The new poster for Freaky Tales designed by Tom Ralston reminds you to always bet on the underdog.
A pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists, the genre-bending anthology hits theaters on April 4 from Lionsgate.
Executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort, the film is written and directed by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.
Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.
The ensemble cast includes Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of Sundance, “There’s a bombastic charm to Freaky Tales that captures the essence of ‘80s action and genre cinema in a way that few manage.

Lucy Hale's performance shines in the film. Keir Gilchrist and Hale have great chemistry. The cast struggles with a lack of direction and odd acting choices.
Running on Empty is a movie that clearly tries to deliver an impactful message about living life to the fullest, but it falters behind bizarre and lackluster comedy and writing. The movie stars Keir Gilchrist, and Lucy Hale, as young adults searching for meaning in their lives. This is made exponentially more important for Mort (Gilchrist), when he is told he has less than a year left to live.

Prime Video is the place to be in August with an incredible month of new releases. The month kicks off with the premiere of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Aug. 1. The series was produced by J.J. Abrams and The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. We also return to Middle Earth this month with the premiere of The Rings of Power season 2 on Aug. 29.
As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.
The Hobbit trilogy also joins the Prime Video library this month, as do 21 and 22 Jump Street, Superman I-iv, Superman Returns, Night Swim, Drive Away Dolls, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Emma Roberts has been in some iconic movies like Valentine’s Day, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Scream 4, We’re the Millers, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. And ever since she first stepped into the world of American Horror Story in 2013, she has become one of the most recognizable faces in the horror genre, at least on the small screen. But it seems like she hasn’t had the same kind of luck when it comes to feature films since the 2015 film Nerve. And it’s not like she hasn’t tried. Roberts has done rom-coms, science-fantasies, action-horrors, straight-up horrors, and whatever categories Madame Web and UglyDolls fall into. However, I think she has come up with the ultimate test for her fans in the form of Space Cadet.
Liz W. Garcia’s Space Cadet tells the story of Rex Simpson, a girl living in Florida who aspires to go to space.

Criminal: John Hawkes, Pat Healy, & more join Charlie Hunnam in Prime Video’s Ed Brubaker adaptation

John Hawkes has been one of my favorite character actors since he first came to my attention back in the ’90s with roles in films like Roadracers, Night of the Scarecrow, From Dusk Till Dawn, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, so it’s cool to hear (from Deadline) that he’s going directly from a multi-episode role in the latest season of True Detective to landing a recurring role in the Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. Hawkes, along with Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (Bmf), and Logan Browning (Dear White People), join previously announced cast members Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

At the start of the year, it was announced that Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, is getting a series adaptation from Prime Video. Now Variety reports that Adria Arjona of Morbius and the upcoming Netflix release Hit Man and Richard Jenkins of The Shape of Water and The Visitor are set to star in the series.
Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” The official logline for the series says it will show viewers an interlocking universe of crime stories.
Brubaker has written the script for the pilot and will serve as showrunner of the series alongside Jordan Harper (Hightown). Brubaker and Harper are also executive producing with Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

While Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pushed mountains to get the Marvel film made, he has shown equal commitment to his other roles that were not part of a billion-dollar franchise. The actor starred along with fellow MCU co-star Ben Mendelsohn in the comedy-drama Mississippi Grind, where the duo played the roles of gamblers.
Reynolds revealed that the two had gone on a road trip to find the shadiest gambling bars to research their characters. The Free Guy star said that they came across a wide range of characters when they visited these bars that were far from the luxurious casinos in Las Vegas. He also mentioned how people were addicted to gambling and how similar it was to drug addiction.

Cinephiles tend to be reluctant to call a new movie a favorite, instead favoring tried and true paradigms, but It Follows is a rare contemporary film that immediately struck a wide swath of viewers — myself included — as a modern classic upon its release in 2014. Comfortingly familiar yet invigoratingly fresh, I’ve only come to appreciate it more since, and Second Sight Films’ new 4K Ultra HD edition proves it hasn’t lost any staying power after nearly a decade.
The plot is deceptively simple: after a sexual encounter, 19-year-old Jay begins being followed by… something. The supernatural force takes a human form but never sticks to one for long; it could be a familiar face, an obscene stranger, or anyone in between. The only recourse seems to be passing it on to someone else via sexual intercourse. Otherwise, it will kill her, then the person who gave it to her,...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Production designer Beth Mickle cut her teeth in the independent movie scene. Indeed, in her 2012 interview with Pushing Pixels, Mickle credited Ryan Fleck's Half Nelson and Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive as two very important films in her oeuvre, the former being that which kick-started her career in the 2000s, and the latter raising it to new heights in the early-2010s (via Women and Hollywood). Even if you don't know her name, you'll likely have seen her work in movies like It's Kind of a Funny Story, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and, more recently, The Suicide Squad and Dear Evan Hansen.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

The CW has cast Tony-nominated The Prom star Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz as the two leads of its untitled drama pilot executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
Written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir and directed by Tessa Blake, the project centers on two millennial nuns – a devout true believer (Kinnunen), and a new arrival (Ortiz) who has yet to take her final vows – who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic church.
Kinnunen’s Sister Frances is the complacent angel on your shoulder, an impressionable, people-pleasing, young nun who believes in the power of thoughts and prayers and never breaks the rules — until she meets Sr. Maggie.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

