Prime Video is the place to be in August with an incredible month of new releases. The month kicks off with the premiere of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Aug. 1. The series was produced by J.J. Abrams and The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. We also return to Middle Earth this month with the premiere of The Rings of Power season 2 on Aug. 29.

As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.

The Hobbit trilogy also joins the Prime Video library this month, as do 21 and 22 Jump Street, Superman I-iv, Superman Returns, Night Swim, Drive Away Dolls, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Emma Roberts has been in some iconic movies like Valentine’s Day, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Scream 4, We’re the Millers, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. And ever since she first stepped into the world of American Horror Story in 2013, she has become one of the most recognizable faces in the horror genre, at least on the small screen. But it seems like she hasn’t had the same kind of luck when it comes to feature films since the 2015 film Nerve. And it’s not like she hasn’t tried. At the start of the year, it was announced that Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, is getting a series adaptation from Prime Video. Now Variety reports that Adria Arjona of Morbius and the upcoming Netflix release Hit Man and Richard Jenkins of The Shape of Water and The Visitor are set to star in the series.

Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” The official logline for the series says it will show viewers an interlocking universe of crime stories.

Brubaker has written the script for the pilot and will serve as showrunner of the series alongside Jordan Harper (Hightown). Brubaker and Harper are also executive producing with Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

Exclusive: Captain Marvel writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to direct the first four episodes of Prime Video’s Criminal, a drama based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Criminal was ordered to series in January and is currently in pre-production in Portland. Brubaker, who penned the pilot script, co-showruns with crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Hightown).

The TV show is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories. As Brubaker explained to Deadline in a 2019 interview, “Criminal tells the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.”

Brubaker and Harper executive produce alongside Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Philipp Barnett and Legendary Television. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.

Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

While Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pushed mountains to get the Marvel film made, he has shown equal commitment to his other roles that were not part of a billion-dollar franchise. The actor starred along with fellow MCU co-star Ben Mendelsohn in the comedy-drama Mississippi Grind, where the duo played the roles of gamblers.

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Laika, the Portland-based animation studio behind movies such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, has hired Jeremy Kipp Walker and Chaz Salembier as part of a push into live-action filmmaking.

Walker becomes executive vp, live-action production after serving as head of production for Netflix’s independent film division. His credits include The Big Sick, Half Nelson, Table 19, Mississippi Grind and It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

Salembier, a veteran of Walt Disney Studios, becomes creative vp, live-action film at Laika, charged with identifying and developing stories for the indie studio’s live-action film slate, starting at the Cannes Film Festival.

Exclusive: Emma Roberts (Madame Web) will exec produce and star in Space Cadet, a new rom-com from Stampede Ventures, which enters production this month. Also now aboard the film from writer-director Liz W. Garcia (The Lifeguard) is Prime Video, which will distribute it internationally.

Space Cadet follows the Florida party girl Rex (Roberts), who turns out to be the only hope for the NASA space program, after a fluke puts her in training with other candidates who may have better resumes, but don’t have her smarts, heart and moxie.

Greg Silverman and Jon Berg will produce on behalf of Stampede Ventures, with Stampede’s Gideon Yu and Chris Bosco exec producing alongside Roberts, Garcia and Michael Tadross. Written by Kelley and directed by Homeland‘s Lesli Linka Glatter, Love and Death is inspired by the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs and a collection of articles from Texas Monthly.

The series revolves around two churchgoing couples enjoying small-town family life in Wylie, until somebody picks up an ax. The couples are Candy (Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Fugit) and Betty (Rabe) and Allan Gore (Plemons).

Gilchrist will play Pastor Ron Adams, Marvel will portray Pastor Jackie Ponder, and Pelphrey is Don Crowder.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.

Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.

Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.

March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.

What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.

If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

Marvel Studios is currently developing the second Captain Marvel movie and we have a ton of questions about what the highly anticipated will hold. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige first announced that Brie Larson was taking on the role of Carol Danvers back in 2016. Feige teased us with some pretty epic concept art at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 and gave us a few tidbits of information to dissect and speculate about. The movie finally hit theaters in March and it was a massive success, going on to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. There has been a lot of talk about The Craft remake this week. Blumhouse and Columbia Pictures are resurrecting the high school witch thriller, which originally starred Neve Campbell. The project was initially set up as a true sequel to the 1996 classic. But those plans fell through. Don't worry, we'll still get our Neve Campbell fix, as she has just joined the crime drama Castle in the Ground. Eh, who needs The Craft 2?

