John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been to the SXSW Film Festival twice before — for 2013’s “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” which they wrote, and 2019’s “Stuber,” which they produced. But when the pair debut the action-comedy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” as the opening film of the annual Austin event this Friday, it will be the first time they’ve done so as directors. They couldn’t be more excited.
“It’s the perfect setting for this movie,” Goldstein says, sitting in the Paramount lot office he shares with Daley, for an interview with Variety about the release of their latest movie.
“It feels like the quintessential South By film,” Daley adds. “It’s big and all-encompassing but there’s also something a little bit subversive about it.”
If it wasn’t for a Chicago Cubs game and a lightning-fast superhero, however, it may have never happened.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Jim Carrey was once the king of movie comedies, but he’s been something of a recluse on the big screen over the last several years. His last string of starring roles came in 2013 and 2014 with the releases of “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” “Kick-Ass 2,” and “Dumb and Dumber To,” all of which misfired with critics and struggled at the box office. Although he appeared in a supporting role in this year’s “The Bad Batch,” he was unrecognizable and rejected all press opportunities to support the film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Bland, tasteless entertainmentstuff intended to neither move nor offend, and succeeds as such. A sad pile of unfunny nothing that falls painfully flat. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I suddenly realized, while struggling to stay awake during the limp and unfunny Going in Style, that it seemed like forever ago that I first started seeing trailers for the film. Had its release been postponed after an initial marketing push, or was it just so uninspired and familiar that it merely felt as if I’d seen it all before?
Both, as it turns out: Style was original slated to open almost a year ago, in May 2016 (which means I probably saw trailers in late 2015), and it’s also such a stale wisp of a dustbunny that it barely stands out from its own background noise.

There’s a pretty dull formula for comedies developing around Hollywood that sees creatives cherry picking an innocuous event (“Office Christmas Party“), adding a thin plot and some raunch, and calling it a movie (see also: “Date Night“). And now another one is coming with “Game Night.” Sigh.
Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams will cash easy paychecks for this one, which is being dreamed up by writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Vacation,” “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”) with the story centering around, you guessed it, the wild shenanigans of one game night, and what happens when things go off course when a variety of couples are brought together for their regular hang.

"I haven't felt that magic has ever let me down." I've always been a fan of magic since I was a kid, and I love going to shows, even still as an adult. Magicians: Life in the Impossible is a documentary about the lives of professional magicians, and how hard it is and how dedicated they have to be. We've seen quite a few movies about magicians recently (between Now You See Me and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) but it's nice to actually see a story about the real people, the real men and women who make us all believe in magic. One could say this doc almost looks like Hoop Dreams for magicians, following four different performers as they try to establish themselves in the entertainment industry. Fellow magic lover Peter from SlashFilm says this doc is worth watching and it's already out on VOD, so give this a...

The first season of Love, the Netflix dramedy series created by Judd Apatow, Paul Rust, and Lesley Arfin and starring Rust and Gillian Jacobs, presents a bittersweet reversal of sitcom conventions while also offering a somewhat rare depiction of Los Angeles as a personality in and of itself. Helping both of those aesthetic aspects along is the score by songwriter Lyle Workman, best known for creating the music for Superbad, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and The 40-Year…...

To say that the world of magic or magicians is having a renaissance might be overselling things a bit, but it cannot be denied that films related to the world of magic have appeared with more frequency than one might expect, which is to say at all. The Prestige and The Illusionist kicked it all off and, ironically, served as the artistic peak of the trend. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone made a mockery of its own name and then pulled off its own disappearing act from the popular consciousness. That same year, however, another magician-focused escapade hit theaters, an impish caper film starring four photogenic performers using their skills to become modern day Robin Hoods.

Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos translates into English as A Rooster with Many Eggs. Which doesn’t make any sense: roosters don’t have eggs or lay eggs; hens do that. But of course in Spanish, huevos is slang for “balls”… that is, testicles. So a fair transliteration of the title of this flick is A Rooster with Lots of Balls, or maybe just A Rooster with Balls. Which means that this CGI cartoon — in which the word huevos gets uttered a lot, and which features anthropomorphized eggs with arms and legs and faces and names — was intended to be one long dick joke. "That Justin Theroux guy - where do I know him from?" Depending on whom you ask, you could get a great many answers. Of course, he's the husband of Jennifer Aniston, but he's had a string of notable acting roles too. He could be that guy from The Leftovers, the actor who played the hapless director character in Mulholland Drive, Leslie Knope's short-lived boyfriend on Parks and Recreation, or even the bad guy from Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. However, Theroux is also a screenwriter, and he's credited with a handful of major films that casual movie-goers might not associate with him.

I really don't want to waste anymore time on this than is necessary. Vacation, written and directed by Horrible Bosses and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, is a rebooted sequel to the original 1983 comedy National Lampoon's Vacation. It uses self-awareness as a defense mechanism and feces as its punchlines, which is to say it knows it's swimming in gutter humor and doing a poor job at it, but hopes you'll excuse it out of nostalgia for the original and compassion for what it feels it's up against. Hmmmm, best of luck to those that don't even know the original exists. How do you follow up a franchise of films that still stand tall more than 30 years after the original hit theatersc Well, having the family at the center of it all swim in sewage and attempt to clean out a bathtub that looks...

