Split Fiction Unsurprisingly and Deservedly Smashes Through Early Milestone
Josef Fares
Split Fiction is the hot topic at the moment, with rave reviews from critics and players alike, huge player numbers on Steam, and an always outspoken Josef Fares not standing for any anti-dei nonsense. Now, we can add a huge sales record to that list, and we doubt it’ll be stopping any time soon either.

Split Fiction Passes One Million Units Sold Already

Many developers will tell you just how difficult it is to make a good game, and then on top of that, to make a good game that sells well. After three hits with Brothers, A Way Out and It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios have gotten the formula down for must-play two-player co-op games, and the faith in that is getting repaid multiple times over by overzealous fans buying the latest release.

Speaking on BlueSky, the studio announced the first sales milestone of the game, with it...

Major Questions A Gus Fring Breaking Bad Spinoff Could Answer
Image
Although Better Call Saul brought the story of the Breaking Bad universe to a close, there's still dramatic mileage in a spinoff focused on the early life of Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) that could answer some important questions. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has stated that he's moving on to other projects, but would "never say never" to a return to the rich fictional world he and Saul co-creator Peter Gould created (per Variety). Given that both shows are held up as masterpieces of the crime genre, a second Breaking Bad spinoff series would need careful handling.

The stories of Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), Walter White (Bryan Cranston), and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) may have ended, but there's still one enigma that neither Breaking Bad nor Better Call Saul ever resolved. The pre-Breaking Bad life of Gustavo Fring is an unsolved mystery that would provide enough fresh...

Better Call Saul: David The Sommelier, Explained
Image
The final episodes of Better Call Saul contained shocking conclusions for many of the show's longest-running characters while also introducing new faces, with David the sommelier (Reed Diamond) being one of the most compelling. While David only appears in one scene of the show, he adds a significant level of detail to one of the most mysterious characters from both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, aloof crime boss Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Through a short conversation between the two, viewers were given a rare glimpse inside Fring's mind.

Deception is one of the biggest themes in Better Call Saul, so while it was unsurprising to see Fring have yet another secret, the rapport that he shared with David demanded a deep level of analysis. David is one of many memorable side characters from Better Call Saul who exude the energy of a main character, but the fact that he...

There's Still 1 Huge Gus Fring Mystery Unsolved After Better Call Saul
Image
AMC’s Better Call Saul has concluded its sixth and final season, wrapping up the prequel series to Breaking Bad while failing to solve one huge Gus Fring mystery. The show explored the backstories of a number of Breaking Bad characters including Saul Goodman, Mike Ehrmantraut, Hector Salamanca, Tuco Salamanca, and many more key figures in the previous story of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. However, while Better Call Saul expanded on Breaking Bad's Albuquerque-centered mythology, there’s still a major mystery that the creators left unsolved: what happened to Gus Fring in Santiago?

Better Call Saul provides a much deeper look into Gus’ origins, including the story behind the construction of his underground meth lab. However, what happened in Santiago, an event referenced in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul ,has been left to the audience's imagination. We first hear about Santiago in Breaking Bad season 4, episode 8, “Hermanos,...

Portuguese Broadcaster Rtp Boards Cartoon Forum Player ‘My Brother Is a T-Rez’ (Exclusive)
Image
Portuguse public broadcaster Rtp has taken an undisclosed co-production stake in animated series “My Brother Is a T-Rez,” a Spanish-Portuguese project created and directed by Spaniard Javi Peces (“Bento”).

Executive produced by Celine Fernandes at Portuguese animation house Lusco Fusco Animation in co-production with Madrid-based Mr. Klaus Studio, “My Brother” is an upper pre-school series project aimed to promote adventure, educational and sustainability values.

The project was previously pre-bought by Spain’s public broadcaster Rtve for its children-oriented channel Clan TV.

“The Rtp deal completes a seal of recognition and support from both TV channels in our respective countries, so the circle is closed in the Iberian peninsula,” Fernandes told Variety.