Marvel Studios is currently developing the second Captain Marvel movie and we have a ton of questions about what the highly anticipated will hold. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige first announced that Brie Larson was taking on the role of Carol Danvers back in 2016. Feige teased us with some pretty epic concept art at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 and gave us a few tidbits of information to dissect and speculate about. The movie finally hit theaters in March and it was a massive success, going on to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. Feige went on to officially announce Captain Marvel 2 at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
The seeds for Captain Marvel go back even further than 2017. The studio actually officially announced development of the first movie way back in 2014, which had fans excited. However, many McU fans were under the assumption that we would see Scarlett Johansson in...

There has been a lot of talk about The Craft remake this week. Blumhouse and Columbia Pictures are resurrecting the high school witch thriller, which originally starred Neve Campbell. The project was initially set up as a true sequel to the 1996 classic. But those plans fell through. Don't worry, we'll still get our Neve Campbell fix, as she has just joined the crime drama Castle in the Ground. Eh, who needs The Craft 2?
Neve Campbell, Tom Cullen and Keir Gilchrist have joined the cast of writer/director Joey Klein's (The Other Half) Castle in the Ground.
The upcoming crime-drama will star Alex Wolff and Imogen Poots. William Woods under his Woods Entertainment banner and Michael Solomon under Band With Pictures will produce. Andra Gordon of American Entertainment Investors developed the project with Woods and Solomon and is executive producing alongside Tom Spriggs, Rob McGillivray, Ben Stranahan, George Stranahan, John Hansen,...

Let's meet Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, the first female lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
From her origin story – first published in 1968 – to the superpowers Brie Larson will wield in the March 2019 movie, we trace the history of Marvel's eponymous hero in this video.
There have been several characters named Captain Marvel over the years but the upcoming movie will follow the Carol Danvers storyline.
ORIGINS: Danvers, an air force pilot and CIA agent, debuted in "Marvel Super-Heroes" #13 in March 1968. In it, Danvers is recruited by NASA to work with Doctor Philip Lawson, a man with whom she becomes romantically involved before learning is actually Mar-Vell, from the super-intelligent alien race of Kree.
Mar-Vell blocks an explosion, causing his genetic template to meld with Danvers’ DNA, turning her into Ms. Marvel. Eventually, she becomes Captain Marvel in July 2012, after Mar-Vell dies.
POWERS: Described as the most powerful super in the MCU, more than the Hulk, Thor, and maybe even Thanos, Captain Marvel is super-strong, has extensive military and CIA training, absorbs energy and returns the blasts from her fists, and she can fly six times faster than the speed of sound.
She also absorbed a seventh sense that allows her to subconsciously anticipate the moves of her opponents, and sometimes she can connect with the cosmos, all of which will come in handy in the Kree-Skrull war, which will be the center point of her upcoming MCU film.
MOVIE: Coming in March 2019, the 1990-set movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Jude Law as Dr. Lawson/Mar-Vell. Samuel L. Jackson will be back as Nick Fury, with two eyes as we’re going back to the 1990s and will mark his first encounter with superhumans.
Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou reprise their ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ roles as Ronan the Accuser and Korath, both Kree warriors.
Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the husband-wife team behind ‘Half Nelson’ and ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ direct the movie based on the script they wrote with an all-star team of scribes, whose credits include ‘Inside Out,’ “GLOW,” ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Tomb Raider,’ “Weeds,” and “Nurse Jackie.”
The plot will be Danvers’ origin story, her battle to protect Earth when the ongoing Kree-Skrull war crashlands in her backyard, and it will explain where she’s been since the Ninties.
Without spoiling anything, we know that Captain Marvel will play into ‘Avengers 4’ as her movie premieres just two months beforehand, and because we saw a quick reference to her signature look at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’
Her cosmic powers fit perfectly in Marvel’s plan to expand their storyline out into the galaxy, with the success of the ‘Guardians’ movies.
Add ‘Captain Marvel’ to your IMDb Watchlist and roll on March 2019.

Captain Marvel will be Marvel Studios' first big-screen, solo outing for a female superhero, seeing release between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, on March 8, 2019. The popular character will be played by Brie Larson, who this year appeared in both Kong: Skull Island and Free Fire. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously stated that Captain Marvel will be the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so her role in Avengers 4 and the overall McU going forward will be an incredibly important one.
Marvel Studios recently hired Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to direct Captain Marvel. The pair have never directed a blockbuster, but are best known for their films Half Nelson and It's Kind of a Funny Story. They've also helmed TV episodes of Looking and The Affair. While I remain skeptical about Marvel Studios commitment to their female heroes, they took a small step forward in making Captain Marvel a reality by signing directors to the project. That's right, directors, as in plural. The writer/director duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck won the gig. They're not doing the screenplay this time (which is new for them) but still co-directing. They debuted with the searing Half Nelson for which Ryan Gosling earned a well deserved Best Actor nomination. Their subsequent films (Sugar, It's Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind) weren't quite as acclaimed but were respectable outings. They've recently been directing performance-centric shows like Looking, Billions and The Affair.
What does this mean for the film? Well it bodes well for the acting (not that Brie Larson needs a lot of help there) since they always do right by the talent but we hope...

