most beloved creations to come about during the Disney era of Lucasfilm. Across four seasons of animated television, co-creator Dave Filoni and his team helped showcase the formation of the Rebellion with new characters, who would occasionally cross paths with familiar ones. A big reason that the show feels so satisfying is that they managed to really stick the landing, with one heck of a series finale. But making that finale was quite the undertaking, so much so that Filoni had to keep some big secrets along the way.
Speaking to IGN after the finale in 2018, Filoni explained that he had to be very deliberate in his approach to the two-part finale, "Family Reunion and Farewell." The finale takes viewers years after the main events of the series, showing what happened after the conclusion of the original "Star Wars" trilogy.

"Candyman" began its life in 1985 as a short story called "The Forbidden," originally published in Clive Barker's "Books of Blood, Vol. 5" (called "In the Flesh" in the United States). "The Forbidden" was set in Barker's hometown of Liverpool, specifically at a run-down building called the Spector Street estate, where a grad student named Helen went to photograph images of graffiti and poverty. While there, she encountered a mysterious monster the Candyman, a creature she assumed was merely an urban myth. The Candyman is covered in bees and sports a hook for a hand. Its origins are unknown.
In 1992, filmmaker Bernard Rose adapted "The Forbidden" into the feature film "Candyman," one of the more celebrated horror films of its decade. Helen was played by Virginia Madsen, and the mysterious Candyman was played by a menacing Tony Todd. Rose transposed the location from Liverpool to the Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago.

It may still be the holiday season for us mere mortals, but TV programmers have moved on to preview season, promoting their 2024 series that have wrapped filming and those that just keep adding to their ridiculously stacked casts.
We’ll have more on the most anticipated shows of 2024 soon, as well as the shows that are ending next year. For now, Netflix is debuting enough new shows at the start of the year to keep you busy and indoors (which you’ll be much more grateful for if you live in a cold climate like us). Along with all six seasons of NBC’s emeritus tearjerker This Is Us, the streamer’s lined up another action-packed series starring Michelle Yeoh, a British mystery that could be January’s Who Is Erin Carter?-like breakout, and a true-crime documentary on three men who Bitconned the public.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

Nothing But a Man.If one were to map the career of Michael Roemer, they would find it closely hews to the history of postwar American independent cinema: in the 1940s and ’50s he worked in newsreels, educational film, and, roused by cinéma vérité and the Italian neorealists, observational documentary. Yet the production methods and narrative strategies of his fictional films, which he made from the early ’60s to the ’80s, diverge remarkably from the work of his contemporaries. In October, I spoke to Roemer, who is 95, over the phone from his home in Vermont. Our conversation revealed the depths of his independence. It was not a style, not simply a contrarianism, but a sensibility, a fidelity to a certain worldview. This comes across in his thoughts on his most well-known film, Nothing But a Man (1964), which is seldom invoked without descriptors like “groundbreaking.” Indeed, it was a rarity for...

Doctor Who has been a cornerstone of British television since its inception in 1963. The series has not only captivated audiences with its adventures through time and space but also introduced us to a unique concept: regeneration. This narrative device allows the show to reinvent itself with each new actor taking on the titular role of the Doctor. But what prompts these talented individuals to step away from such an iconic character? Let’s journey through time to uncover the reasons behind each Doctor’s departure. William Hartnell’s Farewell William Hartnell was the first to bring the enigmatic Time Lord to life.

This year’s crop of films, either in post-production or completed, make scant reference to the region’s brutal historical past, perhaps with the exception of “Pepe” by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, which begins with the capture of drug lord Pablo Escobar who sowed terror and chaos for years in Colombia, or José María Cabral’s “Tiguere,” set in a ‘90s Dominican Republic.
In contrast, they focus more on human interest stories as in the territorial dispute in “El Casero”; family clashes in “November” and “Una casa con dos perros” – also a reference to Argentina’s economic crisis – as well as issues of identity and intergenerational relationships.