“Our goal is to produce an animation series that is successful on the TV screen with a strong marketing reach,” Peces added.

One of the eight animated TV series projects produced or co-produced from Spain presented at 2022 Cartoon Forum’s pitching sessions,...

Giancarlo Esposito Has A Great Idea For A Gus Fring Prequel Series
Image
If you need a menacing and malevolent villain for further seasons of your acclaimed TV show, then look no further than Giancarlo Esposito, who appears to be the name at the top of everyone’s list. The 62 year-old took a much bigger role in the second run of The Mandalorian as the nefarious Moff Gideon, just weeks after shady businessman Stan Edgar played a more substantial part in the sophomore outing of Amazon’s subversive superhero hit The Boys.

The third season of Better Call Saul, meanwhile, also saw him make a welcome return as Gus Fring, the iconic small screen bad guy he first tackled in season 2 of Breaking Bad almost a decade previously. Esposito clearly has no issues running the risk of being typecast, then, and the head honcho of Los Pollos Hermanos remains the defining role of a lengthy career that began over 40 years ago. In fact,...

Hulu Drops Trailer to War Epic ‘No Man’s Land,’ from ‘Fauda,’ ‘False Flag’ Producer Maria Feldman
Image
Hulu has dropped an action-packed trailer to “No Man’s Land,” an epic war series, love story and, above all, tale of personal odyssey.

Setting it apart, the eight-part series takes place against the background of the Syrian Kurd Ypj women’s militia push back against Isis, a struggle featuring formidable female fighters.

A Hulu Original, set to bow in the U.S. on Nov. 18, “No Man’s Land” is created by “Fauda” and “First Flag” producer Maria Feldman as well as Eitan Mansuri, behind Omri Givon’s 2018 Canneseries best series winner “When Eagles Fly.”

In a pedigree creative package, the series is written by “False Flag’s” Amit Cohen and “Euphoria’s” Ron Leshem.

That is reflected in a multi-level series which is at once intimate drama and geo-political eye-opener, and spangled by set piece action scenes between the Ypj and Isis, which make up much of the trailer.

In a first,...

Mexico’s Laura Plancarte on Making Montana-set Doc ‘Non Western’
Laura Plancarte
One of the buzz films at Visions Du Reel, Mexican filmmaker Laura Plancarte’s Montana-set “Non Western” explores the romantic journey of Thaddeus, a Cheyenne native, and Nanci, a Caucasian, and the challenges their interracial union faces. Through them, Plancarte explores the chains of oppression that persist from one generation to another.

Thaddeus and Nanci were all set to travel to Visions du Reel in Switzerland when the coronavirus pandemic scuttled those plans, said Plancarte, who has lived in London for the past 11 years since winning a grant from BNP Paribas in recognition of her career as an artist.

She met the couple while making her previous film, the acclaimed “Hermanos,” when filming a main character’s return to Montana. “I fell in love not only with the landscapes, but with the people,” she said, noting the similarities in her Mexican culture and that of Native Americans. “Ours are both colonized cultures,...

As such, everyone collectively freaked out when they learned that Dave Filoni would be back with his hit show to conclude the story, this time in a satisfying way.

In fact, this final run promises to explore the events that lead to Revenge of the Sith and fill in the gaps.

Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section (2020)
Paramount’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section,” starring Blake Lively, opened quietly with $235,000 at 2,256 North American locations on Thursday night.

Horror fantasy “Gretel & Hansel” also launched on Thursday, but Orion Pictures did not report preview numbers.

The new entries are expected to generate only modest returns of less than $10 million during the typically quiet Super Bowl weekend while Sony’s action comedy “Bad Boys for Life” tops box office charts for the third weekend in a row. The third iteration of the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence franchise should take in between $15 million and $20 million, followed by Universal’s sixth frame of World War I drama “1917” in the $10 million to $12 million range.

Lively teams with Jude Law in “Rhythm Section,” an R-rated action drama about a woman investigating a plane crash that killed her family. It’s been forecast to open in the $4 million to $8 million range at 3,049 theaters. Critics...