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (whose credits include The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Horrible Bosses) were among those considered to direct Marvel's Spider-Man reboot, but pretty much all of us forgot about the other candidates when it was announced that Jon Watts will direct Tom Holland in the movie. That made it all the more surprising when the duo were revealed to be the writers of the movie, and they expanded on that in a recent interview with Deadline. "Our agent helped get our foot in the door with Marvel, sending them a script we had written, and letting them know our track record and that we’d love to move from broad comedy to action and action comedy," Goldstein reveals. "Also, it helped that Kevin Feige wanted to draw on the spirit of John Hughes for this Spider-Man, and we had just written and directed a sequel to...

The new reboot/sequel “Vacation” is all too true to the experience of taking a long family trip: there are a few special moments you’ll remember and talk about later, but for the most part, it’s a featureless, repetitive voyage that can’t be over soon enough. Given its pedigree — writer-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein previously perpetrated the screenplays of “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” and both “Horrible Bosses” — “Vacation” does occasionally spring to life, delivering the kind of ouch-inducing humor of personal humiliation and bad luck that we’ve come to know from the ongoing adventures of the.

Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein gave us Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and this weekend's Vacation. I'll allow you to come to a conclusion on their body of work on your own as I'll have more to add with my review of Vacation later this week, but for now realize these two are signed on to write the screenplay for the upcoming Untitled Spider-Man Reboot, which is said to be approaching the webslinger with an eye for humor in the vein of John Hughes. It's definitely a new tact when it comes to tackling these comic book movies as the common theme for so long seemed to be a "dark and gritty" approach with celebs saying, "It's going to be a lot like The Dark Knight," in all of their pre-production interviews. Marvel, however, has taken the light and frothy,...

It’s amazing to see how far writing pair John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein have come. Daley familiarly started out in the Judd Apatow stable as one of the lead kids on “Freaks & Geeks.” While his career didn’t take off in front of the camera like Seth Rogen or Jason Segel, Daley did take Apatow’s write, write, write and write creed to heart. The pair haven't written any classic comedies (yet), and their movies "Horrible Bosses," its sequel, and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," aren't superb, but they’ve consistently been penning high profile work. Just how good is their “Vacation” reboot? (Which they wrote and also directed.) According to Warner Bros., it's terrific—they moved their directorial debut up from an October date to a much stronger summer bow. By all early accounts, it’s going to be a big hit. Thanks to their screenwriting prowess,...

With Sony and Marvel joining forces to bring another iteration – albeit not an origin story this time – of Spider-Man to our screens, the elements needed to make the movie have been slotting into place. Tom Holland is aboard to play Peter Parker, Jon Watts will direct the film and now it appears the scriptwriters have been found, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein in negotiations. The pair have had a meteoric rise in the last few years, graduating from writing and producing comedies such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the Horrible Bosses films to co-directing the new Vacation movie. And while not everything they’ve written has been a success, it’s worth noting that several of their drafts were changed before the films hit screens. There’s a chance that might happen with Spider-Man, as big tentpoles have a notorious habit of churning through script drafts...

Goldstein (Vacation, Horrible Bosses 2, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2) are in talks to pen the script for Sony and Marvel's solo Spider-Man movie which has both Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige on board as producers. Apparently Daley and Goldstein were actually on the director shortlist originally, but the gig went to Jon Watts (Cop Car) in the end. This reboot will take Peter Parker back to high-school, and though exact plot details are unknown, the tone has been likened to that of a John Hughes movie by Feige. Tom Holland will star as the Webhead after debuting in Captain America: Civil War, and the movie is set for release on July 28, 2017.

"Walley World... here we come!" Remaking a beloved comedy is a tricky thing because you’re going to ruin someone’s childhood, obviously. Most 1980s comedies are sacred and remakes were seemingly verboten for many years, but perhaps that’s about to change. The “Vacation” redo, from writers turned directors duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (“Horrible Bosses” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”), seemed like a pretty horrible idea when it was first announced, but don’t all of them? And the first red-band trailer was pretty damn funny too. But it’s actually not a reboot and is more of a belated sequel, which features the Griswolds' son Rusty all grown up (played by Ed Helms) and on a new mission to recreate the classic family holiday to Walley World. The movie also stars original “Vacation” couple Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo in their classic roles as the now graying Griswold grandparents and also co-stars Christina Applegate,...

As Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures narrow their list of potential actors to take over the role of Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, they're also trying to sign the new director to take over the multi-billion dollar franchise. While it seems Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland have the upper hand as far as playing the titular character, Deadline is reporting Sony is looking at Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) or Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) to sit in the director's chair. Both directors definitely wouldn't be the first choices for most studios to direct a high profile superhero epic, but Marvel Studios has a history of hiring directors that are new to the action adventure genre. Last year, Marvel released movies from Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are writing and directing the reboot of the classic 1983 comedy. Now the film is simply called Vacation, but there are still solid ties to the original franchise with Ed Helms leading the film as a grown up Rusty Griswald, getting ready to take his own family out on a vacation just like his father (Chevy Chase) and mother (Beverly D'Angelo) did when he was a kid.