Salma Hayek penned a farewell message to her “Fools Rush In” costar, in which she detailed what she described as the special bond they’ve shared over the years.
“Two days ago, I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us,” Hayek began her post, which was published Monday on Instagram. “It’s taken me a couple of days to process this profound sadness. There is a special bond that happens when you share dreams with someone, and together you work towards them.”
The post was coupled with photos of the pair through the eyears. She also shared an image of a previous post Perry made about his “most treasured role,” which he’d said was his time starring alongside Hayek in their 1997 film.
“I did a movie that I love called Fools Rush In with @salmahayek — that was probably my best movie,” Perry had written.

The popularity of "M*A*S*H" is well-documented: Its record-setting finale telecast, which captivated 125 million people in total, is cited in media studies lessons, bar trivia games, and world record books alike. But when we talk about how "M*A*S*H" went out on a high note with the most-watched non-Super Bowl telecast of all time, we don't often talk about what those viewership numbers make clear: The show ended while plenty of fans were still clamoring for more.
"M*A*S*H" ran for 11 seasons before bowing out with the feature-length finale, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen." But unlike most shows that fizzle out after a long run or are canceled after a short one, "M*A*S*H" didn't have trouble getting audiences' attention. According to classic TV ratings databases, nine of the show's seasons were among the top 10 most-watched shows on TV, and millions of fans tuned in regularly even before its big finish. Exclusive: Executive Producer Dani Melia describes how “a scrappy team” that made filmmaker Lulu Wang’s acclaimed low-budget feature The Farewell joined forces with Blossom Films’ Nicole Kidman and Per Saari to make “this big international production” Expats for Prime Video.
Melia tells me how she and Wang had “long talked about wanting to continue working together” after making The Farewell.
Then, while they were promoting the movie in Australia, Kidman approached Wang about directing an adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee’s book The Expatriates.
Wang was excited, and Melia recalls the director telling her: ”I need to find a way to do this with you and the rest of the crew who did The Farewell. I want my creative team onboard, and I think this should be our next thing.”
Melia says that quite a few creatives from The Farewell ended up making the leap with them.

Elton John Has A Chance To Egot With Emmy Nomination For Live Concert ‘Farewell From Dodger Stadium’
Elton John might just secure his Egot status at the 75th annual Emmy Awards.
The 76-year-old music icon received a nod from the Television Academy on Wednesday morning in the Outstanding Variety Special category for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.
The nod is one of three for Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which showcases his final North American show as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. It is the first Disney+ live special to receive an Emmy nomination.
“It’s an honor for my Special to be recognized by the Academy. My final Dodger Stadium performance was bittersweet and an evening that I will never forget,” John said in a statement following his nomination. “My team at Rocket Entertainment, the talented Fulwell 73, and everyone at Disney+ went above and beyond to create a magical production, not only for me as I said goodbye to North America, but...

Going to an Elton John concert is an experience — fans eagerly play the air piano, parents film the show with their cellphones like feverish teenagers, and attendees wear sequined blazers, studded rhinestone glasses and fuzzy scarves to match the style of the Rocket Man.
All this was captured in Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which aired live on Disney+ on Nov. 20. The concert took place 47 years after John’s historic 1975 performance at the Los Angeles ballpark that cemented his superstar status.

This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Ted Lasso."
The first two seasons of "Ted Lasso" are about how emotional vulnerability is both the hardest trait a person can ever learn and the most deeply worthwhile. The third season of "Ted Lasso" is about ... being nice, I guess? The once-beloved Apple TV+ series just bowed out with an episode that seems intended both as a series finale and the beginning of a new chapter, and even after sitting through 12 extra-length episodes this season, it's still a little tough to figure out what the show's season 3 gameplan was.
The 70-plus minute season (or series) finale certainly tied up several of the season's myriad loose ends, but in keeping with the pacing problems the whole season has faced, it spent much of its runtime puttering around before getting down to business in -- excuse the football metaphor here -- the fourth quarter.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from James Corden’s primetime special and final installment of The Late Late Show on CBS.