Gretel & Hansel: 5 Fairy Tale Horror Films Fans Love (& 5 They Don't)
While most horror films these days pile on the jump-scares or attempt to provide more cerebral terrors, few borrow elements from fairytales, where much horror has been found for hundreds of years. As cautionary fables, fairytales from all over the world, particularly in Europe, have been dark stories designed to instruct children not to stray from paths, not to venture out alone at night, and not to talk to strangers.

Horror films that draw on fairy tale themes can effectively use imaginative methods to terrify audiences, especially in the area of creature designs and strong environmental visuals. With the release of Gretel and Hansel, a retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, lets look at 5 fairy tale horror films fans love & 5 they don't.

Will Blake Lively’s ‘Rhythm Section’ Fumble at the Box Office on Super Bowl Weekend?
Ticket sales could grind to a halt over Super Bowl weekend, a notoriously quiet time of year at the box office.

Two new movies are opening — Paramount’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” and Orion Pictures’ fantasy adventure “Gretel & Hansel” — though each is expected to make less than $10 million. Since the Super Bowl is the most-watched TV event of the year, studios shied away from releasing any blockbuster-hopefuls, assuming America’s attention will shift to the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

“The overwhelming attention paid to the Super Bowl over the entire weekend has traditionally made this a weekend that belongs more to football and less to the movies,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore.

Instead, Sony’s action comedy “Bad Boys for Life” should rule box office charts for the third weekend in a row. The latest entry in the Will Smith and...

The new governor of Canton, General Wei tricks Wong into helping him take control of the opium control from the Ma gang, who are the chief distributors, and subsequently, tasks him (supposedly) to find a cure for the addiction. Tchéky Karyo in Baptiste (2019)
Exclusive: BBC One’s gripping missing persons drama Baptiste is to return for a second, and potentially final season, with Killing Eve star Fiona Shaw joining the cast.

Madrid — Spanish film-tv director Salvador Calvo, who made his mark with his debut feature, 2016’s “1898, Our Last Men in the Philippines,” plus a string of admired TV series, is joining Madrid-based Boomerang TV, a bastion of Spanish scripted fiction over the last two decades.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas & Richard Madden To Headline New Russo Brothers Series ‘Citadel’ At Amazon
We have to admit, the post-Marvel Studios career for the Russo Brothers, and their production company, Agbo, hasn’t been the most electric, thus far. Their first Agbo-produced series, “Deadly Class,” was unceremoniously canceled by Syfy after only one season. And the first feature film to be produced by the brothers, coming off their record-breaking “Avengers: Endgame,” was the mediocre “21 Bridges,” which quickly disappeared after an uneventful box office showing.

Does Aew Have a (New World) Dark Order?
Mike McMahon Jan 2, 2020

Aew's much-maligned group has taken on some serious Nwo undertones the last two weeks ...

The Dark Order has been a maligned group in Aew. From their debut over the summer to the ill-timed push the group has been receiving since Aew Dynamite debuted on TNT this past fall, every step for the Dark Order has been met with heavy criticism.

Not enough was done to build the characters. Formerly the Super Smash Brothers, no explanation was given to longtime wrestling fans on why the team had new personas. At the same time, to new Aew fans who maybe didn't see the Super Smash Brothers in Roh or the indie scene, little was done to introduce them or tell the audience their backstory.

They were this group of evil, who had followers in masks, and they existed merely to exist. One of Aew's biggest missteps since the launch...

‘Gretel & Hansel’ Trailer: The Fairy Tale Gets A “Grim” Retelling In Upcoming Horror Film
The tale of “Hansel and Gretel” is one that isn’t exactly new to Hollywood. From its more classical and traditional adaptations of the original Brothers Grimm story like the 2002 film of the same name to the more unique retellings like 2013’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, their story has seen many shapes and forms.