After months of speculation, Marvel has finally chosen its directors for Captain Marvel, bringing in a pair of indie filmmakers who weren't mentioned as front runners in the past. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who most recently directed the A24 dramatic comedy Mississippi Grind starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn, have signed on to take the helm of this superhero adventure, which has Brie Larson set to star as the title character. While this news has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios itself, the studio reportedly took its time in finding the right director, while also making sure that the script was in great shape.
Variety reports that Marvel met with multiple contenders for the job before selecting Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The studio met with the directing pair multiple times and were thoroughly impressed with their approach to the title character, a.k.a. Carol Danvers. Nicole Perlman...

A weird 2010 interview featuring Zach Galifianakis is circling the web this morning, and it's something you need to see. Many people have speculated that this interview that took place during the press tour for It's Kind Of A Funny Story was the inspiration for Between Two Ferns, and that seems to be confirmed by an earlier interview with The Rock. The first episode of Btf aired in October, when Dallas reporter Gordon Keith had been doing his schtick as early as March of that year!
I don't understand how a journalist who works for a professional news station in Dallas gets away with doing this, but it's pretty damn hilarious! He needs attention for inspiring Galifianakis to do his series!

Before Ryan Reynolds returns as the Merc With the Mouth in next year's Deadpool, fans can check out the actor delving into the riverboat gambling underworld in the critically-acclaimed indie Mississippi Grind, which is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. If you haven't had a chance to pick up this drama quite yet, we have an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, where Ryan Reynolds discusses how he wanted to work with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, It's Kind of a Funny Story). We also hear from the filmmakers and co-star Ben Mendelsohn, who offer plenty of praise for Ryan Reynolds and how he works on the set.

Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn star in Mississippi Grind, the new film from the makers of Half Nelson. Here's the trailer...
Before he reprises the role of Deadpool on the big screen in next February's movie, Ryan Reynolds has another project arriving in cinemas.
Mississippi Grind sees him co-starring with Ben Mendelsohn, in the story of a struggling poker player who meets Reynolds' Curtis. He's thus convinced to hit the road, on the way to a high stakes poker game in New Orleans, and a bond of sorts no doubt forms between the pair.
What makes Mississippi Grind particularly of interest though is who's behind it. Writer-director team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck previously brought the world the excellent Half Nelson, and It's Kind Of A Funny Story. As such, what they get up to next instantly holds our interest.
Here, then, is the first trailer for Mississippi Grind, which...

"Want to know why? I don't care about winning." A24 has debuted the first official trailer for Mississippi Grind, an indie drama from Sundance this year. Directed by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, the filmmakers behind Sugar, It's Kind of a Funny Story and Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind stars Ben Mendelsohn as a down-on-his-luck poker player who teams up with a younger player, played by Ryan Reynolds, in hopes of changing his luck. The cast also includes Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton and Robin Weigert. As much as I admire these filmmakers, and love these two actors, this doesn't look like anything besides yet another gambling-is-bad, try-to-get-out-of-debt but it goes wrong movie. This may be all about the performances. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck's Mississippi Grind, direct from A24: Down on his luck and facing financial hardship, Gerry teams up with younger charismatic poker player,...

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (It's Kind Of A Funny Story), Mississippi Grind tells the story of Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn), who's down on his luck and facing financial hardship. Co-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden carved out a niche for themselves within the indie filmmaking community, releasing three features at regular two-year intervals from 2006 to 2010. Indeed, "Half Nelson," their debut after a clutch of short films, was the kind of first go-round that any aspirant director might dream of. It was critically lauded as a serious-minded, socially conscious character piece on the one hand, and a launchpad for Ryan Gosling into a new, high-profile, Oscar-nominated "oh he can actually act," phase on the other. Follow-ups "Sugar" and "It's Kind of a Funny Story" received mixed receptions, but there has always been a sense of the pair being most at home with character-led dramas in that groove of low-budget, independent films that give character actors a chance to flex their muscles. Their latest collaboration, "Mississippi Grind," which played at Sundance this year (our review) was different, as Fleck told...

"Mississippi Grind" marks Fleck and Boden's fourth feature together -- and it's not their first to premiere at Sundance (their previous collaborations, "Half Nelson," "Sugar," and "It's Kind of a Funny Story" all visited Sundance as well). The film stars Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelssohn as gamblers, and Alfre Woodard as an errant bookie. Now, really -- is that something you want to miss? What's your film about, in 140 characters or less? After a chance encounter in a Iowa casino, a down on his luck gambler (Ben Mendelsohn) teams up with a younger drifter (Ryan Reynolds) and they hit the road with dreams of winning big in a high stakes poker game in New Orleans. Now, what's it Really about?Friendship, Loyalty, Magic.Tell us briefly about yourself. We met 15 years ago in NYC and have been making films together for almost as long. What was the biggest challenge in completing this film?...