Let's meet Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, the first female lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

From her origin story – first published in 1968 – to the superpowers Brie Larson will wield in the March 2019 movie, we trace the history of Marvel's eponymous hero in this video.

There have been several characters named Captain Marvel over the years but the upcoming movie will follow the Carol Danvers storyline.

ORIGINS: Danvers, an air force pilot and CIA agent, debuted in "Marvel Super-Heroes" #13 in March 1968. In it, Danvers is recruited by NASA to work with Doctor Philip Lawson, a man with whom she becomes romantically involved before learning is actually Mar-Vell, from the super-intelligent alien race of Kree.

Mar-Vell blocks an explosion, causing his genetic template to meld with Danvers’ DNA, turning her into Ms. Marvel. Eventually, she becomes Captain Marvel in July 2012, after Mar-Vell dies.

POWERS: Described as the most powerful super in the MCU, more than the Hulk, Thor, and maybe even Thanos, Captain Marvel is super-strong, has extensive military and CIA training, absorbs energy and returns the blasts from her fists, and she can fly six times faster than the speed of sound.

She also absorbed a seventh sense that allows her to subconsciously anticipate the moves of her opponents, and sometimes she can connect with the cosmos, all of which will come in handy in the Kree-Skrull war, which will be the center point of her upcoming MCU film.

MOVIE: Coming in March 2019, the 1990-set movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Jude Law as Dr. Lawson/Mar-Vell. Samuel L. Jackson will be back as Nick Fury, with two eyes as we’re going back to the 1990s and will mark his first encounter with superhumans.

Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou reprise their ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ roles as Ronan the Accuser and Korath, both Kree warriors.

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the husband-wife team behind ‘Half Nelson’ and ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ direct the movie based on the script they wrote with an all-star team of scribes, whose credits include ‘Inside Out,’ “GLOW,” ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Tomb Raider,’ “Weeds,” and “Nurse Jackie.”

The plot will be Danvers’ origin story, her battle to protect Earth when the ongoing Kree-Skrull war crashlands in her backyard, and it will explain where she’s been since the Ninties.

Without spoiling anything, we know that Captain Marvel will play into ‘Avengers 4’ as her movie premieres just two months beforehand, and because we saw a quick reference to her signature look at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’

Her cosmic powers fit perfectly in Marvel’s plan to expand their storyline out into the galaxy, with the success of the ‘Guardians’ movies.

And for those in the grip of mental health issues, seeing something you're up against in real life being reflected honestly on the big screen can be something of huge importance. That's why I want to talk about a low profile movie called It’s Kind Of A Funny Story.

Captain Marvel will be Marvel Studios' first big-screen, solo outing for a female superhero, seeing release between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, on March 8, 2019. The popular character will be played by Brie Larson, who this year appeared in both Kong: Skull Island and Free Fire. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously stated that Captain Marvel will be the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so her role in Avengers 4 and the overall McU going forward will be an incredibly important one.

While I remain skeptical about Marvel Studios commitment to their female heroes, they took a small step forward in making Captain Marvel a reality by signing directors to the project. That's right, directors, as in plural. The writer/director duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck won the gig. They're not doing the screenplay this time (which is new for them) but still co-directing. They debuted with the searing Half Nelson for which Ryan Gosling earned a well deserved Best Actor nomination. Their subsequent films (Sugar, It's Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind) weren't quite as acclaimed but were respectable outings. They've recently been directing performance-centric shows like Looking, Billions and The Affair.   

What does this mean for the film? Well it bodes well for the acting (not that Brie Larson needs a lot of help there) since they always do right by the talent but we hope...

After months of speculation, Marvel has finally chosen its directors for Captain Marvel, bringing in a pair of indie filmmakers who weren't mentioned as front runners in the past. Mississippi Grind sees him co-starring with Ben Mendelsohn, in the story of a struggling poker player who meets Reynolds' Curtis. He's thus convinced to hit the road, on the way to a high stakes poker game in New Orleans, and a bond of sorts no doubt forms between the pair.