The Safdie Brothers Explain Why They’re No Longer Attached To ’48 Hrs’ Remake
With all the talk about “Uncut Gems” and possible Oscars recognition, many film fans might have forgotten that the Safdie Brothers were actually attached to another film before that. In fact, the film that the Safdies were signed on to develop is none other than a remake of the popular ‘80s buddy cop comedy, “48 Hrs.”

But according to a new interview with MovieWeb, the Safdies explained why they’re not working on that film anymore and how that experience taught them to stick with originals…for now.

Padma Lakshmi Puts The New Yorker on Blast for Confusing Her With Priyanka Chopra
Padma Lakshmi
Padma Lakshmi had the cleverest response after The New Yorker’s Instagram account confused the Indian author and “Top Chef” host with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra by accidentally tagging Chopra in a photo of Lakshmi.

“Thank you to the illustrious ‘@nydailynews’ for the shoutout,” Lakshmi wrote in a caption to go with a screen shot of the mistake, deliberately tagging the wrong publication. “I know to some we all look alike, but… #desilife #justindianthings.”

The New Yorker has since deleted the Instagram post. Reps for Chopra and the magazine did not respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The 20 Best Action / Crime Movies of 2019
Despite their popularity, particularly among the mainstream audience, action movies are probably most difficult in terms of production, particularly regarding the budget demanded for such efforts. Stuntmen, SFX, action coordinators and a big budget for editing are some of the few standards a good action movie should include, and evidently, these cost money. However, since, most of the time these movies manage to get their money back and even have a profit, we still saw a plethora of them, and Asian cinema could not remains “outside the dance”, with a number of entries of the genre coming out every year, particularly from China and Hong Kong. Of course, the golden era of Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest is long since gone, but this does not mean that one cannot find quality movies in the category.

This year, in our continuous effort to present lists that focus on both prowess and diversity,...

Can The Rise of Skywalker Hold Strong at the Christmas Box Office?
Disney continued its truly mind-melting, record-breaking year at the box office last weekend with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which earned $177.3 million. While that was lower than both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, it's still easily one of the biggest December openings ever. As such, as we head into the Christmas holiday, the competition will be vying for, at best, the number two spot. Fox's Spies In Disguise, Sony's Little Women and A24's Uncut Gems all arrive in theaters ahead of the weekend.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is poised to easily win its second weekend at the box office. With the family crowd heading to theaters for the holidays, and considering that the movie has fared better with audiences than critics up to this point, expect to see a drop of around 50 percent from weekend-to-weekend, somewhere in the $85 to $90 million range.

Dobre Brothers Launch ‘Dobre Dunk’ Mobile Game With BroadbandTV
YouTube’s Dobre Brothers -- a fraternal faction of four vlogging megastars named Cyrus, Darius, Lucas, and Marcus, who count a combined 30 million subscribers and 10 million Instagram followers -- are delving into the mobile gaming business.

They’re partnering on the venture, dubbed Dobre Dunk, with Bbtv Interactive -- the division of BroadbandTV that creates mobile games in coordination with top YouTube stars. Available on both iOS and Android, the game will enable players to dunk their favorite brother into a basketball hoop -- by flipping and flopping their characters en route -- as many times as possible. The game, which is free to play but features in-app purchases, was inspired by the guys’ content, which most frequently comprises stunts, sibling-fueled pranks, and original music.

Bbtv Interactive, launched in Jan. 2018, has worked with other top creators to build original games and mobile apps across multiple platforms, including Bhad Bhabie's Ride Or Die!

Stranger Things Wouldn't Have Been a Hit If They Stuck with This Decision
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Stranger Things would not have been the hit it is today had the Duffer Brothers listened to outside pressure. The series is arguably Netflix's crown jewel and it has been since the start. The show premiered in 2016 and quickly became one of the streaming platform's most viewed pieces of original content. Season 3 has been its biggest to date and a fourth season was just officially announced. However, the Duffer Brothers originally struggled to find a home for the nostalgic series since they didn't really have a big resum&#233 in the entertainment industry.

The Duffer Brothers were having trouble pitching Stranger Things and ended up pitching it to networks, which would have more than likely doomed the show for that reason alone. However, since the directing/writing duo were relatively unknown, they were given advice about how the show should "really go." According to a 2016 interview with the Duffers, the...

Sibling Love! Nick Jonas Gets the Support of His Brothers at the Jumanji Premiere
The Jonas Brothers were in full force as they attended the premiere of Nick's upcoming movie, Jumanji: The Next Level, in La on Monday. Looking incredibly dapper in similar suits, the brothers were all smiles as they walked the blue carpet together. At one point, Joe teased his little brother by playfully smushing his face for the cameras.

Turns out, Kevin and Joe were stepping in for Nick's wife, Priyanka Chopra, who unfortunately couldn't attend due to filming. "She's in India right now, shooting a movie there," Nick told Entertainment Tonight during the premiere. "Although she's jealous because she loves Jumanji. She loved the last one. And she really wanted to be here, but she's got work." Even though we didn't get any cute moments between Nick and Priyanka during the premiere, the rare Jonas Brothers appearance totally makes up for it. See more pictures from the premiere ahead.

Karen Gillan Reveals A Key Avengers: Endgame Scene Was Improvised
Given how hungry fans were for any and all info on the movie, security on Avengers: Endgame was so tight that the cast was apparently only allowed to read the parts of the script that involved their characters and weren’t allowed to know the full storyline. At least, that goes for most of them.

Furthermore, we also know that in order to keep spoilers at bay, fake scripts were given to most of the actors which hid the real plot developments behind fictitious ones that were never going to be filmed. But of course, a lot of moments in the movie saw the actors go off script and improvise a bit, and Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, has now revealed one such scene.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress touched on the part at the beginning of the film, where her character is traveling through space with Iron Man.

‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ Paints a Rosy Debut at Indie Box Office
On a slow bridge weekend between Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, the indie box office was highlighted by the two-screen debut of Neon’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” the period Lgbt drama from director Celine Sciamma that won Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Opening at the Arclight Hollywood and New York’s Angelika Theater, the film grossed $67,105 for a per screen average of $33,552. The film, which follows the secret relationship between a young painter and her subject at the end of the 18th century, stands along fellow Neon release “Parasite” as the two 2019 films with the highest Metacritic scores. “Lady on Fire” has a 95 on the review website, while “Parasite” holds a 96. The film has been selected to join the Criterion Collection next year and will expand to more cities next weekend.

Distribution sources always say that people don’t begin to go to the movies until after Christmas, however, Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the exception to that rule. Netflix maintains early awards season pace with 'The Irishman' New York Film Critics Circle win
Uncut (2003)
Safdie brothers named best directors for Uncut Gems.

The Irishman and actors Antonio Banderas and Lupita Nyong’o won top honours from New York Film Critics Circle (Nyfcc) on Wednesday morning (4) as the group illustrated its penchant for blending conservatism and eccentricity, while Netflix continued to stamp its mark on early awards season.

For best film winner The Irishman, a second affirmation in two days after Tuesday’s National Board of Review vote brings more good news for Netflix in its breathless, no-expense-spared quest for a first best picture Oscar victory.

Give Adam Sandler an Oscar Nomination or He'll Make a Really Bad Movie on Purpose
Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler is going to make a bad movie on purpose if he doesn't get an Academy Award nomination for Uncut Gems. The actor/comedian jokingly made the threat in a new interview promoting his latest drama. Sandler plays Howard Ratner, who is a gambling addict trying to dig himself out of a massive hole. The performance has been receiving rave reviews from critics and those who have been lucky enough to see the movie early. Sandler also seems to be pretty happy with the job he turned in this time around.

Adam Sandler appeared on the Howard Stern Show to promote Uncut Gems. When Stern started talking about the positive reviews, Sandler joked, "That's shocking, right?" Stern went on to say that many people on his staff really enjoyed the movie and Sandler's performance in particular, which led to Academy Awards talk. Sandler says it would be a "funny...
